Report

Mar 14th Wakefield Res v Hyde United Res

Wakefield's reserve side put in a superb display to hold Conference North side Hyde United to a draw at College Grove. Hyde fielded nine first team players as their Conference North fixture does not take place until Sunday, making Wakefield's performance even more impressive.

Wakefield scored early in the game when Paddy Mumbly's long range shot was spilled by the goalkeeper and centre back Richard Lavery was the first to react to slot the ball home from close range.

Wakefield held out well and managed to restrict Hyde to only a few attempts on goal. As the game ticked into injury time at the end of the second half, Wakefield looked to have secured the points when Lee Cockerham pulled off a superb double save from a penalty. The spot kick had been awarded after Wayne Shooter had fouled inside the area, but Cockerham did well to push the initial shot away and also got down to block the follow up effort from point blank range.

However, Hyde snatched an equaliser in the third minute of added time after a player broke away from the defence and smashed the ball into the net.

It was a great display by Wakefield though against a very strong opposition.

Result: Wakefield Res 1 - 1 Hyde Res

League Cup

Wakefield lost their only home game in the League Cup Group Stage after conceding a late goal against local rivals Ossett Albion.

Wakefield were given a tremendous chance to take a win from a very even game in the last five minutes after Calum Stapleton was fouled in the penalty area. Substitute Barry Rothera, returning after a long period out injured, stepped up but saw his shot pushed onto a post by the Ossett goalkeeper.

Ossett snatched the game in the closing moments with a tremendous strike from 20 yards that flew over Lee Cockerham and into the net off the inside of the stanchion.

Nov 6th Farsley Celtic Res v Wakefield Res

Wakefield pulled off a tremendous performance once again to maintain their unbeaten record and stay level with Farsley at the top of the league with two games in hand.

The result was all the more impressive since Wakefield could only send a 12 man squad due to injuries and work commitments, five of whom were under 19, along with the fact that they were taking on a Blue Square Premier side.

Wakefield worked hard to come away with a point. The Wakefield goalscorer on the night was
Ash Duncan.

Oct 12th Wakefield Res v Woodley Sports Res

Another display of doggedness, fortitude and resilience led to a single goal win, which continued the fine run of results put together by the reserve team.

In the early stages both sides impressed with good tidy passing and movement, albeit cautiously. Neither side created clear openings in the first twenty minutes although Woodley had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down in the 21st minute. In the 23rd minute a good move by Wakefield led to Duncan skimming the bar with a lob and it wasn’t until the 44th minute that the next chance was created. McGahan was dispossessed and neat passing by Woodley led to the final shot going just wide of the post.

The second half started brightly and early pressure from Wakefield forced a corner in the 50th minute. The kick was taken by Collinson, who received the ball from the clearance. Controlling the ball quickly, he deftly cut into the box to fire an absolute screamer of a shot into the top corner to open the scoring. Wakefield continued going forward with purpose and were now creating chances. A good move on the left led to a cross being driven low and hard into the penalty area but desperate attempts to meet the ball fell short. Ten minutes later a snap shot by Dos Santos was spilled by the goal keeper but unfortunately for the oncoming attackers, the ball went up and not outwards. Woodley then took the initiative and for the remaining 15 minutes of the game put Wakefield under a lot of pressure. Collinson was sent off for Wakefield in the 80th minute for a second bookable offence, but try as they might, Woodley were unable to break the stronghold imposed by Batty and Brock at the heart of the Wakefield defence.

Oct 1st Wakefield Res v Bradford PA Res

Wakefield were held to a 1-1 draw against neighbours Bradford at College Grove. Centre back Craig Laight headed Wakefield in front just after half time. Ash Duncan then had a goal disallowed for offside and substitute Wayne Anderson hit the post.

Wakefield were effectively reduced to ten men with 15 minutes left when Antonio Dos Santos was forced off with a hamstring injury and Wakefield had already used their substitutes. Bradford responded and scrambled a late equaliser past Lee Wilson to take a share of the points.

Sep 21st Wakefield Res v Farsley Celtic Res

Wakefield continued their fine form with a home victory against Blue Square Premier club, Farsley Celtic.

This was an extraordinarily disciplined performance by the reserve team, who not only kept a clean sheet for the third time in five outings this season, but demonstrated a resolve and determination that is becoming characteristic of this side. The game started as expected, with Farsley playing their usual pass and move game at a high tempo and very tidily. It was wonderful to watch, but equally, good defending is also something to admire. The Wakefield side was well organized and when the shape was lost, the ever present Stevenson was on hand to fill the gaps. The defensive four of Brock, Normaschild, Laight and Collinson, were tight and mean while up front Amos and Townsend worked hard to close down any attacks launched from their defence. The first clear chance of the night fell to Townsend, whose beautifully struck shot was disallowed for hand ball by the referee. Quite what he was meant to do when the ball was drilled at him was a question that went unanswered! Farsley too created good opportunities, but a lack of quality or decision making with the final pass often let them down. When Wakefield opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, it followed a ten minute period of constant pressure from Farsley. A long throw into the box by Rothera was completely mis-judged by the keeper. The ball was pulled back to Townsend who coolly lobbed the ball into the goal.

The second half opened with a blitz from Farsley for approximately 15 minutes. They created good openings and chances which were duly missed. During this spell Wakefield rode their luck, but they stuck to the tasks of keeping a good defensive shape and winning the challenges that mattered. Eventually, the lack of reward for their efforts frustrated Farsley and their plays became predictable. Wakefield broke up any attacks and managed to set up a few of their own, the pick of which led to Stevenson striking the ball just over the bar from 30 yards. In the 75th minute Wakefield had a second goal disallowed for an apparent offside. From a free kick, Amos timed his run into the box perfectly and volleyed home from six yards. The assistant referee disallowed the goal for offside, which it was, if we were still playing to the rules that changed two years ago! This was maddening, but it did not affect the concentration of the players. In the 85th minute, goalkeeper Burton pulled off a tremendous save to keep all three points for Wakefield. A through ball into the box found a Farsley striker unmarked, ten yards from goal. Burton instantly came out and smothered the shot with his body which was then cleared away. An inspirational save that was typical of the whole team on the night.

This team is not afraid of meeting challenges and at the moment, the self belief is there for all to see.

Result: Wakefield Res 1 - 0 Farsley Celtic Res
Sep 15th Ossett Albion Res v Wakefield Res

The reserves visited local rivals Ossett Albion today and came away comfortably with three points from a three goal victory.

After a slow start by both sides, Wakefield, orchestrated in the middle of the park by Stevenson, took control of the game and virtually dominated the first half. The opening score was in the fifth minute. A long throw by Rothera was met by Townend who flicked the ball on to Shooter. He pulled the ball over to Dos Santos who placed the ball in the net. A period of constant pressure was rewarded when they scored their second on 15 minutes, with a cross from Amos, that was tapped in by an unmarked Rothera in the six yard box. From the restart Wakefield went straight back on the attack and created several good situations. The pick of these was on 30 minutes when a cross from Dos Santos was beautifuly hit on the half volley by Townsend only to see the Ossett keeper pull off a marvellous save.

The second half was a more competitive affair. Ossett came out with more determination and desire, but despite a strong performance in the opening fifteen minutes of this half, they were unable to create any clear chances to get back into the game. It was during this period that Battye and Brock demonstrated excellent defensive qualities and dealt with everything thrown at them. Such was the standard of their performance,16 year old debutante goalkeeper Burton, did not have a shot to save all game. The game was wrapped up in the 85th minute with the best goal of the match. A mazy dribble by Amos on the right, resulted in a cross to the back post. Anderson timed his run to perfection and volleyed the ball into the goal. Three nil and it was fully deserved.

Result: Ossett Albion Res 0 - Wakefield Res 3
