Cooper's blast as top clubs seek out stars

Apr 3 2004 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

Emley Under 14s are on course for a League and Cup double.

Their comprehensive 8-0 win over Wyke Wanderers last weekend secured them a six-point cushion at the  top with just four games left. But closest challengers Dalton Dynamoes do have a game in hand and also stand in Emley's way in next month's Cup final.

But Emley coach Steve Cooper is more concerned about keeping his team together.

He has some very fierce criticism of Premiership and Football League clubs, who have sent scouts to many of the club's games this season. Cooper fears that his team will be broken up as some of the players are lured away for trials at professional clubs, only to be dumped weeks or months later.

"No-one more than me wants to see boys get on in football if they have the ability.

"But the professional clubs just seem to think the amateur clubs who have put time and effort into
the young players do not deserve even common courtesy.

"I have seen scouts at our games and then heard of offers made to the players themselves and their families. Naturally the boys are interested but they then find they can no longer play with their friends and end up out of the game.

"It is only the lucky few that make it but it would be better if we as local clubs could nurture them along in  conjunction with the professional and semi-professional clubs.

"The clandestine meetings and the secret talks are a scandal. They are looking for the one gem and cause a lot of hurt and upset along the way."

Emley's players have put together a cracking run of form, which has seen them win 19 out of 20
league games and score 109 goals.

It is a success that has delighted Cooper, for the squad has been in rebuild phase over the past two years. He joined Emley from Kirkheaton and took some of the Kirkheaton players with him.

Now they have a squad of 16 and have attracted the professional attention.

Sunday's opponents, Wyke, held Emley to a 2-2 draw earlier this season. But this week they had no answer to the home club's firepower and went down to a four-goal blast from striker Ashley Duncan, plus other goals from Adam Powell (2), James White and Jake Cooper.

Dalton, the club still in with a chance of halting Emley's title challenge, had a narrow victory.

They entertained Netherton and won 4-3, with goals from Thompson (3) and Garside.

Emley also had an Under 16 side in action and they defeated Drighlington 2-1 thanks to goals from Megson and Barrett.

The club as a whole is working well and the aim of many of the junior players is to move through into   the highly-successful Under 19 Academy, which is watched by Emley first team manager Paul David.

Cooper said: "It would be highly satisfying for me as a coach to see some of these players stay with the club over the next year or two and then move on into the Academy.

"I know Paul David has had teenagers on the bench for first team games and I am sure these lads have the  talent."

Emley 8 Wyke 0

Another superb display saw our talented u/14 team crush a spirited, rugged Wyke outfit with an early three goal burst. The football at times was tremendous, led by Anthony Graham at the back and bossed in midfield  by Slack and Ellis. .Wingers Haygarth and Whyte worked hard as did solid full backs Pollard and Webster.  Nathan Inman battled tirelessly as always to win all the `bits`, and special mention to the front pairing of  Duncan and Powell who worked well to bag six  goals between them. The other two goals came from Whyte, a nice side foot volley, and Cooper, a rare front post header.

Report: 21/03/2004:

Dodworth 0 Emley 3 (cup semi-final)

The lads were superb today, none more so than Alex Slack and John Haygarth at the back and Adam Powell in midfield. The game sprung to life midway through  the first half with a top-drawer save by Dale  Harris to keep the score at 0-0, this seemed to spur the lads on and it wasn't long before Big Dunc broke through the Dodworth back four and slot the ball home. A second soon followed after good work by Ash Brothers, coming in off the wing to whip the ball into the danger zone where Whyte slotted home. The two strikers combined for the third when Cooper intelligently flicked-on for his partner,  Duncan to slot home his second.

Battyeford 1 Emley 6

Emley coasted through their 18th win of the season without breaking sweat. A poor game of missed   chances, wayward passing and scrappy play on a tight pitch, with goals from Powell 2,Whyte 2,Brothers and Haygarth doing the job.

The lads must step it up a gear in next weeks semi-final v. Dodworth. Leeds Road Playing Fields 11am ko.

Emley 7 Hartshead 0  (cup q.f)

The second division high-fliers came to Skelmanthorpe to play the first division leaders in this clash of the round. The result was never in doubt as Emley taught their opponents a football lesson. Goals from  Duncan 2,Brothers,Slack,Ellis,Cooper and Powell, and a fine defensive display from Graham, Pollard and Haygarth sealed an easy win and a well deserved semi-final game against Dodworth on March 21st at Leeds Road Playing

Emley 3 Hepworth Utd 1

Team; Harris, Butterfield, Webster, Graham, Slack, Ellis, Brothers, Powell, Whyte, Cooper, Duncan.   Subs. Pollard, Haygarth.

Scorers; Brothers, Powell, Haygarth. Man of the match, Dale Harris, with nothing to do in the first half he made good saves in the second to keep Emley in the game, showing great concentration and sound handling  under pressure.

Honley 2 Emley 8.

It took Emley 20 minutes to settle on a sloping, bumpy pitch but eventually came good with five quick goals before half time. Magical attacking play from Cooper, Duncan, Slack and Whyte did  the job. A  slight concentration lapse early in the second period saw the home side nick two goals, but Emley soon regained command and play some fine flowing football. Welcome back from injury John Haygarth and James Whyte. who had a terrific game today.

Report: 08/02/2004

Emley 8 Clifton Rangers 0

With key players missing Emley fought hard in windy conditions to break down a dogged Clifton outfit. Well done Big Dunc, coming back from a mini goal drought  to bag five superb goals and a solid all round display. Two goals from Powell and one from Ellis completed the rout. Special praise too for lads playing out of   position due to injuries and debutant Liam Smith who was a rock at the back alongside Anthony Graham.
Here is a young side growing in stature with every game, an absolute credit to the club and their management team. I took this job last season, armed with a four year plan to build a quality squad to play academy football and ultimately push for first team places. YOUTH is the future, but, the lads need to be looked after. They need DEVELOPING, it would be a shame to lose them.

Report: 25/01/2004

Emley 5 Battyeford 1

The scoreline doesn't reflect Emley's dominance in this game of many missed chances. Though the forwards, Powell and Duncan worked hard it was the mercurial Ash Brothers who stole the show with four great goals.  Well played too Nathan Inman in the midfield holding role, showing the bigger lads how to tackle. Also, Callum Ellis doing a disciplined job alongside rock-steady Anthony Graham.

Report: 11/01/2004

Emley 5 Elland 2.

An adequate display saw Emley progress to the last eight of the cup competition. Goals from Ellis, Whyte, Duncan 2 and Brothers were enough to sink a spirited Elland outfit on a sticky pitch at Skelmanthorpe. Man of the match; Richard Pollard, growing in confidence with every match.

Report: Dodworth 0 Emley 2.

Team; Imeson, Pollard, Haygarth, Graham, Ellis, Slack, Powell, Brothers, Inman, Duncan, Cooper

Subs; Whyte, Harris.

First half goals from Duncan and Brothers saw Emley take three well earned points from an impressive      Barnsley outfit. Special mention to under rated left full back Richard Pollard, solid defender Anthony Graham, intelligent play from Callum Ellis and simple but effective football from Jake Cooper, back after a long lay-off through injury.

Report: 21/12/2003

Emley 6 Netherton 3.

The first half saw the home side play some great football, good passing and movement, but poor finishing ruined the performance coupled with some feeble defending which saw Netherton come in 3-2 up at half time. The away side came with a game plan and defended magnificently keeping the rampant Emley side at bay, they tackled and fought hard for their lead. Inman and Brothers notched for Emley, though in all honesty we should of had six before the interval. The second period saw Emley come out storming and  quickly equalise through Duncan and soon take the lead with a stunning strike from Alex Slack after also beating three men to create the chance. Slacky was massive today, all over the park, lunging into  tackles, great passing, well done son! Whyte bagged number five to kill off Netherton and Powell got   the sixth, again from a midfield position as so many of his goals are. Once again, Cally was superb and Anthony Graham did a sound job for his team at the back.

Emley 14 Clifton Rangers 0.(CUP)
A game Emley were always going to win against an uncommited third division side. The less said the better!
Team; Harris, Pollard, Webster, Graham, Ellis, Butterworth, Haygarth, Slack, Whyte, Duncan, Powell, Butterfield.

Report: 07/12/2003

Wyke 2 Emley 2.

With fifteen minutes to go Emley were coasting to their eleventh straight win, great battling, movement, passing etc against a dogged Wyke outfit, the only negative was the amount of missed chances. Both  goals came from Powell, playing up front today along side Ash Duncan, the first of which followed good  work by debutant Nathan Inman and tricky winger James Whyte. Three quick substitutions by the Emley manager changed the game completely, the shape and balance of the side vanished and Wyke clawed their way back into a match that should of been dead and buried! To be fair to the lads, they did    their jobs well....the manager did not!!

Report: 24/11/2003

I've just been browsing on the Emley web-site and looking at the junior results it seems we have a star bunch of players in our midst. It appears the u/14s have  won 10 games straight and by any standards that's very impressive. I have spoken to Manager Steve Cooper and read all his match reports. It seems that in all your wins you've worked VERY HARD, done the right things at the right times and been very professional.

Just keep up the hard work and commitment. Well done lads.  PD

Report: 23/11/2003

Clifton Rangers 0 Emley 1.

A scrappy game with no flowing football saw the away side battle hard for three well earned points. With keeper Harris unavailable Alex Slack manfully took the gloves and did a great job behind a solid back three of Pollard, Butterfield and Webster. Clifton came with a stiffling game plan and played it very well and only a piece of genius by Ash Duncan separated the teams. Man of the match, Anthony Graham was again outstanding ably assisted by Callum Ellis. Well done lads! Three ugly points!!

Report: 16/11/2003

Emley 6 Brighouse 1

Referee Mark Berry did well to keep the lid on this highly competitive, physical encounter between two big no-nonsense sides. Emley won the early battles, Adam Powell excellent in midfield ably assisted by Anthony Graham and eventual Man of the Match John Haygarth. Goal-machine Ash Duncan pounced on a Powell thru ball to make it 1-0 at half time. Brighouse came out fired up but there was no stopping the home side, Duncan quickly scoring his fifth hat trick of the season, followed by a goal from skipper, Ash Brothers. Duncan netted his fourth and Haygarth scored his debut goal, Emleys sixth.

Team; Harris, Webster, Haygarth, Butterfield, Ellis, Graham, Brothers, Powell, Whyte, Cooper, Duncan, Slack, Butterworth.

Report: 02/11/2003

Howden Clough 2 Emley 9.

A brilliant first half that saw the visitors romp to a 6-0 lead and an Ashley Brothers hat-trick, plus a superb goal from James Whyte that destroyed the home team. The other two goals came from Ash Duncan and  Anthony Graham. The second period saw Emley step off the gas and concede two scrappy goals, but on a positive note Jack Butterworth scored his debut goal and Ash Duncan complete his fourth hat-trick of the season

Report: 26/10/2003

Hepworth Utd 2 Emley 6.

A scrappy first half saw Emley play up hill on a tight pitch, even going a goal down early on to the Holme alley outfit. Hard working Ash Duncan brought the visitors level and only some great goalkeeping from the home side keeper kept the scores level at the interval. The back three of Luke Webster,  Jon Butterfield and Richard Pollard were solid as was Callum Ellis and eventual man of the match, Anthony Graham. Emley took over down the hill, two more goals from Duncan made it 1-3, one each from busy wingers Brothers and Whyte and a header by Ellis completed the job. Midfield General   Alex Slack played some great through balls for the target men as did tough tackler Callum Ellis  who was involved in the best goal of the match, great interplay between him and Brothers, releasing Cooper who delivered a sweet ball into the danger zone for goal hungry Duncan to finish clinically.

Report: 19/10/2003

Emley 9 Honley 0

Just another day at the office for our talented U/14 squad. First half goals from Powell and Brothers broke Honley's spirit and the home side ran riot in the second period. Duncan 3,Whyte 2 and two more by man of the match Powell completed the rout.

Report: 12/10/2003

Westend 1 Emley 8

Its 5 wins out of 5 for the U/14s as they soundly beat Westend 8-1 away from home. Goals from Brothers 3, Duncan 2, Ellis 2 and Slack did the job, the pick being  a thunderbolt drive from man of the match, Ellis.
TEAM; Harris, Haygarth, Webster, Butterfield, Ellis, Butterworth, Brothers, Slack, Powell, Duncan, Whyte, Pollard, Ainsworth, Cooper.

Report: 05/10/2003

Emley 6 Howden Clough 0.

A dull first half saw the home side struggle to a 2 goal lead, the boredom being broken by a poachers goal by Cooper and a stunning strike by midfield Webster and 2 quality goals. The performance improved with the introduction  of Adam Powell shortly after the interval, Not to be outdone Duncan  also bagged 2 to take his seasons tally to 7.Great performances again from Ellis and Haygarth.

Report: 28/09/2003

Dalton 2 Emley 3.

Last seasons cup-winners were beaten by the runners-up today in an equally tough encounter. The visitors opened the scoring ,a great header by Slack from an in-swinging corner by Brothers. Dalton replied soon after but from the resulting kick off Emley went ahead from a well worked goal, smart interplay by Cooper and Duncan to release Brothers who finished clinically.1-2 at half time and Duncan made it 3 after good wing play from Ainsworth and Brothers. The home side scored a late consolation but Emley took the points. Callum Ellis and Jack Butterworth played well as did John Haygarth in defence.

Report: 21/09/2003

Emley 4  Dodworth 1

An entertaining battle at Skelmanthorpe saw Emley beat visitors Dodworth 4-1 in an epic encounter. Goals from Duncan 3 and Brothers sealed the match, ably assisted by Cooper up front and Powell in midfield.  As always, Ellis,Graham and Pollard were rock solid in defence in front of keeper Dale Harris.

Report: 14/09/2003

Gomersal 0 Emley 3

A highly competitive, physical encounter between two committed sides saw Emley run out 3-0 winners at Gomersal. As half time loomed at 0-0,a whipped-in corner by Brothers found Powell in front of his defender to head home. A bruising encounter in midfield forced three changes at the interval.  Man of the match Whyte always looked dangerous down the left, but it was the ever industrious Ashley Brothers who netted next with a typical poachers goal. Ben Imeson in goal was solid and pulled off a fine save at 0-2 when Gomersal looked threatening. The game was wrapped up with a magic strike by Ash Duncan towards the end. Callum Ellis and Anthony Graham were as solid as ever as were full backs Webster and Pollard.
