Apr 13th Wakefield Reserves v Bradford Park Avenue Reserves

Wakefield completed their last match of the season with a win over local rivals Bradford PA, with a performance that was a lot stronger than the usual end of term outings.

This was a close game from the kick off with both sides demonstrating a competitive edge and a good level of skill on a very difficult surface. Clear cut chances were not in abundance as both sides showed good defensive qualities and awareness around their own penalty box. The erratic bounce on the hard surface resulted in both teams meeting the ball early and clearing away from the defensive zone quickly, when at times there was the opportunity to relax on the ball and start a more constructive passage of play. However, the tempo of play had been set and both sides worked hard to force the other into errors.

It was an error in the 22nd minute that led to the opening score. A poor clearance by the Bradford keeper fell to Blair. Unmarked and with time to kill, he produced the most delicate chip of the ball that floated sweetly into the goal. The style of the goal was as far removed from the style of play in the match that you could possibly imagine. A wonderful moment to witness!

On 30 minutes Wakefield should have gone two up. A break by Amaefule on the left, led to McGahan being played into the box. With players available for the tap in he elected to go alone and instead drove the ball into the side netting from a difficult angle. A good position wasted!

Five minutes later, Amaefule again opened up the Bradford defence with a pass to Blair. This time his chipped shot over the keeper was narrowly wide.

Bradford battled hard to stay in the game and regularly put Wakefield under pressure. They were awarded a free kick in the 36th minute some 35 yards out. The ball was crossed into the penalty box and somehow Alex the Wakefield keeper managed to totally miss the ball when he came to punch it clear. The ball fell advantageously to Bradford and was headed into the goal.

The second half carried on in the same manner as the first half, with Bradford enjoying the first 15 minutes of the half more than Wakefield. Both sides were very industrious in the midfield areas and alert defensively.

For Wakefield, Tom Bucknall was dominant in the midfield. Strong in the air and in the tackle, he put in a good performance for the side, while Sykes on the wide right was always available for the pass and forever looking to turn defence into attack.

It was Sykes who began a lightning quick break on the right in the 50th minute that involved Blair and Amaefule. Neat passing between the three worked the ball the length of the field and it was disappointing that the final shot narrowly missed.

On 65 minutes Amaefule was replaced by Bates and this change of focus for the Wakefield attack, changed the game. Bates is a strong runner with the ball and on several occasions he made telling runs between defenders to open up the defence. Bradford found it difficult to mark Bates and a number of chances fell his way to settle the match for Wakefield.

However, despite the narrow misses, he was involved in the move that led to the winning goal in the 88th minute. A long throw from Clarke was collected by Bates. He controlled the ball instantly and turned a pass inside to Blair who calmly side footed the ball into the net. To finish the season with a win is a good feeling.

Result:  Wakefield Reserves 2 - 1  Bradford PA Reserves

Since January, this squad of players has evolved into a strong unit. They are very difficult to beat and have worked extremely hard in training to improve their fitness levels and technique. There is a lot to look forward to next season and a finish of fourth place this time, behind Farsley, Altrincham and Guiseley, in a strong Reserve team league is very creditable. From the touchline, I speak for Carl, Phil and myself when I say it has been enjoyable to be involved in this development and take us seriously guys, when we say we are looking for even bigger improvements come August time. To quote Michelangelo : “ the greatest danger for most of us, is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we achieve it.”
Apr 10th Ossett Albion Reserves v Wakefield Reserves

Wakefield continued their excellent finish to the season after working hard to win at near neighbours Ossett.

The opening goal came just before half time when Scott Rushton had time to take the ball down before smashing it into the goal from six yards.

The second goal came midway through the second half. Fit again Marc Townsend was the scorer, the goal a powerful drive from 20 yards that cannoned into the net off a post.

Wakefield Reserves v Ossett Albion Reserves

Marc Townsend capped his return to action, following his terrible injury five weeks ago, with a solid performance and a well taken goal in the 60th minute, to earn Wakefield a deserved victory on the night.

This outing by the reserves was a much improved performance. The play was sharper, the awareness was brighter and the movement off the ball had a lot more intelligence. The first half was a keenly contested affair, but both teams lack the subtlety with the final pass that would have opened up the play and scoring chances. The midfield contest was intense with both sides collecting an equal share of possession and the first opportunity of the night fell to Wakefield. A through ball from Ibrahim, who had an excellent game, found Amaefule, whose lob over the goalkeeper drifted sweetly into the net. Ten minutes later a neat passing move by Ossett gave Facey the chance to score, but his shot was just wide of the target. Ossett had a good opportunity from a free kick, also taken by Facey, but his thunderbolt of a shot was dealt with by Wright in the Wakefield goal.

The second half continued at a fast pace, with both teams starting sharply. Ibrahim put in an excellent delivery to Amaefule in the penalty box, however the resulting header went over the bar and two minutes later, Bucknall picked up a loose ball and went on a mazy dribble that beat two men with ease, but the final shot did not reflect the good work beforehand. In the 60th minute Wakefield scored their second goal. A poor clearance by the Ossett keeper was collected by Ibrahim on the right hand side. He played the ball through to Amaefule who set up Townsend. With calmness, the ball was dispatched low and hard into the goal. Ossett reacted immediately and once again, the ever dangerous Facey tested Wright with a rocket of a shot which was heading for the top corner. The Wakefield keeper Wright flung himself into action and tipped the ball over the bar. An excellent piece of play from both players! Five minutes later Facey found himself in the clear again but his lob bounced over the bar and out of danger. On a softer surface he would have been turning away in celebration.

The game remained competitive until the final whistle and a lot of positives could be taken from the performance by the reserves. The organization was good; the cover work was excellent but the most impressive part of the game was the speed at which the team turned defence into attack. They broke from the back at pace and Ibrahim in particular was a joy to watch when moving into attacking positions. His running was selfless and his delivery was of a high standard all evening. With two games remaining the team can finish fourth should they win both games. This will be a very good and deserved finish for the reserve team squad. Can you do it? We believe that you can.

Ossett Town Reserves v Wakefield Reserves League Cup group 4

If there was an award for the most boring, dull and dreary game of football, then this match would have been a strong contender to collect the prize. Played in windy conditions, this was a cup match and a local derby. What we got was an error strewn game with neither side showing the desire to go on and win the match, along with the passion of an over 65's whist drive!
Both sides had good wins earlier in the week against good opposition, but on this showing it was hard to understand how this had happened. When Wakefield do not concentrate on their game, they let it go completely and then struggle to establish themselves in the match. The most entertaining moment in the first half was a glorious miss by the Wakefield striker Burton, who when presented with an open goal from five yards out, managed to find the next field instead of the net!

The second half continued as before the break, with both teams finding it difficult to raise the standard. Wakefield created a couple of good chances, the best of which fell to Rothera from a Collinson free kick. His header was placed wide of the target. Ossett too had their chances the best of which was in the 88th minute, when their striker found himself with only the Wakefield keeper to beat. An excellent block and save by Wright ensured Wakefield did not lose.

The plus points on the day were that we did not lose and we kept a clean sheet. The negatives are best left in the after match discussion that took place in the changing room!

Wakefield Reserves v Altrincham Reserves

Wakefield welcomed Conference club Altrincham FC to College Grove on Wednesday evening and put in a disciplined and professional performance to earn the points.

The match got off to a fast start from both teams and the central midfield pair for Altrincham were particularly impressive with their sharp movement and passing. Both sides got into good attacking positions on several occasions, but neither were able to provide the final pass that could have opened the scoring. All too often both attacks were guilty of wanting an extra touch or a bit more time to despatch the shot on goal.
In the 25th minute Wakefield took the lead from a through ball that was over hit and went on to the goalkeeper. A weak clearance was collected by Blair who despatched the ball into an open goal. Fivteen minutes later Wakefield had a chance to go further ahead when a good run and shot, also by Blair, was well saved by the keeper.

The second half also started quickly, with Altrincham dominating the possession and territory. A break in the 55th minute saw Alex the Wakefield keeper, pull off a good save to keep them in the match. Wakefield reacted immediately to this inspirational block by their keeper and launched a few attacks of their own. An excellent pass in the 60th minute by Blair found Kendal whose sharp strike was well saved by the keeper.
Five minutes later Altrincham won a corner. The delivery went to McAllister who was unmarked in the box and put a well placed header into the net.
Wakefield fought back and began to frustrate Altrincham. In midfield Bucknall, McGahan and Rothera worked hard to close down the opposition and pick up the free ball to launch Blair, Ibrahim and Kendall, while at the back Hobson and Brock stood strong and dominant when Altrincham counter attacked. Their efforts led to Wakefield's second goal in the 70th minute. A free kick from 40 yards out was headed clear by Altrincham, but it only fell to Blair. He latched onto the ball quickly and drove the ball low and hard into the goal. The last 15 minutes saw Altrincham throw everything at Wakefield, but a good disciplined performance and high levels of concentration and teamwork when defending, saw Wakefield collect all three points.

Farsley Celtic Reserves v Wakefield Reserves League Cup Group 4

This was a fascinating game of football between contrasting styles of play, that in the end saw Farsley finish as winners of a very close contest, where both sides had good chances to take something from the match.

In the blue corner we had Farsley. They are a first class side who move the ball at pace, are well organised and work hard for each other to allow this style of play. There is much to admire with this team. Equally, in the gold corner there was Wakefield, who on the night gave an excellent demonstration of discipline, defensive shape and cover and sheer grit and determination to frustrate Farsley and their attacking approaches.
The first real chance of the evening fell to Farsley in the fifth minute when a free kick, floated in from the left was volleyed towards goal. Only an good save from Wakefields Latvian keeper prevented a score. But it wasn't only Farsley who could make a chance. A good run by Hobson saw him pass two defenders easily and his pass to Kendall found him unmarked and with only the keeper to beat. With the Farsley keeper closing down quickly, his delicate lob narrowly missed the target.
The midfield exchanges were a close contest. Wakefield, with McGann prowling like the hungry lion, Stevenson always available and always organising the troops were a match for the Farsley midfield, who enjoyed the majority of possession but were unable to hurt Wakefield. Anderson worked hard to support the lone striker Kendall with his bursts from midfield and all of the defenders stuck manfully to their task and smothered anything Farsley could offer. It wasn't until the 37th minute that Farsley opened the scoring. A through ball from midfield resulted in the Farsley striker hammering the ball over the keeper to score.

The second half continued where the first half had finished only this time possession was equally shared. Wakefield were determined to level the score and launched several attacks on the Farsley goal in the opening minutes. A pass from Anderson in the 50th minute found Stevenson with only the keeper to beat but his shot was well saved. Other good plays by Wakefield also came to nothing as Farsley demonstrated that they knew how to defend when called upon. The game continued to be a close contest with both sides creating chances to score but neither side could get the break that would influence the remainder of the match.

At the end, Farsley took the points from the game (wasn't this a League Cup game?) but it is fair to say that Wakefield took just as much from a fixture in which they were defeated. The side demonstrated their abilty to stick to a game plan and to work hard on the "ugly" parts of the game. This was a very good team performance with excellent individual displays from Stevenson and Brock, but the real plus on the night was the relentless effort and the unselfish willingness to run the extra yard for each other. Well done; it was a pleasure to watch from the touchline.

Mar 2nd Wakefield Reserves v Bradford PA Reserves League Cup Group 4

To the disappointment of all concerned Wakefield lost at home, when in reality they should have been well clear by half time. If only the finishing had been better! The lessons learned from excellent victories in the previous two games had too easily been forgotten and this was a real frustration for the management team when the game was over.

The first half belonged to Wakefield. They made a good start to the game and were frequently getting behind the Bradford defence with well worked moves. However, the final ball into the box was either not good enough, failed to hurt the opposition or lacked the necessary composure. Bradford had free kicks in good positions, but they too lacked the firepower to open the scoring. Twice in the first half Wakefield did have the ball in the net, but both strikes were disallowed. The first decision owed more to the officials having sympathy for an embarrassed goalkeeper rather than anything else! The scoring was finally opened in the 40th minute by Wakefield following excellent work by Ibrahim on the right and a neatly placed header from Anderson.

The second half was a different story. Bradford altered the focus of their attack with half time substitutions and the impact was immediate. Following several quick raids at the Wakefield defence Bradford were awarded a free kick in the 48th minute. The cross into the penalty area was not cleared on two occasions and the loose ball was put in the net by Hollingworth. Straight from the restart Wakefield went on the attack and missed another scoring chance, when Bucknall, with only the keeper to beat, managed to place the ball wide of the target. Bradford started to control the midfield area and in particular McLoughlin was dominating proceedings with thoughtful passing and good positional awareness. It was he who scored the second for Bradford on 55 minutes when a long ball was not dealt with by the Wakefield defence. The ball fell to McLoughlin, who lobbed the ball into an empty goal from 40 yards, with the Wakefield keeper well away from his goal.

Despite a late surge by Wakefield, Bradford earned a deserved victory with resolute defending and a more determined frame of mind.

Bradford Park Avenue Reserves v Wakefield Reserves

Goals from Powell (2), Ellis, Blair & Anderson earned Wakefield an emphatic win at the Horsfall Stadium.

Straight from the kick off Wakefield set the pace of the game with a high tempo pass and move approach and after only two minutes they created their first chance of the game. A clever through ball from Ellis found Bates at the edge of the box. He comfortably beat the covering defender only to see his shot narrowly miss the target. Two minutes later, Blair was found unmarked in the box and once again the shot was marginally wide of the post. They created their third clear cut chance after only ten minutes but once again the shot, this time from Anderson, did not register the opening goal.

With all the goalmouth action so far taking place in the Bradford penalty area, it was against the run of play that Bradford should create a goal scoring opportunity. Good defensive work by Hollingworth broke up yet another Wakefield attack and the move eventually led to Sherman with only the keeper to beat. Excellent anticipation by the goalkeeper, resulted in him smothering the attempted shot and the danger was soon over.

Wakefield, marshaled superbly by Hanogue all evening, re-grouped and stepped up their game and in the 23rd minute they scored the goal they deserved. From a free kick whipped in low by Sykes, the ball was controlled by Ellis, who calmly placed the ball into the net. The second goal came seven minutes later. A long throw from Rothera was headed on to Blair. He reacted instantly to drill the ball into the net and on 44 minutes Anderson made it three for Wakefield with a classy finish following neat interplay on the edge of the box.

Bradford started the second half the stronger of the two teams, however it was Wakefield who created the early chances. On 50 minutes a break by Blair found Bates whose half volley blazed past the post. Five minutes later a high free kick from Colllinson was headed on by Bates to Rothera whose acrobatic overhead kick skimmed the top of the cross bar.

On the hour Bates was replaced by Powell and his impact was immediate. A through pass found Anderson out on the left. He managed to attract the attention of three defenders before teeing up the ball for the oncoming Powell. His sweetly struck half volley scorched into the net, via the underside of the bar, with the keeper stood rooted to the floor.

Ten minutes later Bradford were generously awarded a free kick on the left hand side. The resulting cross eluded everyone in the box and crept into the net at the far post, however in the 75th minute Wakefield restored their four goal lead. Once again Anderson collected a pass on the left hand side and he tormented and teased the defenders all the way to the dead ball line. The ball was struck low and hard into the six yard box and unfortunately for Bradford, the ball cannoned off the retreating defender (OG) into the goal.

The scoring was completed in the 78th minute by Powell who scored his second of the game following excellent work by Ibrahim and Sykes on the right hand side.

Watched by first team manager Gareth Stoker, this was an excellent performance by Wakefield Reserves. There were some outstanding individual displays on the night, but it was a real pleasure to witness and admire a genuine team effort from all of the players involved. The standard has been set; let’s raise the bar and see if the challenge can be met.

Feb 2nd Wakefield Reserves v Hyde United Reserves

Wakefield Reserves thoroughly deserved to win this entertaining match at College Grove, not only for the bright and intelligent football they played, but also for their willingness to take the game to the opposition at all times.

The first half, once the opening exchanges had settled down, was all Wakefield. Several golden chances were created which were either spurned or missed and the new midfield pair of Ellis and Hobson controlled much of the play and possession in the first 45 minutes. The defence was rarely called upon, but when required, Laverey, playing in central defence, had already anticipated the danger and broke down the attack with ease. Up front, Dominic was excellent. Always a threat and always chasing the lost ball, his performance deserved a bagful of goals. He will play worse than this and score a hat trick. One particular piece of brilliance saw him lose the defender on the dead ball line and make space, where none was to be had, only for the resulting cross into the penalty box to go begging.

The second half carried on where the first half had ended, but to everyone’s surprise it was Hyde that scored the opening goal. A corner in the 55th minute was not cleared properly and the ball was struck on the half volley, straight into the net. Going a goal behind galvanized the Wakefield side. In midfield, Hobson and Ellis picked up the pace and it was not long before the equalizer was scored. In the 65th minute a Wakefield corner was headed on by Hobson. The ball fell to Moxon who controlled the ball and back heeled the ball into the net. Five minutes later Wakefield were in front. A through ball by Clarke found Bates, who casually lobbed the keeper with his right foot. On the 80th minute, Hobson scored a third for Wakefield. From another corner he struck the ball low and hard into the net with a side foot shot and two minutes later Bates made it 4-1. After receiving the ball from Clarke, he turned sharply and drilled the ball home. Overall, this was a first class performance from the Reserve team. There was a spirit and camaraderie that never left the players even after going a goal behind. The football, for long periods was thoughtful and controlled and if the side had found a ruthless streak in front of goal, the visitors could have been severely embarrassed.

Woodley Sports Reserves v Wakefield Reserves

Wakefield travelled to Woodley Sports for only their second fixture in eight weeks. At the end of a game which they lost, after controlling play for long periods and giving debuts to five players, they departed feeling rather bemused with the final scoreline.
The opening exchanges were fairly even, but after 15 minutes the Wakefield central midfield duo of Bucknall and Rothera started to get the upper hand over the opposition and dictate proceedings. Bramald playing as a lone striker was relentless with his efforts up front and was a continual problem for the Woodley defenders. Ibrahim was picking up the ball in good positions and finding plenty of space and Sykes was persistently probing down the right hand side, but it wasn't until the 44th minute that Wakefield created their first clear chance on goal. A cross from the right found Moxon alone in the penalty area. The ball was controlled instantly but unfortunately the resulting shot missed the target.

The start of the second half carried on as before, but it was Woodley that broke the deadlock on 55 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after a push by defender Burton. The penalty was converted by Woodley and the opening score gave them a new found impetus. Now it was the Woodley midfield pairing that were dominating the game and for the next ten minutes they created three excellent chances which they failed to convert. Once again, Wright in goal for Wakefield pulled off two stunning reaction saves at close range to keep Wakefield in the game On 60 minutes Wakefield substituted Moxon for Bates and also changed the formation. Bucknall and Rothera started to pull the strings once more and on 70 minutes Wakefield equalised. Neat passing work on the left hand side gave the ball to Ibrahim. His slick back heel found Bates on a driving run into the box. He crossed hard and low to the far post where Sykes coming in from the right wing despatched the ball with clinical precision into the net. The equaliser put Woodley on the back foot and it was now Wakefield who looked the likely winners. However in the 89th minute Wakefield conceded a soft goal when there had been several opportunities to clear the ball and this was repeated again in the 90th minute to give the scoreline a flattering slant to the opposition.

Result: Woodley Sports Reserves 3 - 1 Wakefield Reserves

Farsley Celtic Reserves v Wakefield Reserves

A depleted Wakefield Reserves came up against league leaders Farsley Celtic, following a five week period without a fixture on a bitterly cold December evening.

The opening ten minutes of the match were played at a furious pace as both sides tried to establish a hold on the game and the Wakefield side tried to settle into a rhythm, as several players were missing and some were needed to play out of position. The first real chance of the game came on the 11th minute when Farsley were caught on the break. An excellent through ball by McGahan found Kendall in space and on his way towards goal, however the finish was poor. Following this break, Farsley opened the scoring on 13mins after a neat passage of play on the edge of  the goal area.

Straight from the re-start Farsley made it 2-0 as a result of poor defending by Wakefield. By now Farsley were playing some excellent and intelligent football, moving the ball around quickly in midfield and switching play effectively when required. Wakefield were finding it hard to close down the opposition when not in possession and struggled to keep hold of the ball when they did win it. The third goal by Farsley followed a free kick that was headed onto the post and the attacking side reacted quickest to the rebound. Immediately after this Farsley scored their fourth on 36 minutes with a stunning strike from the edge of the box and made it 5-0 on the stroke of half time after some good work on the right.
Thankfully half time arrived and this gave Wakefield a chance to reflect and consider their performance in the first 45 minutes. Two substitutions were made at the break and a different Wakefield side emerged from the dressing room from the one that trudged off at half time.

Straight from the restart the Wakefield side made their intentions clear. Tackles were now being won and loose balls were picked up by Wakefield's midfield as they started to dominate. Farsley, against the run of play created a good chance inside the Wakefield area, but an excellent save at point blank by Wright in the Wakefield goal kept the spirits high. Wakefield continued to frustrate Farsley, who must have expected a stroll in the park after the first half, but Wakefield could not convert their endeavour and possession into goal scoring chances. On 76 mins Farsley made it 6-0 after Wakefield failed to clear the ball on several occasions, however on 80 mins Wakefield scored the goal they deserved. From a free kick, the ball was headed clear by Farsley but was played straight back in by Moxon. The finish from Kendall was clinical as he tucked the chance away into the corner of the net. On 80 mins Kenworthy was substituted for Burton, who had an immediate impact. A free kick by Sykes was headed down by Kendal to Burton. Deft footwork and a quick spin saw the ball drilled into the side netting when a goal should have been the desired result.

Despite the final score of 6-1 there were some positives to be taken from the game. Wright had an excellent game in goal and his saves inspired when the side were up against a wall. Tim Clarke had a good debut at left back with some solid defending and intelligent distribution of the ball, but the real plus was the second half performance. Wakefield were relentless and ruthless and must regret that they did not apply themselves for the whole 90 minutes.
