AFC
Emley v Tadcaster Albion NCEL Division One In a match which belied its end of season status AFC Emley began their last home match of the season in a high tempo fashion against a spirited Tadcaster side who remain unbeaten in eleven games. AFC took the game to their high flying opponents and opened the scoring after 16 minutes, when Wood was put through by Laud to beat the visiting goalkeeper from close range. The game flowed from end to end with the visitors trying in vain to equalise before the break. Following the interval Tadcaster applied even more pressure and from an attack down the right on 51 minutes Watson equalised for the visitors. AFC fought back strongly and on a number of occasions had the opportunity to put the game out of reach of the visitors but a lack of coolness in front of goal meant that the scores remained level. The visitors should have been reduced to 10 men late in the second half when Higginbottom appeared to headbutt Laud after a tackle, but amazingly neither the referee or his assistant took any action when clearly one or both witnessed the incident. Result: AFC Emley 1 - 1 Tadcaster Albion AFC's next, and last, match is on 28th April away at Lincoln Moorlands. Team: Green, Mann, Clarke, Robinson, Hazelden, Hirst, Washington, Manousios (Prasher 21), Laud, Wood, Brown (Bramald 76). Sub Not Used: Dennis |

Emley v Parkgate NCEL Division One From Parkgate website Parkgate made the short journey to Emley for their division one game. It was a game where they were really lucky to take all three points, and take back top spot. It took the hosts only 57 seconds to take the lead when for the third match running Parkgate’s defence gifted their opponents with a goal. As both Daren Green and Tom Brailsford failed to clear John Wood made no mistake shooting past Darren Bonnington. It
looked like one of those afternoons when on twelve minutes Richard
Patterson was luck only to see yellow from Mr Holroyd. AFC

Worsborough
Bridge MW v 1 AFC Emley NCEL Division One AFC Emley gained revenge for an early season reverse with this hard fought win at Worsbrough Bridge. On an uneven surface, which made playing football on the ground almost impossible, Emley made better of the conditions and with Allan Laud leading the line up front it was not surprising that he scored the only goal of the game within minutes of the restart for the second half. Emley had to withstand pressure from Worsbrough but held out with the defence standing firm and Jamie Green in fine form again. Result: Worsborough Bridge 0 - 1 AFC Emley Team: Green, Mann, Wallace, Hazelden, Hirst, Taylor, Prasher, Robinson, Laud (Clarke 70), Wood (Dennis 89), Manousios. Sub Not Used: James |

Emley v Nostell MW NCEL Division One Another dismal display confined Emley to a defeat against near neighbours Nostell Miners Welfare. Only goalkeeper Jamie Green kept the score down to three. Jamie has just been called up to cover for Northern Ireland's U20 squad who fly to Israel on the 11th March. Johnson scored for Nostell in the 41st minute and Stephens (58) and Hewitt (90) to add misery to a much depleted Emley side. Players injured and one not turning up to play did not help the pre-match preparation. Result: AFC Emley 0 - 3 Nostell MW Team: Green, Dennis, Clarke, Eastwood, Hazelden, Hirst, Day, James (Mann 67), Laud (Prasher 45), Manousios, Wood. Next Saturday AFC Emley travel to Worsbrough Bridge for an NCE League match. Kick off is at 3-00pm |

Staveley
MW v AFC Emley NCEL Division One Examiner report Scott is too hot for Emley Feb 27 2007 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner AFC EMLEY had a bad day at the office when they were stung 7-2 at Staveley Miners Welfare. It was a 15th Northern Counties East League Division I defeat for Ray Dennis and Nicky Bramald's side and their heaviest of the campaign so far. A first-half 21-minute hat trick from Marc Scott saw them take control of the game before Allan Laud got Emley off the mark from the penalty spot. However, Scott added his fourth just before the interval to give them an unassailable 4-1 interval lead. Four goals then came in the final 11 minutes as Liam O'Brien and Anthony Shaw (2) completed the rout for Staveley while Adam Day also found the net for the visitors. Emley
have now suffered back-to-back defeats and the dip in form leaves the side
12th in the 17-team section with 27 points from 24 games. But they will be aiming to halt the slump on Saturday when they host Nostell MW at the Welfare Ground (3.00).
A first half wonder show
from midfielder Marc Scott in which he netted four times in the opening 38
minutes set Staveley on their way to an astounding victory. Two decisive
headers and a 25-yard shot from Scott put Welfare 3-0 up by the 24th
minute, before a disputed penalty was tucked away by Laud on the half-hour
to give Emley hope. Hope became no-hope as Scott got down low to nod Cam's
cross beyond the stricken visiting keeper several minutes before the
interval. Liam O'Brien grabbed
Staveley's fifth on 79 minutes, just two minutes after taking the field,
when he took advantage of a spilled ball by the Emley keeper. Then came
three goals in as many minutes as Anthony Shaw netted twice, either side
of a shot from Day which dropped under the Staveley crossbar in the 83rd
minute. Shaw's second came after a Cam penalty had been saved and the
Welfare striker nipped in to score Staveley's seventh. Fact: The last time we scored seven? 12th March 1994, a 7-0 victory at Rossington in the Central Midlands League. Fact: Today's win was the biggest since we won 6-0 at Harrogate Railway to win the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 1998. Now isn't that an astonishing fact....are you reading this Parkgate? The victory takes Staveley up one place to 10th in the table. |

EMLEY v – Lincoln Moorlands NCEL Division One A.F.C. Emley had to comeback from a goal deficit on two occasions to earn a hard fought point against Lincoln Moorlands at the Welfare Ground. Lincoln boasted one of the best away records in the division and Emley worked hard to combat a good footballing side and the loss of ‘keeper Green in the 70th minute. Ryan Dennis, son of former goalkeeping legend Ray, went in goal when Green went off with an injured hand late in the second half. Ray’s legacy was to follow with Ryan as he made several fine saves and catches to deny Moorlands and even set many attacks off with fine throws. The first half was full of good flowing football from both sides but neither side could create many, if any, clear shooting chances. Moorlands manager, Rick Rawson, was proving to be a handful to the home defence, drawing a number of fouls. It was Rawson who opened the scoring in the 43rd minutes when he beat Green down to his left. However, Moorlands joy was short lived when a minute later Washington picked up a ball in the visitors area and coolly slotted home to make the scores level at half time. HT 1 – 1 The second period began at the same pace as the first and it was Moorlands who went in front again when Hodds shot home after a corner from the right was not cleared by the home defence. Then with 20 minutes remaining Green was injured and it looked as though Moorlands may go on to complete a victory. However, Emley and in particular Dennis had other ideas. Emley went in search of an equaliser and with two minutes of normal time left Wood broke down the left then cut inside a defender to square a ball into the path of Hazelden who shot passed the despairing Herrick. There were 8 minutes of added time to play and in that time chances were made but neither side could come up with a winner. Result: AFC Emley 2 - 2 Lincoln Moorlands AFC Emley: Green (Carmody 75), Dennis, Wallace, Robinson, Hazelden, Taylor, Washington, James, Laud, Manousios (Mann 70), Clarke (Wood 60) AFC Emley are at home on Wednesday 21st February against second in the table Winterton Rangers. Kick Off is at 7.45pm Report
from Lincoln Moorlands website
At one of the best grounds
in the Division Moorlands contrived to give away 2 points in an
entertaining game that was dominated by the visiting side. These sort of
results are frustrating as having had AFC Emley on the rack for much of
the game by playing good football and with plenty of attacking
ideas it was the inability to keep out the home forwards that was to
prove costly. However Moorlands Assistant Manager Darren Dye had a
justifiable claim that defender Paul Hodds was fouled in the lead up to
the Emley second goal, nevertheless it was sloppy play with a poorly
taken throw-in that led up to the incident in the first place. With
enforced changes Manager Rick Ranshaw started and Rob Lund replaced the
injured Ben Barnard at right back
From the kick-off Moorlands
decided to attack in front of a large crowd, with Coupland narrowly
caught offside. mason's cross was then dropped by keeper Green but no
attacker was on hand to punish the error. Emley did win a corner and
Herrick punched clear under pressure, but Lund then went on the attack
and a freekick from 30 yards out by the fullback flew just wide.. mason
broke down the right and flicked onto Robinson but his shot was closed
down by the defence with Moorlands driving forward in search of the
first goal. Emley managed to break away and Lund made a great clearance
off the line from Washington, but more pressure had Ranshaw's effort
narrowly over the bar. defender Porter then had the chance to move
forward and from his astute pass Coupland drove low and hard forcing
Green into a good save.
However on 43 minutes ranshaw
opened the scoring as the striker laid the ball off to Saunders and his
pinpoint cross was headed home by Ranshaw at the far post. barely a
minute later came the equalizer with a mistake by Hallcro letting in
Washington to slot home easily
H/T AFC Emley
1 Moorlands 1
On the resumption Moorlands
should have taken an immediate lead but Mason missed his header when
well placed but on 51 minutes a corner from the left by Porter was
headed home by Hodds at the far post. It was all the visitors now and
Fleming was adjudged to be offside just as he netted. Now trying to kill
the game off Coupland had a thunderous shot blocked in front of goal and
from the deflection Robinson should have done better from 6 yards than
allow a defender to get in the way. Robinson then headed over from close
range as the chances went begging and Emley not being able to mount a
serious attack. Another quick freekick had Fleming challenge the keeper
and green was forced off the pitch to be replaced in goal by Dennis Ryan
with 20 minutes remaining. Ranshaw had the substitute keeper diving low
to palm his effort away and Saunders had the keeper make a superb save
from his cross shot. Another greet centre from Saunders had Ranshaw miss
his header when seemed certain to score with Emley having their backs to
the wall. But with time running out a rather undeserved equalizer
arrived on 88 minutes. Hodds appeared to be fouled by Carmody who took
the ball on and crossed low for defender Hazelden to slide the ball home
for a cruel denial of all three points. Nevertheless Darren Dye was
pleased with the football and saw heart in the side that might well
carry them through next Wednesdays Wilkinson Sword Semi- Final

marshalled from goal by
stand in skipper Jamie Green. In fact it was man-of the
Report from Parkgate website In the first twenty minutes play was end to end, and in the 21st minute Emley should have taken the lead through Alan Laud, but brave goalkeeping by Darren Bonnington who scooped the ball up from his feet to prevent him scoring. Neither side were able to score after good keeping from both goalkeepers. Parkgate started the second half piling the pressure on Emley but good defending kept the Steelmen out. In the 59th minute Jamie Green saved a shot from Adam Fretwell. In the 62nd minute Parkgate made a double substitution with Brian Cusworth and Kyle Nix being replaced by David Taylor and Caine Cheetham. In the 68th minute a Parkgate defender missed a ball in the box and Wayne James latched onto it and put Emley ahead. In the 70th minute Parkgate made their final substitution with Andy Battersby replacing Mark Cooper. In the 72nd minute Matt Outram was brought down in the box, up stepped regular penalty taker Adam Fretwell who skied his shot over the bar. In the 86th minute Andy Battersby had a shot on goal, which hit the upright. In the 90th minute Adam Fretwell made amends and fired a shot past Jamie Green to secure a point for the Steelmen. Dinnington Town v AFC Emley NCEL - Division One After their magnificent 3-0 win against second in the table South Normanton last week AFC were bound to be full of confidence going into this game against Dinnington Town. Especially as they had beaten them 3-2 in another recent encounter. Emley started the stronger and probably shaded the first 5 minutes but it was not long before Dinnington Town soon started to take control. Dinnington took the lead on 9 minutes when Ben Rosser made a forceful run into the box to be brought down by Joe Washington. The resulting penalty kick was given to Liam Cartledge who stepped up to make no mistake to put Dinnington into the lead. On 23 minutes Needham started the move which brought Dinnington their second goal, by passing to Mirfin whose left wing cross found Rob Ward unmarked who quickly controlled the ball to lob over the goal keeper into the net. Result: Dinnington Town 3 - 0 AFC Emley Report from Dinnington web site
After their 6 - 0 win at
Yorkshire Amateur Town were full of confidence going into this game
against fellow newcomers AFC Emley. This was the return game as the
first encounter finished with a 3-2 win to Emley a game Town
thought they should have at least a point from.
Emley started strong and
shaded the first 5 minutes but Town didn't panic and soon started
to take control. On 7 minutes the chances started to come when Liam Cartledge
got closed down when he was away free on goal, the Emley defence managed
to clear the ball. Town took the deserved lead on 9 minutes when Ben
Rosser made a forceful run into the box to be brought down, the
resulting penalty kick was given to Liam Cartledge and after some
playmanship by Green the Emley keeper Cartledge stepped up to make no
mistake to put Town into the lead and take a heavy weight from his
shoulders by scoring his 200th goal. The goal gave Town the appetite to
play some of the best football the supporters have ever witnessed. Greg
Mason, Simon Mirfin and Mark Needham made it difficult for the Emley
midfield and broke down every move and with slick passing tied them in
knots. So much so on 23 minutes Needham started the move by passing to
Mirfin whose left wing cross found Rob Ward unmarked who quickly
controlled the ball to lob over the goal keeper into the net. Town never
look back after the 2nd goal and it was Rob Ward who was unlucky
not to increase the lead with four further chances, he had a shot
blocked, a Needham free kick came to Ward his shot saved by the keeper,
another just over and the last to hit the bar. HT 2-0
Within 5 minutes of the
start of the second half Town scored their 3rd when a smothered Rob Ward
shot came to ''sniffer'' Cartledge to fire in the bottom left hand
corner. Cartledge should have finished of a great performance by scoring
a hat trick on 73 minutes when Needham and Cartledge had ran away from
the defence, Needham took the defender away and passed to Cartledge but
he was closed down and Emley cleared the ball. On 79 minutes Scott Rogers
replaced Cartledge and within a minute was brought down by Green the
keeper in the area. The referee had no choice but to send him off and
award a penalty kick to Town. Ryan Dennis went in goal and was soon the
hero when he saved Rob Wards penalty kick. After Emley's early promise
they failed to get passed Town's defence, where again Sykes, Dearns,
Haigh and Thompson were outstanding and Phil Rhodes in goal had
little to do. Town looked back at the chances missed but were
satisfied with the final 3-0 scoreline.

EMLEY v South Normanton Athletic NCEL Division One A superb victory against high flying South Normanton was soured by disgraceful scenes from the visiting players near the end of this NCE league Division One fixture. The match was played in very windy conditions which blew straight down the ground and was in the visitors favour in the first half. South Normanton had, expectedly, most of the play in the half but Emley still managed to trouble the visitors with breaks down the left involving Wallace and debutant Lackie. It was on one such break that Emley went ahead right on the stroke of half time. Wallace broke and after an interchange of passes squared the ball to Day whose first time left foot shot beat the unsighted Whalin in the visitor's goal. This was the first goal scored against South Normanton in 585 minutes of play In the second period it was rolls reversed. Emley having all the play and the visitor's content to soak up the pressure and not putting any pressure, of their own, on the home defence. In the 84th minute, Emley went further ahead, when a ball out of defence was flicked on into the path of James who's first time shot beat Whalin inside his right post. In the 87th minute Emley sealed all three points when Laud was brought down by Whalin as he tried to go round him. Whalin was only cautioned and Laud himself took the penalty to make it 3 - 0. Unfortunately in the remaining minutes Johnson was straight red carded for an awful two footed challenge on Laud and then the players from both sides got involved in a melee which spilled into both dugouts and spectator areas. The referee took advice from his assistants and cautioned both Whalin and Pinnock who had previously both been cautioned and therefore sent both players off. Result: AFC Emley 3 - 0 South Normanton Athletic AFC Emley: Green, Robinson, Wallace, Pinnock, Hazelden, Taylor, Washington, James, Laud, Lackie, Day (Manousios 72). EMLEY 2 - 1 Gedling Town
NCEL – Div One Sweet Revenge for AFC AFC Emley exacted sweet revenge for the early season mauling they took at Gedling Town. It shows just how far AFC have come since they played their first game in the Northern Counties East League in August One of the few games played in Division One this match proved an exciting encounter with both sides having to cope with very windy conditions but played on a near perfect playing surface. The wind favoured AFC in the first half but for all their endeavour it was the visitors who took the lead on 19 minutes when Baum nipped in at the far post after the home defence were caught short-handed. However, AFC continued to press forward and James could have bagged a hat-trick had he taken advantage of at least three one-on-one chances but he missed every one and it was thought that the home team would rue those misses later in the game. On 36 minutes AFC drew level when Washington beat three players down the left and cut inside the area and was unceremoniously upended. Laud made no mistake from the spot, sending the visiting 'keeper the wrong way. The half ended level with James again missing another golden chance. In the second period with AFC playing against the strong wind they put together some of the best moves seen for some time with Wallace and debutant Brown causing problems down the left hand side. The visitors were content to play a long ball game causing little problems to the home defence. On 66 minutes AFC took the lead. Another run down the left from Wallace and a cross found Quinn whose first time shot was still rising as it hit the roof of the net. From then on, apart from one occasion, it was AFC who dominated looking for another goal to seal this sweet victory. Result: AFC Emley 2 - 1 Gedling Town AFC Emley, Green, Robinson, Wallace, Pinnock, Hazelden, Taylor, Washington, James (Bucknall 88), Laud (Manousios 81), Quinn, Brown (Day 84) AFC's next match is now next Saturday 27th January against South Normanton Athletic. Wednesday's match vs Winterton Rangers has been postponed and will now be played on 21st February. |

Amateur v AFC EMLEY NCEL – Div One 10 Man Emley lose at Amateur Reduced to 10 men after only 9 minutes AFC fought a courageous but losing battle against Yorkshire Amateur at Bracken Edge. A free-kick taken from the right on 9 minutes was not properly cleared and the resulting shot was handled on the line by Hazelden. Having stopped a clear goal bound shot the Referee had no option but to dismiss the Emley central defender. Ashley Beck scored the penalty and from then on in the first half Emley battled but on a very heavy and grossly uneven surface their good build up play was let down in the final third when not one shot on target was recorded. Of note, however, Green in the Emley goal made a tremendous double save on 38 minutes to deny the home team a second goal. The start of the second half was again all Emley play, but, with no end result, they suffered a sucker punch in the 60th minute. A long ball down the left was crossed and headed out of defence straight into the path of Richard Britten whose first time shot beat Green down to his right. To be truthful Amateur could have scored on at least two other occasions but woefully finishing in front of goal kept Emley interested right up to the final whistle. But as in the first half the only thing missing was a shot. The only efforts in the second half coming from a Laud shot and a Quinn free-kick. Emley v Rossington Main NCELeague One Win Overshadowed by Loss of President In front of 141 shocked supporters at The Welfare Ground today, Secretary Richard Poulain announced the untimely death of AFC Emley President Adrian Wright. A minutes sign of remembrance was held prior to the game. Adrian had been taken ill in early October and never left hospital. He leaves a Wife, Tricia, a Daughter Fiona, and 3 sons Nick, Simon & Kevin AFC Emley needed these 3 points against Rossington Main to put a gap between themselves and the pack at the foot of the NCE League table. In bright sunshine Emley put pressure on their visitors who had made several changes following the departure of their manager recently. James went close on 6minutes, hitting the post from an acute angle. Laud too and King had efforts saved by the visiting keeper who managed to keep a clean sheet up to the break. However, within three minutes of the restart Emley were in front when James rounded the keeper and shot only to see his effort saved on the line but when the ball came back he was upended and Laud put the resulting penalty beyond Griffiths. More pressure followed and substitute Manousios slotted home on 74 minutes following a great cross from King. Laud scored his second and AFCs third on 82 minutes with a tremendous shot from the edge of the area. Rossington scored a consolation goal in stoppage time when Griffiths hit a shot from a fine angle which looped over Greens head in the home goal. Emley v Pontefract Collieries NCEL Div One Jeckal and Hyde Performance from AFC Emley AFC Emley provided a theatrical performance at the Welfare Ground for the hardy supporters who braved the weather on this miserable afternoon. For the first 38 minutes Emley played some of the best football seen at the Welfare Ground for some time. Racing into two goal lead with strikes after 11 minutes from James and 26 minutes from Ryan one might have been forgiven that this was going to be a rout but the visitors had other ideas. Once former Emley player Shaw had given Pontefract hope with a deceiving free kick on 38 minutes the home team inexplicably allowed their opponents to play the better football. In the second half the visitors were far the better footballing side leaving the home team wondering what had been in their tea at half time. Goals from Coupe (C) and Duckworth on 65 and 68 minutes saw the visitors into a lead which frankly they never looked like losing. Result: AFC Emley 2 - 3 Pontefract Collieries Surely a better performance must be expected when they face Rossington Main next Saturday at the Welfare Ground. K.O. 3.00pm From Pontefract website This was Colls first visit back to the Welfare Ground to face the re-incarnated AFC Emley, newcomers to the NCE this season. The exposed venue in the Pennines is famed for its inclement weather, but, after leaving Pomfret in bright sunshine, on arrival it was only cold and wet with a biting wind – not bad for the time of year! There were a few changes in the Ponte line-up, with Andy Smith and Jon Forsyth switching positions on the right side, and Joe Rossiter making a rare appearance in the centre of defence in place of Paul Mullooly. Target man John Forrest was missing up front, with Kevin Duckworth returning to partner Chris Coupe in a pacey but lightweight-looking attacking force. Glen Shelley was still absent in midfield. Paul Eastwood, having transferred to Emley earlier in the season, was in action against his old team-mates. Kevin Duckworth got in an early strike to test Emley’s keeper, and the same player was also seen in good combination with Mike Rossiter and Chris Coupe in another promising move. But it was Emley who might have opened their account when Karl Slater lost his footing at the back to allow Kieran Ryan through the defences to crash a shot just over the crossbar from 20 yards. In another move down Emley’s right, Wayne James got past Joe Rossiter and put in a perfect pass for ex-Coll Paul Eastwood, who looked almost certain to score until a great stop by Matt Herschell-Smith prevented him. The danger was not cleared, however, and another move down the right saw Wayne James get through again to slot home low past the keeper for 1-0 after just 11 minutes. The lively Chris Coupe got in a shot on the turn for Ponte in response, but it was a simple save for keeper Jamie Green. Even so, he partially spilled the effort, as he did again seconds later with a fairly innocuous Duckworth curler. Chris Shaw hit a “grasscutter” free-kick to again test him, but he held this on the line. Another Shaw free-kick effort was also cleared off the line at the far post, but Ponte could not find the breakthrough as they tried to follow up these scares for the home defence. Then, somewhat against the run of play, Collieries conceded a second on 26 minutes. Wayne James carved himself a way through the middle and into the box, before going down, perhaps looking for a penalty, but it was irrelevant as the ball ended up with Kieran Ryan, who gratefully found the net. Kieran Ryan got another effort on target, before Colls hit back with a somewhat fortunate reply. Another Chris Shaw free-kick, wide out on the left, was floated in towards the far post. It evaded all who attempted to make a connection, took one high bounce and flew past a deceived goalkeeper, to nestle in the back of the net. With just 7 minutes to go to half-time, Pontefract had grabbed a life line in a game that was in danger of drifting away. If the substantial Collieries following had been hoping for a distinct change round in the second half, they got it. Ponte had been somewhat static in key areas of the field in the first half, in particular central midfield, clearly missing the running and persistence of Shelley, and lacking the ability to keep a foot on the ball and find their own players with a simple pass. Joe Rossiter, perhaps wasted in central defence, showed his skills with a run all the way from the back to the edge of Emley area, before being stopped, a feat he had also nearly pulled off before the break. Chris Shaw, sensing some uncertainty between the sticks for Emley, hit another wide free-kick onto the crossbar. And after 65 minutes, Colls found the equaliser. An Andy Smith run down the right saw the player beat his man and put over an inch-prefect pass behind the defence for the timely run of Kevin Duckworth. His effort was smothered by keeper Green but only as far as Chris Coupe who was delighted to finish things off. Three minutes later and the goal of the game from Kevin Duckworth saw Pontefract claim the three points. He picked up the ball from just inside the opponent’s half and showed his pace and deception in carving a way straight towards goal, slipping the ball between one defender’s legs and then between the keeper’s. It was a goal worthy of winning any game, and the whole side showed their delight with the celebrations. But there was still work to be done. Emley immediately made a treble substitution with obvious ambitions of their own. And down came the torrential rain, although the surface still held up well. From a corner, Joe Rossiter put a header back across for brother Mike to hit a close effort on the turn. With Emley pushing forward at every opportunity, they were often stretched at the back, and Duckworth was still threatening to get away, being the victim of a couple of very tight offside decisions. A back pass to Emley’s keeper was intercepted on the by-line and both Duckworth and Chris Coupe went close in the scramble that followed. Emley had one bullet header cleared off the line by a Colls defender, and Chris Coupe showed some quick skills as he rounded a defender to get into the penalty area. In the closing minutes, an Emley free-kick was saved by Matt Herschell-Smith, with the aid of a defender to clear for a corner, but Colls got nearest to any further score when Duckworth got away but lost his footing as he attempted to beat the last defender with the goal unguarded, and he was forced wide. Overall, not Pontefract’s best display of the season, but this time around there are numerous good performances to pick from! Whilst they lacked some control and stealth in midfield, they still showed enough character and no little skill to come back from two down to deservedly take three points and climb a place in the table to ninth spot. Pontefract were due a blank Saturday next week before travelling midweek to Lincoln on the 10th January. But a friendly fixture against Ossett Town will fill the gap at Skinner Lane with a 2pm kick-off, against the Unibond Premier Division side who have intentions of sending their first team who are otherwise also without a game. Emley v Teversal NCELeague Div One From Teversal website AFC EMLEY - Green, Mann, Robinson, Pinnock, Hazelden, Taylor T., Washington (Prasher 29), Manousios (Ryan 70), Laud, Flynn, Eastwood (Dennis 90+) Subs Not Used - All Used. TEVERSAL - Wilson, Hudson (Atkinson 82), Goodacre, Courtie, Parkes, Rhodes, Walker, Hall, Orton, Atkins, Thorpe. Subs Not Used - Clarke, Taylor F. REFEREE - Mr S C Mercer of Wakefield. MAN OF MATCH - AFC Emley - John Flynn, Teversal - Mark Parkes ATTENDANCE - 128. "Tevie Beaten, But Not Down" Teversal have played worse this season and won, but major decisions turned the advantage in Emley's favour and credit to the home side for dipping their bread when handed their festive gifts early. It was Emley who started the brightest with Laud and Manousios using their pace to good effect when attacking down the flanks. But the Tevie boys rode the waves and defended well to give a foundation to take control of the game and play the better football. On 12 minutes, Teversal had what looked a stone wall penalty claim turned down when Orton's superbly weighted pass set Hall clear only to be hacked down from behind by Robinson's clumsy challenge, with one of his team mates making a sandwich of the Teversal striker, but Mr Mercer waved play on. This certainly let the visitors know what they was up against, but they was undeterred and an excellent move saw Thorpe produce the final pass to Walker who forced Green into making an excellent save at his near post. Green was called on again when yet another quality move exposed the home defence, with Rhodes effort seeing the home custodian parrying his effort against the bar. Emley created only two efforts of note in the first period, firstly Laud fired a well struck effort across the Teversal goal with Wilson equal to the effort when tipping round the post and then on the stroke of half time Atkins cross field pass was intercepted by Taylor who released Flynn who draw his effort wide of the mark. The second period saw the visitor maintaining their hold on the game, but fait was against them. On 52 minutes what looked a fair goal was ruled out for offside, Orton received the ball out wide and left Robinson on the floor before crossing only for Hazelden to miss kick his clearance with Walker seizing to fire the ball home, so the visitors thought, but no a flag was raised for offside. If that effort was hard to take for the Tevie Boys, what followed on 55 minutes was totally unacceptable, Walker crossed to Thorpe who smashed a volley in off the post, Green in the home goal dived as the ball passed behind him to hook the ball onto the inside of the opposite post with Pinnock then firing a clearance from behind his goalkeeper, the outcome, yes, you’ve guessed it - No goal. Inspired by this Emley must have felt immortal, and went close only 2 minutes later when Flynn headed against the bar. On 74 minutes the home side scored their first, when a two footed lunge into Wilson saw the ball run clear and knocked out for a corner. The corner was delayed whilst Wilson received treatment for bruised ribs and forearm, so when the Teversal Keeper went to collect the corner kick with Flynn again all over him, Wilson spilt the ball with Pinnock firing home in the ensuing scramble to give Emley an early Christmas box. Teversal went back at Emley and when Thorpe was clean through on goal on 80 minutes, it took yet another challenge from behind to put the Tevie marksman off, again no spot kick awarded even though the Emley defender didn't get anything on the ball. The visitor's were now throwing caution to the wind to get something out of a game that should have been in the bag. But any hopes they had were killed off in the 83rd minute when Flynn scored a quality individual effort when cutting in from the Emley left before firing into the bottom corner to make it 2-0. Dick Turpin, the highway robber, must come from Emley after steeling the points in this game, and it was sealed in added on time when Laud seized on Wilson's poor clearance to fire straight back over the Tevie Keeper from all of 40 yards. So in true pantomime, there were the baddies and credit to the Teversal players for showing true discipline and not getting drawn into the farce the baddies caused. Result: AFC Emley 3 - 0 Teversal |

Winterton
Rangers 4 - 2 AFC Emley NCE League One From Winterton website For
the visit of fourth from bottom AFC Emley, Winterton had to make a few
changes to the side that were narrowly beaten at Glasshoughton in the vase
last weekend. The sad retirement of Billy Green and the working James
Atkinson left only Captain Steve Robinson from last week, recent signing
Gavin Cooper started at centre back, Craig Sharpless returned to the side
at right back and Mark Whitehouse filled in the left back roll. Winterton
continued to look most likely to score although the Emley big number ten
Flynn and ex-Ranger Alan Laud looked very capable. On
17mins. Andy Holt fed Danny Clarke to race to the by-line but his cross
across the face didn’t have anyone near enough to get on the end. The
game didn’t really have a great deal of spark, Rangers were unhappy with
a few challenges from an Emley side keen to go to ground in the tackle,
Catton and Whitehouse in particular felt the bite of Pinnock and Wallace. On
25mins a hopeful punt up front fell between Emley centre back and keeper
just inside the box, Andy Holt showing strength got between both to nick
the ball only to rugby tackled to the ground by the keeper Jamie Green.
The penalty was awarded but referee Mr Barraclough from Emley
came back at Rangers winning a few corners around the half hour mark that
Simpson came out to deal with against probably the tallest team to visit Greg Archer nearly grabbed another for Rangers on 42mins. When he stole into the box before heading a cross from the left to what looked destined for the top corner but keeper Green made a superb full stretch save to tip it round the post. HALF-TIME
2-1 The
controversy continued at the start of the second, a through ball had
Clarke looking to cross on 47mins but the ball hit the arm of a defender,
not the most convincing of penalty shouts but his arm was outstretched if
not deliberately towards the ball and decisions have been given for
similar. A
minute later Clarke pulled the ball back to Whitehouse who crossed to
Catton at the far post but his header was easy for the keeper. Wintertons
good start to the half paid off on 50mins, Whitehouse and Ricardo linked
for Whitehouse to cross to the near post where Rob
Northen appeared to flick the ball over the keeper. 3-1
Four minutes later another
cross from the left to Holt who had come off his sick bed to play, headed
goalwards only for the defender Pinnock to head clear. On
60 mins. Emley pumped in a free kick from deep towards the far post,
Robinson cleared for a corner, Rangers looked a bit suspect as they
conceded a couple more corners before Ricardo blocked another shot and
then cleared upfield. Nine
minutes later Rangers won a free kick on the right that was quickly taken
to Catton who raced goalwards jinxing past a couple of tackles before
Wallace again brought down the Winterton midfielder in the box but escaped
a card. Dave Ricardo stepped up to take the penalty stumbled in his run up
but still placed the ball in the corner only for Green to fantastically
palm away, and then win a free kick as he beat Ricardo to the ball. Straight
away Green pumped the ball up field, it caught Rangers cold and Alan Laud
was calmness itself as he took a touch before firing across the goal and
in. 3-2 Winterton then again
had to defend a string of corners before entering the last ten minutes. Steve
Underwood replaced Dave Ricardo and had a shot blocked away on 80mins from
another controlled header back by Andy Holt. But the best was saved for last when Greg Archer picked up the ball around 40yards out stepped up a few before thundering a shot that rattled the underside of the bar and in for a superb Rangers fourth. 4-2 As the game came to a close Andy Holt nearly grabbed another his performance deserved but the keeper parried away. FINAL
SCORE 4-2 Anther
good result in a performance that had spells of very good play between
periods of hard graft. Winterton scored four but for the performance of
Green in the Emley goal who should have seen red in the first half it
could have been more. |

Hall
Road Rangers 1 - 0 AFC EMLEY NCE League One Scorer: Wallace 85 mins (og) Report from Hall Road Rangers Programme Hall Road moved up to ninth place following a hard-fought match at Dene Park on Saturday. Manager Steve Richards was pleased with his side’s determination: “This was a gritty performance and we just deserved to edge it. Shaun Baker has strengthened the defence and for the first time this season, we had a bit of luck with the goal”. With top scorer Rhys Pindar back from suspension and Mark Dale making way for Ricky Foster in defence, Rangers were soon on the attack. Jamie Barnwell skilfully made space for himself to have a clear shot at goal but hammered the ball high over the bar and Pindar raced clear but slipped his shot inches wide of the post. Paul Farley conceded a free-kick on the edge of the area and was relieved to see Eastwood blast the kick straight at Paul Sharp. Prasher caused problems for Rangers as the midfields battled for supremacy and Hazelden and James both came close to scoring for the visitors. Farley had a powerful free-kick well saved by Green just before the break and the first-half ended goalless. On 50 minutes Eastwood had a fine shot well tipped over by Paul Sharp and tempers became frayed after Adam Walker’s challenge on goalkeeper Green. Walker and Pindar were booked together with Emley skipper Hirst. With 20 minutes remaining, Darren Wilson and Alex Bishop replaced Leon Rudd and Glenn Kaveney and Rangers piled on the pressure. Emley
twice cleared headers off the line from corners and Wilson was unlucky
with a header against the bar from Walker’s free-kick. Barnwell made two
dangerous breaks down the left and the pressure eventually paid off on 85
minutes when Emley full-back Wallace unluckily smashed an attempted
clearance into his own net under pressure from Pindar to give Rangers the
points. |

Tadcaster
Albion 0 - 2 AFC EMLEY NCE League One
AFC Emley made it three wins
on the spin as they took apart Tadcaster Albion who were previously
unbeaten at home.
Having dominated the opening
quarter of the game AFC went ahead in the 26th minute when Paul Eastwood sent a delightful
chip over the advancing home keeper. AFC continued to keeper the home
team very much at bay and deserved their half time lead.
Shortly after the restart
AFC went further ahead after 50 minutes when Nathan Hazelden headed in from a corner.
The scoreline certainly did
not do the visitors any justice and should have been more.
Man of the match Allan Laud
had another splendid game leading the line well.
AFC are away again next
Saturday 9th December in a rearranged game against Hall Road Rangers.

AFC EMLEY 3 - 2 Dinnington Town NCE League One Sub
In
one of only two surviving games played in the NCE League due to the
weather, AFC turned in commanding performance to win against Dinnington
who themselves were in their first season in the League, having moved up
from the Central Midlands League at the end of last season. The
first half was very even but AFC certainly probed the visitors defence
however the half ended scoreless. The
second half started with a goal within a minute. However, it was the
visitors who had the luck with AFC’s
next match is next Saturday 2nd December when they visit
Tadcaster Albion. Kick off is
AFC Emley 3 - 2
Dinnington Town
Town had to make changes to
the team that had the good win against Worsbrough Bridge due to injury
in came Ben Dearns, Martin Wade and Matt Haigh.
With gale force winds and
rain forecast an early pitch inspection was called and surprisingly
this game was the only one played in division one. Town held out well in
the first half with the wind against them and they produced two good
chances falling to Liam Cartledge on 20 minutes who shot over and
on 35 minutes when Greg Mason forced a good save by Emley goalkeeper Jamie
Green. Emley did have one chance from a freekick but Luke Hands did well
to smother. Town's Matt Haigh was hit hard three times in a 10 minute
spell by Emley's Washington but surprisingly each time the reff played
on without attempting to clean up the game. HT 0-0
Town with the wind behind
them were hoping to force the advantage and they did within 3 minutes of
the start when Gavin Mason fired in a fierce cross from the left the
ball hit Emley's Paul Robinson and into the net. Town were cruising with
Emley having little to trouble Town but in a 15 minute spell Town's
hopes of a win were dashed. A penalty was awarded to Emley on 65 minutes
when in the referee's view Joe Ntiedu had ''rugby tackled'' an
Emley player then to rub in the salt he booked Andy Sykes and Ntiedu for
questioning his decision. Allan Laud scored the penalty. The penalty did
have effect on Town's players and in quick succession Emley scored two
further goals Paul Quinn 75 mins and Dave Wallace 82 mins. The
referee tried to put right his mistake by awarding a late penalty to
Town for allegedly pushing in the box which Cartledge scored (90mins)
but it came too late for Town to get back. FT 2-3
One bright spot for Town
they have found three good prospects in Matthew Haigh, Steve Lunt and
Gavin Mason they should figure prominently in the second half of the
season.

Borrowash Victoria 0 - 2 AFC Emley NCE League One
Following their superb
midweek performance, against Frickley, AFC went to Borrowash full
of confidence. The performance which followed was just as superb.
AFC put pressure on their
opponents right from the first whistle. Taylor, in midfield, was busy
dictating the pace and held the play up well to give his colleques time
to find spaces, of which their were plenty.
The first half ended with
AFC well in command and it was almost inevitable that shortly after the
restart AFC got the goal they richly deserved. Man of the match Laud was
clumsily bundled over in the visitor's penalty area and he subsequently
placed the resulting penalty to the goalkeepers left. This gave AFC a
big lift and for the rest of the half they peppered the home team's
goal. The home team were reduced to ten men shortly before the end and
with numerical advantage counting put the match beyond doubt when
substitute Adrian Smith slotted home following good work between Quinn and
Prasher.
This was without doubt a
good team performance with the defence standing firm throughout.

Emley 0 - 1 Frickley Athletic Sheffield Senior Cup Rd.2
A magnificent performance
of grit and teamwork say AFC lose by a solitary goal against their
Unibond League opponents Frickley Athletic.
The only goal of the game
came from Ward, shortly after half time. AFC should have had an
equaliser when James was sent clean through with only the goalkeeper
to beat but he was uncerimoniuosly upended by the Frickley 'keeper,
who was subsequently sent off. The resulting free kick came to nothing
and with it went AFC's last chance.
Debutant Terry Taylor was
also dismissed for receiving two yellow cards.
From Frickley website Wednesday 8th November - AFC Emley 0-1 Frickley Athletic A Goal from Mark Ward three minutes after half time earned the Blues a 1-0 win at AFC Emley in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup this evening. The win came at a cost with Jon Hood being sent off after 65 minutes for bringing down Wayne James outside the box. Billy Heath made a few changes to the side by moving Danny Moore to right back, bringing Adam Pollock in at left back and Mark Crossfield onto the right hand side of midfield whilst Steve Kennedy returned to the side after injury and Martin Thacker was available to make his first appearance in midfield alongside Calum Selby. Frickley started the game positively with Rob Pell having a lob from just inside the box well blocked by the Emley 'keeper after 3 minutes. However, Emley went close themselves 7 minutes later but Kitson Gayle side-footed his effort wide of the right hand post. Thacker then saw his free-kick half cleared as far as Selby some 25 yards out but his first time volley was punched away by Graham McLachlan. The second half began in much the same way with Pell seeing his close range shot blocked at the foot of the post following a corner on 46 minutes but 2 minutes later Frickley took the lead. MARK WARD found himself clean through with only McLachlan to beat and he made no mistake. Pell then flashed a 25 yard drive just wide before a swift Frickley move saw Paul Rickers have a low 20 yard shot pushed around the post. The game changed somewhat on 65 minutes when Kennedy's short back pass let in Wayne James who was brought down by the out-rushing Hood some 30 yards out. Hood was promptly sent off with Ward taking over in goal. Twelve minutes later Emley were also reduced to ten men when Terry Taylor was sent off for a second bookable offence.AFC Emley: McLachlan, Robinson, Hazleden, Quinn, Taylor, Hirst, Washington, Laud, Gayle, James, Eastwood Subs: Dennis, Mann, Bramald Frickley: Hood,

Nostell
M. W. 4 - 2 AFC Emley NCE League One AFC
Emley battle for pride. Despite
being reduced to nine men for most of the game against league high
flyers Nostell, AFC Emley showed character, passion, and ability in this
loss. As
early as the fourth minute centre forward JP Flynn was sent off
after falling for the antics of a seasoned centre back. The referee
responding rightly, although only seeing the retaliation. Nostell
went 2-0 up after only 15 mins. The travelling Emley fans feared
the worst, however, Emley stuck to their task and Paul Eastwood went
close from a 22yd free kick. On
35mins. Richard Hirst took a free kick from his own area it was headed
on by Chris Prasher to promising new striker Wayne James who
carried the ball forward and shot past the advancing Nostell keeper. Emley
continued to be the equal of the opposition but were then reduced to
nine men on 42mins. when Ryan Dennis brought down Nostell's centre
forward and was deemed the last man. The
half time whistle came as a welcome relief. As
would be expected Emley were under the cosh in the second half but
continued to defend with resilience. Despite
all efforts, they went 4-1 down after 65mins. However
on 87mins. under 19 striker Kieran Ryan put away an
excellent strike to finish the game 4-2. Although
unfair to single out performances Jo Washington and Paul Quinn at the
centre of midfield, and man of the match Nathan Hazelden with his
partner at centre back Richard Hirst were outstanding, particularly in
the second half. Although
holding up the rest of the league, it would seem it only a matter of
time before the team start to produce winning results. Nine-man AFC slip to bottom of the table Oct 24 2006 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner AFC
EMLEY slipped to the bottom of the Northern Counties East League Division
I losing 4-2 at high-flying Nostell Miners Welfare. As early as the fourth minute striker Flynn was dismissed after falling for the antics of a seasoned centre-back and the referee responded correctly, despite seeing only the retaliation. Goals by Oli Johnson on 12 minutes and Dave Watts on 17 gave Nostell a 2-0 lead with the travelling Emley contingent fearing the worst. But Emley stuck gamely to their task and Paul Eastwood went close with a 22-yard free-kick. On 36 minutes Richard Hirst launched a free-kick from his own area which was headed on by Chris Prasher to promising new striker Wayne James who carried the ball forward and pulled a goal back for Emley. The visitors continued to be the equal of the opposition but were then reduced to nine men on 42 minutes when Dennis brought down a Nostell striker and was judged to be the last man back. The half time whistle came as a welcome relief but Emley were soon under the cosh in the second half despite continuing to defend with resiliance. Despite all their efforts Emley went 3-1 down on 65 minutes with Ben Gilbert on target with the first of a brace before adding his second to put Nostell 4-1 up on 72 minutes. Three minutes from time, Under 19 striker Kieran Ryan tucked away an excellent strike for Emley to finish the game at 4-2. Midfielders Joe Washington and Paul Quinn were solid for Emley in the middle of the park and man-of-the-match Nathan Hazelden alongside fellow centre-back Richard Hirst were outstanding, particularly in the second half. Club president Adrian Wright said: "Although we now appear to be holding up the rest of the league, it would seem it's only a matter of time before the team start to produce winning results."

AFC Emley 1 - 5 Staveley
M. W
NCE League One
AFC Emley suffered yet another humiliating defeat at The Welfare Ground when Staveley scored five times and left with all 3 points. This after AFC had taken a first minute lead through Maturine. With new players Steve Smith and Chris Burton making their first starts AFC started well with Smith providing the cross for Maturine to head home in the opening minute. However, AFC'S joy was short lived when from the restart Shaw equalised following a mix up in the Emley defence. Staveley scored three more times without reply in the first half. Cam twice and Pierce scoring easily. In the second period substitute Ellis completed the scoring for Staveley who, after their initial setback, won easily. Staveley scorers: Shaw 2, Cam 22, 44, Pierce 34, Ellis 76 Please
be patient is the plea LEE MATURINE fired AFC Emley into a 1-0 lead inside the first minute but the Welfare Ground side slipped to a seventh Northern Counties East League Division I defeat when going down 5-1 to Staveley MW. And club officials admitted that while everthing is rosy off the pitch, focus for improvement has to be made on it. A superb crowd of 162 gathered at the Welfare Ground to support Ray Dennis and Nicky Bramald's side, who made the step up from Yorkshire League to the NCEL at the start of this season. And it's proving to be a bit of an eye opener. Chairman Graham Roys said: "It's a bit frustrating at the moment because we are attracting great crowds but just not getting the results the supporters deserve. "It is taking time to strengthen the team. After all, we've stepped into this League within a couple of years of being formed and are competing against teams that have been in this section for 10 years or more. "We're on a long learning curve and it's taking time to get it together on the field, but we urge our supporters to stay with us because we have confidence in our coaching staff - they're always on the look-out for new players - and when these new lads blend and settle in, then the results will come." And secretary Richard Poulain added: "We have got a superb committee, chairman, president and treasurer, and off the field everything is very stable. "We just need to get a few good results under our belts on the field and it might take time, but one thing's for sure, we don't shirk a challenge. "We have the right men in charge at the top.
I've no doubt that if anyone can get it right, then Ray and Nicky
can." Further
goals by Robert Cam (22 and 44), Wesley Pierce (34) and Matthew Ellis
(76) presented the visitors with a quick League and Cup double. |

Emley
NCE League Cup 1st Round
AFC Emley made another first
round cup exit when they were beaten 3 - 1 by Staveley in the NCE League
Cup.
Although, perhaps, AFC were deservedly beaten, Staveley were assisted by some very dubious decisions by the Officials. The first 2 goals either side of half time were clearly preceded by handballs incidents either not seen or ignored by the Officials. In fact AFC started the better and made a number of incisive attacks which caused the home defence a few problems. However the home side weathered these attacks and then caused the AFC defence problems of their own. Staveley went ahead in the 36th minute when Scott benefitted by a missed handball decision and slotted home a tap in with the AFC defence waiting for the expected whistle. On 52 minutes the same 2 officials contrived to miss another blatent handball and Wharton this time slotted home. Five minutes later Staveley went further ahead when Cam shot home. AFC's consolation goal was scored in the 82nd minute by Quinn following good work by substitute Bramald. Emley

STAVELEY MW 3 AFC EMLEY 1
(League Cup 1st Round) Staveley
picked themselves up following the 5-0 hammering at Nostell to earn a
League Cup 2nd Round tie at home to Premier Division Glasshoughton
Welfare. Manager Kenny Geelan made just one change to the XI which began
the Nostell nightmare with Mark Harrison replacing Jamie Smith and regular
keeper Joel Armstrong being available once again despite being in the
middle of a league match suspension. Anthony Shaw was pushed out wide to
allow youngster Scott Wharton a place in the starting line-up with Matthew
Ellis unavailable. Staveley’s
Robert Cam shot wide of the far post within 90 seconds of the start. The
home keeper then made a decisive run out of his goal to nick the ball off
Maturine wide on the right. Staveley forward Nathan Styles was carried
off, first on a stretcher, and then by ambulance after sustaining a
serious leg injury in the 24th minute. Three minutes later Staveley’s
Cam cut through on goal but was forced wide and his resulting shot from an
acute angle was palmed to safety by McLachlan. Cam continued to impress
and made a storming run through defence in the 37th minute but the
visiting keeper once again pushed the end shot to safety. Back came Emley
with Maturine nodding wide from Storer’s deep corner. The Emley keeper
then continued his fine form with stops from Wesley Pierce and James
Baker. Tom Rowlands, sat in the stand, predicted a Staveley goal and it
came almost immediately with MARC SCOTT tapping home
following sustained pressure in the box four minutes before the interval.
Then came a moment of idiocy as the visiting manager took his frustration
over the goal onto the pitch and confronted the referee. If we all did
that then, quite simply, football wouldn’t exist. A sending-off, league
inquiry and a fine should have been the punishment but the weak referee
did little. A bitter end to a sweet first half. HALF-TIME:

goalmouth brought Staveley’s second as SCOTT WHARTON’S
overhead kick found the net from close range in the 52nd minute. Six
minutes later CAM sealed the win for Staveley with a good
run finished off with a shot beyond the keeper. Neil Cluxton came close a
minute later with a long-range effort which sailed narrowly over the Emley
crossbar. Haselden then side-footed Storer’s free-kick over in a rare
foray from the visitors. Shaw sprung the offside trap before clipping the
Emley post, while Cam saw a shot saved and Shaw headed wide. AFC gained a
consolation when QUINN tucked home in the 83rd minute and
on the stroke of full-time Armstrong saved a low 30-yard effort from

Emley Comeback Hit By A Post
A goal by the visitors after
only 9 seconds from Pindar, without an Emley player touching the ball, set the
scene for another home defeat.
However, although finding themselves 3 - 0 behind after 60 minutes something stirred and Emley suddenly found the fight to frighten their visitors with two goals in 5 minutes by Laud (62) and Prasher (67). From then on Emley peppered the Hall Road goal and had the upright not intervened when Robinson glanced a header against it on 88 minutes the comeback would have been complete. Emley played the neater compact football in the first half but could not find a way passed a resolute Hall Road defence. Following the early setback when Pindar netted, Hall Road were gifted a soft penalty scored by Farley on 19 minutes to go 2 - 0 in front and went further ahead on 60 minutes when the dangerous Pindar slotted in his second. Hall Road were certainly shaken by the Emley comeback but clung on to the lead to gain all three points.

Poulton Victoria 2 - 0
AFC Emley
FA Vase Preliminary Round
Emley
went out of the Vase at the first hurdle, beaten by a better side on the
Wirral.
The first half was fairly even with Poulton having the best of the posession, but Emley having the best chance. JP was put through by a defensive error, but despite beating the 'keeper, his shot also beat the post. Prash also had some good runs, and looked like providing our best opportunities in attack. In the second half Ray and Bram swapped things around, but Poulton started to dominate proceedings. They went ahead after an hour when a through ball beat a square defence and thier striker slotted home. Soon after it was all over when following a good save, Poulton scored direct from the resulting corner. Emley can have no complaints as their only attempt on target in the second half was a speculative lob from Maturine, which the keeper did well to push over the bar. Other than that Poulton stifled all Emley's attacks and were deserved winners. Vase now empty for AFC Emley Sep 26 2006 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner AFC EMLEY travelled to the Wirral to play Poulton in the first round of the FA Vase hoping to build on their previous week's league victory against Borrowash. But the Northern Counties East League Division I side conceded two second-half goals to go out of the competition. The first half of the match was fairly even with Poulton having the best of the possession. But Emley striker John Paul Flynn had the best chance of the half when he was put through after a defensive error and, despite beating the keeper he poked his shot wide of the target. Veteran winger Chris Prasher provided his usual speedy runs, creating some opportunities for Emley. But injuries took their toll and at half time Emley managers Ray Dennis and Nicky Bramald had to replace Joe Pinnock and Scott Needham. Poulton upped their game after the break and on 60 minutes they went ahead when a through ball beat a square Emley defence. Soon after, the game was put out of Emley's reach when the hosts added a second direct from a corner. Emley can have no complaints at the result, with their only attempt on target in the second half being a speculative lob from striker Lee Maturine. AFC Emley return to league action on Saturday hosting Hall Road Rangers at the Welfare Ground (3.00).

Goals from Tim Clarke (penalty) and a cracker from JP Flynn. This was a much improved performance with Quinn outstanding in midfield. It
was fantastic to see the AFC management and numerous former players at
Jeffrey's funeral
today. Thank you for taking the time to attend. Having lived next door but one to him for 20 years, Paul Markham summed him up brilliantly. A real character, always good for a quote and a man who loved his time with the Emley second team. Thanks again for turning up, having been away from the club due to his health for a long time now, it would have been easy for you not to attend. Nice to see Mr Wood, Mr Kettlewell, Mr Matley all people who were true gents to me as I was growing up. Some of the old players looked younger now, then they did back then - Chris Hellawell (a legend in the seconds), Willie Carpenter, Mr Woods (sorry can't recall his first name - but a brilliant keeper). |

Man of the Match: Dean Whiley The Shiners went into this match a Lees Lane, against the other newcomers to NCEL Div 1 without Nick Ghuislanzoni who had transferred to the Unibond Outfit, Gresley Rovers, within a week of missing a penalty against them in the FA Cup replay. Also missing were a number of players through injury and work commitments. Mark Harvey was again included in goal and debutants Jourdan Blair and Ryan Mellors were included on the bench. In a lack-lust first half, against a team, which will no doubt struggle to maintain NCEL status, the Shiners attack were finding it hard to penetrate through their defence. The strength of their attacking was confirmed to two half chances. In the 11th min Adam Newton was put through the Emley defence only to be intercepted by the goalkeeper Graham McLachlan and in the 36th min Damien Powell did well on the left beating two defenders before crossing the ball weakly. Just before the interval, Powell was so frustrated he shot from all of 30 yards which went well over the crossbar. Whenever Emley moved forward the Shiners rearguard of Chris Murdock, Dean Whiley and Joe Atkinson intercepted any danger. Half Time:
South Normanton 0 – 0 AFC Emley South Normanton came out for the second period and appeared totally revitalised, obviously not wanting a repeat of Saturday’s second half against Nostel. They pushed forward with some urgency and in the 49th min an incident occurred on the half way line which left the Shiners skipper, Atkinson sprawling in agony. Following consultation with his assistants referee Mr Hermuzi ordered Emley’s centre forward Alan Laud from the pitch. It was
all in the hands of the Shiners now as they pushed forward.
In the 55th min they went ahead from a bizarre goal.
From a corner on the left the
ball was met by Emley winger Joe
Wasminton who headed
straight into the far top corner of his own net past Mclachlan. Just before time, the Shiners scored what appeared to be their best goal of the night. From a cross into the box by Murdock, Man of the Match Whiley headed across the goalmouth for substitute Keiron Saxton to head home. Saxton was adjudged offside by Mr Hermuzi.to the amazement of all in the ground. Final word: A game of two halves – The Shiners must be congratulated on a near perfect defensive display but they must learn to punish teams of inferior quality when attacking. Report

Gedling
Town 6 - 2 AFC Emley NCE League One From Gedling website Gedling could not stop scoring in their 6-2 win over visitors AFC Emley with 3 goals in each half and there should of been more. Gedling hit the net after only 2 minutes but was ruled offside. So from the first of many long reaching balls from the back by Mellon S reached A JONES head over Emley's keeper Wright. Again only 4 minutes later S Mellon and A JONES connected for Gedling's second this time from the left of the pitch with a fine strike. Emley had their chances when Laud lob over Beattie hit the cross bar being the only goal bound shot the others were good crosses and runs but little to bother Gedling's defence. On 28, S Mellon and A Jones connected again but S Mellon went one step to far in his run and was tackled just near the 6 yard box and the injury sustained ruled him out of the game and Richardson came in his place. This time Jepson provided the timely pass, despite being brought down by scathing tackle from the back, the pass set RICHARDSON on his way with only Wright to beat and neatly paid Emley back for the terrible tackle on Jepson. Half Time: 3 - 0 Emley came back out fighting in the second half with Beattie having to make a fine save to keep a clean sheet on 47, but Emley had to wait until the 70th minute to get a goal back through LAUD after Gedling lost possession easily in their own half. But the balance was restored when sub D Jones was too nippy for Hirst who could only try shirt pulling to slow Jones down but was spotted by the referee who gave the penalty, This was promptly put away by TURNER to the low right corner of the goal. Gedling should have had more as Horder took too long in the 6 yd box from a great pass but was promptly tackled. JEPSON showed Horder how it should be done when D Jones again proving difficult to stop pushed the balled through to JEPSON who struck ball first time to get Gedling's 5th. Emley get their second goal with a minute to go from a fine strike by HIRST, but they were repaid this cheek by some great play from Spiers who intercepted Emley's throw in and got D Jones on his way who then selflessly put ball to better positioned TURNER who got his second and Gedling's 6th in the last touch of the game! Full Time: 6 - 2 Report by Tony White Team: Beattie, Pratt, S Mellon, Hogg, Green, Evans, Horder, L Mellon, A Jones, Turner, Jepson. Subs: Spiers, Richardson, D Jones. Referee: R Tarbatt. |

Rossington
Main 3 - 2 AFC Emley Northern Counties East
League – Div One This game had almost everything, goals, excitement and controversy. The only thing missing was three points for Emley. The game started brightly when Emley scored after only 10 secs.A mistake by the Rossington keeper was pouinced upon by Gas O'Reilly who unselfishly rolled the ball across the mouth of the goal to give Jamie Bramald a tap in from close range. From then on, it was all Emley who after 14 mins were awarded a penalty when there was a cynical trip in the area. The Rossington defender was lucky to walk away with only a caution. Uncharacteristically, Joe Washington sent the shot for goal wide. Rossington were soon reduced to 10 men when Allan Laud was scythed down just outside the area. Emley went in at half time only one goal up ; having had at least 80% of the ball and many chances. Immediately after the restart some poor defending allowed Bradley to equalise and a good goal, again from Bradley, after 55 mins meant Rossington took a 2 -1 advantage. Emley still played their attacking game with one of the chances seeing Paul Quinn seeing his lovely header strike a post. Another penalty was awarded when the Rossington keeper brought down Laud in the area after 58 minutes. Farce was to follow when Lee Maturine took the penalty. The kick rebounded to him off the goalkeeper; Lee duly slotted it home, but the referee gave offside against him!! This
came at a critical time of the game; made worse when Rossington went
straight back down the field and Fraser scored to give the home side a two
goal cushion. Lee Maturine then brought the score
back to 3 - 2 and several more chances went begging. Team:

Teversal
2 - 0 AFC Emley Wilkinson Sword Trophy We played much the better football and outplayed the opposition for most of the game. However we failed to capitalise on our many chances. Teversal however made the most of their few chances and at the end of the day that's what counts. Teversal scored after 50 mins through Thorpe and then in the 90th minute Hall put the result in no doubt. |

Report
from Pontefract Collieries Website Eastwood Cracker Revives Ponte Rod Naylor, 21 August 2006 12:07 PONTEFRACT COLLIERIES 1 - 1 AFC Emley Northern Counties East League – Div One Saturday, August 19th, 2006
Report by Rod Naylor,
Pontefract Collieries FC
The new Emley club shaded
the first half of this encounter, but Pontefract certainly dominated the
second. An early Emley cross had to be deflected over for a corner
as Alan Laud’s effort caused the first danger. This was rapidly
followed by another a really good effort kept out by Matt Herschell-Smith
for another corner.
By this stage the clouds had
opened and it absolutely teemed it down. Playing conditions were
difficult to say the least but the players seemed to cope well. A
couple of threats from Emley, a free kick on the right which caused a
bit of danger, and from the spills of that Matt Herschell-Smith came out
very well. Then a dangerous cross from the right which no-one could
make contact with. Emley threatened again, this time from a
throw-in on the left hand side, seeing a stabbed shot spooned over and
wide.
The best chance of the half
came from a cross from the left, met first time by Chris Prasher, which
was just wide of Matt Herschell-Smith’s right hand post, just as well
as he wouldn’t have had a chance.
A hopeful shot by Jonathan
Washington after a run through middle, from all of 30 yards, went over
the top, and was no real danger.
For Colls, Glen Shelley put
a good ball into box from Oliver Crossley, but he was a bit slow to
react, but Ponte were starting to probe into the penalty area now. They
won a corner straight after, Paul Eastwood took it, and a clean header
by Kevin Duckworth was put wide of the left hand post.
From a throw on the right,
Chris Shaw was found just inside, he tried to get a shot in but was
wide. Paul Eastwood got another good cross in from the left, but
again no-one on was on the end of it.
With half-time approaching,
Phil Mann for the Pewits then skinned past Paul Eastwood, took the ball
on into box, and got the best of a rebound off Matt Herschell-Smith. The
ball fell to Alan Laud who put it over, it was quite a miss. Another
cross from the left by Emley, this time headed clear for a corner by
Mike Rossiter, from which debutant Ben Moore produced a commanding
headed clearance.
Half-time. Collieries
turned to the bench for assistance to try and turn the tide. Amos
came on for O’Neill, and soon after Bailey for Crossley. But
immediately Emley scored via a cross from the left, finished by a clean
header from Lee Maturine on 49 minutes.
Colls gave a great response,
and totally dominated the rest of the game. Richard Coupe made a
good break down left, found Eastwood, who was fouled. The free-kick
produced pressure from Chris Shaw, forcing the first of many second half
corners. The flag-kick was helped on by an Emley defender, falling
to Mike Rossiter, there was a scramble with the Emley defence, resulting
in another corner. There was yet more pressure as Paul Eastwood put
the ball in again, forcing another corner, the only relief for a tiring
defence.
From a free-kick on the
right, Chris Shaw put a great ball in, just missed by Neil Cuss, then
Duckworth forced another corner, from which Micky Amos got a touch. There
were lots of appeals for hand ball, waved away by the referee, and for
Ponte the only result was an injury to Ben Moore.
A swift move started by Paul
Eastwood from the left-back position, found Shaw in midfield, he put
Duckworth in but Emley keeper Tim Stephenson just got to the pass first.
Cuss carried the ball from
midfield, slipped it out to Terry Bailey, whose cross was only partially
cleared, falling to Paul Eastwood who forced a great save from
Stephenson. There was just a slight scare at the back when Matt
Herschell-Smith spilled a greasy ball.
Terry Bailey was adding
another dimension on right side, and forced another corner. There
was a great chance for Ponte as the ball was swept in and met by Paul
Eastwood, whose shot forced a fantastic save from Stephenson for yet
another corner. Eastwood’s free-kick was met by Mike Rossiter,
but he couldn’t quite shape himself up to force it in.
Duckworth was put through,
and decided to back-heel to Micky Amos, who did the same to try and set
up Chris Shaw, but the chance had gone. Why didn’t someone shoot?
Shelley showed good spirit
in the middle, rousing the side and getting in some crucial tackles as
Ponte continue to dominate the second half. A Richard Coupe ball in
from the left needed just a touch by Micky Amos, but he couldn’t quite
get there, and the ball ended safe in the keeper’s arms.
After 85 minutes, Collieries
at last produced a great goal, finished by Paul Eastwood coming in from
the left into the penalty area. He smashed his shot into net,
giving the goalkeeper no chance. Eastwood could have gone on to win
it, but another shot crashed the stanchion. Eastwood again found
space and linked with Amos, whose shot was over the bar.
In the end a draw was some
satisfaction for both sides, giving each their first point of the
season. But Collieries are already in danger of being tagged a
“second half team”, having scored all four of their goals after the
break, and conceding 3 of their 4 in the first period. If only they
could maintain the standard of play shown in the second half here
against Emley, they could have serious ambitions of being involved in
the promotion race this season.
Collieries: Herschell-Smith,
O’Neill (Amos 45), Coupe R, Rossiter M, Cuss, Shaw, Crossley (Bailey T
48), Moore, Duckworth, Shelley, Eastwood. Unused Sub: Seed
Emley: Stephenson,
Mann, Dennis, Robinson, Traynor, Storer, Prasher, Washington, Laud,
Maturine, Clarke. Subs: Tomlinson, Flynn, Bramald

Teversal
2 - 0 AFC Emley
NCE League One
AFC still upbeat after debut loss Aug 15 2006 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner AFC EMLEY are eyeing an improvement against Pontefract Collieries on Saturday after losing 2-0 at Teversal on their Northern Counties East League Division I debut. Despite a spirited show by Ray Dennis's side, the home team from Sutton-in-Ashfield, near Mansfield, ensured there was to be no dream start after AFC's elevation from the West Yorkshire League. It's certain to be a tough introduction to the NCEL for AFC, because their opening three league games are all away due to cricket matches at the Welfare Ground. AFC also return to Teversal in the first round of the league's Wilkinson Sword Trophy a week tonight (7.45). The club have made five new signings to add to the squad who did battle in the West Yorkshire League last time around. Barnsley-based Portuguese Joaquim Samedo, who comes from Setubal and has played for Farense, is a midfielder. So is Holmfirth-based Paul Storer, who was previously with Glossop North End. Wakefield-based Alan Lord, who was among the goals for Beverley last term, is a striker. Centre-back Ben Traynor has joined from local football and goalkeeper Mark Franklin from Wetherby Athletic. Franklin, Traynor and Samedo all figured on Saturday, when AFC were without Max Joice, Joe Pinnock, Joe Washington and Paul Quinn, a key quartet from last season. AFC's preparations also suffered because of their late arrival after an accident caused a traffic jam on the M1. Teversal scored on 35 and 84 minutes, through Hall and Fletcher respectively while AFC's best chances fell to Tim Clarke. "We failed to convert our bright pre-season form into a league success, but there's plenty to be positive about," said club secretary Richard Poulain. Report from Teversal Web siteTEVERSAL – Wilson, Rhodes, O’Callaghan, Mawdsley, Ashford, Courtie, Hall (Hauton 87), Walker, Hutchinson (Clarke 45), Fletcher M., Williams. Subs Not Used – Grozier. AFC EMLEY – Franklin, Mann, O’Reilly, Robinson, Traynor (Dennis 85), Tomlinson, Prasher (Storer 53), Maturine, Laud (Samedo 53), Flynn, Clarke. Subs Not Used – All used. REFEREE – Mr James Hermuzi of Rotherham. MAN OF MATCH – Teversal – Matt Fletcher, AFC Emley – Tim Clarke. ATTENDANCE – 79. “Tevie Make Steady Start” All the pre-season work done and preparations complete to start the new season, everybody ready to go but both Teversal and Emley had to deal with problems out of their control. Firstly Teversal were hit by there gas supply being cut off inadvertently by Transco when doing work in Carnarvon Street. After consultation with the Northern Counties East League and Emley Officials it was agreed the game would go on, even though there was no hot water at the ground. Secondly Emley then had the disaster of being held up in an accident on the M1 that delayed their journey and a late arrival that saw the kick off delayed by 15 minutes. So when the game started, Emley shown their delay hadn’t effected their preparations to start lively without putting the home goal under any real threat. Teversal played their part and looked a threat on the break and nearly took the lead on 10 minutes when Walkers searching cross beat the visitors defence but was also only marginally too far for the onrushing Hall. Emley’s best chance in the half came only 2 minutes later when Flynn held the ball up well before creating his own space to deliver a telling cross to the impressive Tim Clarke who produced a well executed volley that flew marginally wide of he target. Teversal having quelled the lively start by the visitors started to have more of the ball which allowed them to stretch the play and imposed themselves on the game. This was rewarded on 36 minutes when Williams low cross was allowed to reach the back post for Hall to calmly pick his spot to fire across the stranded Franklin to put the home side in front, a lead that they would take into the half time break. The second half saw Teversal controlling the game by keeping possession and being patient in waiting for the right opportunities, with a number of openings being created. Rhodes produced a couple of excellent far post crosses and on both occasions Williams failed to make the best of the opportunities. Rhodes also combined well with Hall down the right and on the 77th minute the pair combined with Hall having a powerful drive deflected by O’Reilly for a corner. Williams quality delivery from the resulting corner found Mawdsley who directed his powerful header over the bar. But it was the same combination that was the source to the second goal, again a quality corner from Williams saw Mawdsley’s header blocked on the goal line with Matt Fletcher on hand to smash the 85th minute decider. Emley did try and force their way back into the game, but the only effort of note came, when O’Reilly produced a quality free kick that clipped the outside of the post. But the Teversal defence held firm like they had throughout the game with Jono Wilson making his Teversal debut in goal organising his defence throughout to make the home rearguard look solid and assured to give a good foundation to build on this workmanlike performance. Teversal’s next game is an F.A. Cup Sponsored by E.On Extra Preliminary Round tie against Loughborough Dynamos of the Midland Football Alliance, a level above the Tevie Boys in the National League System. So a giant killing act is required if the Carnarvon Street club is to progress on Saturday (19-08-06) with the kick off being at 3.00pm. |

Friendly AFC Emley v Huddersfield Town Hero Stephenson gets big ovation Jul 12 2006 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner TOWN dominated the show but it was Emley keeper Tim Stephenson who got the standing ovation. The 18-year-old from Dalton produced a catalogue of tremendous saves to prevent Town from at least trebling their tally. In front of 1,280 at the Welfare Ground, a record crowd for the new club, Stephenson - who has come through the youth ranks - could do nothing to stop goals from Andy Booth, John McAliskey and Michael Collins (late on) sealing a comfortable Town win. But his heroic display rewarded a battling effort from the Northern Counties East League side, who massed men behind the ball and provided Peter Jackson's side with an ideal opening workout. The only hiccups were injuries which forced off right-back Tom Clarke and central midfielder Adnan Ahmed and neither of them will be involved at Harrogate Town tomorrow night (7.45). AFC bosses Ray Dennis and Nicky Bramald, preparing for a League opener at Nottinghamshire club Teversal on August 12, will be happy with the application of their side, even though they gave the ball away needlessly at times. It was one such mistake which led to Booth's neatly taken opener in the 22nd minute, cutting inside before placing a clever left-foot shot wide of Stephenson's dive. At that stage Town were building patiently, with Tom Clarke and Matthew Young linking well down the right, with a constant supply of ball from Mark Hudson and Ahmed in the centre, although it was from a left-wing raid between Chris Brandon and Danny Adams (who supplied a perfect cross) that McAliskey headed Town two ahead in the 33rd minute. A firm drive straight at Paul Rachubka by AFC striker Alan Laud was the home side's only effort on goal in the first half, although Richard Hirst sent a header just over in their opening attack of the second. Stephenson, who made a super save to deny Ahmed just before the break, made even better stops to keep out McAliskey, Brandon and Young in the space of just two second-half minutes. He followed up by touching Booth's fine volley over the top, blocking brilliantly from McAliskey and Brandon at close range and then palming away a John McCombe header. Hudson was also frustrated in terrific style as Stephenson took the man-of-the-match award, but Collins' late goal came from the best move of the match and left the keeper, for once, stranded in his six-yard box. AFC Emley - Stephenson, Robinson, O'Reilly, Hazeldine, Hirst, Quinn, Prasher, Tomlinson, Laud, Mugadza, Clarke. Town - Rachubka, T Clarke (Mirfin 65), Adams, Hudson, McCombe, N Clarke, Brandon, Ahmed (Collins 79), Booth (Hand 72), McAliskey, Young. Referee - Jason Tyas (Honley). |

Attitude
spot on for Jacko! Jul
12 2006 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner NEW signings Luke Beckett and Matt Glennon make Town debuts tomorrow night with manager Peter Jackson praising his squad's excellent attitude. Jackson watched Andy Booth, John McAliskey and Michael Collins seal a 3-0 friendly win at AFC Emley last night in which Tom Clarke (knee) and Adnan Ahmed (ankle) suffered minor knocks. Town now head to the Conference North side Harrogate Town in 24 hours with Glennon in goal and Beckett aiming to build on his successful loan spell with the club and Jackson explained: "I was pleased with our performance last night and the attitude of the players summed up how it's been all pre-season: excellent. "If it hadn't been for a great performance by Emley's keeper (Tim Stephenson) then we would have scored a lot more, but it was a very good workout and the knocks we got to Tom Clarke and Adnan Ahmed weren't serious. "I'm delighted for AFC, too, that they got almost 1,300 up because they always look after us well and I think the fans went home happy with what they saw. "Now, our supporters can look forward to seeing Luke Beckett and Matt Glennon at Harrogate and I'll be looking for another solid run from the lads." |

Jerome
lands £3.5m move May 29 2006 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner HUDDERSFIELD-born Cardiff striker Cameron Jerome (son of former Emley player Hansome Jerome) will fly back from Miami this week to conclude a £3.5m transfer to Birmingham. The 19-year-old former Royds Hall High School and Huddersfield New College pupil, who bagged 20 goals in the Championship last season and earned England Under 21 recognition, is viewed by St Andrews chief Steve Bruce as the man to help fire them straight back into the Premiership. Birmingham have agreed the fee with Cardiff for the 6ft powerhouse, who played junior football for Huddersfield clubs West End and Stile Common, and confirmed on their website that managing director Karren Brady met Jerome's agent and agreed contract terms. All that's needed now is Jerome's signature on the dotted line to complete a remarkable rise to prominence for the son of former Emley player Hanson, who has 27 goals to his credit in just 79 senior appearances. Having had trials with various Northern clubs, Jerome joined Cardiff as a trainee in October 2003 and signed as a professional a year later. He scored seven goals in 32 games in his first season, and burst through last term as one of the most dangerous frontmen outside the Premiership. |
