Report

Dec 29th Wakefield v Bradford PA
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield's unbeaten run came to an end as they were beaten by a strong Bradford side in an entertaining game at College Grove.

Bradford took the lead on eight minutes when Mike Moseley was given time and space to tap the ball past Andy Woods from close range following a low cross.

Delroy Ferguson struck a post for Wakefield in the fifteenth minute but they didn't find the equaliser until first half stoppage time. A Wes Milnes header was cleared from underneath the cross bar by a defender before the ball was put back across goal for Graham Marchant to smash it into the net from three yards.

Bradford started the second half strongly and deservedly regained their lead in the 53rd minute. A right wing corner was met by Matt Daly who powered a header into the roof of the net via the top of Steve Nicholson's boot, who was stood on the post.

Wakefield had a glorious chance to equalise on 67 minutes when Marchant turned well to beat two defenders but was denied by Bradford goalkeeper Jon Worsnop in a one on one situation.

Bradford then seemingly put the game beyond Wakefield's reach four minutes later when Chris Gaghan converted a low cross at the far post.

Wakefield tried hard to find a response and Chris Howarth was denied by a good stop from Jon Worsnop on 73 minutes.
The home side did pull a goal back two minutes from time when Marchant was on hand to slot home Chris Howarth's driven ball into the penalty area, but they could not find an equaliser despite sustained pressure during four minutes of added time.

Dec 22nd Garforth Town v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield made it six games without defeat after a solid display at Garforth Town. Wakefield started the game with Demi Kyriacou still out injured and Paddy Mumbly missing the match through suspension.

Wakefield first threatened inside ten minutes when good work by Delroy Ferguson put Graham Marchant in on goal. The Wakefield striker tried to round Garforth goalkeeper Karl Spratt, but Spratt just got a finger to the ball to divert against Marchant and out for a corner.

On 17 minutes a great cross by Will Ryder was met by the head of Chris Howarth at the far post but the ball flew wide and on 25 minutes Jay Sobers' curling free kick was tipped over by Spratt at full stretch.

Marchant's shot on the turn was just off target and Howarth fired straight at Spratt after jinking past half of the Garforth players as Wakefield finished the first half well on top.

Wakefield took a deserved lead with 15 minutes remaining. Ferguson battled well in midfield to retain possession before sending Marchant clear with a well weighted pass. Marchant's initial effort was well saved by Spratt, but the rebound went straight back to the Wakefield frontman who slotted the ball home.

Three minutes later it was 2-0 as Ferguson beat Spratt in a race to the ball before rounding the Garforth goalkeeper and slotting the ball into the unguarded net.

Wakefield almost scored a third in the last minute but Declan Normaschild's low drive was beaten away by Spratt.

Dec 8th Wakefield v Woodley Sports
Report by Dan Bownhill

Wakefield continued their good form with a solid home display to run out comfortable winners against visitors Woodley Sports.

Wakefield started the game without Demi Kyriacou who missed the game through injury. Declan Normaschild also missed out as he served a one match suspension. Bobby Stevenson got through a late fitness test but could only make the substitutes' bench.

Wakefield enjoyed the better of the possession in the first half and deservedly took the lead on 37 minutes when Delroy Ferguson's low drive struck Graham Marchant to wrong foot Woodley goalkeeper Liam Higginbotham and nestle in the bottom corner.

Woodley came straight out in the second half in a determined fashion and Danny Stubberfield did well to get the better of Craig Laight two minutes into the half but could only find the side netting.

Wakefield took control of the game once more and doubled their advantage on 59 minutes when Ferguson beat Higginbotham in a race to the ball to chip it over the Woodley goalkeeper and into the unguarded net.

The lively Ferguson almost made it three just four minutes later but his curling effort from 20 yards struck the post.

The closest Woodley came to pulling a goal back was when a corner flicked off the head of Marchant and hit the inside of the far post before been cleared.

But it was Wakefield who always looked more like scoring a third goal. In injury time s superb passing move ended with Marchant's low cross finding substitute Tom Denton but his near post effort flew wide.

Nov 28th Newcastle Blue Star v Wakefield
Presidents Cup 2nd Round
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield came from behind to move into the third round of the President's Cup after clinching a superb victory at Newcastle Blue Star.

Paddy Mumbly started the game for Wakefield in place of Steve Nicholson and one other change to the side that won at Rossendale United saw Graham Marchant return to the starting eleven in place of the injured Demi Kyriacou.

Newcastle were bright during a lively first half, but Wakefield always looked dangerous on the break. On 13 minutes claims for a penalty were waved away by the referee after a defender went through the back of Chris Howarth in the penalty area as he shaped to shoot.

An amazing block denied Scott Bell at the other end and Andy Woods was on hand to pull off a good save from a lobbed effort. The ball broke to Bell but he somehow dragged his shot wide with Woods out of position and only Tommy Agus on the goalline to beat. A mistake by Wes Milnes on 28 minutes led to another fine save by Woods.

Just before half time a good run by Blake Norton found Howarth who turned inside but shot too close to Newcastle goalkeeper Ryan Smith.

Newcastle took the lead in the final minute of the first half when a low cross was sent over towards Bell, who slid in for the ball with Craig Laight. The ball looped up into the top corner past the helpless Woods.

Wakefield almost snatched an equaliser in first half stoppage time. Norton's good run led to him playing the ball into Marchant who controlled it well on his chest and was unlucky to see his shot well parried away by Smith.

In the second half Newcastle started well again. On 53 minutes Lee Novak raced clear and chipped the ball over the on rushing Woods but it landed the wrong side of the post.

Wakefield equalised on 62 minutes when Jay Sobers' driven ball into the box looped up off Newcastle captain Steve Birks, over goalkeeper Smith and nestled into the far side of the net.

On 68 minutes Wakefield almost gifted Newcastle the lead once more, but Bell's effort went into the side netting after Woods came out and failed to reach a loose ball before the Newcastle frontman.

Wakefield were more on top as the game wore on. An excellent move on 76 minutes saw Paddy Mumbly find Agus who exchanged passes with Norton before driving wide from a tight angle.

Three minutes from time Wakefield so nearly won it. Great skill from Jay Sobers in the penalty area left him with a good shooting opportunity, but his effort clipped a defender and looped up onto the face of the crossbar.

Smith was on hand to tip over a long range Will Ryder effort as the game ticked into extra time.

Wakefield dominated extra time. On 93 minutes Norton found Marchant in the penalty area but his low shot was well saved by the legs of Smith and on 99 minutes Howarth broke clear down the right and picked out Norton with a far post cross but his header flew just over the bar.

On 101 minutes a Norton corner was headed back across goal by Laight to Milnes but he headed straight into the arms of the grateful Smith.

Wakefield took the lead on 109 minutes after a handball in the penalty area. Howarth stepped up to send Smith the wrong way from the spot and put Wakefield into the next round.

Nov 24th Rossendale United v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield continued their recent good form with a well earned victory at Dark Lane.

One change to the eleven that started at Ossett Albion saw Jay Sobers return to the side in place of the suspended Bobby Stevenson.

Wakefield took the lead on nine minutes when Chris Howarth beat Rossendale goalkeeper Lloyd Rigby in a race to the ball to send a low cross into the box for Blake Norton to tap into the unguarded net from close range.

The home side's best chance of the first half fell to Ben Lloyd but Andy Woods was in fine form to tip his flicked effort over the cross bar at full stretch.

Norton fired just wide on 32 minutes as Wakefield were always dangerous on the break. The second goal came a minute before half time when a well weighted ball from Sobers put Chris Howarth in on goal and the Wakefield striker smashed the ball past Rigby from 15 yards.

In the second half chances continued to come at both ends. Woods did well to tip over a long range effort and at the other end Rossendale managed to scramble the ball clear after a dangerous Tom Agus free kick caused problems in the home penalty area.

On 71 minutes Demi Kyriacou had a header disallowed for offside and Rossendale raced straight up to the other end of the field and pulled a goal back. Mario-Sergio Daniels' good run ended with him beating Woods with a low shot from close range.

Rossendale should have equalised with four minutes remaining but Daniels shot from only six yards was miraculously saved, and held, by Woods.

Wakefield sealed the game with a third goal in the final minute of the game. Good work by substitute Delroy Ferguson down the left saw the tricky winger make his way into the penalty area before pulling the ball back to fellow substitute and debutant Paddy Mumbly who placed a low shot into the net from 15 yards.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield extended their unbeaten run to three matches by beating Rossendale on a wet afternoon at Dark Lane.

Blake Norton registered his first goal for the away side in only the fifth minute after Chris Howarth had beaten the outcoming Rossendale keeper and sqaured the ball to him leaving him with an easy finish.

Both sides were restricted to long range efforts after the early goal and both sides kept the ball boys busy with some wayward shooting.

As the first half was coming to a close, Howarth netted his first goal since August with a good finish from the right hand side of the box and Wakefield deservedly went in 2-0 up at the break.

In the second half, Rossendale improved but failed to really test Andy Woods in the Wakefield goal and indeed it was the visitors that looked the more likely to score when Craig Laight's goalbound header was hacked away and then Wakefield scored when Demi Kyriacou got on the end of Howarth's cross but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Within a minute of this decision, Rossendale had pulled a goal back following a mistake down Wakefield's right hand side by Declan Normaschild, and a good move led to a way back into the match.

The home side looked dangerous as the game ticked into the final ten minutes, and Woods had to be at his best to deny the equaliser with three minutes left as he made a point blank save.

Wakefield scored their third goal in stoppage time as the two substitutions combined. Delroy Ferguson chased a nothing ball forward and won the ball, and unselfishly crossed to Paddy Mumbly who scored a debut goal to seal the points.

Team: Woods, Normaschild, Agus, Ryder, Milnes, Laight, Nicholson, Sobers (Mumbly 84), Kyriacou (Ferguson 84), Howarth, Norton.
Sub not used: Macquarrie.

Nov 17th  Ossett Albion v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield were unlucky to go away with only a point after a superb performance in an entertaining game at Dimple Wells.

Wakefield started well and came close to opening the scoring on 26 minutes when great football by Chris Howarth and Demi Kyriacou set up Will Ryder, but his shot from 12 yards was well blocked by a defender.

A minute before the break a lofted ball forward left Howarth with a clear shot on goal but the Wakefield striker lifted the ball over the crossbar.

Ossett's best chance of the opening half came right on half time when Shane Kelsey's drilled effort was held by Andy Woods at the second attempt.

In the second half Wakefield hit the woodwork following a corner early on before Ossett took the lead against the run of play on 50 minutes. Following a scramble in the penalty area, the ball broke to Kelsey who made no mistake from close range.

Wakefield battered Ossett for the remainder of the game. Howarth headed just wide on 67 minutes before the equaliser finally arrived two minutes later. Tommy Agus showed good strength to hold off two defenders before squeezing a shot into the far corner of the net from a difficult angle.

Blake Norton twice volleyed just wide for Wakefield and Howarth saw a driven shot and a header well saved. Ryder also came close in the closing minutes as his hard shot cracked against the post.

Howarth then found himself in acres of space with the goalkeeper well out of position but volleyed over the bar with a first time shot.

Ossett did have a couple of chances on the break in the last ten minutes but Darrell Jenkinson found Woods in good form to make a smart save and in the final minute Steve Nicholson blocked a close range effort right on the goalline following a corner.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield picked up an away point this afternoon at local rivals Ossett Albion after an impressive second half performance at Dimple Wells.

The first half was ruined by the strong winds and the sloping pitch and neither side had any clear cut opportunities but Wakefield had the more of the possession in the middle of the park as the half wore on.

A couple of minutes into the second half, an Ossett defender headed against his own cross bar following a corner, and inevitably, they went down the other end and scored following a mistake from Craig Laight.

Wakefield were still the better side however, and Chris Howarth headed just wide from Steve Nicholson's left wing corner, and then Howarth had the ball in the net but it was disallowed for offside while Howarth was booked for scoring.

The equaliser came twenty minutes from time when good play again from Howarth fed Will Ryder, who knocked it right to Tommy Agus. Agus got the ball on his left foot and beat Ossett keeper Neil Bennett with a well placed shot into the far corner.

Blake Norton's well struck volley flew inches wide a couple of minutes after the equaliser as Wakefield continued to impress, but Andy Woods was called into action at the other end but fortunately Ossett's shot from the edge of the area was straight at him.

The best move of the afternoon again involving Howarth and Bobby Stevenson found Will Ryder who controlled it and struck the ball well with his right foot which beat the keeper but unfortunately it bounced back off
the post again.

Ossett could have snatched three points when they arguably deserved none in stoppage time when a corner that was bundled towards goal was cleared off the line by Nicholson.

Team: Woods, Normaschild, Agus, Stevenson, Milnes, Laight, Nicholson, Ryder, Kyriacou, Howarth, Norton (Ferguson 77).
Subs not used: Sobers and Macquarrie.

Nov 10th  Wakefield v Newcastle Blue Star
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield earned an impressive victory against in form Newcastle at College Grove to register their first league win since September 11th.

Steve Nicholson was forced to drop to the bench for Wakefield after picking up a knee injury against Garforth in midweek. Declan Normaschild started the game at right back, with new signing Tommy Agus coming into the side at left back. Blake Norton returned to the side after missing the midweek fixture as Rob MacQuarrie and Will Ryder could only make the substitutes bench.

Wakefield had the ball in the net on 5 minutes. Craig Laight's header was cleared off the goalline and when the ball came back across Declan Normaschild headed it across the face of goal and Wes Milnes nodded it in from inside the six yard box. Unfortunately for Wakefield the referee ruled that Normaschild was climbing and disallowed the goal.

The home side did take a deserved lead on 12 minutes when Demi Kyriacou beat the offside trap to race clear and slot the ball between Newcastle goalkeeper Craig Summersgill's legs and into the net.

A nice through ball from Kyriacou on 23 minutes put Jay Sobers clear of the Newcastle defence. The lively Wakefield midfielder beat Summersgill in a 50/50 challenge for the ball and it broke kindly for him to smash it into the unguarded net from close range.

Agus' hard free kick was palmed away in first half injury time and with the Newcastle goalkeeper Summersgill carrying a bad injury after the first goal only one result looked on the cards.

Newcastle enjoyed the majority of possesion in the second half but struggled to break down a strong Wakefield back four. Their best chances fell to Scott Bell and Neal Hooks but both failed to trouble Andy Woods and should have done better from good positions.

The visitors were also reduced to ten men midway through the half when Chris Carr was dismissed for a second booking.

Subs: Davies (nu), Foster (for Webster), Gordon (for Bell)

Phil Rann's Report

Wakefield beat Newcastle Blue Star with a confident performance this afternoon at College Grove.

Wakefield handed a debut to left back Tommy Agus who has recently signed from Alfreton Town.

The home side were in front inside the first ten minutes when good play by Chris Howarth set up Demi Kyriacou clean through on the keeper.  Kyriacou made no mistake with a similar finish to his goal at Garforth in midweek.

Fifteen minutes later, it was 2-0 when Kyriacou expertly held the ball up and slotted a brilliantly weighted ball through to Jay Sobers. After winning the ball in a challenge with the keeper, he kept his head to chip the ball home with his left foot.

Just before half time, Andy Woods pulled off a blinding point blank save when Wes Milnes had sliced his clearance to keep the Blues' two goal advantage intact.

In the second half, Howarth almost got Wakefield's third but his shot screwed just wide of the far post, while at the other end, Newcastle were mostly restricted to long range efforts but a couple of corners caused problems in the Wakefield six yard box.

Kyriacou shot straight at the keeper as Wakefield comfortably saw out the end of the match.

Team: Woods, Normaschild, Agus, Stevenson, Milnes, Laight, Ferguson (Nicholson 76), Sobers, Kyriacou, Howarth, Norton (Ryder 90).
Sub not used: Macquarrie.

Attendance: 76

MOM: Milnes

Thought Kyriacou and Howarth played really well together this afternoon. Demi was as good as he was at Garforth and looked at home up front whilst Howarth held the ball up well and looked comfortable. The new left back looks very consistent while Milnes had a cracker especially in the second half.

Nov 6th Garforth Town v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield lost again despite leading for the majority of the game at Garforth as too late goals saw them go home with no points from the game.

Wakefield were without Graham Marchant (ribs) and Blake Norton (unavailable) for the game. Jay Sobers was also only fit enough to make the substitutes bench after picking up an injury against Buxton on Saturday. Rob MacQuarrie returned to the side after a spell on the sidelines with a foot injury.

Wakefield went ahead in the 5th minute. Chris Howarth's flick on was picked up by Demi Kyriacou who lifted the ball over a defender before running around the Garforth man and slotting the ball past Karl Spratt in the Garforth goal.

Garforth failed to break Wakefield down in the remainder of the first half and the visitors went in in front at the whistle.

On 52 minutes Garforth were reduced to ten men when Nathan Kamara was dismissed for a second booking.

Wakefield searched for a second goal and came close as first Wes Milnes headed wide before Howarth missed the best chance on 72 minutes when he placed his shot the wrong side of the post after been put through by substitute Sobers.

Kyriacou saw an effort charged down by Spratt, before just as it looked like Wakefield were going to go away with three points, Garforth equalised. Substitute Sebastian Muddel turned Dale Smith down the right wing before curling the ball beyond Andy Woods and into the goal via the far post.

Greg Kelly scored the match winner for Garforth in the 6th minute of stoppage time when the ball broke to him in the penalty area and he fired it past Woods from close range.

Phil Rann's Report

Wakefield's miserable form continued with a 2-1 defeat at 10-man Garforth Town tonight.

Demi Kyriacou fired home in the 5th minute to give the away side the lead in a first half that was littered with free kicks and bookings.

In the second half, Chris Howarth should have made it 2-0 but the defender got back to him to poke the ball out for a corner.

Garforth's Nathan Kamara was dismissed for a second bookable offence, and then Dale Smith replaced Declan Normaschild at left back.

The home side's Muddel easily beat Smith in the far corner before coming back inside and firing beyond Andy Woods to net the equaliser on 83 minutes.

Kyriacou's attempt to put Wakefield back in front five minutes later was blocked in the six yard box, before Garforth grabbed the win in the sixth of five added minutes when Smith missed his clearance and Kelly slotted home to send Wakefield home with three points less than they deserved.

Nov 3rd Wakefield v Buxton FA Trophy 2nd Qual Round
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield bowed out of the FA Carlsberg Trophy at the second qualifying round stage after a professional performance by visitors Buxton saw them through to the next round.

Buxton went ahead on 5 minutes when poor defending allowed Paul Walker to get on the end of a pass into the penalty area and slot the ball underneath Andy Woods. Woods was on hand to make a point blank save on 12 minutes and parry away a stinging shot from Jason Bradley on 28 minutes as the visitors were well on top in the early stages.

Wakefield began to settle down and Graham Marchant tested Scott Hartley with a 25 yard effort five minutes before half time, the Buxton goalkeeper pulling off a superb save to tip the ball over. Woods was again called upon howver before half time as he reacted well to keep out Walker's low drive.

Wakefield started the second half brightly as Marchant turned well on the edge of the area but again found Hartley in good form as his shot was tipped around the post.

Buxton's second goal came on 69 minutes when James Turley put across a left wing free kick that sailed over everyone and nestled in the far side of the net.

Wakefield bowed out of the FA Trophy after a passionless performance against Premier Division opponents Buxton at College Grove.

A goal in each half which resulted from poor Wakefield defending was enough to send Buxton through to the next round, with the home side mostly limited to half chances, though Graham Marchant did test the Buxton keeper with an effort either side of half time, but Wakefield will be disappointed overall after such a good performance at Nantwich in the last round.

Oct 31st Harrogate Railway Athletic v Wakefield West Riding County Cup 1st Round
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield were beaten by Harrogate at Station View to bow out of the West Riding County Cup at the first round stage.

Harrogate took the lead on 12 minutes when James McDaid's speculative lob from 35 yards looped over Andy Woods into the top corner of the goal.

Wakefield's best chance of the first half fell to Wayne Anderson but he dragged his shot well wide after doing well to break clear of the Harrogate defence down the right hand side.

Woods was on hand to make a good save from Scott Ryan's curling free kick on 28 minutes and tip over Nicholas Smith's 31st minute effort to keep the score at 1-0.

Harrogate scored their second goal on 52 minutes when Declan Normaschild's back header fell short of Lee Wilson, who had replaced Woods in the Wakefield goal at half time, and Smith nipped in to slot the ball home.

It was 3-0 on 71 minutes when Robert Morgan was able to head home from inside the six yard box following a corner.

Wakefield could not find a break through as Chris Collinson's free kick skimmed the roof of the net and Ash Duncan was denied by John McLaughlin in a one on one situation late on.

Oct 27th Skelmersdale United v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield slumped to a three goal defeat at The Ashley Travel Stadium after gifting hosts Skelmersdale three sloppy goals. Wakefield started the match without the injured Will Ryder and Demi Kyriacou with Declan Normaschild and Blake Norton coming into the side to replace them.

Skelmersdale took the lead on 12 minutes. Tony Evans pulled away from Normaschild at the back post to plant a close range header into the net following Kevin Leadbetter's deep cross.

The best chance Wakefield could muster was a 31st minute free kick from Bobby Stevenson which was comfortable for Ryan McMahon in the home goal.

Evans had a chance to make it two before half time but dragged his shot wide following more good work from Leadbetter.

The second half was only five minutes old when Skelmersdale doubled their lead. A near post cross found Evans who had got in front of his marker and he made no mistake from close range.

Wakefield almost pulled themselves back into the game on 68 minutes when substitute Ash Duncan hit the cross bar with a looping far post header from Norton's right wing corner.

But it was all over seven minutes later when John Cass smashed the ball past Danny Trueman at his near post after Skelmersdale had broken quickly following a corner at the other end of the field.

Substitutes Duncan and Kyriacou both planted headers off target in the last fifteen minutes but Wakefield could not find a breakthrough.

Phil Rann's Report

Three defensive errors saw Wakefield slide to a heavy away defeat at the hands of Skelmersdale United this afternoon.

Two changes to the side from the fine win at Nantwich on Tuesday saw Declan Normaschild replace the injured Will Ryder at left back, and Blake Norton start on the left wing instead of Demi Kyriacou who was injured in the warm up.

Skelmersdale were ahead inside the first quarter hour after too much space was given to their number 8 at the back post from a left wing cross. His header was too good for the backtracking Danny Trueman.

Wakefield were having more of the play in the midfield but created few clear cut chances. They did however have a large shout for a penalty turned down when a Skelmersdale defender looked to have flicked the ball on with his hand and it was to be a key moment as the referee waved away the appeals.

In stoppage time, a good whipped cross from Norton needed any contact from Chris Howarth to level the scores but the striker couldn't quite reach it as it flew agonisingly past him.

Five minutes into the second half, the game was as good as settled when Skelmersdale scored their second goal when their number 9 beat Wes Milnes at the near post and slotted home.

After two substitutions including a debut for under 19s striker Ash Duncan, Wakefield tried, but failed to register a goal. Duncan came closest when his header at the back post hit the bar with the keeper beaten and the follow up cross saw Craig Laight head over after being unsighted by the defender in front of him.

Duncan was involved again from a Steve Nicholson cross but headed well over when unchallenged.

It was 3-0 with 20 minutes left when Normaschild miscontrolled on the left wing leaving two against one Wakefield defender. The ball was played to the far side as John Cass beat Trueman at his near post.

Now the more likely team to score was Skelmersdale but Wakefield held out to keep the score at 3-0. Wakefield handed another debut to Dale Smith at left back but it was too little too late.

Team: Trueman, Nicholson, Normaschild (Smith 76), Stevenson (Kyriacou 55), Milnes, Laight, Ferguson (Duncan 55), Sobers, Marchant, Howarth, Norton.

Oct 23rd Nantwich Town  v Wakefield FA Trophy 1st Qualifying Round Replay
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield progressed through to face Buxton in the next round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy after a battling performance led to an extra time victory in Cheshire.

Nantwich went ahead early on when Andy Kinsey drilled the ball into the bottom corner on 6 minutes, despite being under pressure from Wes Milnes.

Wakefield equalised five minutes later. A dangerous Will Ryder corner was not dealt with by the Nantwich defence and the ball curled into the net, via the slightest of touches from Milnes.

Wakefield then went in front on 20 minutes. A Delroy Ferguson cross was just missed by Chris Howarth. The ball continued through to the far post to Demi Kyriacou who drove the ball into the far corner from the edge of the area.

Nantwich fought back and equalised on 27 minutes. Danny Trueman came to punch a corner kick but was beaten to the ball by Glyn Blackhurst whose glancing header found the net.

Wakefield had further chances to score before half time but Graham Marchant's stinging shot was well tipped over by Rob Hackney and Milnes could only send a header across the face of goal after Howarth's corner.

The second half was a fairly even affair with chances falling to both sides. Kyriacou saw a snapshot fly wide and Marchant's attempted overhead kick flew over the bar. Then Marchant crossed for Howarth to head at goal. The Wakefield man's looping attempt was goalbound but superbly kept out by a fingertip save from Hackney.

Ashley Carter drove just wide for Nantwich as the game ticked into its final minute, but neither side could muster a third goal in normal time and an extra 30 minutes was required.

Wakefield battled well throughout the extra period and managed to restrict the home team to only half chances at goal which were dealt with well by the Wakefield defence.

Wakefield found the third goal they needed on 108 minutes. Ryder picked the ball up on the left wing and crossed for Marchant to get in front of his marker to send a header bouncing into the bottom corner.

Wakefield defended the game out superbly well to earn a place in the next round. Nantwich were reduced to ten men with a minute of extra time remaining when subsitute Pavol Suhaj was dismissed for jumping into Bobby Stevenson with an elbow raised. The Nantwich man had only been booked two minutes before the incident.

Phil Rann's Report

Wakefield won through to the Second Qualifying Round of the Carlsberg FA Trophy with a win over Nantwich Town in Tuesday night's replay at the Weaver Stadium.

Wakefield stuck with the same side that drew at College Grove on Saturday, and the only changes were on the bench where Declan Normaschild and Blake Norton replaced Andy Battye and Marc Townsend.

After a delayed kick off of ten minutes, Nantwich were the first to threaten and they scored with just about their first attack inside ten minutes when their player shot from 25 yards and the ball bounced just in front of Danny Trueman making it too difficult to stop.

Within five minutes however, Wakefield were back on level terms when Will Ryder's right wing corner found the net without a touch from either side.

Another five minutes passed before Wakefield took the lead when good work by Graham Marchant and Chris Howarth set up Demi Kyriacou. His left foot shot was deflected into the far corner away from the goalkeeper.

Before the half hour mark, it was 2-2 when a good Nantwich move on the left wing resulted in a cross and a neat chip over the oncoming Trueman into the net.

Marchant almost put the away side back in front before half time when shooting from 15 yards but the keeper made a smart tip over.

The second half similar to the first half in that Nantwich had more of the posession but Wakefield looked dangerous on the break. Kyriacou shot high and wide, and while Nantwich moved the ball around well, they barely tested Trueman with only a couple of half chances that were straight at him. At the other end, Marchant attempted a bicycle kick from a flick on but the ball flew just over.

Into extra time then, and Nantwich looked the more likely to score and a couple of decent shots from outside the area were well charged down by Wakefield defenders. In the second period, Howarth tested the keeper again with a fine chipped effort but again the keeper was equal to it.

However, Wakefield took the lead in the 110th minute through Marchant when he headed in from a Steve Nicholson cross to register his third goal in the last three games.

A Nantwich substitute was sent off for a second bookable offence soon after coming on after clashing with Bobby Stevenson, and the referee added six minutes onto the end of extra time but Nantwich couldn't find a way through and Wakefield will face Buxton at home on the 3rd November in the next round.

Team: Trueman, Nicholson, Ryder, Stevenson, Milnes, Laight, Ferguson (Normaschild 120), Sobers (Norton 73), Marchant, Howarth, Kyriacou.
Subs not used: Bucknall, Duncan, A.Woods.

Oct 20th Wakefield v Nantwich Town  FA Trophy 1st Qualifying Round
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield came from behind to earn a deserved replay against Nantwich after a superb second half performance. The home side started with the same eleven that lost at FC United of Manchester.

Nantwich were the first to threaten on six minutes. Danny Griggs' 20 yard free kick brought a brilliant finger tip save from Danny Trueman and from the resulting corner Andy Bott headed inches over.

On 18 minutes Wes Milnes missed a back header leaving Trueman stranded at the edge of his area. Bott was left with the goal gaping in front of him but somehow managed to place his shot wide.

Wakefield began to settle into the game and Craig Laight headed just wide with a back post header following Will Ryder's corner.

The second half was dominated by Wakefield. Graham Marchant dragged a long range shot wide early in the closing period but it was Nantwich who took the lead against the run of play when a smart move allowed Glyn Blackhurst to nip inbetween the Wakefield defence and slot the ball past Trueman.

Wakefield put Nantwich under constant pressure for the remainder of the game. Milnes headed wide from six yard under pressure on 70 minutes before the equaliser eventually arrived thirteen minutes from time. Chris Howarth flicked the ball over his head for Marchant to head in from four yards at the back post.

Jay Sobers saw a low shot well smothered but Nantwich almost won it in the last minute. Substitute Andy Kinsey took the ball past Ryder and Laight but drilled his shot inches wide of the post.

Phil Rann report
Wakefield came from behind to earn a replay with Nantwich Town in the Carlsberg FA Trophy with an impressive second half display at College Grove.

Wakefield stuck with the same side that lost at FC United of Manchester, while goalkeeper Andy Woods made his return to the squad after three weeks out with a place on a bench which included Ash Duncan from the under 19s.

There were few chances for either side in the first half with both teams limited to half chances and long range efforts but the one main chance fell to Nantwich when Wes Milnes missed a back header which wrong footed keeper Danny Trueman. Trueman recovered well to save the shot at the edge of his area but the ball fell nicely to another Nantwich player who somehow missed the gaping goal.

The second half was a better game to watch, while Wakefield started the better, and Steve Nicholson and Delroy Ferguson linked up on the right wing but Ferguson's shot flew high and wide.

Nantwich took the lead against the run of play with a well worked team goal. A neat back heel and a one-two between two other players set up the goal which was scored down to the right hand side of Trueman.

The home side came back well after going a goal behind but although there was excellent build up play on both wings and through the middle with Jay Sobers and Chris Howarth usually involved, they created few clear cut chances.

Twelve minutes from time however, Graham Marchant held the ball up on the left wing, moved it inside to Sobers who crossed the ball in. Howarth won the header to set up Marchant who made no mistake from four yards out.

Both teams looked to be settling for a draw but a good piece of individual skill almost won it for Nantwich when their player danced around Will Ryder and Craig Laight but drilled his shot inches wide of Trueman's post.

The replay will take place at Nantwich on Tuesday (7.45pm) which means Wakefield's away match at Rossendale Utd has been postponed.

Oct 13th FC United of Manchester v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield were beaten at Gigg Lane after conceding two goals direct from free kicks in the second half. Wakefield made no changes to the side that were held to a draw at Harrogate Railway Athletic in midweek.

FC United enjoyed the better of the first half possession, but largely wasted it as they more often than not opted to shoot from long range rather than try and create an easier goalscoring opportunity.

Wakefield always looked capable of worrying the FC United defence on the break throughout the opening period, and had the ball in the net on 44 minutes, but Chris Howarth's superb finish was disallowed as the referee's assistant judged he had strayed marginally offside.

In the second half, play continued in much of the same pattern. Rory Patterson shot into the side netting for FC United, before the home side were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Chris Baguley stepped up and curled a sweet shot into the goal to give FC United the lead.

Wakefield hit straight back and equalised three minutes later. Their best move of the match saw Jay Sobers put Graham Marchant clean through on goal with a nicely weighted through ball. Marchant made no mistake as he coolly slotted the ball past the oncoming Sam Ashton in the FC United net.

Demi Kyriacou rattled the FC United crossbar with a bicycle kick following Steve Nicholson's cross fourteen minutes from time, but it was the home side who were to run out the winners. They were awarded what looked a harsh free kick on the edge of the area and Baguley stepped up to beat Danny Trueman with another curling shot, which was very similar to his first goal.

PHIL RANN'S REPORT

Two dubious free kicks from 20 yards settled this encounter in a evenly contested match at Gigg Lane.

Chris Howarth had the ball in the net for Wakefield on 41 minutes at the end of a poor first half, but the play was brought back controversially for offside.

In the second half, FC United took the lead from a free kick given after both players jumped and the FC United player didn't win the ball. Good finish over the backtracking Steve Nicholson to the left of keeper Danny Trueman.

Within four minutes, Wakefield were level with their best move of the match. Delroy Ferguson collected the ball on the left wing, moved it inside to Jay Sobers, who then sent a perfectly weighted ball through to Graham Marchant who was one on one with the keeper and made no mistake to bring the scores level.

The away side were now the better side, and firstly, a three-on-two situtation was wasted when Ferguson chose to take on a second defender instead of play it wide to the better placed Marchant and Howarth, and then when Demi Kyriacou hit the bar with a fine bicycle kick from a Nicholson free kick.

As the match ticked into the final ten minutes, FC United were gifted another free kick inside the D, and the same player beat Trueman with a well placed shot into the corner.

Wakefield tried in vain to get back into the match, but the best they could come up with was a header at the back post by Ferguson which went harmlessly wide.

Oct 10th Harrogate Railway v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

An injury time equaliser prevented Wakefield from gaining their first victory since the return of Ronnie Glavin at Station View, from a game in which a draw was probably a fair result.

Harrogate should have had a penalty as early as the 7th minute but the referee waved away the appeals, despite what looked nothing but a foul by Craig Laight.

Wakefield settled down more and came into the game. Delroy Ferguson snatched his shot on the turn wide and a Bobby Stevenson close range effort was hacked clear off the goal line before half time.

Harrogate came into the game more in the second half. Three minutes in a header was cleared off the line before Danny Trueman reacted well to keep out the deflected follow up with his legs.

Harrogate goalkeeper John McLaughlin did well to deny Chris Howarth before Wakefield took the lead on 61 minutes. Graham Marchant laid the ball off to Demi Kyriacou who set it up nicely for Jay Sobers to send a thunderous 25 yard drive into the top corner.

McLaughlin did well again to deny Howarth whilst Marchant's run between the two centre backs saw him with a clear sight of goal but his attempted lob over McLaughlin was off target. Substitute Steve Kenworthy was also left with a good chance to shoot but could only lift the ball into McLaughlin's arms.

At the other end Harrogate always looked dangerous from crosses. Scott Ryan's and Dave Conway's efforts were both cleared away from inside the six yard box.

Harrogate eventually snatched an equaliser deep into stoppage time. Will Ryder's foul on the edge of the area led to a swinging free kick, which was met by Richard  Marshall at the near post. His header looped over Trueman and struck the inside of the far post before nestling into the net.

Oct 6th  Wakefield v Chorley
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield earned their first clean sheet of the season, but were held to a goalless draw by Chorley at College Grove.

The home side welcomed new signing Jay Sobers into the team in place of the injured Delroy Ferguson. Andy Shields also missed out after picking up an injury at Garforth Town in midweek, with Marc Townsend starting the match in place of him.

Chorley were the better side in the opening period of the game. Phil Cooney and James Holden both volleyed over early on and James Mullineux's glancing header bounced inches wide following a corner.

Wakefield almost took the lead against the run of play on 31 minutes when Sobers' cross was diverted towards goal by Graham Marchant. The ball looped over Chorley goalkeeper Peter Collinge, but unfortunately for Wakefield struck the crossbar.

Chorley found Danny Trueman in fine form in the Wakefield goal just before half time to keep out Danny Nolan's low shot.

Wakefield were forced into a change at half time with Bobby Stevenson coming on for the injured Rob MacQuarrie who left the field with a suspected broken foot.

Chorley again started the half brightly with Eddie Stanford firing just wide from a free kick and then hitting the post with a low shot on 49 minutes.

Wakefield settled down towards the end of the game, although Chorley always looked dangerous on the break. Chris Howarth turned inside a defender on the hour but saw his attempt blocked and Demi Kyriacou's long range drive was just off target. Marchant then hit the side netting with a shot on the turn from a tight angle.

Chorley almost snatched victory with three minutes remaining when former Wakefield man Neil Smith broke clear but he dragged his effort wide.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield were fortunate to come away with this match with a point after a poor performance for the second home match in a row.

The home side were still without the injured Andy Woods, Blake Norton, Delroy Ferguson and Andy Shields, with new signing Jay Sobers coming into the side, while Marc Townsend made his first start of the season after scoring in midweek at Garforth.

Graham Marchant hit the bar for the home side in a poor first half, while Wakefield received some more bad news at half time when Rob Macquarrie went to hospital with a suspected broken foot.

All the best chances in the second half fell to Chorley. Danny Trueman was called into action with two point blank saves before Chorley hit the post as Wakefield rode their luck to stay on level terms.

Former Wakefield striker Neil Smith came off the bench for the away side and beat Trueman with a right foot shot but it flew just wide of the post.

Wakefield almost pressed the self destruct button when Wes Milnes backward header caught out Trueman after a lack of communication but the ball rolled wide.

The home sides best chance of the second period fell to Chris Howarth but his shot from the edge of the area was blocked, while substitute Steve Kenworthy attempted to lob Chorley keeper Peter Hollinge but he recovered to get back to his line in time.

Team: Trueman, Macquarrie (Stevenson 46), Fawcus, Kyriacou, Milnes, Normaschild, Sobers (Laight 89), Bucknall, Marchant, Howarth, Townsend (Kenworthy 65).

Oct 2nd Garforth Town v Wakefield Unibond President's Cup 1st Round
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield travelled to nearby Garforth for the first round of the President's Cup with a prize of a long trip to Newcastle Blue Star awaiting the winners. Wakefield were without recent signing Blake Norton for the game with Tom Bucknall starting in place of him. One other change from the side that lost against Bridlington Town saw goalkeeper Danny Trueman coming into the side in place of the injured Andy Woods.

Wakefield started brightly and deservedly took the lead on 14 minutes. Chris Howarth's low cross found Tom Bucknall whose shot towards goal was too weak. However, the ball went straight to Graham Marchant who cleverly helped into the back of the net from 12 yards out with the back of his heel.

Garforth equalised eight minutes later when a low left wing cross found Jason St Juste who was left with a tap in. A good ball in by Garforth on 37 minutes found George Williams but he chipped the ball over the crossbar when he should have done better.

Wakefield regained the lead on 61 minutes. A hard ball in by Demi Kyriacou flew towards Marchant. The Wakefield striker attempted a scissors kick but missed. The ball carried on through to Delroy Ferguson at the far post who made no mistake from close range.

A Marchant shot was too close to the goalkeeper two minutes later as Wakefield threatened to extend their lead. A further chance fell to Ferguson, who was put in by a superb Marchant through ball, but this time the tricky Wakefield winger volleyed wide.

As the game ticked into injury time, Howarth beat the offside trap but shot too close to the goalkeeper and Kyriacou drove wildly off target with substitute Marc Townsend in acres of space down the right. Wakefield were left to rue their missed chances as Garforth equalised through a Karl Simpkins header deep into stoppage time.

Garforth started extra time brightly and took the lead for the first time in the game on 100 minutes when St Juste smashed the ball through a crowd of players into the net for his second goal of the match.

Wakefield rallied well and equalised with seven minutes left. Substitute Craig Laight challenged the goalkeeper for the ball. The ball rebounded off Laight and towards the goal and Townsend followed up to smash it in right on the line.

Wakefield defended stoutly for the closing minutes, with seven minutes of stoppage time played after an injury to the Garforth goalkeeper.

Wakefield were the first to take a penalty in the eventual shoot-out. Townsend stepped up but hit the outside of the post. Greg Kelly then just beat Trueman before Steve Kenworthy shot too close to Garforth goalkeeper James Holdroyd to leave the scores at 1-0 to Garforth with Wakefield having taken one more penalty.

Wakefield looked out of it but were given a lifeline when Milton Turner sent Garforth's second penalty straight at Trueman. Chris Fawcus sent Holdroyd the wrong way to equalise and Trueman then guessed right to deny Chris Kamara to leave the scores at 1-1 with three penalties each taken.

Trueman stepped up himself and thundered the ball straight past Holdroyd into the centre of the net. St Juste then pulled it back to 2-2 after sending Trueman the wrong way. Howarth then slotted home Wakefield's final penalty. Simpkins stepped up for Garforth and needed to score to keep them in the game. His shot rebounded back out off the crossbar to leave Wakefield the winners and with a place in the second round.

Wakefield went through to the next round of the Unibond Presidents Cup with a penalty win after an entertaining contest at Garforth.

Graham Marchant flicked home a Delroy Ferguson shot after 25 minutes to put the away side ahead. It was soon 1-1 though as Garforth began to create the better chances before the break.

In the second half, Wakefield had the better of the play and took the lead when Ferguson finished well after good build up play in midfield.Wakefield had chances to kill the game off, when firstly Andy Shields' shot was well saved by the Garforth keeper, and then Chris Howarth turned inside but his well struck shot was straight at the keeper.

Inevitably, Garforth scored their second equaliser in stoppage time when they bundled home a free kick.

The home side started the brighter in extra time, and took the lead when St Juste scored his second of the game, but it was Wakefield's turn to equalise in the second period when a combination of substitute Craig Laight's first touch and Marc Townsend's tap-in levelled the scores.

With plenty of stoppages for injuries, penalties were inevitable, and after a second period of extra time which lasted 25 minutes because of the stoppages, they arrived.

Townsend missed for Wakefield as his penalty hit the outside of the post, while Garforth made no mistake. Steve Kenworthy's shot was saved which left the home side with a great chance to move 2-0 up in the shootout. Danny Trueman, re-signed to cover for the injured Andy Woods, however, saved the penalty, and then when Chris Fawcus scored and Garforth missed again, it was 1-1. Trueman then stepped up himself and fired Wakefield in front before Garforth scored to level the scores again. Howarth kept his nerve to make it 3-2 Wakefield, and Garforth's penalty hit the cross bar and finally Wakefield had won a match that they deserved to win based on their second half performance.

Sep 29th  Wakefield v Bridlington Town
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield were defeated in their opening game under new manager Ronnie Glavin against a spirited Bridlington side at College Grove.

Wakefield started strongly with new signing Blake Norton causing Bridlington all sorts of problems down the left wing. On 16 minutes his superb back post cross picked out Graham Marchant, but the Wakefield frontman headed over the crossbar.

A minute later Chris Howarth clipped the outside of the post for Wakefield with a 20 yard effort as Wakefield continued to pose a significant threat to the Bridlington defence. Bridlington goalkeeper Michael Price was in fine form to keep out Demi Kyriacou's show on the turn on 26 minutes.

Two minutes later, Bridlington were awarded a penalty after Andy Woods was adjudged to have brought down an opposition player in the penalty area. Paul Stoneman stepped up but saw his shot superbly saved by Woods and the score remained goalless.

Bridlington began to come more into the game up to half time. Stoneman saw a powerful header fly just over following a corner and Woods was down well to deny Luke Smith just before the break.

Three minutes into the second half Bridlington took the lead. A dangerous cross into the penalty area was met by Joe Brown who headed into the corner of the net.

Wakefield came back strongly at Bridlington and had a particularly good spell around the hour mark as Norton and Chris Fawcus were causing Bridlington problems down the left hand side, but Wakefield just were not getting the final touch onto their dangerous balls in.

On 59 minutes Delroy Ferguson slashed wide at the far post after Howarth had flicked on Norton's cross and Howarth himself drove wide from 20 yards two minutes later.

A Fawcus cross on 64 minutes deflected off Carl Giblin to Marchant, but he couldn't control his header and the ball flew harmlessly over.

Andy Shields' long range volley five minutes from time was well kept out by Price but as the half came to a close Bridlington were defending strongly and Wakefield were unable to break them down.

Poor match and a poor performance against a poor side. The best man on the park was former Wakefield captain Paul Stoneman, but his first half penalty was saved well by Andy Woods in the Wakefield goal, and that was after Chris Howarth had hit the outside of the post with a through ball from Delroy Ferguson.

The second half was littered with free kicks and stoppages as the referee, who was at best, dreadful throughout, completely lost control of the match.

Wakefield's best player was new signing from Droylsden Blake Norton, who made a number of good runs and fine crosses into the box from the left wing.

Wakefield Football Club wish to announce that Manager, Gareth Stoker, has decided to revert to being solely a player.  In his early thirties he wishes to continue playing for a few more seasons and, with his other coaching interests, is finding the added burden of managing a UniBond club too time consuming at this stage of his career.

Gareth joined Wakefield F.C. as a player/coach at the beginning of last season and took over as manager at the turn of the year.  The Club's fortunes improved as his hard work and coaching skills brought progress on the field and a position of respectability was achieved by the end of the season.  The club wishes to place on record its gratitude for his honest endeavour and enterprise as both a player and coach during the past twelve months.

Former Manager, Ronnie Glavin, has agreed to rejoin the club immediately and looks forward to the challenge, of returning Wakefield F.C. to the position of strength it enjoyed when he was last in charge.

Sep 22nd Lancaster City v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield were left to rue several missed chances after falling to defeat by a single goal at the Giant Axe. Wakefield were without the unavailable Graham Marchant and Andy Shuttleworth for the game, with Declan Normaschild returning to the side after a long suspension and Gareth Stoker, Demi Kyriacou and Andy Woods starting the match after sitting out the game at Goole.

Wakefield started strongly. A Stoker corner in the second minute was not dealt with by the Lancaster defence but Kyriacou's powerful header was well kept out by Mark Thornley in the Lancaster goal.

Another Kyriacou header on 5 minutes after Steve Kenworthy's cross was easy for Thornley and then on 12 minutes Andy Shields struck the crossbar with a 20 yard free kick as Wakefield continued to look the more likely side to score.

On 17 minutes a Chris Howarth deflected shot was well saved by Thornley before Lancaster were gifted a glorious chance to take the lead after Rob MacQuarrie was harshly adjudged to have fouled a Lancaster player in the Wakefield penalty area. Ryan-Zico Black stepped up but found Andy Woods in superb form to keep out both the penalty and the follow up attempt.

Kyriacou and Delroy Ferguson both sent efforts off target before another Stoker corner again found Kyriacou but he headed just wide. Howarth then battled his way through on goal but fired over from a good position and a Chris Fawcus centre found Kyriacou, who did well to make space for a shot, but again missed the target.

As the game approached half time, Wakefield continue to press forward. Kyriacou headed over once more from Howarth's cross and again rose to meet a Stoker corner but sent the ball off target yet again.

Wakefield went behind four minutes into the second half. No one picked up the run of Chris Lysons after a deep ball in and he was able to come round the back of the Wakefield defence to smash the ball into the net.

Wakefield tried in vain to get back into the game. A Wes Milnes header was well kept out by a combination of goalkeeper and defender after another quality Stoker corner and Shields drove wide from 20 yards after Thornley had punched the ball clear.

At the other end, Woods kept out efforts by Stephen Skinner and Black as Lancaster were always dangerous on the counter attack.

Wakefield's best chances of an equaliser came in injury time. Firstly Stoker won the ball well with a hard tackle, but shot too close to Thornley from 15 yards and then a Stoker corner again caused Lancaster problems. Thornley managed to half punch clear but only as far as Wakefield goalkeeper Woods who had come forward for the set piece in a last ditch attempt to get something from the game. Woods controlled the ball well eight yards out, but then saw his dipping volley strike the cross bar.

Report by Phil Rann

For the third time this season, Wakefield lost 1-0 in a league match that they deserved at least a point from, and in this case, perhaps three points.

Demi Kyriacou tested the Lancaster keeper in the first minute but he was equal to the task, and then Delroy Ferguson lifted his right wing shot over the keeper but also over the cross bar.

Andy Shields hit the bar with a curling free kick with the keeper beaten, before Lancaster were awarded a penalty when Rob Macquarrie brought down a Lancaster forward. Andy Woods however saved the poor spot kick, and then made an even better save to deny the same player with the follow up.

Kyriacou's flick on led to Shields shooting just over before Wes Milnes' far post header was a whisker away from opening the scoring.

Same old story, and four minutes into the second half, Lancaster took the lead with the first mistake from the Wakefield defence.

Wakefield struggled to create the same number of chances as the first half after the goal, but Chris Howarth almost levelled the scores twenty minutes from the end but his touch wasn't enough to prod the ball home, and the touch took the ball away from Milnes sliding in at the back post.

Lancaster should have made sure of the win when a long ball through found a forward in acres of space. Woods held up the play with a good block, and that allowed Chris Fawcus to get back and make a great challenge.

Wakefield almost found a late equaliser but the Lancaster keeper was again equal to Kyriacou's header, and the Lancaster sub who had just come on helped him clear the ball off the line.

Just to prove that it wasn't Wakefield's day was still to follow though, and in a ridiculous two added minutes when it should have been at least six or seven, Woods came up for a Gareth Stoker corner. He chested the ball down, and volleyed the ball from six yards out. The ball hit the cross bar and went over with just about the last kick of the match.

Comment by Phil Rann

Thought the officials today were as ever, consistently inconsistent. The ref gave Lancaster a penalty, could say Macquarrie went through the back of him, but then the linesman missed a clear handball in the Lancaster area in the second half, I think it was their number three who had his arms up by his chest and controlled the ball with them. He let a number of Lancaster players roll around on the floor for a good minute or two each time, and then when they made a sub, their players made sure they crawled back to the dugout to waste some more time. The ref said he kept adding the time on but his watch must have stopped when he issued two minutes of stoppage time. It should have been at least six or seven. On another occasion, the officials allowed two Lancaster defenders to shove Kenworthy away from the ball which was creeping to the goal line. Just as well the advert boards weren't a bit closer and they would have shoved him over those as well. As Stoker put it 'Anywhere else on the pitch it would be obstruction and a booking'. So hard to take again, another 1-0 defeat when we deserved a lot better, the one difference was that Lancaster took their chance, we didn't.

Sep 15th Goole AFC v Wakefield Unibond Challenge Cup 1st Round
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield slumped to defeat at the first round stage of the UniBond League Challenge Cup after a poor game at Goole. Wakefield were missing goalkeeper Andy Woods (hamstring) and Demi Kyriacou (unavailable) for the game, with player manager Gareth Stoker also missing, choosing to sit out the match on the bench. Lee Wilson started the game in goal with Tom Bucknall replacing Stoker in the starting line up and Chris Coupe coming into the side for Kyriacou. New signing Asif Hussain started the game on the substitute's bench.

Wakefield were the first to threaten in the eight minute. A deep free kick was headed back across goal by Wes Milnes. Brad Hill headed clear but only as far as Graham Marchant but the Wakefield strikers attempt on goal was well over the crossbar.

Goole took the lead on 25 minutes. Wilson couldn't hold a bouncing ball following a corner and Kevin Ryan was the first to react to bundle the ball into the net.

Five minutes later Goole doubled their advantage as Ryan waltzed between the Wakefield defence before coolly slotting the ball past Wilson.

Marchant ran clear for Wakefield nine minutes before the break but blasted the ball well off target from a good position. A minute later Ryan had a golden opportunity to complete his hat trick when racing clear once more but Wilson this time was able to get down and deny him.

Chris Howarth beat a defender for pace just before the break, turned inside but dragged his shot wide of the near post as Wakefield couldn't conjour up a response.

Wakefield introduced all three substitutes at half time. Marchant was replaced by Steve Kenworthy, Hussain replaced Gary Shaw and Chris Coupe made way for Chris Hutchings.

Kenworthy made an impression on the game and Wakefield did enjoy more possesion in the second half, but failed to create many clear cut chances. On 58 minutes Kenworthy battled his way into the penalty area from the left wing but shot too close to Craig Parry in the Goole goal.

Wakefield's best chance of the game fell to Hutchings in injury time after Kenworthy played him in on goal, but he saw his chipped effort fall well wide of the target.

Goole had a chance to wrap the game up at the death when substitute Duncan Bray got the better of Hussain but Wilson got down well to make a save.

Wakefield went out of the Unibond Challenge Cup at the first hurdle this afternoon at Goole after two first half errors cost them.

Three changes from the side that beat Bradford in midweek were Lee Wilson coming into goal to replace the injured Andy Woods, while Gareth Stoker rested himself and Demi Kyriacou. They were replaced by Tom Bucknall and Chris Coupe.

Goole's first goal was fumbled by Lee Wilson from a right wing cross, and Kevin Ryan pounced to put the home side in front on 25 minutes.

Ten minutes later, it was 2-0 when a long punt forward found Ryan in acres of space and he lifted the ball over the advancing Wilson to double his tally.

The second half was better from a Wakefield point of view, in particular from Chris Fawcus and substitute Steve Kenworthy, but there were few clear cut chances, the best of which was in the final minute, when good play by Kenworthy let in fellow sub Chris Hutchings, but his shot was wide of the far post.

Team: Wilson, Macquarrie, Fawcus, Bucknall, Milnes, Shaw (Hussain 46), Ferguson, Shields, Marchant (Kenworthy 46), Howarth, Coupe (Hutchings 46)

Sep 11th Wakefield v Bradford PA
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield put in a much improved display to take all three points away from their home fixture against much fancied Bradford Park Avenue.

Wakefield fielded an unchanged starting line up from the team that lost at Curzon Ashton on Saturday, with Andy Shuttleworth missing through suspension after being sent off in the recent bank holiday fixture against Ossett Albion.

Bradford started strongly, but Wakefield always looked dangerous on the break in the opening twenty minutes. Wes Milnes headed wide for Wakefield early on after a Gareth Stoker free kick whilst at the other end the lively Ben Jones headed just wide, Paul Gedman headed against the crossbar and Chris Gaghan sent a 25 yard curler just off target.

A poor goal kick by Gary Shaw led to Jones shooting inches over before Wakefield began to settle down and come more into the game.

Delroy Ferguson saw his shot well blocked by a defender before Wakefield took the lead on 22 minutes. The ball fell to Demi Kyriacou who struck a superb, unstoppable volley into the top corner of the net from 20 yards.

Three minutes later it was almost two after a great through ball by captain Andy Shields left Chris Howarth with a sight of goal, his shot deflecting wide off goalkeeper Jon Worsnop.

Bradford then had a strong spell. Gaghan saw his miscued shot fly harmlessly wide before Andy Woods was alert to pull off a superb double save, keeping out a quick free kick and the close range follow up by Danny Meadowcroft.

Jones then equalised for Bradford when he slashed the ball into the net from close range on 36 minutes, despite Wakefield appeals for offside.

Wakefield started the second half the strongest and were the better side throughout. They took the lead on 56 minutes when Howarth released Ferguson who sent a superb lob over Worsnop and into the goal from a right wing position.

Howarth send a swerving volley just wide for Wakefield before Jones threatened at the other end as he struck the outside of the post with a long range effort.

Wakefield sealed the game 14 minutes from time with a scrappy goal. Kyriacou challenged Worsnop for the ball, the ball bounced up off the Wakefield man before striking the arriving Graham Marchant on the head right on the goalline and bouncing into the net.

Bradford failed to come up with any notable efforts in the closing minutes while Wakefield looked more like adding to their tally with Howarth just failing to convert two chances in injury time.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield beat local rivals Bradford Park Avenue 3 - 1 tonight in front of a decent crowd with an excellent all round performance.

Bradford played the ball around well in the first half but it was Wakefield that took the lead on 20 minutes when Demi Kyriacou's fine half volley flew into the net from the edge of the area to register his first goal of the season.

Andy Woods pulled off two blinding saves to deny Bradford after a free kick was taken quickly.

Ten minutes before half time, the visitors were level when a shot through a crowd of players was bundled home from close range, and Bradford could have gone ahead before the break with a corner that was headed just wide.

Wakefield had the better the second half opportunities, and Delroy Ferguson put them back in front on the hour mark after a fine team move set him free on the right hand side, and he powered the ball home from 20 yards over the advancing keeper.

Bradford always looked good going forward and a long range shot came off the outside of the post and wide, before Wakefield gained a two goal cushion when Bradford's keeper lost the ball from a set piece and Graham Marchant was there with a simple finish as he scored his first goal for the club.

There were chances for Wakefield to make it 4-1 in the last ten minutes, when firstly Chris Howarth's shot was straight at the keeper under pressure and then Kyriacou shot wide as the home side finished the match the stronger.

Sep 8th Curzon Ashton v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield were beaten by a solitary goal for the third time in four matches after conceding late in the game at Curzon’s impressive new stadium, although the performance of the team was much improved from the defeat at West Auckland in midweek.

Wakefield created the better chances in the opening period. Chris Howarth fired a first time shot just over the crossbar following good work by Delroy Ferguson and dragged a shot wide after Demi Kyriacou’s through ball but couldn’t break the deadlock.

In the second half, Wakefield started similarly. Graham Marchant played the ball into Kyriacou on 47 minutes but his first time shot dropped straight into the grateful arms of Curzon goalkeeper David Carnell.

Curzon came close to scoring on 55 minutes when Michael Norton’s header had Andy Woods beaten but was headed off the goal line by Rob MacQuarrie. Wakefield continued to look capable of creating chances on the break, Kyriacou again went close after turning inside as his shot went inches to the wrong side of the post. Gary Shaw’s free kick was too close to Carnell and Howarth’s swerving shot flew straight into the goalkeeper’s arms as Curzon held out.

The winning goal for Curzon came on 82 minutes, Andy Woods could only half punch a deep cross and it fell straight to the feet of substitute Elstrom Die who made no mistake from 15 yards. Wakefield couldn’t find a response. The closest they came to an equalizer was a Kyriacou effort a minute from time that was just off target.

Wakefield went down 1 - 0 this afternoon at the Tameside Stadium in a very even contest between two clubs who started the day in the top four.

The winner came in the 82nd minute in the first real clear cut chance that the home side had had.

The visitors had had a couple of good chances earlier in the match, Chris Howarth twice doing well to get behind the defence but one shot was over and the other was wide. Demi Kyriacou's powerful header was straight at the keeper and Andy Shields' low cross across the six yard box was deflected back to the keeper.

Sep 5th West Auckland Town v Wakefield FA Cup Prelim Round Replay
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield bowed out of the FA Cup Sponsored by e-on at the preliminary round stage after being beaten in a replay in the north east following a game of few goalscoring chances.

Wakefield made several changes to the side, Gareth Stoker, Andy Shields, Chris Collinson and Steve Kenworthy coming into the side in place of Delroy Ferguson and Chris Coupe, who bothed dropped to the bench, and Graham Marchant (unavailable) and Chris Fawcus (concussion).

Wakefield started the first half brightly, but West Auckland soon settled down and began to contain Wakefield as they did in the first match at College Grove.

The visitors were struggling to link play together and every attempted move was successfully broken down by West Auckland, although at the other end of the field Wakefield's centre halves were able to easily cope with the threat posed by the West Auckland forwards.

In the second half, West Auckland enjoyed the better of the play. Jonathan Milroy forced Andy Woods into a smart save low to his right on 61 minutes. Wakefield were struggling to create chances and could only register 30 yard shots on goal from Collinson and Shields which were both blocked.

Three minutes later Andy Woods was forced to challenge for the ball just outside his penalty area. The ball broke to Milroy, but with goal at his mercy he saw his shot bounce against a post and be cleared to safety.

Wakefield then changed their tactics, switching from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 with Delroy Ferguson replacing Andy Shuttleworth and Steve Kenworthy dropping back to left midfield.

But West Auckland had another excellent opportunity fifteen minutes from time. Milroy found himself clean through on goal but put the ball the wrong side of the post.

Twelve minutes from time West Auckland scored as Ian Maddison beat the offside trap to slot the ball past Andy Woods.

Wakefield struggled to create chances, their best efforts in the closing minutes both falling to Ferguson who saw his two efforts from 15 yards blocked by a defender.

Sep 1st Wakefield v West Auckland Town FA Cup Prelim Round
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield snatched a late equaliser to force a replay despite being outplayed by Northern League opponents West Auckland for the majority of the game.

Wakefield were without Gareth Stoker, Damien Henderson and Andy Shields for the match and it was the midfield area where they seemed to be lacking in prescence throughout much of the 90 minutes.

In the first minute Wakefield almost took the lead when Graham Marchant broke clear but lifted his shot over the crossbar.

A minute later West Auckland won a free kick which was pumped forward into the penalty area. Scott Nicholson climbed highest but his header from close range bounced wide.

On 12 minutes Demi Kyriacou miskicked and the ball fell nicely to Chris Howarth, but he couldn't control his shot and dragged the ball wide of the goal from 15 yards.

West Auckland should have taken the lead on 16 minutes when Gary Shaw misjudged the flight of the ball and missed his header. Garry Barnes raced clear but somehow missed the target from 12 yards with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Another deep free kick caused Wakefield problems on 23 minutes, Nicholson again getting on the end of it and once more seeing his headergo harmlessly wide.

The lively Chris Coupe drove inside for Wakefield in the final minute of the first half and fired wide from 20 yards.

In the second half Wakefield were again the first to threaten the scores, Howarth turning inside before firing in a shot that was well saved by Mark Bell in the West Auckland goal. Marchant picked up the follow up but Bell was again on hand to make a fine save with his legs.

West Auckland took the lead on 55 minutes. Barnes cut inside from the left wing before beating Andy Woods with a beautiful curling shot into the far corner of the goal.

Wakefield tried to pick up the tempo but were still struggling to get hold of the ball. On 59 minutes an Andy Shuttleworth free kick was met by Marchant but his header fell straight into the arms of a relieved Bell.

On 63 minutes further good play by Marchant saw him lay the ball off to Coupe. His curling cross found Kyriacou but he couldn't get enough on the ball and it skimmed off his head and harmlessly wide.

Three minutes later Woods did well to save another headed effort by Nicholson before Wakefield changed things round, bringing on Steve Kenworthy and Tom Bucknall in place of Marchant and Delroy Ferguson.

The equaliser for Wakefield came 11 minutes from time after three successive Wakefield corners, the last of which, taken by Shuttleworth, was missed by all the West Auckland defenders in a packed penalty area and dropped under the cross bar and into the net.

Wakefield were the better side for the last ten minutes, although West Auckland were still dangerous on the break.

On 83 minutes Kyriacou slashed a shot wide before Shaw's looping header four minutes from time flew over  the cross bar after another good delivery by Shuttleworth.

A minute from time West Auckland could have snatched it when substitute Lee Ellison raced clear but Woods just did enough and Chris Fawcus was able to clear the danger.

Into injury time, the ball again dropped nicely for Ellison but he placed his shot wide of the post and Wakefield could breathe again.

Two minutes into injury time Wakefield had a glorious chance to snatch victory when the ball fell to Bucknall ten yards out. His low drive cannonned back out of the bottom of the post. The rebound fell to him once more but the ball came to him far too hard and he couldn't control his second shot, the ball flying well wide of the goal.

Report by Phil Rann

The one word on Wakefield's players and supporters lips tonight will be 'Phew' after they struggled to draw 1-1 with Northern League side West Auckland Town in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.

The home side, who were without Gareth Stoker, Andy Shields and Damien Henderson, could have gone ahead inside the first minute when a neat chip from Graham Marchant was inches over the top of the cross bar. At the other end, almost immediately, West Auckland should have opened the scoring with a free header ten yards out from a set piece.

The away side were running the game in the middle of the park, and when Gary Shaw missed a defensive header, it let in Dale Jardine one-on-one with Andy Woods, but he somehow shot wide without a challenge.

Just before half time, Wakefield had their second attempt on goal when Chris Coupe cut inside, beat a defender and shot just beyond the far post in the best piece of play from the home side in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half was more of the same, and West Auckland deservedly took the lead six minutes in when their left winger cut inside and placed the ball beyond Woods into the far corner.

It could, and should have been 2-0 when another glorious chance came the way of the away side as Wakefield players stood and watched Jardine amble into the box and head towards the corner. Fortunately for Wakefield, Woods was at his best to tip the ball round the post.

In a rare Wakefield attack, Coupe almost scored direct from a corner, and on 75 minutes, Andy Shuttleworth did score direct from a corner to level the scores.

This goal meant that Wakefield enjoyed the better of the play for the last 15 minutes, and Shuttleworth almost got his second but his free kick was just wide, but West Auckland should have won it when their substitute was put clean through and again Woods had to make a fine block, while with the last kick of the match, Wakefield substitute Tom Bucknall hit the bottom of the post with a left foot effort after good play from Coupe and Chris Howarth.

The replay takes place at West Auckland on Wednesday night (7.45pm).

Aug 27th Wakefield v Ossett Albion
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield slipped to their first defeat of the season after being well beaten by local rivals Ossett Albion.

Wakefield went into the game without left back Chris Fawcus who had picked up a foot injury at Clitheroe. Chris Coupe came into the side to replace him. Other changes to the side saw Gareth Stoker dropping to the bench with Steve Kenworthy allowing Demi Kyriacou and Andy Shuttleworth to make their first starts of the season.

Wakefield started well but almost gifted Ossett an early goal in the fourth minute when Gary Shaw's attempted chest back nearly beat Andy Woods, the Wakefield goalkeeper just managing to push the ball onto the post.

A minute later Shaw's free kick rebounded back to him off the wall. His second attempt was deflected and well kept out by Neil Bennett in the Ossett goal.

Another Shaw free kick caused further danger in the Ossett penalty area, Wes Milnes climbing highest to meet the ball but the Wakefield centre back saw his header fly over the crossbar.

Ossett began to settle down more, David Syres' shot on 27 minutes flying past the net as they started to threaten the scores.

Wakefield had another good chance on 36 minutes. Andy Shields' free kick was met by Kyriacou but his glancing header went inches wide.

In first half injury time Ossett scored. The ball bobbled around in the Wakefield penalty area before David Bordman was on hand to smash it into the net.

In the second half Wakefield never really got going as it was Ossett who often looked more likely to score again.

The closest Wakefield came was on 49 minutes when Shaw's curling free kick struck the crossbar.

On 65 minutes Jason Bentley ran clean through on goal for Ossett but lashed the ball wildly wide of the target.

Four minutes later Andy Woods was on hand to pull off a superb save to deny Michael Senior's effort. Just prior to the save Wakefield's Shuttleworth had been dismissed for a second bookable offence, although both bookings could be considered harsh.

Wakefield had a glorious chance to snatch an equaliser twelve minutes from time, but Kyriacou didn't get enough power in his shot from a good position twelve yards out, the ball rolling harmlessly into Bennett's arms.

Kyriacou sent a looping header over the crossbar on 83 minutes but Wakefield couldn't find a goal and were forced to taste defeat.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of local rivals Ossett Albion at College Grove on Monday afternoon.

A goal from on 43 minutes eventually won it before a scrappy second half saw few clear cut chances and plenty of noise coming from the referee's whistle. Wesley Milnes headed over for the home side half way through the first half before Ossett spurned a couple of good chances at the other end without testing Andy Woods. The goal came just before half time after an even opening half, and just before the break, Andy Shuttleworth's drive was well tipped wide by the Ossett 'keeper .

Three minutes into the second half, Gary Shaw hit the bar from a free kick as Wakefield tried in vain to get back on level terms. Woods made a great save at the other end to keep the score at 0 - 1.

Shuttleworth was given a second yellow card, somewhat harshly, with half an hour still remaining after a clumsy tackle on the halfway line.

Ossett tried their best to generally waste time in the last quarter of the match with the referee quite happy for them to do so.

A good run by Chris Howarth set up Demi Kyriacou with a good chance eight minutes from time but his shot was weak and straight at the keeper.

Team: Woods, Macquarrie, Coupe (Stoker 57), Shuttleworth, Milnes, Shaw, Ferguson, Shields, Marchant (Henderson 74), Howarth, Kyriacou.
Sub not used: Kenworthy.

MOM: Macquarrie.

Comments by Phil:

Lets be honest, the referee had a shocker completely lost control of the match, and in the end, gave the decisions the way of the team that moaned the loudest, usually Ossett's bench. The way Ossett appealed for everything and I mean everything was ridiculous, they weren't interested in playing football, they came to stop us playing football and would stop at nothing to do that. How they only had booking amazes me especially as he booked Wakefield players for petty things.

Ossett defended well to stop us playing the kind of football we have played in the opening three matches but there were constant fouls being made time and again in their own half and in my opinion, the referee did little to stop that. Meanwhile he sent off Shuttleworth, a yellow card for each foul he made in the match, both just clumsy fouls in the middle of the park.

Wakefield weren't at their best today, but still deserved at least a point from the game. Ossett, playing against ten men for a third of the match weren't interested in anything but route one and wingeing to the officials at every opportunity.

Hopefully just a blip.

Albion take derby spoils

DERBY DAYS: Albion take all three points

Wakefield FC 0 - 1 Ossett Albion

OSSETT Albion took all three points from the first Wakefield derby of the new campaign with victory in a tight contest with UniBond Division One North rivals Wakefield FC, writes Nick Rigg.
Dave Boardman's strike just before half time was enough for Eric Gilchrist's men, who made it two wins in three days and ended Wakefield's unbeaten start to the season.

Both teams came in to the clash full of confidence following impressive weekend victories and it showed in the early stages with both sides being presented with good chances to take an early advantage.

Delroy Ferguson caused the Albion defence a host of problems with his pace and the winger came close to opening the scoring a number of times.

While at the other end, the Dimple Wells club will have been feeling hard done by after referee Storrie denied what looked to have been a clear-cut penalty by awarding a free-kick on the edge of the box.

But although Gareth Stoker's men were playing the more flowing football in the first 45 minutes it was Albion who took the advantage in to the break as Boardman was left unmarked to power a close-range effort in to the empty net after Dave Syers saw his effort blocked.

Further chances came in the second half to both sides but Albion managed to cling on to all three points to shoot them up the table after a slow start to their new campaign.

Wakefield FC: Woods, McQuarrie, Coupe, Shuttleworth, Milnes, Shaw, Ferguson, Sheilds (c), Marchant, Howarth, Kyriacou. Subs: Stoker, Kenworthy, Henderson.

Albion: Bennett, Syers, Boardman, Utley (c), Riordan, West, Senior, Seed, Bentley, Jenkinson, Wordsworth. Subs: Dickinson, Ryan, Bennett.

 Supporter comments:

1.

We certainly didn't deserve to lose with the referee doing his best to ruin what was potentially a very good game. We did seem a little disjointed upfront though. Good to see Demi back in the starting line up despite the fact that he could have perhaps done better on a couple of occasions.

Was disappointed with the reaction of some of their players at the final whistle, although I guess their over celebrations further underline their relief as they were extremely fortunate to get all three points.

Hopefully today's defeat will be nothing more than a minor set back as there wasn't too much wrong with the overall performance, just a lack of a killer ball in the final third.

2.

So frustrating! Worst game I've seen at College Grove for some time - agree with the other comments - we deserved a point at least. Think Ossett's bench and their reaction to the 2nd Half challenge by Shuttleworth was the main reason he got a second yellow card!

McQuarrie and Shaw played well and Ferguson looks as though he could be a danger to most sides.

Scappy goal and we never seemed to be able to get the ball on the ground and play football. Ah well - next stop the FA Cup - first step towards Wembley!

Aug 25th Clitheroe v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhil
l

Wakefield moved back to the top of the UniBond First Division North after coming out on top against a hard working Clitheroe side at Shawbridge.

The visitors started well as Wes Milnes headed just over the crossbar after Gareth Stoker's 12th minute corner had been put back across the face of the goal by Delroy Ferguson.
On 15 minutes Graham Marchant's shot on the turn was easy for Clitheroe goalkeeper Peter Collinge as the Wakefield frontman couldn't get enough power on his shot.

Wakefield deservedly went in front on 18 minutes. Stoker's right wing corner found the unmarked Gary Shaw who powered a header into the net from close range. Clitheroe then began to get back into the game. Ryan Fisher brought a superb save from Andy Woods on 32 minutes, the Wakefield goalkeeper getting down well to push Fisher's drive around the post.

Will Exton then struck the outside of the post for Clitheroe on 34 minutes with a powerful effort from 15 yards. The home side deservedly equalised on 38 minutes, Fisher's header from a corner just making it into the net despite Woods managing to get his body to the ball.

The second half was a pretty even affair, with both sides looking  dangerous on the break. Exton got the wrong side of Andy Shields on 57 minutes but put his attempted finish just wide of the post. Wakefield were almost gifted a second goal two minutes later when Collinge dropped a header back to him from a defender at the feet of Marchant. The Wakefield striker just managed to poke the ball towards the net, but it agonisingly rolled past the outside of the post.

On 63 minutes Wakefield did have the ball in the net when Chris Howarth slid in to convert Ferguson's cross from six yards, but the Wakefield man was adjudged offside by the referee's assistant.
A minute later it was 2 - 1. Ferguson's deep cross picked out Howarth who sent a looping header over Collinge and into the net, via a deflection off the top of Russ Clarke's head.

Clitheroe tried to come back at Wakefield but couldn't find an equaliser. The closest they came was on 72 minutes when Woods pulled off an amazing save to deny Clitheroe substitute Craig Sargeson's crashing drive. A late free kick was curled inches wide of the Wakefield goal but they held on to move to the top of the table on goal difference.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield picked up a 2-1 away victory at Clitheroe to move them back to the top of the Unibond First Division North. Gary Shaw headed the visitors in front on 18 minutes from a Gareth Stoker corner before Clitheroe equalised with a close range header seven minutes before half time. The home side hit the post before half time as they finished the first half the stronger.

Chris Howarth scored his fourth goal of the season from a Delroy Ferguson cross with a bit of help from a backward header from a Clitheroe defender, before Clitheroe once again hit back. Their number 10 slid the ball past Andy Woods after being put clean through but the ball rolled wide of the far post, before Woods made a blinding save from a set piece ten minutes from time.

  Newcastle Blue Star v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield twice came from behind to snatch a point in injury time in the first competitive match to be played at Newcastle's new home.

Wakefield fielded an unchanged line up from Saturday's home win against Radcliffe Borough, apart from Tom Bucknall replacing Chris Woods on the substitutes bench.

Newcastle took the lead in the tenth minute. A poor clearance by Chris Fawcus left Dave McTiernan with a clear shot on goal and he made no mistake from close range.

Wakefield began to come into the game more as the half progressed and came close on 18 minutes but Damien Henderson's header flew over the crossbar.

The visitors had another good chance to score on 26 minutes following a Gareth Stoker free kick, but Delroy Ferguson blasted over after Gary Shaw had headed the ball down.

A minute later, Ferguson was felled in the area, the referee's assistant signalling the penalty. Chris Howarth stepped up and found the bottom corner, despite Newcastle goalkeeper Daniel Lowson getting a hand to the ball, to equalise for Wakefield.

Wakefield continued to look the better side. Gareth Stoker drove the ball goalwards on 39 minutes after Steve Kenworthy had laid it off, but Lowson got down well to make a good save.

Newcastle came out stronger at the start of the second half and regained their lead on 53 minutes. Lee Novak finished from close range after a low cross, with the Wakefield players appealing in vain for offside.

Wakefield began to have better possesion again. Demi Kyriacou came on to replace the injured Henderson and almost equalised on 58 minutes, his shot on the turn cracking against a post.

On 76 minutes Howarth raced clear for Wakefield and attempted to lob Lowson, but the Newcastle goalkeeper managed to stretch and get a hand to the ball to turn it around the post.

Just as it looked like Wakefield were to taste defeat, they found an equaliser three minutes into injury time. Ferguson drove at goal from 20 yards. Lowson looked to have the shot covered as it flew towards the goal, but it took a wicked deflection off a Newcastle player and nestled into the bottom corner.

Aug 18th Wakefield v Radcliffe Borough
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield twice came from behind to open their campaign with a well earned home victory against Radcliffe at College Grove.

Damien Henderson lashed straight at Radcliffe goalkeeper Tim Dittmer on 5 minutes and Chris Howarth's attempted lob on 10 minutes just didn't have the legs to make into the net as Simon Kelly was able to hack the ball clear.

Radcliffe then enjoyed a good spell and went in front on 16 minutes, Ian Fitzpatrick given time and space to pick his spot in the bottom corner from 15 yards.

Wakefield equalised on 28 minutes after Delroy Ferguson's effort had been blocked in the penalty area by a Radcliffe arm. Chris Howarth stepped up to send Dittmer the wrong way from the spot.

Andy Woods pulled off a point blank range save on 32 minutes to deny Lee Connell but two minutes later Radcliffe were back in front as Steve Howson was able to divert the ball into the net via the upright, after been left free at the far post.

On 38 minutes Wakefield equalised once more. Delroy Ferguson picked the ball up out wide and coolly lobbed Dittmer from 20 yards, the ball just nestling inside the far post.

Wakefield went in front for the first time in the game three minutes into the second half. Ferguson's effort was turned behind for a corner, which was taken by Gareth Stoker. Henderson rose highest to power home a header.

On 66 minutes Dittmer did well to deny subsitute Demi Kyriacou and the follow up effort from Steve Kenworthy, keeping Radcliffe's deficit at a single goal.

Wakefield wrapped the game up with a fourth goal four minutes from time. Howarth scored his second after been given time and space to pick his spot over Dittmer and into the top corner from 20 yards.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield won their first match of the league season for the first time since 2000 with a 4-2 home victory against Radcliffe Borough at College Grove.

With Graham Marchant unavailable, Damien Henderson partnered fellow new striker Chris Howarth up front, and both started well with Howarth having an effort cleared off the line early on but neither could do anything to stop Radcliffe taking the lead after 15 minutes; Ian Fitzpatrick finishing well beyond Andy Woods' outstretched arm after Rob Macquarrie's clearance hit the referee and bounced to him.

The home side were level just twelve minutes later after a handball in the area gifted them a penalty, Howarth made no mistake from the spot sending Radcliffe keeper Tim Dittmer the wrong way.

However, Wakefield were only on level terms six minutes before Steve Howson put the visitors back in front after sloppy defending from the home side.

Once again Wakefield came back and equalised again on 38 minutes when Delroy Ferguson's cross/shot was misjudged by Dittmer and went over him straight into the net.

Radcliffe were unlucky to not regain the lead before the break when a bullet header rebounded off the post as Wakefield rode their luck.

The second half was a much better all round performance from the home side, and they were in front for the first time in the match as early as the 48th minute when Henderson met Gareth Stoker's inch perfect corner, leaving Dittmer no chance.

Dittmer kept Radcliffe in the match when he later denied substitute Demi Kyriacou's effort, and then a minute later he denied Steve Kenworthy from slotting the ball over him.

Radcliffe's Simon Kelly's good run forced Woods into a smart stop eight minutes from time, but Howarth was to score his second goal with a chip that oozed confidence in the 87th minute to make the three points safe.

Team: A. Woods, Macquarrie, Fawcus, Stoker, Milnes, Shaw, Ferguson (Kyriacou 64), Shields, Henderson, Howarth, Kenworthy (Coupe 77).
Sub not used: C. Woods

Attendance: 102

MOM: Howarth

Comment:

A very good result following on from some excellent pre-season results. Statto was very optimistic on Friday night at the Welfare. Fingers crossed for the season. I do hope that the team does well,

Best wishes

Martin.

Hall Green United  3 - 5  Wakefield Under 19's

Wakefield struggled in the first half in a strong wind and Hall Green deservedly took a two goal lead. Scott Savage pulled one back for Wakefield before Hall Green scored their third goal on the stroke of half time. Wakefield were a different side in the second half and took control of the game. Tom Denton stroked the ball home to pull a goal back after some neat footwork before Barry Rothera drove home the equaliser. Matt Jackson put Wakefield in front and Seedy Jaiteh bundled home the fifth goal from close range after a fumble by the home goalkeeper.

Aug 14th

Worksop Town 0 - 1 Wakefield

Wakefield were given a glorious chance to take the lead midway through the first half from the penalty spot after Delroy Ferguson had been felled, but Chris Howarth hammered the ball against the post. In the second half Wakefield continued to be the better side and controlled the game well. The winning goal came on 83 minutes, Chris Woods rounding the Worksop goalkeeper before attempting to finish from an acute angle. The ball was hacked clear off the goalline by a defender but the referee's assistant ruled it had crossed the line and the goal was given. There was still time for Tony Pemberton to have the ball in the net but his effort was disallowed for offside. Wakefield gave debuts to Tony Pemberton and former Guiseley player Andy Shuttleworth.

Wakefield: Woods (sub Lee Wilson), MacQuarrie, Fawcus, Stoker (sub Shuttleworth), Battye, Shaw, Ferguson (sub Hutchings), Shields (sub Coupe), Henderson (sub Woods), Howarth (sub Pemberton), Kenworthy (sub Kyriacou).

Tally Ho commented:
I thought it was an excellent performance last night. Not just footballing but the committment the side showed till the final whistle.

I don't think the goalies had much to do. The back four were solid and confident enough to play the ball out. Its the first time I've seen Gary Shaw. The midfield were lively, pacey and creative. Forward line looked good. I was impressed with Damien Henderson in his role.

Right to the end the tempo was quick.
Now I've not been Gareth Stoker's biggest fans but I was well impressed by his performance both on and off the pitch. He played well and I thought he managed well, keeping the team going till the death and not allowing them to let up.

Things look on the up with the likes of Marchant, Normanschild and Hardy(?) to add to the squad and those that may have been on trial last night.

Whitby Town  1 - 2  Wakefield

Wakefield went ahead through Chris Howarth in the first half. Whitby equalised in the second half before Demi Kyriacou scored Wakefield's winner four minutes from time.

Statto comment:

Apart from Peter Matthews and Nancy, I think I could have been the only WFC supporter.

Appears Demi has left Ossett Town and is with us for the season.
Also 2 new centre backs.
Gary Shaw, last season's captain at Bradford PA and another, Wes Milnes, last season's captain at Buxton.
Both looked very assured.
We had to use a local Whitby League keeper, looked a bit dodgy early on then pulled off some superb saves. Can't see him travelling to West Yorks to cover for Andy Woods who is still injured.
Sutcliffe the sub keeper at Frickley has moved on to Farsley (I think)
Lee Wilson was motor bike racing on Saturday, apparently at Scarbro but should be available for next weekend.

While Stoker was playing, Damien Henderson did a very impressive job of coaching from the dug out - very vocal but positive.

The first goal in particular was very impressive.-one touch football and a superb strike.
A great cross from sub kenworthy to Demi for the late winner.

Aug 11th

Brighouse Town  2 - 1   Wakefield Reserves

Brighouse went ahead early in the second half from the penalty spot after Wakefield goalkeeper Liam Burton had pulled at a Brighouse shirt. Marc Townsend raced clear to slot home Wakefield's equaliser midway through the second half but Brighouse snatched a late winner when Burton was outjumped by an opposition player on the six yard line, the ball bouncing into the net off the Brighouse player's back.

Wakefield's first team were too strong for local side Cherry Tree, winning 11-1.

Goalscorers for Wakefield were Andy Shields, Chris Coupe, Chris Howarth (4), Chris Woods (2), Mark Lem (og), Graham Marchant (pen), Chris Hutchings.

Hutchings and Woods were both trialling, as was Karl Rose who played at centre back.

Kirkburton 3 -  1 Wakefield Reserves
Wakefield were behind 2-0 at half time but got back into the game in the second half when Ash Duncan scored his first goal for the club. Kirkburton scored a late goal to seal the win. Jul 31st

Frickley Athletic 2 - 2 Wakefield

Frickley recovered from falling behind twice to share the honours in a friendly with rivals Wakefield at South Elmsall.
There was a lack of fluency among the Blues while their Division 1 opponents snatched at whatever opportunities came their way.
The visitors lost goalkeeper Andy Woods through injury in the 11th minute, Liam Sutcliffe taking over between the posts, and doing well in the 24th minute to turn a curling corner from Chris White from under the bar, and the ball was knocked back into the middle where Adam Pollock lifted his shot over.
After a free-kick by White had seen both Nathan Hotte and Richard Medcalf have shots blocked, the ball was cleared to Delroy Ferguson on the right and he made space before knocking in a low cross for Chris Howarth to fire Wakefield in front after 35 minutes.
A deep cross from Hotte was headed off the line by Andy Shield in the 43rd minute as the Blues tried to level, and Steve Ball shaved an upright with a 30 yard free-kick.
Changes were made at the interval and Frickley tried to increase the tempo, Aaron Allanson sending a 35 yard drive just wide in the 56th minute, although it needed a fearless save from Andy Jeffrey to prevent Howarth improving the visitors lead a minute later.
The Blues got on terms in the 77th minute when a low free-kick on the right from Ryan Morton was volleyed in from ten yards by Steve Heath.
Ball rattled the bar for the home side with a 35 yard drive, only for Wakefield to regain the lead in the 81st minute, a raid down the right leading to Chris Coupe's ten yard shot being partially saved by Adam Nicklin but the ball finished just inside the near post.
Once again Frickley dragged themselves back into the game, Sutcliffe being judged to have brought down Hotte in the 83rd minute.
Although the keeper manager to partially block Ryan Morton's spot kick, he was unable to prevent the same player tucking in the rebound.

from Frickley website

I think squad was: (not sure of numbers though)

Woods, McQuarrie, Fawcus, Battye, Normaschild, Andy Shields, Stoker, Ferguson, Howarth, Marchant ,Coupe

Liam Sutcliffe early sub for Woods.
Kendall also came on and at least 1 other.

Steady performance, thought Howarth and Marchant played well.

Enjoyed a pint, pies and peas and the over top enthusiasm of the tannoy announcer!!!!

Marc Townsend came on as a second half sub.
Didn't get many chances to show.

I was impressed, as last season when coming on as a sub, with his willingness to run and put defenders under pressure.

I'm not sure how he'll feature, I assume Marchant and Howarth will be the 1st choice forward line.

However, with Marchant missing the start of the season he well may get his chance.

Subs All Used- Mike Grainger, Delroy Ferguson, Rob Bloomfield & Tom Bucknall

The Athersley game was spoilt by the very windy conditions which blew straight across the pitch.

July 26th
Eccleshill United  2 - 0  Wakefield

Wakefield's first team fell to defeat in their opening friendly at Eccleshill after a goal either side of half time. New strikers Chris Howarth and Graham Marchant put in strong performances for Wakefield as did captain Andy Shields in midfield. The only injury for Wakefield was Chris Collinson who left the field midway through the first half with a calf injury. Damien Henderson also missed the game injured, but should be fit soon.

Shields, Howarth and Marchant particularly stood out for me. Steve Ball (ex Bradford PA) started the game and did ok. MacQuarrie and Fawcus were also solid. Substitutes used in the second half as we experimented a bit with different players / trialists.

Wakefield - Andy Woods (gk), Chris Collinson, Chris Fawcus, Rob MacQuarrie, Declan Normaschild, Andy Shields (c), Bobby Stevenson, Steve Ball, Chris Howarth, Graham Marchant, Darrell Kendall. Subsititutes: Delroy Ferguson, Mike Grainger, Wayne Shooter, Lee Swift, Chris Coupe, Rob Bloomfield, Andy Battye, Liam Sutcliffe (gk).

Wakefield FC will be running an under 19 team this season, under the guidance of coach Phil Burton. The team will be playing in the Northern Under 19 Alliance.

Jul 19th

Over the summer Wakefield have signed two new strikers from Harrogate Railway Athletic. Graham Marchant and Chris Howarth have both been working very hard in training and it is hoped that they can make a real impression in the goals department this year.

Leaving College Grove is Niall O'Brien. O'Brien has found himself as third choice midfielder behind Gareth Stoker and Andy Shields and has decided to leave for Eastwood Town. Attacking player Demi Kyriacou has joined local rivals Ossett Town and tall frontman Neil Smith has signed for Warrington Town.

Jul 19th

Wakefield FC captain Declan Normaschild is set to miss the early games of the season after receiving a 35 day ban after an incident during and after a recent Sunday League fixture. This is a huge blow to Wakefield as they look at making a better start this year to try and make an early impression on the league table.

One other missing person from the first fixture against Radcliffe Borough is likely to be winger Ben Hardy. Hardy has been coaching in the USA over the summer and will not return until after the Radcliffe game, but should be available for the visit to Newcastle Blue Star the following Wednesday.

Bay Athletic 2 - 1 Wakefield Reserves

Reserves lost at Bay on Friday night. This game was played at Bay's training ground at Salendine Nook. No regular first teamers from last season were involved. Unfortunate, but that's the way it goes.

First Division League Programme 21/06/2007

On the 30th May 2007 the UniBond League member clubs voted in favour of accepting the FA proposal for two regional First Divisions of 18 clubs for 2007-2008 on the grounds that the FA will work to ensure that the number of clubs is raised to 20 each division for 2008-2009 and to 22 each division by 2010-2011 at the latest.

This change created concern by those clubs involved that they would be seriously impacted by the reduced number of fixtures for next season.

Those member clubs impacted by the change were asked to decide whether they wished to accept the league fixture list consisting of the normal 17 home and 17 away fixtures (34 games) or, as an alternative, create an additional round of fixtures by placing the 18 clubs into 2 groups of 9 clubs, from which each of those 9 clubs would play a further round of fixtures, 4 home and 4 away. The clubs voted by a large majority to accept the further round of fixtures to bring the league programme to 42 games. This will apply, subject to FA approval, only to the fixtures for 2007-2008.

The proposed four groups, two in the First Division North, and two in the First Division South reads as follows.

GROUP A NORTH
Bamber Bridge
Chorley
Clitheroe
FC United of Mcr.
Lancaster City
Radcliffe Borough
Rossendale Utd
Skelmersdale Utd
Woodley Sports

GROUP B NORTH
Bradford PA
Bridlington T
Curzon Ashton
Garforth Town
Harrogate RA
Mossley
Newcastle BS
Ossett Albion
Wakefield

GROUP C SOUTH
Alsager Town
Belper Town
Cammell Laird
Colwyn Bay
Kidsgrove Ath
Nantwich Town
Sheffield
Stocksbridge PS
Warrington T

GROUP D SOUTH
Brigg Town
Carlton Town
Goole FC
Grantham T
Gresley R
Quorn
Retford Utd
Shepshed Dynamo
Spalding Utd

The FA have indicated that they are very supportive to the additional round of fixtures but have yet to ratify this proposal.
