Apr 28th Wakefield v Alsager Town

Wakefield were defeated in their final game of the season after a poor game of football at College Grove which had an obvious end of season feel to it.

Neil Smith came closest to scoring for Wakefield in the first half, his goalbound shot on 36 minutes deflected wide and his first time shot on 39 minutes pushed round the post by Alsager goalkeeper Matt Conkie.

Alsager took the lead on 43 minutes. A low shot from Chris Rowley was deflected past Andy Woods and hacked clear off the line by a defender. The referee's assistant adjudged that the ball had crossed the line and a goal was awarded, a decision which not many in the ground agreed with.

Wakefield were struggling to string passes together in the second half and failed to create clear cut goalscoring opportunities.

A Brighton Mugadza cross from a left wing free kick was only just kept out by Conkie who was stretching to reach the ball at the far post on 56 minutes.

Substitute Ben Hardy volleyed at goal on 73 minutes and saw his shot from the edge of the area easily saved by Conkie. Hardy was injured in the process and had to be replaced after only 17 minutes on the field during his attempted return from a recent injury.

Alsager saw out the final five minutes by guarding the ball right in the corner of the pitch, gaining numerous throw ins, corners and free kicks with Wakefield unable to win the ball back.

Apr 25th  UniBond League - Press Statement

The UniBond League is hopeful it has taken the sting out of the controversy on restructuring following the recent decision of the FA’s League Committee that the League would operate with two regional First Divisions each of 18 clubs for season 2007/8. At a meeting held on Sunday the League Management Committee reached agreement on a way forward and this was supported later that day by the member clubs at a Special Meeting.

The good news is that the UniBond League endorses its support for a 1,2,3,6 structure with the League having two regional First Divisions of 22 clubs each to give it parity with the Isthmian and Southern Leagues.

In the spirit of co-operation and to demonstrate its will towards achieving this final objective the League has, as an initial measure, agreed to accept the decision of the FA League’s Committee that UniBond League shall have two regional First Divisions of 18 clubs each for season 2007/8 as it sees this as the right way forward in the development of the structure. However, the League recognises that the future constitution of the UniBond League is still of paramount importance and therefore, as a condition of acceptance, it is seeking from the FA by 14th May a written assurance that the constitution of the UniBond League will increase to two First Divisions of 20 clubs for season 2008/9 with a further increase to two Divisions of 22 clubs each by 2009/10 or no later than 2010/11.

The UniBond League is also asking the FA for agreement in principle to (1) supplement what would normally be a 34 match fixture programme with an additional 8 games to be compiled in a format yet to be agreed by member clubs and (2) for the League to be in a position to allocate, both numerically and geographically, the total of at least 36 clubs who will comprise the two UniBond League regional First Divisions taking in to account the views of member clubs.

Whilst disappointed that, at this stage, it has only been allocated Divisions of 18 clubs the UniBond League remains hopeful the League’s Committee can still see its way forward to increasing these numbers to 2x20 for season 2007/8 as it does not consider it is yet too late. The UniBond League is pleased that the expectations of the extra clubs promoted from the North West Counties League, Northern Counties East League, Midland Football Alliance and the Northern League have been met and are of the view that there still remains an ideal opportunity for similar benefits to be applied to clubs in the higher promotion positions in Southern based Step 5 competitions.

The UniBond League will not be making any further comments until a response is received from the Football Association.
Apr 23rd Buxton v Wakefield Unibond President's Cup
Report by Dan Brownhill

Buxton had luck on their side when defeating Wakefield in the President's Cup Final at Silverlands following a terrible mistake by one of the referee's assistants midway through the second half.

Wakefield were without Ben Hardy who failed a late fitness test just before the game. Andy Shields was still missing with a cracked rib and Andy Battye was also still unavailable.

Buxton threatened early on as Mark Nangle sliced a shot wide from 10 yards, but it was Wakefield who took an early lead in the twelfth minute. A Niall O'Brien through ball saw Neil Smith get the wrong side of a defender before easily beating home goalkeeper Kyle Sutcliffe with a volleyed effort from 20 yards.

Buxton were enjoying more possession but Wakefield were battling hard and always looked dangerous on the break. On 23 minutes Brighton Mugadza fired a shot wide from 20 yards whilst at the other end Sahun Doxey scooped over on 38 minutes.

Buxton found an equaliser three minutes before the break. The hosts always looked dangerous from deep crosses and it was a deep free kick that led to the goal, the ball was headed back across goal at the far post leaving Mark Reed with an easy headed chance from two yards out.

The home side took the lead three minutes into the second half when Michael Towey headed home a right wing corner.

Then the controversial moment arrived on 59 minutes. Niall O'Brien's long range effort took a wicked deflection, span around Sutcliffe and into the bottom corner of the net. The ball had struck a black post behind the goal and come back out from inside the net fooling the referee's assistant who mistakenly thought it had gone wide and bounced back into play. The referee had initially awarded the goal, a decision which none of the Buxton players or the majority of the supporters who were stood behind that goal were complaining about, but after consulting his assistant disallowed it, much to the fury of the Wakefield players. The angle at which the ball had come out from inside the goal meant it was not possible that the ball had gone wide. After the game the officials admitted they had made a huge mistake with even the Buxton players admitting the ball had gone in but it was too late for Wakefield by then.

Wakefield almost found another equaliser on 74 minutes when Smith missed a headed chance from a Stoker right wing free kick.

Buxton sealed the game, which had already been spoilt after the disallowed goal, with a well taken goal on 77 minutes. Towey took the ball down well, turned outside Chris Fawcus and sent a low drive into the bottom corner from the edge of the 18 yard area.

Wakefield failed to create any further chances in the closing minutes as Buxton saw the game out well after Wakefield understandably seemed to have lost their impetus.

Report by Phil Rann

Buxton may well have comfortably won the league by being the best side but they helped themselves to a large slice of luck against Wakefield in the Unibond Presidents Cup Final on Monday night.

Wakefield were missing influential player Ben Hardy for the game as he failed a late fitness test, while Andy Shields was still out with a cracked rib.

In an entertaining first half, both sides had good chances to take the lead, Brighton Mugadza shooting well over from the edge of the area, and then at the other end, a volley by Reed at the far post went inches wide of Andy Woods' goal.

In the twelfth minute, Wakefield took the lead, Niall O'Brien's defence splitting pass found Neil Smith, and he beat the Buxton keeper comfortably from 25 yards with a shot into the bottom corner.

Wakefield continued to play nice football, and good build up between Gareth Stoker and Mugadza set up O'Brien, but his first time shot was well over the bar.

Buxton were close to an equaliser on 26 minutes when a deep cross from a free kick was won at the back post, but the Buxton forward could only head the ball wide from a tight angle.

Mugadza shot wide again before Wakefield survived a large appeal for handball in their own penalty area when the ball bounced up and caught Damien Henderson on the arm. The referee waved away the home side's appeals.

Wakefield almost went 2-0 ahead from a O'Brien free kick which caused problems at the back post. Demi Kyriacou nodded it on, and Smith's shot at the back post was deflected behind for a corner.

Buxton equalised three minutes before half time when another free kick was won at the back post across the face of goal, and Reed had an easy finish from two yards with Woods stranded.

Two minutes into the second half, Buxton took the lead from another set piece. A corner was delivered into the six yard box, and Doxey beat both Henderson and Declan Normaschild to the ball and headed in to send all but 25 of the crowd of 712 into raptures.

The controversial moment came on the hour mark. Good play by O'Brien on the left found Marc Townsend free at the back post, and he finished well, but the ball hit the black post that keeps the net up at the back of the goal and bounced back out across the face of goal. The referee gave a goal, the Buxton fans behind the goal could be seen putting their hands on the head and the goalkeeper hoofed the ball back to the middle for the kick off before the linesman called the referee and overrode the decision, much to the disgust of Wakefield players and supporters, and much to the unbelievable surprise of the Buxton players and supporters. Three Wakefield players were booked in the aftermath in what has to be the worst decision made by an official this season.

Wakefield still had a chance to make it 2-2 ten minutes later, when a deep free kick found Smith unmarked, but he headed just wide when he really should have done better.

15 minutes from time, the game was as good as over when Doxey scored his second to make it 3-1 when he turned outside Chris Fawcus, and sent a powerful shot into the far corner, giving Woods no chance.

Understandably, Wakefield had had the confidence sucked out of them, and failed to create in the last quarter of an hour, while Buxton could have made it 4-1 but Woods got down well to save a Doxey shot.

The Bucks picked up their fifth trophy in three seasons with a 3-1 victory over a plucky Wakefield side at the Silverlands on Monday night. (In the competition they first won when it was first competed for in 1982). Neil Smith gave the visitors an early lead but Mark Reed levelled on half time as Buxton began to get the upper hand. Michael Towey scored early in the second half for Buxton and Wakefield thought they had levelled but the goal was controversially ruled out following an intervention from one of the assistants. Michael Towey made sure of the victory on 78 minutes with his second goal of the game to round off a thoroughly superb season for the Bucks.
Credit to the Wakefield players and staff who were very sporting in the circumstances following the disallowed goal and gave Buxton three tough games through the season.

Apr 21st Kidsgrove Athletic v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield continued their excellent end of season form with a superb away victory in Staffordshire.

Wakefield made two changes to the side that drew at Shepshed in midweek. Neil Smith and Darrell Kendall both started the game in place of Gareth Stoker who dropped to the bench and Rob MacQuarrie who has returned to Farsley Celtic after his loan spell expired on Friday.

Wakefield had an excellent chance to open the scoring inside the first minute. A long ball forward saw Smith beat the offside trap but his attempt at lobbing Kidsgrove goalkeeper James Coates ended with the ball sailing a couple of feet over the crossbar.

Kidsgrove deservedly took the lead on 28 minutes. Aiden Matranga battled his way through the Wakefield defence before poking the ball past Andy Woods into the bottom corner.

The home side had the ball in the net again on 31 minutes but Michael Lennon's effort was disallowed for offside.

Wakefield contained Kidsgrove much better in the second half. With their first shot on target Damien Henderson thundered a 20 yard free kick into the bottom corner on 47 minutes to level the scores.

Their second shot on target was a header from Henderson following a Ben Hardy corner that had bounced dangerously inside the penalty area. The header sailed past Coates into the goal to give Wakefield the lead.

Wakefield then defended superbly well and restricted Kidsgrove to half chances, the best of which fell to Byron Moore on 67 minutes, his shot from the edge of the area bouncing wide off the outside of the post.

Woods was also alert to get down well to a Matranga effort on 73 minutes but Wakefield held out well to secure the three points.

Apr 18th Shepshed Dynamo v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield stayed within touching distance of the teams above them after coming from behind to draw at managerless Shepshed.

Wakefield were still without Neil Smith for the game along with Andy Shields, who cracked a rib at Bamber Bridge last Saturday, and Andy Battye who was unavailable.

Both sides took a while to settle down on a difficult playing surface. The closest either team came to threatening the score in the opening quarter of the game was a 25 yard shot from Shepshed's Richie Saunders that flew just over the bar.

Marc Townsend slashed a shot just wide for Wakefield on 24 minutes but it was the home side who took the lead just after the half hour mark. A shot from the edge of the area was deflected leaving Andy Woods with no time to react, the ball striking the post, coming back into play and falling nicely for Saunders to bundle it into the net.

Wakefield came out after half time in a positive mood and controlled the play for much of the second half.

On 49 minutes a good run by Ben Hardy was stopped by a defender. The ball broke to Townsend who sent a curling shot just over the cross bar from the edge of the 18 yard area.

Two minutes later a superb through ball by player manager Gareth Stoker was latched onto by Hardy but his drilled effort from 15 yards only found the side netting.

It was Hardy again threatening the score on 53 minutes, Shepshed struggling to cope with the lively Wakefield winger. This time his snapshot from 8 yards out was somehow blocked on the goal line.

Stoker, who proved an influential man for Wakefield in midfield all evening, sent Townsend away down the right on the hour. He was forced wide but managed to get in a low cross which was met by Demi Kyriacou. Kyriacou hit the ball first time on the turn, but unfortunately it shot straight into the arms of a relieved Jonathan Noon in the Shepshed goal.

Wakefield eventually found their equaliser on 68 minutes. Hardy stuck a sweet first time volley from 25 yards that flew into the bottom corner of the net with Noon not able to react to it in time.

Wakefield threw everything forward in an attempt to find a winning goal with Damien Henderson thrown up front and Rob MacQuarrie, playing his last game for Wakefield after a loan spell, switching to centre back. Bobby Stevenson took over at right back until he was substituted, when Niall O'Brien took on this role.

Wakefield could not find a way through however, the closest they came in the closing minutes a thundering Townsend volley on 82 minutes that was parried away by Noon and just taken away from Darrell Kendall's feet as he attempted to follow up.

Apr 14th Bamber Bridge v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield moved out of the bottom three for the first time this season after picking up a superb away victory in Lancashire.

Wakefield were missing Brighton Mugadza and striker Neil Smith who was suspended for the game, with Damien Henderson and Ben Hardy coming into the starting line up to replace them.

The visitors attacked straight from the off with an excellent Niall O'Brien through ball proving just too strong for the chasing Ben Hardy, goalkeeper David Newnes racing out of his area to clear from Hardy's feet.

A rib injury to Andy Shields forced Wakefield into an early substitution with Bobby Stevenson coming on to replace the midfield man on 14 minutes.

Damien Henderson was winning everything in the air up front for Wakefield and it was his flick on on 20 minutes that led to Demi Kyriacou lobbing the ball over Newnes but unfortunately also over the crossbar.

A good move by Bamber Bridge on 24 minutes set Tom Ince clear down the left but he dragged his effort on goal well wide.

A minute later Wakefield had the lead. A fantastic chipped ball in from Gareth Stoker found Niall O'Brien whose flick header bounced into the goal. The net was unguarded as Newnes had attempted to come and claim the ball but the Bamber goalkeeper was some way off reaching it before O'Brien.

A thunderous free kick from Henderson on 30 minutes was superbly tipped over the bar by Newnes as Wakefield threatened to score again before half time.

Bamber's best chance saw Andy Woods pulling off an excellent double save to deny Alex Porter's attempt at getting the home side back into the game on 32 minutes.

Wakefield came out for the second half looking for another goal. Two minutes in O'Brien's long throw found its way to Hardy at the far post. His first time effort brought a good save from Newnes who managed to beat the ball away.

Bamber began to come into the game a little more but couldn't manage to dominate proceedings with Wakefield always dangerous on the break.

On 50 minutes Woods was down well to smother Porter's effort after he had got the better of Declan Normaschild.

Two minutes later Danny Mahoney's 25 yard drive flew just wide. Wakefield then began to settle down again before both sides had men sent off.

The red cards came on 59 minutes. Mahoney was dismissed for Bamber Bridge for elbowing O'Brien in the face with the Wakefield man also dismissed for throwing an elbow. Bamber Bridge substitute Stuart Beech was also sent off despite not being on the field of play. Beech was warming up near the touchline when the incident took place and was shown a red card for swearing at the referee's assistant.

On 76 minutes Henderson's goalbound volley was well blocked, with Kyriacou's overhead kick from the follow up flying over the bar.

Wakefield should have sealed the game on 81 minutes when Hardy was put clean through on goal by Kyriacou. Hardy attempted to round Newnes but the Bamber goalkeeper was down quickly to claim the ball at the Wakefield man's feet.

Wakefield saw out the remaining nine minutes without much danger arising, the back four excellent throughout the afternoon.

Apr 9th  Wakefield v Bradford PA
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield earned a deserved point against play-off hopefuls Bradford at College Grove after a well contested game between the two local rivals.

Wakefield started brightly, the returning Demi Kyriacou taking the ball past a defender in the very first minute and bringing a smart one handed save from Jon Worsnop in the visitors goal.

On 6 minutes Brighton Mugadza used his strength to hold off Bradford captain Gary Shaw but put his attempted finish the wrong side of the post.

Bradford took the lead against the run of play on 19 minutes. Mark Ward climbed to head home an excellent cross from Liam Flynn.

On 28 minutes the scores were back level. A penalty was awarded after a clear handball in the area and Mugadza stepped up to send Worsnop the wrong way from the spot.

Bradford almost had a second goal five minutes before half time. A superb flick from Kevin Sanasy put Danny Davidson in. Davidson unselfishly sent a low ball across the face of goal which Ward reached but his poke at goal was deflected wide.

A minute later the ball broke to Neil Smith on the edge of the 18 yard area at the other end of the field. He took the ball down smartly and volleyed at goal but found Worsnop in good form, the Bradford keeper pulling off a good save at full stretch.

In first half injury time Wakefield came close to taking the lead. Kyriacou got on the end of Gareth Stoker's corner but saw his header blocked right on the goalline by a defender, the referee's assistant waving away Wakefield's claims that the ball had crossed the line.

Two minutes into the second half Wakefield did take the lead. Kyriacou's ball across the six yard box was put into his own goal by the stretching Neil Grayston.

Three minutes later Mugadza battled his way through on goal and let fly with a powerful volley that unfortunately flew straight into the arms of the grateful Worsnop.

Bradford were back level on 66 minutes after being awarded a controversial free kick. The ball was sent in from the deep and deflected on to Rob Morgan who scored with a diving header that went in off the post.

Andy Shields sent a 25 yard curler just wide on 73 minutes and on 77 minutes a Stoker deep free kick was met by Niall O'Brien but his header was well held by Worsnop.

Neither side could find a third goal despite their best efforts and the game ended in a draw.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield picked up a point against local rivals Bradford PA in the football version of Wakefield v Bradford at College Grove on Monday.

The home side started the strongest with Demi Kyriacou back in the team; Brighton Mugadza doing really well to get behind the defence but then shooting wide of the goal.

Then Neil Smith shot wide when well placed after the Bradford keeper had fumbled a Niall O'Brien long throw.

Bradford went ahead against the run of play on 21 minutes when Ward was given time and space to shoot home from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.

Wakefield still looked dangerous, and won only their third penalty of the season after Gary Shaw had handled in the area. Mugadza stepped up and sent Jon Worsnop in the Bradford goal the wrong way to level the scores.

The home side finished the first half with a flourish, when firstly O'Brien shot wide, and then Worsnop was at full stretch to deny a Smith half volley, and then in stoppage time, Kyriacou's header was cleared off the line; the linesman waving away appeals that the ball had crossed the line though it looked as if it had.

The start of the second half was much more of the same, and Kyriacou's shot across the face of goal was put into his own goal by Bradford's number 4 as Wakefield deservedly took the lead.

More good play by Mugadza on the right wing, and a good ball back to him from Shields put him clean through, but his powerful shot was straight at Worsnop.

It was 2-2 half way through the second half when a controversial free kick was whipped in and Wakefield failed to deal with a back post header which went in off the post.

Both sides had chances to win the game, but Shields' shot was just wide, and the returning Emley legend Mark Wilson, now at Bradford, shot well over from 25 yards.

Team: Woods, Macquarrie, Fawcus, Stoker, Normaschild, Battye, O'Brien, Shields, Smith, Mugadza, Kyriacou.
Subs not used: Townsend, Kendall and Stevenson.

Apr 7th Restructuring

On Tuesday 3rd April the Football Association issued the following statement on their restructuring of the game at UniBond League First Division level –

“The Football Association today confirmed that the planned expansion of Step 4of the National League System to incorporate an additional division of the Northern Premier League will proceed in time for the 2007 / 2008 season.

The revised structure will see the Northern Premier League operating with two First Divisions each comprising initially eighteen clubs. The additional Division will require a further twelve clubs to move up from current Step 5 leagues with the North West Counties, Northern Counties East and Midlands Football Alliance each providing a minimum of three clubs. The Northern League will also provide two clubs with both Durham City and Newcastle Blue Star both committed to moving up the National League structure.

Although the Northern Premier League had been pressing for two Divisions of 20 clubs they are happy to accept the 18 club Division as a means of putting the new structure in place. National League System manager Mike Appleby commented that he was happy with the outcome “The decision means that the restructure at Steps 1 to 4 will now be complete and in place for next season. The decision to go with eighteen clubs means there should be limited, if any, impact on the Southern League who remain against any mass movement of clubs from their current Step 4 Midland Division. Now that this phase of the restructure has been agreed we can now look forward and begin a review of the Step 5,6 and 7 competitions”.

Northern Premier League Chairman Peter Maude said “The League is of the opinion that the decision raises questions that can only be answered when the constituent member clubs are known which isn’t expected to be until early May. The League will not be making any further statement until that time”.
Apr 6th  Belper Town v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield were deservedly beaten by Belper after a poor game of football at Christchurch Meadow.

Wakefield named an unchanged side from the one that drew at home to Ossett Albion in midweek, apart from Niall O'Brien coming into the side in place of player manager Gareth Stoker who dropped to the bench.

Belper started strongly and were in front inside four minutes when James Tevendale picked the ball up on the edge of the 18 yard box and poked it into the bottom corner past Andy Woods.

Belper continued to be the stronger side. Andy Rushbury sent a glancing header inches over on 11 minutes and five minutes later Rushbury again had a good chance to score but volleyed over when well placed to the right hand side of the area.

Ben Hardy had Wakefield's first chance on 18 minutes but volleyed well wide of the goal after turning inside a defender.

On 25 minutes Damien Henderson laid the ball off to Marc Townsend after O'Brien's long throw but Townsend dragged his shot well wide.

Tevendale should have increased the score on 29 minutes as he burst clear of the Wakefield defence but his finish was very tame and the ball rolled harmlessly into the grateful arms of Woods.

Wakefield made a double substitution on 32 minutes, Brighton Mugadza and Townsend being replaced by Stoker and Darrell Kendall in a desperate attempt to change the game but Belper continued to be the better side.

On 38 minutes Tevendale had another great opportunity to add to the score when he was left with a free header at the far post from Sean Gummer's right wing free kick but the Belper striker headed wide.

Wakefield were slightly better in the second half as Belper seemed happy to be a goal in front but could still not create many clear cut chances.

On 53 minutes Darren Schofield's header from a dangerous corner kick was hacked off the goalline by Chris Fawcus.

A minute later Hardy found his in between two defenders and shot at goal from 15 yards but his goalbound effort unfortunately struck a defender on the edge of the six yard area.

Belper were always dangerous from their excellent deliveries from crosses and it was no surprise that it was a cross that led to their second goal on 66 minutes. Another superb delivery from the right was headed home by Krystof Kotylo.

Wakefield tried in vain to get back into the match. On 71 minutes Belper goalkeeper Adam Ogden flapped at Fawcus' deep ball in and the ball found its way through to Neil Smith at the farpost. Smith got a good contact on the ball with his head but couldn't direct his attempt at goal and the ball flew wide.

On 77 minutes a Stoker corner was met by Henderson, who had been thrown forward in an attempt to get back into the game, but his glancing header bounced just wide of the goal.

Four minutes from time Hardy picked the ball up in a dangerous area, took a touch and shot at goal but again the shot was dragged well wide.

Wakefield will need to put in a much improved performance on Easter Monday if they are to get anything from promotion chasing Bradford Park Avenue who are the visitors to College Grove.

Report by Phil Rann

Belper completed their second 2-0 win over Wakefield this season after a deserved victory at Christchurch Meadow on Friday afternoon. Belper scored their first in the fourth minute, and could have added to it on a number of occasions in a first half where Wakefield saw very little of the ball, but because of woeful finishing, they were still in the match for the second half.

The second half was better from a Wakefield point of view; Ben Hardy's fine run and goalbound shot was blocked by a defender, and then the same player got in behind but lashed the ball wide when well placed.

Belper made it 2-0 twenty minutes from the end, and that pretty much ended the match.

Damien Henderson headed just wide just before the end, but Belper deserved their three points.

Apr 3rd Wakefield v Ossett Albion
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield came from behind to draw with near neighbours and play-off hopefuls Ossett Albion at College Grove.

Wakefield named an unchanged side from the one that beat Skelmersdale United at the weekend. Ossett Albion dropped star striker Danny Toronczak to the bench for the game.

Ossett had a great chance to take the lead in only the third minute. David Dickinson easily beat Damien Henderson for speed but his attempted finish was well saved by the legs of Andy Woods in the Wakefield goal.

Wakefield began to come into the game more and Ben Hardy was unlucky to see his shot flash just wide on the 15 minute mark after the ball fell nicely for him in the area.

On 23 minutes Andy Shields sent in a powerful volley that was beaten out by Ossett stopper Neil Bennett. The rebound fell to Marc Townsend six yards out but he put the ball over the crossbar from a difficult headed chance.

Brighton Mugadza ran clear down the right wing on 34 minutes, beating the offside trap, and sent over a low cross. Townsend got to the ball but didn't get a good contact, the ball rolling harmlessly to Bennett with Hardy stood in an excellent position behind Townsend.

The second half continued in a similar fashion to the first, the game been evenly fought out but Wakefield always looking the more likely to score.~
On 49 minutes Neil Smith ran clear down the right but drove the ball over the bar from 15 yards.

Wakefield's only corner of the game on 57 minutes led to Henderson getting in front of his marker but heading inches over from six yards after Mugadza's superb delivery.

A minute later the visitors were in front. Martin Allison charged inbetween the Wakefield defenders before unleashing an unstoppable finish into the bottom corner past Woods.

Wakefield came back at Ossett immediately, Hardy rounding Bennett on 61 minutes but being forced wide. His cross come shot back across goal flew agonisingly in between the arriving Smith and the open net and away to safety.

The equaliser came on 78 minutes. Mugadza's beautiful through ball was superbly taken down by Hardy for him to take the ball a yard past a defender. His next touch saw him hit a sweet finish that flew past Bennett and into the bottom corner.

Both sides then seemed satisfied with a draw, both seemed to be looking for a winning goal but also looked nervous and failed to create clear cut chances in the closing moments.

Mar 31st Wakefield v Skelmersdale
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield continued their recent good form as they came from behind to beat Skelmersdale at College Grove and close the gap between themselves and fourth bottom Warrington Town to only one point.

During the first half, both sides failed to create many goalscoring chances. Skelmersdale went ahead on 33 minutes with a goal out of nothing as McNally's 25 yard volley dipped viciously, goalkeeper Woods getting a good hand to the ball but only managing to push it into the corner of the net. Osman burst through for Skelmersdale on 39 minutes, with the Wakefield defenders appealing for offside, but could only tamely toe poke the ball straight into the grateful arms of Woods.

Wakefield began to come into the game more at the end of the first half, as  Normaschild diverted Mugadza's near post corner wide of the goal on 44 minutes. The equaliser came in the last minute of the first half. Henderson won a free kick 25 yards out and picked himself up to drive the ball into the bottom corner direct from the set piece.
There was still time for Wakefield to almost get a second goal before half time. Stoker's deep free kick was diverted goalwards and McCormick in the visitors goal managed to claw the ball out from underneath the crossbar.

Three minutes into the second half Wakefield did find the second goal. A Skelmersdale free kick was headed against his own man by a Skelmersdale player and Wakefield broke swiftly, a superb passing move releasing Ben Hardy who made no mistake as he slotted the ball past McCormick.

Skelmersdale were back level on 57 minutes. The ball bounced up horribly in the Wakefield penalty area and struck the arm of the unlucky Stoker, the referee pointing straight to the penalty spot. Osman found the corner with a well taken penalty, despite Woods guessing the right way.

Wakefield were back in front ten minutes later. A Mugadza corner was poorly punched by McCormick in a strong wind and turned into the net by Darren Kendall on the goalline in what was his first touch after coming on as a substitute. Three minutes later Smith was put clean through on goal by Hardy and finished well but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Six minutes from time Skelmersdale nearly equalised again but Woods was in good form to block Byrne's close range effort from a tight angle.

Wakefield always looked more likely to get a fourth goal than Skelmersdale did to get an equaliser and got their just reward two minutes from time. A superb through ball by Kendall put Ben Hardy in on goal and he again kept his composure well to find the net.Hardy had a superb chance for his hat trick on 89 minutes as he ran clear once more. He did the hard work in rounding goalkeeper McCormick but somehow only found the post from inside the six yard area.

Osman saw a lobbed effort drop just wide of the post for Skelmersdale in stoppage time but they could not find any more goals and Wakefield saw the game out well to seal the win. Skelmersdale were also reduced to ten men in the closing moments as captain Douglas was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Mar 27th Wakefield v Chorley
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield gained revenge for their 3 - 0 defeat at Chorley just three days earlier by comfortably beating their Lancastrian opponents at College Grove and moving within four points of fourth bottom Warrington Town in the league table.

The win sees Wakefield increase the gap between themselves and the bottom two sides to eleven points.

Wakefield made one change to the side that lost at Chorley with Ben Hardy moving up from the substitutes bench to replace Bobby Stevenson in midfield, with Marc Townsend taking Hardy's place on the bench.

Wakefield started the game well, the first chance falling to centre back Declan Normaschild following Brighton Mugadza's 7th minute corner, but he dragged his shot wide from a good position 10 yards out.

On 11 minutes the excellent Kyriacou stuck a post with a lobbed effort that had Phil Priestley well beaten in the Chorley goal. The ball rebounded out to Neil Smith who hit a first time shot goalwards from close range but unfortunately the ball struck Priestley and was diverted over the crossbar.

Kyriacou again threatened two minutes later with a shot on the turn after Gareth Stoker's deep free kick but the ball flew straight into the grateful arms of Priestley.

Mugadza curled a free kick straight at Priestley from 25 yards on 14 minutes as Chorley struggled to cope with the wave of Wakefield attacks.

For all Wakefield's good play they were almost undone on 22 minutes with Chorley's first real attempt of the game. Daivd Moore arrived unmarked and somehow managed to miss the target with an easy chance from six yards.

Chorley had settled down and for 15 minutes contained Wakefield's attacking play more effectively but then the home side upped the pace once more.

On 33 minutes Ben Hardy's low shot from an impossible angle was saved by the legs of Priestley on the goalline. Kyriacou's follow up attempt was headed off the line by a defender as Chorley still managed to somehow keep Wakefield out.

Three minutes later the opening goal finally arrived. Mugadza's corner again caused the Chorley defence all kinds of problems. Damien Henderson was able to take the ball down at the far post before firing it back across the face of the goal.
Stoker was in the right place six yards out to turn the ball in.

Chorley were gifted an equaliser by Wakefield only a minute later. Normaschild took out a Chorley player in the penalty area and the referee had no option but to point to the spot. Adam Roscoe stepped up and placed his penalty straight down the middle, with Andy Woods already committed to a dive to his left hand side, and the scores were back level.

Wakefield came straight back at Chorley once more. On 41 minutes Kyriacou's powerful header from Hardy's cross was brilliantly saved by Priestley.

Then in first half injury time Wakefield went back in front. Priestley again saved well to push out Kyriacou's header after a Mugadza corner. The ball dropped nicely for Henderson who diverted his header into the net at the far post from a tight angle.

Wakefield started the second half brightly. Smith hooked a first time shot wide after Kyriacou's low right wing cross on 48 minutes. The third goal came out of nothing on 54 minutes. Chorley goalkeeper Priestley never moved as Smith hit a 35 yard volley past him. The ball bounced once before going into the net off the inside of the post.

Chorley had another chance to get back into the game when they were awarded a penalty on 61 minutes. Roscoe again stepped up and again tried to hit the ball straight down the middle. Woods was ready for it this time though and saved well with his legs. A Chorley player following up placed the ball into the net but the goal was disallowed for encroachment.

Andy Shields almost made it four with a superb first time shot on 69 minutes but the ball flew straight at Priestley.

Chorley enjoyed much more possession in the final twenty minutes but Wakefield defended well. Normaschild was well placed to block a shot in the six yard area and appeals for a third penalty were waved away by the referee after the ball struck a Wakefield player full in the face.

Wakefield were reduced to ten men in the 90th minute when Smith was sent off for a second bookable offence for kicking the ball away after he had been flagged offside. Smith had only been booked five minutes earlier for jumping with his elbow out.

Kyriacou had an injury time chance to add a fourth goal after turning inside a Chorley defender but fired just wide of the target.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield deservedly beat Chorley at College Grove on Tuesday evening to extend the gap between the two sides back to eleven points. Gareth Stoker made one change from Saturday with Ben Hardy replacing Bobby Stevenson, with Marc Townsend coming on to the bench after his recent injury.

Wakefield first threatened after ten minutes but Demi Kyriacou's attempted lob from the edge of the area bounced back off the post and Chorley keeper Phil Priestley saved Neil Smith's follow up shot.

Kyriacou almost opened the scoring again seconds later when his turn and shot hit Priestley who would have been beaten if it had been anywhere else in the goal.

Chorley's first chance came halfway through the first half when their number 9 volleyed well wide when it seemed easier to score.

Kyriacou was soon in the action again and this time his shot beat Priestley again and the post, but this time not the covering defender on the line who hacked the ball away.

Wakefield took the lead after 34 minutes through Stoker after a scramble in the Chorley six yard area.

Within three minutes it was 1-1 after Wakefield gave a penalty away for the third match running, and Roscoe made no mistake for the second match in succession to level the scores.

A Brighton Mugadza corner just before half time was met by Kyriacou, but his header was very well kept out by Priestley.

Wakefield retook the lead in first half stoppage time from another corner, after Declan Normaschild's header had been saved by Priestley, Damien Henderson headed home at the near post to send Wakefield in at the break in the lead.

The second half started with more of the same with almost all the action in the Chorley half, and Smith's first time shot rolled harmlessly wide of the goal.

His next effort though put Wakefield 3-1 ahead, and those fans that missed his 40 yard lob at Skelmersdale last week had a chance to see it again as Priestley could only turn and watch the ball disappear into the bulging net.

On the hour mark, Chorley were awarded a second penalty which seemed to baffle players and supporters alike, and justice seemed to be done when Woods saved Roscoe's effort and the follow up was ruled out for encroching.

Andy Shields almost made it four with a long range effort on 68 minutes but Priestley got fully behind the shot.

Chorley began to enjoy more possession in the last twenty minutes but didn't really take advantage until a shot was blocked by Normaschild in the six yard box, and then appeals for a third penalty were waved away after the ball struck a Wakefield defender in the face.

The only sour part of the evening from a Wakefield point of view was the sending off of Neil Smith for two bookings, the first from a stray elbow from a jump which Chorley didn't appeal for, and the second from kicking the ball away. The referee ignored the pleas for common sense and to add an extra minute onto the end of the match and sent Smith off for what has to be the softest sending off in the league this season.

Kyriacou shot wide in stoppage time as Wakefield comfortably held out.

Mar 24th Chorley v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield lost their first away match of 2007 after been well beaten by lowly Chorley at Victory Park.

Wakefield were the first to threaten the scores on 6 minutes. Brighton Mugadza turned inside but shot straight at Chorley stopper Phil Priestley.

The opening goal came on 11 minutes. Adam Roscoe was left with a free header on the edge of the 18 yard box following a corner, and headed the ball on to David Moore who headed in from close range.

Wakefield almost equalised two minutes later. Mugadza fed Andy Shields down the left who attempted to lob the ball into the net with Priestley stranded in no mans land. The shot was too weak however and a Chorley defender got back to head the ball off the line.

Chorley nearly added a second right on half time but found Andy Woods in excellent form, the Wakefield goalkeeper tipping Jordan Goodeve's 25 yard drive round the post at full stretch.

Wakefield's play looked desperate at times and they failed to take a hold on the game. Chances fell to Damien Henderson on 50 minutes and Demi Kyriacou on 58 minutes but both failed to get a good connection on their shots.

The visitors best chance of the second half fell to substitute Darrell Kendall on 74 minutes but he volleyed wide from six yards when it looked easier to score.

Chorley hit back with Moore forcing a good tip over from Woods on 76 minutes.

The second goal came from the penalty spot four minutes from time. Chris Fawcus' lunging challenge gave away the spot kick and Roscoe made no mistake, sending Woods the wrong way.

Kendall had the ball in the net for Wakefield on 88 minutes but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Then in injury time Chorley added further to the score when Roscoe lobbed Woods on the edge of the penalty area for his second goal of the game.

Phil Rann Report

Wakefield's run of wins and unbeaten away record in 2007 came to an abrupt end at Victory Park as Chorley won 3-0 to close the gap between the two sides to eight points.

Chorley were ahead inside the first eleven minutes with a header from a corner, resulting from poor marking and will go down as a sloppy goal to concede from Wakefield's point of view.

The away side however, were almost level less than five minutes later, when Andy Shields' well placed effort beat the keeper but not the defender on the line as Chorley kept hold of the lead.

In the second half, Demi Kyriacou shot wide after good work from Brighton Mugadza, and then substitute Darrell Kendall chested down and shot wide when well placed with his first touch.

At the other end, Andy Woods made two fine tip overs to keep the score at 1-0.

Chorley survived a large penalty shout after the defender seemed to stop the ball going through with his outstretched arm.

A penalty instead was doled out at the other end after Roscoe was fouled by Chris Fawcus, and Roscoe dusted himself down and sent Woods the wrong way to effectively end the contest.

Kendall did have the ball in the net to set up a grandstand finish, but this time it was the linesman's turn to deny Wakefield, saying he was offside, a decision that seemed to baffle both sets of fans.

In stoppage time, it was 3-0 when Roscoe headed over Woods who was in no-mans land on the edge of his own area, and it could have been four but Woods pushed a shot onto the post.

Mar 20th Skelmersdale United v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield remain unbeaten on the road in 2007 after a superb away victory at Skelmersdale.

Wakefield started brightly with Andy Shields seeing his shot deflected wide following Brighton Mugadza's lay off on 7 minutes.

It was Shields again who threatened the scoreline on 24 minutes, with his shot this time being charged down following Mugadza's corner.

Two minutes later Wakefield took a deserved lead with a spectacular goal. In form Neil Smith picked the ball up 40 yards from goal and, spotting Terry McCormick off his line, sent an audacious lob sailing over the Skelmersdale goalkeeper and into the net.

Seven minutes later it was all square. Skelmersdale were awarded a penalty after a player was dragged down in the area and Craig Noone tucked it away into the bottom corner, giving Andy Woods no chance.

Wakefield should have had a penalty themselves before half time after a clear handball a good yard inside the Skelmersdale penalty area, but the referee somehow thought that the offence had taken place outside the area and only a free kick was awarded.

In the second half Skelmersdale enjoyed long periods of possession but without managing to get many shots in on goal. Their best chance fell to captain Mark Byrne as he waltzed through the Wakefield defence on 78 minutes but shot just wide.

Wakefield got the winning goal five minutes from time. Substitute Darrell Kendall was put in on goal and coolly slotted the ball past McCormick to register his first goal for the Wakefield first team.

Wakefield saw out a couple of nervy moments in the last few minutes as Carl Osman headed over for Skelmersdale from 6 yards on 87 minutes and an almighty scramble in the Wakefield penalty area deep into injury time ended with the ball flying inches wide of the post, after Woods had pulled off a tremendous save from point blank range and the Wakefield defenders had put in a couple of superb blocks to deny the home side.

Mar 17th Wakefield v Gresley Rovers
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield earned their first home victory of 2007 after a deserved win against a lacklustre Gresley side.

The score was goalless at half time following a poor 45 minutes of football in which both sides struggled to create chances in a game spoilt by a strong wind.

In the second half Wakefield, playing with the wind at their backs, dominated proceedings throughout. The home side thought they had taken the lead on 54 minutes but Demi Kyriacou's header following a corner was harshly ruled out for a foul on Gresley goalkeeper David Clarke.

In form striker Neil Smith hooked wide following Bobby Stevenson's header on before the goal finally came on 59 minutes. Brighton Mugadza showed superb skill to turn a defender before exchanging passes with Rob MacQuarrie, turning inside, and firing an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

The goal brought Mugadza to life. Four minutes later his cross found Smith who had time to take a touch but put the ball inches wide of the far post. On 65 minutes Mugadza showed outstanding skill to bring the ball down and his volley on the turn whistled milimetres over the crossbar.

Wakefield continued to create chances. Andy Shields low cross on 82 minutes found Kyriacou but his low shot was well pushed round the post by Clarke. The resulting corner was dummied by Kyriacou and the ball carried on to Smith but he fired straight at Clarke.

On 84 minutes a Damien Henderson punt up field sent Mugadza racing clear but his first time shot flew wide of the target.
Three minutes before the end Shields found space to shoot from long range but found Clarke in superb form once more to pull off an excellent save.

Gresley rarely threatened the Wakefield defence as the game finished with no further addition to the score.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield won their second game in a row for the first time since October and also their picked up their first win at College Grove in 2007 after beating Gresley Rovers 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was ruined by the strong wind and three abysmal officials but the second half was much more entertaining.

The home side had the ball in the net just ten minutes into the second period from a Demi Kyriacou header but the referee disallowed it for a foul on the keeper in what looked a 50/50 ball.

It didn't take long before Wakefield were in front though, with Rob Macquarrie and Brighton Mugadza linking up brilliantly on the right wing, before Mugadza ran inside and shot past the Gresley keeper into the corner with his left foot, one of the team goals of the season.

Mugadza was now the key to every Wakefield attack, and his deep cross set up Neil Smith but his left foot effort rolled inches wide of the far post as the score remained 1-0.

A minute later, Kyriacou set up Mugadza, who turned expertly, and sent a first time volley rocketing just over the cross bar.

Substitute Ben Hardy almost set up the second goal with his first touches of the ball, running at the defence and laying it to Andy Shields, but his shot was straight at the keeper. And then Kyriacou himself had an effort which was well tipped wide.

A well worked Wakefield corner set up Smith but the keeper was in the right place at the right time, and a minute later, Mugadza was sent clear one-on-one by Shields but his well struck shot was wide of the far post with Smith and Hardy both well placed.

Shields had a run and 25 yard effort well tipped wide by the keeper as Wakefield finished the game the stronger.

Gresley's only chance of the second half came on 81 minutes when Andy Woods missed a long throw, but their number 9 headed wide when well placed.

Mar 13th Rossendale United v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield are still yet to lose away from College Grove in 2007 after Neil Smith's late winner earned them all three points at Dark Lane.

Chances were missed at both ends in an entertaining first half of football. Rossendale's Neil Zarac drilled a fourth minute shot just wide and team mate Euan Purcell's first time shot in the seventh minute was well claimed by Andy Woods low to his left.

At the other end Andy Shields turned inside and fired into the side netting a minute later and then on 13 minutes Demi Kyriacou burst through but was forced wide and his attempted finish was saved by the legs of Chris Thompson in the home goal.

Kyriacou turned well on 26 minutes to power away from the Rossendale defenders. As he entered the penalty area he was dispossesed and the ball broke to Shields who crashed the ball against the crossbar from 20 yards.

The game continued to provide goalscoring chances in the second half but it was always Wakefield who looked the more likely to score with the Rossendale players struggling to pick out team mates in the Wakefield penalty area despite numerous balls into the box.

On 65 minutes Declan Normaschild outjumped Thompson but his header fell just wide of the post with the goal unguarded.

The Wakefield goal came in the last minute of the game. A deep free kick bobbled in the penalty area. The ball looked like it was Thompson's to claim, but he hesitated and a defender lashed it away from in front of him. The ball fell to Neil Smith who calmly slotted the ball into the open goal to send the visitors away happy.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield continued their run of not being beaten on the road in 2007 with a well deserved victory against Rossendale Utd after a battling performance at Dark Lane.

One change from the side that lost against Warrington Town on Saturday saw Bobby Stevenson replace Ben Hardy, and Darrell Kendall slotted in on the bench alongside Andy Battye and Wayne Anderson.

An entertaining first half saw both sides create chances, and firstly Andy Shields hit the side netting after a good piece of skill, and then at the other end, Andy Woods twice had to be alert to keep the score at 0-0 after two crosses caused problems in the Wakefield penalty area.

On 27 minutes, Wakefield's Demi Kyriacou was fouled inside the area, but the referee rightly played advantage as they still had possession, but Shields' well struck effort cannonned back off the crossbar.

Good interplay between Rob Macquarrie and Gareth Stoker set up Kyriacou but his shot was wide, with Bobby Stevenson only a few inches away from deflecting the ball into the corner of the net.

Wakefield had a good chance eight minutes into the second half from a Chris Fawcus free kick. Declan Normaschild beat the Rossendale keeper to the ball, but his header just went the wrong side of the post.

Rossendale enjoyed long spells of possession without creating any clear cut chances, but Wakefield always looked quick and dangerous on the break. Neil Smith's shot from a break after a Rossendale corner was well over.

Wakefield won a free kick 35 yards out with three minutes remaining. Fawcus whipped it in and Kendall, with his first touch, flicked the ball on, and it looked like the danger had ended but the Rossendale defender ignored the shout of his goalkeeper and attempted to clear the ball into touch. Smith was in the way however, and he diverted the ball into the empty net to put Wakefield in front.

A Rossendale free kick in stoppage time flew just wide of the post and Wakefield hung on to collect three much needed, and well deserved points.

Mar 10th Wakefield v Warrington
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield are still without a home point this year after being beaten by Warrington at College Grove. Their latest defeat at home leaves them eleven points adrift of Warrington in the league table.

Wakefield made three changes to the team that drew at Ossett Albion a fortnight ago. Player manager Gareth Stoker returned to the side in place of the suspended Niall O'Brien and new signing Neil Smith started in place of the injured Steve Kenworthy. The other change saw Brighton Mugadza start with Marc Townsend yet to recover from a broken nose sustained at Ossett.

Wakefield enjoyed the better of the first half chances but could not find the back of the net. Mugadza saw his low drive pushed away by Warrington goalkeeper Karl Wills on 19 minutes and Damien Henderson headed the resulting corner over after it had been flicked on.

New signing Smith saw a left foot shot fly just wide on 29 minutes and four minutes later he was put clean through on goal and tried a 20 yard drive that was in the end easy for Wills and maybe should have taken the ball on further.

Wakefield were punished by the clinical finishing of Graeme Mitchell six minutes before half time. The Warrington centre forward was left with the time to take a touch and drilled the ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

Wakefield almost snatched an equaliser a minute before the break after Ben Hardy had exchanged passes with Smith. The lively winger's attempted shot was saved by Wills with his legs. Hardy followed up but Wills again pulled off a good save with his legs and the danger was cleared.

Warrington scored their second goal three minutes into the second half. Phil Howard got the wrong side of Hardy to slot the ball past Andy Woods from close range, with Wakefield appealing for offside.

Wakefield tried to get back into the game and threw on substitutes Wayne Anderson and Bobby Stevenson. They pulled a goal back on 71 minutes when a Demi Kyriacou pull back found Smith who slid the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

Wakefield continued to press and got men forward but could not find an equaliser. Their best chances fell to Stoker and Kyriacou late on in the game but both failed to find the target with headers.

Two defensive errors were enough to send Wakefield to another home defeat against Warrington Town. The home side had had the better of the play before a mistake by Damien Henderson allowed Mitchell to fire home from 20 yards giving Andy Woods no chance.

Wakefield were almost back on level terms in first half stoppage time but the Warrington keeper made a fine double save from Ben Hardy as Warrington took their lead into the break.

Three minutes after half time, it was 2-0 when Howard stayed onside at the back post, rounded Hardy and poked the ball past Woods at his near post.

Wakefield continued to create chances, and first Henderson headed well over before a goalmouth scramble from a corner was just wide of getting the home side back in the match.

Eventually, debut striker Neil Smith, formerly of Leigh RMI, scored his first Wakefield goal from a Gareth Stoker corner with a shot from the outside of his boot.

Wakefield huffed and puffed but couldn't find the all important second goal. The closest they came was a one-on-one chance for Stoker but the defender reacted well and cleared the ball away.

This defeat gives Warrington an eleven point advantage over Wakefield but they have played three games more. Chorley also won, and they are now just two points behind but have also played three games more but Wakefield and Chorley still have each other to play twice.

Team: Woods, Macquarrie, Fawcus, Stoker, Normaschild, Henderson, Hardy (Anderson 75), Shields, Smith, Mugadza (Stevenson 56), Kyriacou.
Sub not used: Battye.

Attendance: 85

MOM: Shields

This result continues Wakefield's miserable run of losing every home match in 2007. However, on the plus side, they have not yet lost an away match this calender year.

Feb 24th Ossett Albion v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield made it four away games undefeated after a well earned away point at local rivals Ossett Albion in a match from which they could have easily come away with all three.

The visitors had the better of the early play with a Ben Hardy drive being beaten away by Neil Bennett on 4 minutes and a Demi Kyriacou shot on the turn flying just over on 7 minutes.

Wakefield were forced into an early change on 16 minutes when Marc Townsend collided horribly with Bennett. The referee unbelievably allowed play to continue with Townsend laid out, blood pouring from his face. When the ball was finally kicked out, Brighton Mugadza came on to replace Townsend, who went to hospital with a broken nose and possibly fractures to his cheekbone and eyesocket.

The Wakefield goal came on 29 minutes. Steve Kenworthy put Hardy clear down the right. His low cross skidded through the penalty area to Kyriacou who stroked the ball goalwards from 10 yards. The ball just made it over the line before Bennett got down to it, the referee's assistant correctly signalling a goal.

Wakefield continued to pose a threat to Ossett with Niall O'Brien's deep cross being met by the head of Kyriacou but Bennett did well to push the ball out from under the crossbar.

Ossett then had a better spell and forced an equaliser two minutes into first half injury time. Danny Toronczak got the wrong side of Damien Henderson and neatly stroked the ball past Andy Woods.

The home side enjoyed a good start to the second half. Toronczak burst past Henderson on 46 minutes but shot straight at Woods in the best of their chances.

Wakefield then began to once again get on top of the game and with the chances they created could have easily gone on to win it.

On 50 minutes the ball bobbled through to Hardy to leave him with a clear sight of goal but he chose to shoot first time and the ball flew straight into Bennett's arms.

Kyriacou got the better of David Syers on 66 minutes to burst into the penalty area from the left wing and fired inches wide of the Ossett goal with only Bennett to beat.

Hardy then ran through on goal on 70 minutes but fired straight at Bennett from close range after cutting inside from the right wing.

Wakefield could not find a way through. On 81 minutes Mugadza's low cross was just too far in front of Hardy sliding in at the far post and the ball continued its path to run just the wrong side of the net.

Mugadza pulled a late chance well wide as Ossett hung on and the game finished in a draw.

Phil Rann's report

Wakefield picked up a well deserved away point at neighbours Ossett Albion and it could have been even better with great chances especially in the second half.

Brighton Mugadza scored the Wakefield goal, but Mugadza himself was a substitute, replacing Marc Townsend, who came off worse with the Ossett Albion goalkeeper and a broken nose, early in the first half. Mugadza's shot was too much for the goalkeeper who took it over the line after good play from Ben Hardy and Steve Kenworthy.

Kenworthy, sharp from his two goals in midweek, was running every Wakefield attacking move, and he set up Hardy but his shot was straight at the keeper.

Ossett equalised in first half stoppage time when a long ball saw Danny Toronczak get the wrong side of Damien Henderson, and he slotted the ball coolly past Andy Woods in the Wakefield goal.

Ossett came out stronger after half time but rarely threatened Woods' goal as he didn't have any tough saves to make. The best chances were been created at the other end, where Mugadza fired wide, and then Kenworthy robbed the Ossett left back and set up Hardy, whose shot was well saved, and then Kyriacou's magnificent run past two defenders and shot was only just the wrong side of the far post.

Ossett forced a late free kick but Wakefield held out to claim a well earned point.

Feb 20th Gresley Rovers v Wakefield Unibond Presidents Cup semi final
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield progressed through to the final of the President's Cup after an emphatic, well earned victory at fellow first division side Gresley Rovers.

Wakefield were still without Chris Fawcus through illness for the match with player manager Gareth Stoker still not fully fit. In two changes from the side that were beaten by Bamber Bridge on Saturday, Andy Battye started in place of Chris Collinson and recent signing Andy Shields came into the side for Brighton Mugadza.

Gresley were the first to threaten on 5 minutes when Liam Hebberd burst away from the Wakefield defence down the right hand side but his shot from 15 yards was easy for Andy Woods to handle in the Wakefield goal.

Wakefield always looked dangerous from set pieces. On 13 minutes Damien Henderson's free kick was deflected, taking the sting out of the shot and allowing goalkeeper Tom Whittle to make a simple save.

Ben Hardy was next to threaten the Gresley goal on 26 minutes. His first time shot from 20 yards was deflected inches wide of the post.

Five minutes later Niall O'Brien's long throw in was flicked on by Declan Normaschild. Steve Kenworthy followed up with a hard low shot that was well saved by Whittle low down to his right.

Hebberd whistled a shot just wide for Gresley on 35 minutes before Wakefield's best chance of the half fell to Hardy two minutes later. Hardy was put through by Marc Townsend and avoided a challenge well before unleashing a rasping goalbound effort that was excellently saved by Whittle to keep the scores goalless.

Gresley were the first to score on 61 minutes. A deep free kick was met by Matthew Millns who headed home powerfully. Woods got a hand to the ball but couldn't prevent it from continuing into the net.

Hardy sent another long range effort millimetres wide on 67 minutes before the equaliser came two minutes later.

Normaschild got up well to meet an O'Brien long throw, his header bouncing past Whittle and striking the inside of the far post. As the ball rolled along the line, Steve Kenworthy was the first to get to it, forcing it home well under pressure.

Gresley came straight back at Wakefield. On 71 minutes Paul Edwards powerful effort was superbly parried away by Woods who was in excellent form in the visitors goal.

Wakefield always looked capable of scoring again. On 76 minutes a Townsend shot was blocked by Tom Groves inside the six yard box with Whittle stranded on the edge of the 18 yard area.

Nine minutes from time Wakefield scored the winning goal. Another O'Brien long throw was headed out to Kenworthy who sent a powerful volley goalwards from 20 yards. The ball rocketed off the inside of the post and into the net with Whittle rooted to the spot.

A couple of nervy moments ensued for Wakefield but they held out pretty well. Barry Woolley sent a header just over from a corner in injury time but that was as close as Gresley came.

Wakefield almost scored again in the dying moments but Hardy's low drove from the right wing area was pushed round the post by Whittle.

Wakefield now meet Buxton in the final. The date and venue has yet to be decided
upon.

Feb 17th  Wakefield v Bamber Bridge
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield fell to their fourth straight home defeat after losing by a single goal against Bamber Bridge at College Grove.

Bamber started strongly, creating goalscoring chances. Alex Porter hit a free kick straight at Andy Woods, Steve Brown couldn't find a finish after skipping two challenges and Steve Williams shot on the turn was badly directed as they wasted good opportunities inside the first ten minutes.

Neil Spencer then just failed to get on the end of a low cross at the far post and Ryan Salmon's shot was well charged down by Declan Normaschild.

Wakefield began to settle down in the latter part of the first half. On 26 minutes Brighton Mugadza's head down was passed to Marc Townsend by Ben Hardy but Townsend thrashed the ball well over from a difficult position.

Three minutes later Mugadza's corner was met by Demi Kyriacou but his hooked shot was deflected wide.

Ten minutes before the break Townsend latched onto a deep free kick but his volley didn't cause Graham Bennett much cause for concern in the Bamber goal.

Bamber began to get back on top again with Danny Mahoney, Salmon, Jamie Nay and Brown all coming close in the last few minutes of the first half.

The only goal of the game came in the 53rd minute. Mike Fletcher, who was lucky to be on the field after getting away with only a yellow card after clearly throwing a punch moments earlier, eventually forced the ball home from six yards after Woods had made an excellent initial save from point blank range.

Wakefield were gifted a chance to equalise when Hardy was brought down in the penalty area with 25 minutes left, but Townsend placed the penalty wide of the post.

Wakefield could not find a way through as hard as they tried. Hardy saw one long range effort saved and another deflected wide with Bennett stranded as the game ticked into the final fifteen minutes.

Substitute Adam Tong waltzed through but shot straight at Woods at the other end as Bamber were always looking to break to try and find the second goal.

Goalscorer Fletcher was then dismissed for Bamber for a second bookable offence with eleven minutes remaining but still Wakefield could not find the net.

Damien Henderson sent a 25 yard free kick inches wide with Bennett beaten and Darrell Kendall used his strength to turn inside but screwed his shot wide of the near post.

In injury time Andy Battye, Townsend and Henderson all saw their shots blocked after an almighty melee in the Bamber penalty area as Bamber survived the five minutes of time added on to ensure their victory.

               Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield did everything but score as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Bamber Bridge
at College Grove on Saturday afternoon.

Damien Henderson and Ben Hardy returned to the starting line-up after being ineligible
in midweek, while Chris Fawcus was missing through suspension.

The first half was a dull affair with neither side testing the other team's goalkeeper, but
the second half was much more action packed.

Bamber Bridge's number 6, Fletcher, was lucky to remain on the field after clashing
with Wakefield's Demi Kyriacou as he seemed to raise his arms above Kyriacou's neck,
but only a yellow card was given. It was understandable then, that when Fletcher put
the away side ahead barely five minutes later, the home players, officials and
                    supporters felt aggrieved.

Fletcher received another final warning after a very late foul on Niall O'Brien, while
Ben Hardy's strong run into the penalty area won Wakefield a penalty when he was
fouled. Marc Townsend stepped up but placed the ball wide of the left hand post.

Wakefield knew it wasn't their day when a Mugadza header from a poor goalkeeper
clearance found the net but was ruled out for offside despite the fact that neither
Townsend or Kyriacou touched the ball nor were interfering.

Fletcher was eventually sent off soon after following another clash with O'Brien
               who was also booked.

A Damien Henderson thunderbolt free kick was inches away from an equaliser,
while with the next attack, three Wakefield shots from inside the penalty area were
all blocked, and with the last chance of the match, substitute Darrell Kendall chose
the wrong option to shoot with Kyriacou free at the back post.

Feb 13th Wakefield v Guiseley West Riding County Cup 3rd Round
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield were defeated by Premier Division side Guiseley in the West Riding Cup in a game of few goalscoring chances at a wet College Grove.

The opening goal came on nine minutes. Sam Denton's ball forward flicked off the head of Niall O'Brien, who was unaware that goalkeeper Andy Woods had come to try and claim the ball, and into the open net, despite the best attempts of Declan Normaschild on the goalline to try and clear the ball.

Wakefield were restricted to two shots from Steve Kenworthy that were easy for Steve Dickinson until just before half time when they began to threaten.

On 42 minutes Brighton Mugadza curled a left wing free kick just wide and a minute before the break Marc Townsend stabbed just wide after Mugadza's corner had bobbled around in the penalty area.

Three minutes into the second half Guiseley extended their lead. Mark Bett burst clear down the left before beating Woods with a superb finish that nestled just inside the far post.

Wakefield failed to create goalscoring chances despite containing their higher league opponents fairly well over the remainder of the game.

Guiseley could have extended their lead by Rob Pell blazed over from close range and saw his 35 yard drive pushed wide by Woods after it had skimmed off the grass dangerously in front of the Wakefield goalkeeper.

Report by Phil Rann

Guiseley progressed to play Bradford Park Avenue in the semi-finals of the West Riding County Cup after a 2-0 win over Wakefield at College Grove on Tuesday night.

Wakefield will be disappointed that they could not convert their majority of possession, especially in the first half, into goals as Guiseley showed their league superiority with goals instead of missed chances at the other end.

The home side gifted Guiseley the lead inside the first ten minutes when a routine free kick was headed past his own keeper by Andy Battye despite the efforts of Declan Normaschild on the line.

Wakefield played better football as the first half wore on, and firstly Marc Townsend shot just wide, while Brighton Mugadza's thunderbolt from a free kick flew beyond the far post after excellent link up play between Steve Kenworthy and Demi Kyriacou originally to win the free kick.

Guiseley doubled their lead five minutes into the second half through Mark Bett after exchanging passes with former W-Emley man Robert Pell.

Wakefield had lots of possession in the second half but failed to trouble the Guiseley keeper, while at the other end, Andy Woods watched a Pell effort creep just over the bar.

Feb 3rd Eastwood Town v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield earned a deserved victory at high flying Eastwood after putting in a superb, well disciplined performance at Coronation Park.

Wakefield were without player manager Gareth Stoker who missed the game through injury and centre back Declan Normaschild who served a one match suspension.

The first Wakefield chance came in the 19th minute. Marc Townsend nipped in behind the home defence and beat Eastwood goalkeeper Ian Deakin to the ball but his attempted finish rebounded off Deakin to safety.

Four minutes later a superb flowing move ended with Demi Kyriacou's byline delivery being powerfully headed just over the crossbar by Steve Kenworthy.

Wakefield continued to contain Eastwood well in the second half. Captain Peter Knox blazed well over the home side and Kyriacou got in front of Deakin but headed over the bar for Wakefield early on in the half.

Midway through the second half Wakefield scored the only goal of the game. Matt McKenzie upended Townsend with a two footed challenge and the referee had no hesitation in awarding Wakefield their first penalty of the season. Townsend stepped up and kept his nerve to coolly slot the ball home.

Eastwood could find little response. Lindon Meikle flashed the ball just over the bar from 20 yards for the hosts and their best chance fell to Knox eight minutes from time but he placed his shot into the side netting when through on goal after Eastwood had broken away from a Wakefield corner.

Wakefield had chances to extend their lead but Kenworthy dragged his shot wide after Kyriacou's lay off and substitute Brighton Mugadza fired well over the cross bar with a clear sight on goal from 15 yards.

Wakefield v Eastwood Town
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield fell to a heavy home defeat after making several defensive errors in a scrappy game of football.

Wakefield started fairly brightly with Brighton Mugadza testing Ian Deakin with a
hard drive after Damien Henderson's knock down in a crowded penalty area in the
               twelfth minute.

Eastwood took the lead on 35 minutes when Gary Shaw's chipped free kick
somehow found its way past Andy Woods after no one picked up the run of an
               Eastwood player.

A minute before the break Wakefield almost equalised but Henderson's point blank
range shot struck a defender in another crowded penalty area after Mugadza's
               corner.

Two minutes into the second half substitute Marc Townsend had a chance to bring
Wakefield back into the game but blazed over from a tight angle after goalkeeper
and defender had collided to leave the net unguarded.

On 49 minutes Eastwood doubled their advantage as Peter Knox raced clear of the
defence to coolly slot the ball past Woods.

The third goal came on 63 minutes. A deep free kick was misjudged by Declan
Normaschild and the ball bounced over him for Knox to be left to nod it home from
               close range.

On 72 minutes Eastwood wrapped the game up when Deon Meikle bundled the ball
over the line after a Woods mis-kick had led to an unnecessary Eastwood corner.

Jan 20th Warrington Town v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield had to settle for a point despite being in front for the majority of the game at Warrington.

Wakefield begun with new signings Ben Hardy, Damien Henderson and Rob McQuarrie all in the starting line up. The influential Marc Townsend missed the game through suspension.

The visitors took the lead in the tenth minute. Demi Kyriacou challenged for a high ball with Warrington goalkeeper Richard Mottram and won, the ball bouncing into the empty net.

Mottram was left laid out in the penalty for several minutes before eventually leaving the field on a stretcher. Luckily for Warrington they had a reserve goalkeeper on the substitutes bench, Karl Wills, who came on to replace Mottram.

Wakefield had chances to increase their lead in the first half. Steve Kenworthy saw a snapshot hacked clear off the goalline and had a dipping drive tipped over by Wills.

Warrington's best first half chances fell to Grahame Mitchell, who could only muster a tame effort that went straight at Andy Woods when in acres of space, and Gary Jenson who blazed over from close range when it looked easier to score.

In the second half Warrington came at Wakefield, managing to get in behind their defence on a couple of occasions.

Jenson raced clear but lofted the ball over both the onrushing Woods and the crossbar on 51 minutes and a minute later Phil Howard's hard drive was tipped over by Woods.

Wakefield still looked dangerous when they attacked however, and Hardy came close with a shot that whistled just wide following a bursting run on 55 minutes.

The game then became more scrappy and just as it looked like it was going to end in a one nil victory Warrington were awarded a penalty when Declan Normaschild upended an opponent on the edge of the penalty area. The offence looked to be committed outside the area but the referee pointed to the spot and dismissed Normaschild for a second bookable offence. Graeme Mitchell stepped up to slot the ball home.

Three minutes later Wakefield were back in front with a similar finish to their second goal as their first. A Brighton Mugadza corner was headed back across goal by the huge centre half Henderson for Kyriacou to again get above the goalkeeper to head the ball in. Again the goalkeeper was left laid on the floor but this time was able to continue.

Four minutes from the end Warrington snatched an equaliser when substitute Paul Rogers peeled away from his marker to direct a header into the bottom corner.

Despite five minutes of injury time being played, neither side was able to find a winning goal.

Jan 6th Wakefield v Cammell Laird
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield welcomed back new player manager Gareth Stoker into the starting line up for the visit of merseysiders Cammell Laird. Demi Kyriacou was suspended but there was a place on the bench for Ben Cressey who is nearing fitness after a lengthy spell on the sidelines injured.

Cammell Laird controlled the first half for long periods and almost took the lead on 11 minutes. Ronnie Morgan's cross found Ian Cooke unmarked at the far post but his header struck the crossbar. A minute later Michael Cole's shot on the turn was well saved by Woods.

On 29 minutes Morgan had another great chance to put Cammell Laird in front after battling his way through to leave himself one on one with Andy Woods, but Woods got down well to save with his legs and the follow up shot was deflected wide.

Wakefield's best chance of the first half was a Brighton Mugadza free kick on 36 minutes which was well tipped over by Peter Cookes in the Cammell Laird goal.

The visitors took the lead nine minutes into the second half following a mistake by Andy Battye. Battye's slip left Morgan one on one with Woods and this time the Cammell Laird dangerman made no mistake, slotting the ball coolly past Woods into the bottom corner.

Wakefield equalised on the hour out of the blue. A Mugadza corner was met by Marc Townsend who had got in front of his marker to power a header into the net.

Wakefield then began to have better spells of possession and matched Cammell Laird in all areas of the field.

On 68 minutes Cammell Laird substitute James McCoy hit the post with a fine first time effort.

Wakefield then had several excellent chances. A Declan Normaschild goalbound header struck Townsend and flew over the bar on 71 minutes, substitute Darrell Kendall's curling 25 yard shot was pushed onto the crossbar by Cookes and Steve Kenworthy's low cross was mishit by Kendall from only six yards out and the ball rolled straight into the arms of the greatful Cookes.

Cammell Laird also had chances with McCoy denied by Woods with a low close range shot with four minutes remaining and James McGuire blazing over from 12 yards when it looked easier to score.

The visitors winning goal came as the match ticked into injury time. A good move down the right hand side led to Morgan heading home his second goal from close range.

Report by Phil Rann

Cammell Laird stole all three points at College Grove on Saturday afternoon in an entertaining league clash.

The visitors started much the better side, and Ian Cooke should have put them ahead inside the first ten minutes with a free header six yards out but it only hit the crossbar and went over. Andy Woods was forced into a good save down to his left side with the next attack as Cammell Laird started to dominate.

Wakefield began to come into the game after twenty minutes, and Niall O'Brien's header was just wide from a deep Brighton Mugadza free-kick.

Down at the other end, Cammell Laird should have gone ahead on 32 minutes but Woods was at his best, making a fine double save from Morgan.

Wakefield almost took an unlikely lead five minutes before half time from a free kick just outside the area, but Cammell Laird keeper Peter Cookes saved well from Mugadza.

Cammell Laird went ahead eight minutes into the second half after a mix-up between Chris Collinson and Andy Battye let in Morgan who waltzed past Woods and placed the ball into the net.

Wakefield however, were back on level terms on the hour mark when a sweetly struck Mugadza corner was finished by a Marc Townsend bullet header which gave Cookes no chance.

Cammell Laird almost went back in front only ten minutes later, but substitute Aaron Rey's shot from 20 yards hit the outside of the Wakefield post and went wide.

At the other end, Wakefield substitute Darrell Kendall put through Steve Kenworthy but a bad first touch let the defenders get back to him, and with the next attack, Kendall's 25 yards shot was tipped onto the bar by Cookes and the ball agonisingly rolled over.

Wakefield had a let off four minutes from time when this time McGuire hoofed the ball well over the goal from eight yards after good work on the right by Morgan.

Morgan was to have the last laugh however when he latched onto a cross from the right-hand side and bundled the ball over the line in stoppage time.

Jan 3rd Statement on internal changes at Wakefield FC

After being involved in the team management for the past 4 years Paul David has handed over the reins to Gareth Stoker who joined the club in October as player coach.

Paul has been with the club for the last 16 years as a player, assistant manager, joint manager, manager and will now join the board to offer his wealth of experience in trying to guide the club back into the higher echelons of non league football.

The board would like to thank Paul for all the hard work he has put into the managerial position during difficult times at the club. When the club decided to move to College Grove this season Paul played his part in working with other volunteers in doing manual work at the new ground. He is no stranger to the boardroom and has been active in decision making over the last 12 months. His prime roll will be to liaise with Gareth to help to formulate a successful team.

Gareth has played the game with a number of professional clubs and expressed his ambition to venture into management when we first met back in September.

Gareth is very enthusiastic about the game, which has been seen on the field in his leadership of the players and his coaching technique. Gareth is fully aware of the mountain the club has to climb to once again challenge for honours but with a little more luck and the rub of the green more wins than losses seem to be only round the corner. Gareth will be hoping to recruit both new players and assistants to his back room staff to help achieve his and the clubs ambitions.

A depleted Wakefield side were eventually beaten by Stocksbridge at Bracken Moor after two goals in the last fifteen minutes.

Wakefield were without Demi Kyriacou and Bobby Stevenson in addition to injury victims Matthew Hoyle, Gareth Stoker and Ben Cressey.

Stocksbridge were the better side in a poor first half. On 16 minutes Andy Woods was forced into a terrific point blank save to deny Mick Goddard's header after a deep ball into the penalty area.

On 39 minutes Curtis Bernard had a low drive well saved by Woods after a battling run forward and a minute later Dave Cockerill rattled a post with a header.

Wakefield stepped up a gear in the last few moments of the first half with a good chance falling to Andy Battye after a Brighton Mugadza left wing free kick. Battye's shot with his second shot was well saved by Steve Hodgson however and the scores remained goalless.

Wakefield played a lot better in the second half but without finding an end product. On 47 minutes Niall O'Brien released Mugadza down the right but his drive shot was straight at Hodgson.

On 54 minutes Bernard had a close range shot superbly saved by Woods after a low ball in for Stocksbridge as the home side continued to create a few chances.

Wakefield broke from a Stocksbridge free kick on the hour but Mugadza's low drive was again straight at Hodgson.

With fifteen minutes to go Stocksbridge broke the deadlock. Bernard raced clear of the Wakefield defence and coolly slotted the ball past Woods.

Wakefield couldn't create any response and Stocksbridge added a lucky second with an own goal with a minute left. Ben Walker's low cross struck Paul Stoneman and flew in past a helpless Woods.

Dec 23rd  Wakefield v Clitheroe
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield moved further clear of the bottom two teams in the league after a battling victory over fellow strugglers Clitheroe.

Demi Kyriacou joined Steve Kenworthy up front for Wakefield, with Matthew Hoyle only making the bench due to a groin injury.

Recent signing Chris Collinsen made his debut at right back with Bobby Stevenson starting in midfield. Reserve team regulars Declan Normaschild, Andy Battye and Leighton Moxon all started the game for Wakefield.

Wakefield had an excellent chance to score in the third minute. Kenworthy was put in after a lovely through ball by Stevenson and was hacked down from behind as he shaped to shoot. Amazingly the referee didn't give the penalty and the score remained goalless.

Kyriacou then forced Clitheroe goalkeeper Paul Horridge into an excellent stop with an overhead kick from close range as Wakefield had the better of the first half play without getting many shots in on goal.

The closest Clitheroe came in the first half was a 25 yard drive by Neil Reynolds that was well pushed away by Andy Woods.

Wakefield finished the half strongly with Kenworthy's shot on the turn bouncing just wide and Normaschild's flick header from Niall O'Brien's long throw flying straight at Horridge.

Clitheroe started the second half brightly with Ian Johnson seeing his drive from a tight angle tipped over by Woods and Gary Bowker somehow stabbing over from close range after a deep ball in caused chaos in the Wakefield defence.

Wakefield then took more control of the game and went ahead on 66 minutes. A cross was only half cleared and the ball fell nicely for Brighton Mugadza to drive home from 15 yards.

Clitheroe had an excellent chance to equalise 12 minutes from time but substitute Chris Heslop somehow headed wide from point blank range when it seemed easier to score.

Kenworthy had a further chance on 83 minutes when he raced clear of the Clitheroe defence but his shot was weak and trickled wide.

A minute later Wakefield sealed the game with a second goal. A Mugadza corner was touched against a defender by Kyriacou and then fell to Normaschild who bundled the ball in.

Wakefield could have a thrid goal two minutes from the end when substitute Marc Townsend raced clear but Horridge came out and saved well with his legs.

Wakefield will take heart from this performance into a difficult game at Stocksbridge on Boxing Day. A clean sheet was achieved despite the absence of Paul Stoneman at the back. Battye and Normaschild did very well all afternoon and fellow reserve player Moxon never stopped running throughout the 90 minutes.

Dec 9th Harrogate Railway v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield missed out on a chance to move further away from the bottom of the UniBond First Division table after missing a hatful of good chances at Station View.

The only change to the side that drew at Bridlington Town in midweek saw defender Andy Battye coming in to replace long term injury victim Luke Farmer, with Bobby Stevenson moving into midfield and Steve Kenworthy starting the game in attack.

A superb opening 12 minutes from Wakefield saw Matthew Hoyle miss a great chance to put the visitors in front when he got stuck in the mud just eight yards out and the ball trickled harmlessly into nervy goalkeeper John McLaughlin's hands. Harrogate had already survived a goalmouth scramble at this point.

Railway settled down a bit and showed they could also threaten when Graham Marchant shot just over on 23 minutes.

On 25 minutes the less than convincing McLaughlin missed a Wakefield corner but Hoyle hooked the ball over the crossbar from a difficult position.

A minute later Andy Woods was called into action at the other end, pulling off a great save to deny Chris Howarth.

Another minute had passed when the action was back in the Railway penalty area once more. Hoyle laid the ball off to Kenworthy, but he could only find the side netting with a driven effort from 12 yards.

On 33 minutes the Railway goal was again almost found. This time a Hoyle cross was met by the boot of Demi Kyriacou but his effort was cleared off the goalline by a defender with McLaughlin beaten.

It was Wakefield's turn to head off the line six minutes before the break, Paul Stoneman completing the clearance after a good header by the dangerous looking Nathan James.

In the second half Wakefield had the better chances again, taking the game to Railway and enjoying some good possesion.

On 51 minutes Kyriacou drove just wide from a tight angle, the shot flying just inches away from Hoyle's boot.

Substitute Mark Crossfield raced clear on 56 minutes but his lobbed effort floated just over the crossbar with McLaughlin committed.

Four minutes later Kenworthy was put in by Crossfield but placed his shot inches wide of the far post as the Railway defence struggled to contain Wakefield's attacking players.

Railway were always dangerous when breaking forward however, and a minute later Scott Ryan drilled the ball just wide from an excellent position.

The action went straight back up the other end, with Hoyle racing clear for yet another one on one opportunity. This time McLaughlin came racing out and managed to make the save.

The Railway goal came on 64 minutes. Poor defending allowed Howarth to waltz past two defenders before slotting the ball coolly past Woods.

Railway almost found an undeserved second eleven minutes from the end. Marchant pulled the ball wide of an open goal after Woods had made a good save to deny Howarth.

On 82 minutes Bobby Stevenson headed a Brighton Mugadza corner a foot wide of the far post and a Crossfield header was cleared right off the goalline by a defender as it became clear it wasn't going to be Wakefield's day.

Crossfield had a further chance on 87 minutes but his shot was deflected over the crossbar and Railway held out.

Dec 5th Bridlington Town v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield were held to a draw at basement side Bridlington after conceding a dubious penalty just before half time on a poor playing surface at Queensgate.

Wakefield were without Tony Brown for the game whose back injury had flared up again. Steve Kenworthy came into the squad to replace him. Kenworthy played in midfield with Wakefield switching to a 4-4-2 formation.

The visitors should have been in front in the second minute. Luke Farmer was put clean through on goal after a long punt forward held up in the wind but his lobbed effort over goalkeeper Dane Whittleston bounced inches wide of the post.

Farmer had further chances to score. He was put through again by Brighton Mugadza but in taking the ball round the goalkeeper was forced too far wide. Then he saw a looping header from a corner pushed over the crossbar by Whittleston.

Five minutes from half time Farmer again raced clear. This time Whittleston denied him yet again, saving well with his legs.

Disaster struck for Wakefield just before the break. A free kick was powered at the helpless Mugadza, the ball striking him on the arm from close range. The referee pointed to the spot and a very harsh penalty was awarded. Kevin Smith stepped up and although Andy Woods guessed the right way and got a hand to the ball, the shot was just too powerful and the ball rolled into the corner.

Wakefield were back in the game eight minutes into the second half. A long throw from Niall O'Brien caused mayhem in the mud in the Bridlington penalty area and Farmer eventually got enough on the ball to force it in, despite the best efforts of the defender on the goalline who just couldn't stretch far enough to clear.

Bridlington almost scored straight from the restart when Phil Harrison burst through but Andy Woods pulled off a good save.

On 68 minutes Farmer, just fifteen minutes after scoring his first Wakefield goal, left the field on a stretcher after a two footed knee high challenge by Dean Douthwaite. Farmer required oxygen before been taken to hospital with damaged knee ligaments and could be out of the game for some time.

Wakefield dominated the possession during the last twenty minutes but couldn't get the ball in the net.

On 81 minutes Mugadza's quick free kick picked out Matthew Hoyle but he placed the ball over the crossbar on the stretch.

Woods was called into action three minutes from the end, tipping Smith's free kick over the bar.

Wakefield almost snatched the win in injury time when a slip by a defender left O'Brien with a clear shot on goal. Whittleston pulled off a wonderful save to turn the ball round the post and deny him and earn a point for the home side.

Dec 2nd  Wakefield v Brigg Town
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield moved out of the bottom three after a last gasp win against Brigg Town at College Grove.

Brigg started strongly and on two minutes Andy Woods was forced into action, tipping Karl Baggaley's spectacular first time volley over the cross bar.

From the corner Brigg scored a controversial opening goal. Steve Housham headed the ball in at the far post, but the referee's assistant had his flag raised for offside and Wakefield appeared to have stopped playing. The referee initially disallowed the goal before consulting with his assistant, who appeared not to have noticed Bobby Stevenson stood on the goalline, and allowing the goal to stand.

Wakefield's best chance of the first half came on 28 minutes. Luke Farmer forced his way between two defenders to latch onto a long ball forward. His initial effort was well parried by Brigg goalkeeper Damien Steer and his follow up from a difficult angle only found the side netting.

Six minutes later Wakefield found an equaliser. Brighton Mugadza's speculative shot from all of 30 yards out bounced wickedly in front of Steer, wrong footing him so all he could do was push the ball further into the goal.

In the second half, Wakefield searched more and more for the winning goal as the half went on.

On 58 minutes Paul Stoneman hit the top of the crossbar with a header from Niall O'Brien's long throw in then on 67 minutes Matthew Hoyle latched onto a short back pass but Steer saved well at his feet.

With ten minutes left Demi Kyriacou had a 20 yard volley well saved by Steer and with just four minutes remaining Hoyle missed an excellent close range chance, thrashing the ball over the bar from close range following Mugadza's quick free kick.

Three minutes into stoppage time Wakefield found the winner with the last chance of the game. Mugadza was again the creator, sending in a low cross for Hoyle to get in front of the defender and touch the ball in from close range.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield climbed out of the bottom three for the first time since August after narrowly beating Brigg Town 2-1 at College Grove.

Brigg were ahead inside two minutes when an offside decision was over-ruled by the referee and allowed to stand.

It took Wakefield a long time to settle down, but Brighton Mugadza had two well struck shots saved, and Luke Farmer struck the side netting when well placed.

Mugadza levelled things up on 35 minutes with a 20-yard shot that deceived the goalkeeper and beat him down to his right side.

The second half was much better from a Wakefield point of view, and a Niall O'Brien header from a Bobby Stevenson corner clipped the top of the bar, while O'Brien hit a fine 30 yard effort into the goal but play was brought back for a foul.

The home side, who had been denied a win by a last minute goal in their last home match against Kidsgrove, changed their fortunes when Matthew Hoyle flicked home Mugadza's cross in stoppage time.

Nov 29th Silsden v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield won through to the next round of the West Riding Cup after outclassing Silsden in the latter part of their Second Round tie.

Wakefield were dealt an early blow with the news that Niall O'Brien had pulled up injured in training, leaving them with only one substitute. O'Brien is however expected to be fit for Saturday after sitting out the match.

The early signs were good for the visitors when on 3 minutes Matthew Hoyle nipped in after a mistake by Silsden captain Michael Rosser. Hoyle's shot was wide however and flew well over the crossbar.

Two minutes later Steve Kenworthy scored his first goal of the season for Wakefield in some style. He raced clear of the Silsden defence before volleying the ball first time over Phil Rishton from the edge of the area.

Silsden began to settle down and came close on 20 minutes when Dale Hoyle's bullet header following a corner flew straight at Andy Woods.

On 36 minutes Bobby Stevenson had a great chance to make it two but his header went just over the bar after Gareth Stoker's corner.

Four minutes before half time disaster struck for the visitors. Aaron Hollindrake climbed high to beat Andy Woods to a long ball forward on the edge of the Wakefield penalty area. His flick on trickled towards the net and it was Hollindrake who was fastest to the ball to lash it in on the goalline.

Wakefield began to control the game in the second half. On 61 minutes Stoker was left with a clean shot on goal following Kenworthy's cross but he didn't connect properly and the ball was easy for the goalkeeper.

Ten minutes later Hoyle fired wide from a tight angle after turning inside and then an attempted lob by Stevenson was pushed over by Rishton at full stretch.

Rishton was again called into action on 75 minutes, pushing Stevenson's rasping drive round the post.

A minute later Wakefield found their second goal. Stevenson's corner caused mayhem in the Silsden penalty area and eventually centre back Andy Battye bundled the ball in.

On 82 minutes Hoyle again came close for Wakefield. His snapshot on the turn being well saved by Rishton low to his left.

Six minutes from time Silsden had a great chance to get back into the game. Hollindrake was left with a clear shot on goal from six yards, but Woods somehow pulled off a miraculous save to save Wakefield's day.

On 87 minutes Wakefield wrapped it up when Silsden again struggled with a Stevenson corner. This time Demi Kyriacou got in front of Rishton to power a header into the net.

Nov 22nd Harrogate Railway v Wakefield (League Cup)
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield were left to rue missed second half chances after going to down to an extra time defeat at Station View in the League Challenge Cup in a match full of action.

Railway had the better of the opening half. On 9 minutes captain Liam Gray almost opened the scoring with a thunderous 25 yard drive but Andy Woods was in fine form in the Wakefield goal, touching the ball over the crossbar.

On 18 minutes Scott Ryan flashed a far post header just wide and a minute later Graham Marchant turned inside and saw his 20 yard effort tipped over by Woods as Railway continued to threaten to open the scoring.

Wakefield almost scored a fluke goal on 22 minutes, but Luke Farmer saw his deflected cross bounce away off the top of the crossbar.

Railway did take the lead on 32 minutes. A corner kick was flicked on for Chris Howarth to head home unmarked from close range.

Two minutes later it was almost two, but Nathan James low shot whistled just past the post after Howarth's lay off.

On 35 minutes Wakefield hit the crossbar for the second time in the game, this time it was Steve Kenworthy's flick header following Ben Cressey's deep free kick that was pushed onto the bar by Railway goalkeeper John McLaughlin who went on to play a huge part in the game in the second half.

Railway started the second half fairly brightly. Three minutes in Marchant's powerful volley from six yards was miraculously kept out by Woods who managed to divert the ball over the bar by flinging himself away to his left.

Wakefield began to dominate the game and created numerous chances in the final twenty minutes of normal time.

On 70 minutes Kenworthy's driven cross was dropped by McLaughlin but Farmer just couldn't stretch far enough to hook the ball in from six yards.

A minutes later Wakefield did find an equaliser. Brighton Mugadza's corner was met by Bradshaw whose deflected shot hit the crossbar. Kenworthy headed the rebound goalwards but the defender on the line headed it clear. The ball then fell to Demi Kyriacou who drove the ball into the net from 12 yards.

Eleven minutes from time Farmer picked out Mugadza as Wakefield threatened to score again, but McLaughlin was out quickly to save well at Mugadza's feet.

On 84 minutes Mugadza turned creater setting Farmer through on goal but McLaughlin again saved well with his legs.

Three minutes later Kenworthy's close effort was somehow charged down and Wakefield simply couldn't force the ball home after the resulting melee in the penalty area.

Wakefield almost snatched a win in injury time but Bobby Stevenson's shot was excellently saved by McLaughlin after Kenworthy had broken the offside trap and pulled the ball back.

In extra time Railway began to create good chances. On 96 minutes they went back in front when a mistake by Charlie Bradshaw let in James who finished coolly past Woods.

On 102 minutes Ryan turned inside and drove the ball against the inside of the post but he didn't have to wait long to get on the scoresheet. Two minutes later he was left with a free header from close range and made no mistake.

A minute into the second half of extra time the game looked to be over when Howarth stroked home his second goal from 15 yards after Kyriacou's clearance was deflected back into his own penalty area.

Wakefield introduced Darrell Kendall who had two excellent chances to score on his first team debut. On 110 minutes he was put through on goal but McLaughlin was again in fine form.

Then on 112 minutes Kenworthy pulled the ball back to him, taking the goalkeeper out of play, but he somehow managed to hit the covering defender on the line with his attempted finish and Railway held out to move into the next round.

Nov 18th Wakefield v Kidsgrove Athletic
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield surrended a two goal lead at College Grove to only register, in the end, a disappointing draw with Kidsgrove after having much the better of the overall play throughout the match.

Wakefield were by far the better side throughout the first half. On 13 minutes new signing Luke Farmer beat the offside trap to race clear but Kidsgrove goalkeeper Matt Conkie saved well with his legs.

A minute later a mistake by Charlie Bradshaw let in the lively Michael Lennon but he put the ball well wide from 20 yards when he had time and space to take the ball further.

The opening goal came from an own goal 25 minutes into the game. Matthew Hoyle slipped the ball inside to Gareth Stoker. His shot was pushed out by Conkie but only against the unfortunate Anthony Keilthy. Keilthy's touch was enough for the ball to trickle over the line and open the scoring.

Nine minutes later it was two nil. A Niall O'Brien long throw was only half punched clear by Conkie and Demi Kyriacou was on hand to hook the ball home from close range.

On 37 minutes a Stoker corner was met by Hoyle at the near post. His header was well saved by Conkie who pushed the ball out. The ball then found its way to Kyriacou and he drove inches wide from 20 yards as Wakefield threatened to increase the scoreline.

In the second half Wakefield still looked the better side but Kidsgrove were always dangerous on the break.

On 53 minutes Hoyle turned inside but had his shot blocked by a defender. The rebound fell straight back to him but he blazed the ball well over the crossbar.

Three minutes later Hoyle should have made it three. He ran clean through on goal but his shot was well charged down by Conkie from point blank range. A minute later O'Brien's powerful volley whistled just wide of the net.

Wakefield continued to push and on 68 minutes it was Brighton Mugadza's turn to have shot. His first time drive from 30 yards was well kept out by Conkie. Another three minutes later and Mugadza turned provider, slipping the ball through to put Farmer in on goal, but the angle was too tight and Conkie was able to make another good save.

Kidsgrove pulled a goal back on 72 minutes. Wayne Brotherton's low cross found Lennon who had time to take a touch before shooting. His initial shot was well saved by Woods with his legs, but the ball fell back to Lennon who drilled it between Bradshaw's legs on the goalline and into the net.

Lennon had a chance to equalise on 78 minutes when Aiden Matranga put him in, but he lifted his attempted lob over the goal from the edge of the area.

As the game ticked into the final minute Wakefield almost scored the third goal. Again Conkie was able to save, however, as Kyriacou scuffed his shot after he had been picked out unmarked at the far post by Mugadza.

Three minutes of injury time had passed (although the referee only signalled for two) when Kidsgrove equalised. A conspicuous free kick was pumped into the penalty area for Brotherton to drill the ball home and break Wakefield's hearts.

Phil Rann's report

A combination of poor finishing, sloppy defending and dreadful refereeing decisions saw Kidsgrove grab a last-gasp point with a 94th minute equaliser; this after the referee had only given two added minutes at the end of the match.

Wakefield, fired up with new signings Tony Brown and Luke Farmer both in the starting lineup, ran riot in the first half, when firstly a Gareth Stoker cross was turned into his own net by Kidsgrove defender Anthony Keilthy with Farmer ready to score just behind him. Just eight minutes later it was 2-0 when Demi Kyriacou finished neatly from a Niall O'Brien long throw. There was time for Wakefield to create another great chance from a Stoker corner, but Matthew Hoyle's clever front post header was well saved by Kidsgrove keeper Matthew Conkie.

Conkie was at his best in the second half when he firstly denied Hoyle again with a fine stop after Farmer had put him through one-on-one, and then stopped Brighton Mugadza's well struck volley on 70 minutes.

Disaster struck for Wakefield on 73 minutes when Michael Lennon got the wrong side of Charlie Bradshaw and although Andy Woods in the Wakefield goal denied his first shot, he slid his second effort through the legs of Bradshaw on the line to give Kidsgrove hope.

And a very suspicous free kick allowed Wayne Brotherton to drive his left foot shot home with the last kick of the match after Wakefield failed to deal with the cross.

Team: Woods, Crossfield, Cressey, O'Brien, Brown, Bradshaw, Mugadza, Stoker, Farmer, Hoyle, Kyriacou.
Subs not used: Kenworthy, Fawcus and McGhan.

Attendance: 52

In all honesty, although Wakefield dominated 90% of this match, the contest should have been over long before Kidsgrove's last minute equaliser, great chances wasted throughout the second half, but the performance, especially from the midfield and two strikers was extremely encouraging.

Nov 14th Wakefield v Woodley Sports
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield fell to their second successive defeat after losing at home to Woodley Sports despite putting in a battling second half display.

Woodley's speed up front had the beating of the home defence in the first half and the visitors took the lead on 22 minutes. Danny Queeley's powerful shot was blocked by Woods but the rebound fell to Mario Sergio Daniel who made no mistake from close range.

Straight from the restart Woodley should have scored again, but Queeley drove the ball wide after rushing past the Wakefield defenders.

Wakefield did however have chances of their own. Charlie Bradshaw was inches away from connecting with a low cross and Niall O'Brien saw his 25 yard thunderbolt superbly turned round the post by Woodley goalkeeper Liam Higginbottom.

Woodley doubled their lead on 35 minutes when the ball fell to Chris Curley who was left with a simple chance from close range.

Two minutes from the break the impressive Gareth Stoker's free kick was met by Bradshaw for Wakefield but his header was just off target after he towered above the Woodley defence.

Daniel missed a further chance for Woodley a minute before half time when he stabbed the ball wide from twelve yards following a low left wing cross.

Wakefield dominated the second half as they attempted to get back into the game. A Paul Stoneman header across goal after a Stoker free kick was hacked clear from under the crossbar on 56 minutes before Wakefield did find the net six minutes later.

Substitute Brighton Mugadza took the ball past the Woodley full back and drove it into the bottom corner from a tight angle to give the home team hope.

Stoker drove over from 20 yards for Wakefield before his free kick was headed back across goal by Bradshaw for Matthew Hoyle to head just wide at the far post as Wakefield continued to pose a threat.

Wakefield almost found a lucky equaliser on 79 minutes but Mugadza's deep cross, which had left the goalkeeper stranded, bounced away off the top of the crossbar.

Woodley found a third goal to seal the victory four minutes from the end as Wakefield were caught out on the break. Luke Horrocks thunderous shot came back out off the post and following a melee in the penalty area Queeley eventually turned the ball in.

Nov 11th Alsager Town v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield slumped to defeat at Alsager Town after conceding two goals at the start of the second half. Brompton and O'Brien were both suspended whilst Farmer had returned to Hednesford.

Wakefield had the better of the chances in a first half in which they were playing with a strong wind at their backs.
On 9 minutes Gareth Stoker's curling free kick was well pushed wide by Adam Wilkes and two minutes later Matthew Hoyle had a looping header cleared off the line. Marc Townsend challenged the goalkeeper on 17 minutes and the ball fell to Hoyle but his attempt at the open goal was cleared away by Ryan Dicker who had got back to cover.

On 37 minutes Stoker's free kick again caused mayhem in the Alsager defence but Charlie Bradshaw's shot bounced just wide.

In the second half Wakefield were slow to get going and Alsager capitalised. On 46 minutes Joe Gibilru drove the ball home from the edge of the area to open the scoring. Three minutes later the lead was doubled when a low cross was turned in by Simon Eldershaw from close range.

Wakefield tried to get back in the game and created a couple of chances of their own. On 58 minutes Demi Kyriacou's header was well held by Wilkes following Stoker's cross.
Six minutes later the lead was halved. Paul Stoneman's deep cross was misjudged by Wilkes and Gareth Stoker turned the ball in at the far post.

Wakefield pressed for an equaliser but to no avail. Brighton Mugadza's 20 yard drive was deflected into the keeper's arms with 15 minutes remaining and substitute Mark Crossfield's effort from 18 yards flew over with four minutes left.

The visitors were inevitably caught on the break five minutes into injury time when Eldershaw slotted the ball home from close range to seal the victory for Alsager.

Nov 4th Wakefield v Stocksbridge PS
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield held league leaders Stocksbridge to a draw at College Grove despite playing for the majority of the match with only ten men.

Captain Paul Stoneman was dismissed for Wakefield after just six minutes. Stoneman cleanly tackled Mick Goddard but the referee still awarded a free kick. Stoneman was understandably upset at the decision and responded with an attempted headbutt and the referee had no option but to give a red card. Goddard clearly made the most of it in typical fashion, rolling around on the floor for several minutes with hardly a mark on him.

Wakefield quickly regrouped and defended solidly throughout the game, with goalkeeper Andy Woods not really been troubled.

Stocksbridge's best chance of the first half fell to Goddard on 24 minutes but his free header was directed straight at Woods.

Wakefield had chances as well with Niall O'Brien having a first time volley deflected wide on 17 minutes and Matthew Hoyle shooting straight at Steve Hodgson just before half time.

Wakefield continued to stifle Stocksbridge throughout the second half. On 58 minutes Charlie Bradshaw put the ball into the side netting at the far post following Gareth Stoker's corner with the ball just too far in front of him for him to control it properly.

The home side took the lead on 75 minutes after breaking clear from a Stocksbridge corner. A flowing move saw Marc Townsend feed Matthew Hoyle down the right. Hoyle charged down towards the penalty area before putting in a superb low cross for O'Brien to convert at the far post.

Wakefield continued to defend well but were undone by a sloppy goal on 87 minutes. Goddard's left wing free kick was forced home by captain Steve Hawes after the ball had bobbled around inside the penalty area.

Report by Phil Rann

Wakefield stretched their unbeaten run to six matches after drawing 1-1 against league leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels at College Grove.

It was always going to be a tough match against a team from the top of the table, but this tough task was not helped when after only five minutes, captain Paul Stoneman was sent off for an apparent headbutt on Stocksbridge's Mick Goddard. Wakefield fans may remember the said Goddard putting Danny Trueman out for the season last September down at Belle Vue, and he was up to his old tricks again today, when after Stoneman had fouled him on the halfway line, he left his foot in whilst Stoneman was grounded. Understandably feeling aggrieved, Stoneman reacted but never made contact with Goddard with his head. He still went down and rolled around on the floor like he was having a fit.

Although Stocksbridge now had the advantage, Wakefield were creating chances, and Marc Townsend shot straight at the keeper and Charlie Bradshaw hit the side netting from a Gareth Stoker free kick. Andy Woods in the Wakefield goal was hardly tested, and although Stocksbridge were enjoying long spells of possession, they created few clear cut chances until space opened up on the left wing, but David Cockerill didn't trouble Woods as the ball flew into the car park.

The second half was fairly even, and sloppy defending almost let in Stocksbridge but Steve Farmer was there to clear the danger. At the other end, Matthew Hoyle shot over after a Niall O'Brien long throw had caused chaos in the Stocksbridge penalty area.

Former Wakefield player Stefan Zoll, who came on as a second half substitute for Stocksbridge had a well struck shot blocked by his own player, and then chipped over with his next effort.

Another Stocksbridge attack was this time broken down by Stoker, who fed Hoyle down the right wing. After running the length of the opposition's half, and with Townsend and Demi Kyriacou waiting in the box, Hoyle expertly picked out O'Brien who was steaming in at the back post, and made no mistake, putting Wakefield in front in the 75th minute.

Stocksbridge again had more possession after the goal, but Townsend's shot was comfortably saved by Hodgson as Wakefield looked to put the game to bed.

Disaster struck for the home side just four minutes from time, when a sloppy goal was scored from a long throw-in, and now the key was to not concede again, and home players' and supporters' hearts stopped when substitute Jay Sobers volleyed just wide in injury time.

Team: Woods, Hitchen, Fawcus, Bradshaw, Farmer, Stoneman, O'Brien, Stoker, Townsend (Brompton 79), Hoyle, Kyriacou.
Subs not used: Kenworthy and Mugadza.

Attendance: 142

A piece of bad news today other than Stoneman's three match ban, which should include the next round of the Unibond Challenge Cup, is that Steve Farmer is returning to Hednesford Town after impressing for Wakefield in six appearances over the last month. Best wishes to Steve.

Oct 31st Wakefield v Ashton United
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield continued their good run of form with an excellent victory over Ashton United in the League Cup, a team from a division above them. Wakefield were missing first team regulars Andy Woods, Paul Stoneman, Steve Farmer, Matthew Hoyle, Liam Brompton and Gareth Stoker with reserve team players given a chance to shine.

The home side enjoyed the majority of the possession throughout the game. Two early chances fell to Charlie Bradshaw but the big centre half drove wide from the edge of the area on both occasions. Marc Townsend and Craig Hitchen both hooked over inside the first half hour as Ashton failed to live up to expectations given their Premier Division status.

The visitors best chance of the opening half came on 33 minutes when Steve Garvey saw his 20 yard effort drift just wide.

On 43 minutes Wakefield took a deserved lead. Niall O'Brien's long throw caused mayhem in the Ashton penalty area, Bradshaw flicked on and Demi Kyriacou finished superbly into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

In the second half Wakefield continued to control the game and Ashton were unable to create many clear chances. On 59 minutes Craig Hitchen's 20 yard drive was well saved by Lee Bracey and two minutes later Brighton Mugadza's corner was met by Kyriacou but his bullet header was headed off the line. The Wakefield players felt the ball had crossed the line, but the referee waved away their appeals.

On 65 minutes Mugadza saw his powerful drive excellently charged down and Hitchen's effort from the edge of the area fizzed just wide. Three minutes later Mugadza was inches away from increasing the lead. O'Brien's long throw in was headed out and the Wakefield winger struck a sweet half volley from 20 yards out that rocketed inches wide of the goal.

Ashton's best chance of an equaliser fell to substitute Ian Bennett five minutes from the end, but his powerful effort from 15 yards was well charged down by the Wakefield defenders. To add to their woes the visitors were reduced to ten men in the dying seconds when Michael Murray was dismissed for kicking out at Liam Brompton.

Report by Phil Rann

Who are the Premier Division side? On tonight's showing, you wouldn't have known as Wakefield fully deserved their win, and it could easily have been by a larger margin against what looked a strong Ashton lineup.

Wakefield had goalkeeper Andy Woods (back) and central defender Steve Farmer (hamstring) out injured, whilst club captain Paul Stoneman, midfielder Gareth Stoker and joint leading goalscorer Matthew Hoyle were all rested, whilst reserve team right-back Tom Thornton replaced Liam Brompton who dropped to the bench. Charlie Bradshaw played a full match at the back, and was the best man on the park. There was a place in central midfield for Craig Hitchen after his impressive display for the reserve team on Friday night, while Steve Kenworthy played alongside Marc Townsend up front. Will McGahan came on as a substitute after scoring two for the reserves against Farsley.

The winning goal came just around ten minutes from half time when Demi Kyriacou rounded off another impressive display with a goal after captain for the night Niall O'Brien's long throw-in was flicked on by Bradshaw.

Brighton Mugadza put in one or two teasing crosses from the right wing as Ashton were severely tested on a bumpy College Grove pitch.

Wakefield were perhaps more impressive in the second half, and Kyriacou was unfortunate not to double his tally when his bullet header was cleared off the line from a corner. Hitchen then shot just wide from a juicy half volley, whilst Mugadza came even closer; inches wide with the 'keeper well beaten.

Reserve team goalkeeper Matt Wright was hardly tested in the Wakefield goal but a mistake by him almost let in Ashton for a soft equaliser ten minutes from the end but Bradshaw was on hand to clear.

Kenworthy was put through one-on-one late on but just failed to reach the ball before the goalkeeper, and things started getting heated when substitute Brompton and the Ashton number 2 squared up, whilst the latter seemed to kick out and push Brompton in the face. Brompton was booked, whilst the Ashton number 2 was sent off for violent conduct to compound the visitors to more misery on their first visit to College Grove.

Team: M Wright, Thornton, Fawcus, O'Brien (McGahan 71), Cressey, Bradshaw, Kyriacou (Moxon 83), Hitchen, Townsend (Brompton 83), Kenworthy, Mugadza.

Attendance: 71

Ian Steele’s comment about Charlie Bradshaw

The game against Ashton saw Charlie’s make his full debut this season after appearing as a substitute at Buxton. The programme article about our first game against Ashton United in September 1993 showed that Charlie scored one of the goals.

My records indicate that his first game for the club (in the Emley days) was on November 25th 1991 in a President’s Cup game at Bishop Auckland and his first goal was on February 11th 1992 in a Sheffield Cup game at Denaby and Cadeby. He also scored the goal which enabled us to lift the Sheffield Cup that season against Frickley.

After leaving the club for Altincham at the end of the season he returned and made his second debut on February 13th 1993 against Winsford; one week before Paul David made his debut.

After leaving the club at the end of the 1993/94 season he returned again and made his third debut on September 7th 1999 at Blyth Spartans. He made his final full appearance on March 10th 2001 in a Sheffield Cup game against the Wetherby when he scored his final goal for the club. His final non playing substitute game was on August 27th 2001 at Gateshead.

Oct 28th Buxton v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield continued their excellent form with a hard earned point at league leaders Buxton who only got anything from the game due to a late equaliser.

The visitors were playing with the wind in the first half and had much the better of the play. Buxton threatened first however, when Mark Reed glanced a header just wide in the fifth minute.

Wakefield then began to create chances. Marc Townsend was felled in the area on 10 minutes but the referee waved away Wakefield's strong penalty claims. Seconds later space opened up for Demi Kyriacou but he dragged his 20 yard drive and the shot was easy for Scott Hartley in the Buxton goal.

On 13 minutes Townsend had a shot blocked from close range after Niall O'Brien had caused mayhem in the home penalty area with a long throw in. Then on 15 minutes Paul Stoneman met Gareth Stoker's deep cross and saw his looping header cleared off the line. Two minutes later Townsend's snapshot from 18 yards flew just over the bar and on 20 minutes O'Brien's first time volley from 25 yards flew wide, just out of reach of both Townsend and Matthew Hoyle's lunges.

Buxton went close on 21 minutes when Michael Blythen glanced a header just wide after the home side had created space for a cross down the left. Shaun Doxey's cross hit a Buxton head on 31 minutes but it was Wakefield's turn to clear off the line as O'Brien was alert to the danger to head the ball away.

Wakefield took the lead on 34 minutes in controversial fashion. Buxton goalkeeper Hartley was adjudged to have felled Hoyle just outside the area and was arguing with the referee on the edge of the 18 yard area when Townsend put the ball down and chipped the free kick into the unguarded net. The referee allowed the goal to stand and Wakefield were in front.

The second half was all Buxton as Wakefield valiantly attempted to hold out. On 56 minutes Doxey's low free kick was superbly saved by Andy Woods and Woods was agin in fine form on 67 minutes to deny Doxey once more from point blank range. Twelve minutes from time Michael Towey should have scored for Buxton but placed his header straight at Woods.

Wakefield continued to defend well and keep the ball out until disaster struck three minutes from the end. Doxey found space in the penalty area 15 yards out and drove the ball into the bottom corner to level the scores; leaving Woods with no chance

Good result against the league leaders away from home. Wakefield were much the better side in the first half, and chances fell to Marc Townsend, Demi Kyriacou and Paul Stoneman, but a combination of good saves, good fortune and a header off the line kept the score 0-0 until Townsend put the away side ahead on 34 minutes from a quick free-kick after Matthew Hoyle was fouled by the 'keeper. Buxton defenders and goalkeeper couldn't believe that the goal was allowed to stand after Townsend has received confirmation from the referee that he was allowed to take it quickly.

The second half was a very different story as Buxton had the majority of the possession which saw Wakefield camped out in their own half for much of the final half hour. Andy Woods in the Wakefield goal made two top class saves to keep out Buxton, but eventually the home side made it 1-1 just four minutes from time. It would have been cruel on Wakefield for Buxton to score a second, and although the referee played five and a half added minutes after displaying three, Wakefield survived to stretch their unbeaten run to four matches.

            Wakefield v Bridlington Town
               Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield made it three wins in a row with their first home victory and first clean sheet of the season against Bridlington Town at College Grove.

The home side took the lead on 10 minutes. Great work by Brighton Mugadza down the right saw him send over a superb cross for Marc Townsend to power home a header from close range.

Bridlington rarely threatened and Wakefield had a chance to go further ahead on 32 minutes but Townsend hooked the ball just wide from Liam Brompton's low cross.

The lead was doubled right on half time in bizarre fashion. A deep cross from Mugadza looped over Nick Tudor in the Bridlington goal and struck the inside of the far post. The ball then rebounded against Tudor's arm and fell into the open net.

Bridlington never really got going, although 10 minutes into the second half substitute Drew McCoubrey did get clear of the Wakefield defence but Andy Woods pulled off an excellent save.

On 67 minutes Wakefield sealed the game. Townsend ran clean through on goal, beating the off side trap, but his attempted finish was well saved by Tudor. The rebound fell straight to the feet of Demi Kyriacou who coolly chipped the ball over Tudor, who was well out of position, and into the net.

Four minutes later Matthew Hoyle was put through down the middle but his shot was deflected wide for a corner as Wakefield looked more likely to increase their lead than Bridlington did to equalise.

On 84 minutes Kyriacou burst past the defence and turned inside, but his shot was charged down by the recovering defender.

Luck was on Wakefield's side three minutes from time when a 25 yard Bridlington free kick deflected off a defender, struck the inside of the post and bounced straight into the grateful arms of Woods.

Gareth Stoker had an excellent chance to make it four in the dying minutes, but his 20 yard drive from Hoyle's lay off flew just wide of the post.

Wakefield are likely to have a much more difficult task on Saturday when they travel to high flying Buxton, who have only lost one league game all season.

Wakefield FC made it three wins in three consecutive matches after beating Bridlington Town 3-0 at College Grove tonight.

Goals from Marc Townsend and Brighton Mugadza in the first half were followed up by a goal from Demi Kyriacou in the second half, though the winning margin could have been by more than three goals.

               Goole v Wakefield
               Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield continued their good run of form with their second successive league victory after coming from behind once again to win at Goole.

Wakefield put out an unchanged side from the one that won 2-1 at Brigg Town in midweek.

Goole took the lead in the eighth minute. Sloppy defending by Ben Cressey allowed Dean Lackie to nip in and tuck the ball away past Andy Woods from close range.

Wakefield began to take control of the game. On 18 minutes Chris Fawcus' corner was met by Marc Townsend, but the ball was at a difficult height for him and he directed it straight at Chris Hill in the Goole net.

The equaliser came on 25 minutes. A long throw in by Niall O'Brien was only half punched clear by Hill and Liam Brompton lifted the ball into the goal from 12 yards out.

Goole were limited to long range efforts on goal. On the half hour mark Andrew Jackson volleyed straight at Andy Woods, but Wakefield continued to have the better of the play.

The home side had their best spell in the first ten minutes of the second half but failed to break Wakefield down and the visitors then once again took control.

On 58 minutes Wakefield were almost in front as a Goole defender's header glanced against the face of his own crossbar.

Gareth Stoker's free kick on 73 minutes found Townsend unmarked at the far post, but the angle was just too tight for him and he headed wide.

A minute later Wakefield were in front, O'Brien's long throw once again leading to a goal. A defender and goalkeeper got in each other's way and the ball fell to Demi Kyriacou whose close range shot struck the foot of a post. The rebound fell nicely for Matthew Hoyle who tucked it away from close range.

On 79 minutes Wakefield scored their third goal. Gareth Stoker's corner wasn't dealt with by the Goole defence and Hoyle climbed highest to glance a header into the roof of the net.

Goole were almost back in the game straight from the restart, as a defensive header by a Wakefield defender looped over Woods who had come to collect the ball, but luckily bounced just wide of the goal.

Eight minutes from time a long crossfield ball put Fawcus clean through on goal but he drove into the side netting from close range.

Goole failed to create any chances in the late stages as Wakefield held out comfortably to move another place up the UniBond First Division table.

Report by Phil Rann

Absolutely excellent performance today, and thats not just two poor sides and we were marginally better, we would have beaten any side in our league with that performance today. Every player gave 100% to be first to every ball, win every challenge, get stuck in, and most of all, put Goole under pressure in every part of the field.

It didn't look like it was going to be a happy afternoon when Goole went ahead inside ten minutes after a mix-up between Andy Woods and Ben Cressey allowed Lackie to put the home side ahead after Wakefield had made an impressive start to the match.

The lead lasted less then 15 minutes when a loose ball from a corner fell to Liam Brompton, who made no mistake; placing the ball over the downed 'keeper to make it 1-1.

Wakefield were having the better of the chances but were not causing the Goole goalkeeper too many problems. However, when they did put him under pressure, he was not comfortable at all. A poor backpass almost allowed Matthew Hoyle to pounce but the referee intervened after he had adjudged Hoyle had used a high foot in challenging for the ball.

Goole started the second half much the stronger team, but similar to Wakefield in the first half, they failed to test Woods in the Wakefield goal.

The final half hour of the game was almost controlled by Wakefield as they pushed for a second away win in four days. Goole almost pressed the self-destruct button when a header from a Goole defender hit their own bar from a corner, and Gareth Stoker's free-kick from out wide was inches wide of finding the corner.

Another corner on 75 minutes saw Demi Kyriacou hit the post, but fortunately the ball fell to Hoyle who made no mistake as Wakefield took the lead.

Five minutes later it was 3-1 when Hoyle struck again, again from a set piece after the goalkeeper had flapped the ball from a corner. The last touch was from a defender who tried in vain to head the ball off the line.

Wakefield were still the better side, and it could have been 4-1 when Chris Fawcus was put through on goal by substitute Steve Kenworthy, but his shot only found the side netting.

Kenworthy himself was put through minutes later, but was hauled down by the last Goole defender. The referee and linesman gave nothing to the sheer astonishment of everyone in the ground.

Last nights victory at Brigg Town was our first League win since February 11th when we won 1 - 0 at Guiseley.

Since then we had a league record of:

Played 23 Won 0 Draw 4 Lost 19 Goals For 10 Against 50

In that period our only victories were against
Mar 8th South Kirkby Colliery H 2 - 1 (SHSC)
Sep 2nd Dunston FB H 3 - 2 FA Cup
Sep 16th Chester Le Street A 1 - 0 FA Cup

As we came from behind to win a league game I have checked the last time this occured:

Oct 8th 2005 AFC Telford United A - we won 3 - 2 after being 0 - 2 down

Last night therefore ended a run of 42 league games since we had achieved such a victory.

Looking at the teamsheet before the start of the game Bob and I both commented that it looked strong on paper and at last we were feeling confident that we had a team that should be able to compete.

The recent away displays at Gresley, Warrington, Clitheroe and now Brigg have all be good and we could have got something out of all of them
Oct 18th Brigg Town v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield moved off the bottom of the UniBond First Division after a deserved first win of the season at Brigg. There were three changes to the side that started against Colwyn Bay. Ben Cressey and Marc Townsend were now both fully fit and replaced Steve Kenworthy and Craig Hitchen and Brighton Mugadza dropped to the bench to make way for Demi Kyriacou in a starting eleven which took on an experimental 3-5-2 wing back formation for the game.

Brigg took the lead on 13 minutes. A low cross somehow evaded two Wakefield defenders to find itself to Stuart Ainsley who was left totally unmarked. He had time and space to take a touch before slotting the ball past Andy Woods.

The home side always looked vulnerable at the back and Wakefield began to cause a threat. On 17 minutes poor defending allowed Marc Townsend to nip in but he chipped the ball just wide from the edge of the area with Damien Steer well off his line.

Woods was called into action for Wakefield on 28 minutes. Ainsley sent in a crashing drive from the edge of the area, but the Wakefield goalkeeper pulled off a tremendous save to push the ball wide.

On 36 minutes Liam Brompton had a long range drive tipped over and two minutes later Townsend's shot was charged down after Steer had pulled off an excellent save to deny Gareth Stoker from close range as Wakefield continued to create chances.

The second half started slowly, but Wakefield soon began to create chances again.

On 55 minutes an almighty scramble in the box ensued after a free kick was headed back across goal but Wakefield couldn't force the ball in.

Brigg won a free kick on 68 minutes and Craig Stones missed a great chance to increase their lead, heading wide from close range.

Wakefield eventually found their equaliser on 72 minutes. Steve Farmer's long punt forward found Townsend in between the two Brigg centre backs. He was able to take a touch before lobbing the ball over the onrushing Steer into the unguarded net.

The second Wakefield goal came four minutes from time. Townsend again found himself in possession just outside the penalty area. He took the ball past the last Brigg defender before driving it into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

Brigg failed to breakdown Wakefield in the closing moments and the visitors held on to pick up their first win of the season.

Oct 14th Wakefield v Colwyn Bay
Report by Dan Brownhill

Colwyn Bay came from behind to defeat Wakefield at College Grove as the hosts once again failed to pick up any home points. Wakefield were without Greg Challender (ankle strain) and Marc Townsend (shoulder) from the side that drew at Clitheroe in midweek. They were replaced in the starting eleven by new signing Steven Farmer and Craig Hitchen.

Wakefield were almost gifted a fluke goal as early as the third minute. An attempted punch clear by Colwyn Bay goalkeeper Ryan Brookfield rebounded against his own defender and hit the outside of the post. On nine minutes Wakefield took the lead. A chipped free kick from just outside the area was headed in by Matthew Hoyle off the inside of the post. The defender on the line managed to clear the ball but the referee's assistant ruled that it had just crossed the line and the goal was awarded.

On 31 minutes another chance fell to Hoyle, but he sliced just wide from 20 yards after Brighton Mugadza's lay off. Disaster struck for Wakefield in first half injury time. A harsh free kick was awarded to Colwyn Bay 25 yards out and John Boardman stepped up to superbly curl the ball into the top corner.

Two minutes into the second half Wakefield thought they were back in front when Hoyle raced clear and slotted the ball home. However, the assistant referee had his flag raised and the goal was disallowed for offside, from what looked to be a very tough call.

Six minutes later Colwyn Bay took the lead at the other end. Darren Wright was allowed time and space to cut inside and drive an excellent shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards. The lead was almost increased on 57 minutes, but Kenny Burgess saw his close range header brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by Andy Woods.

Liam Brompton was put through on goal for Wakefield on 65 minutes but seemed to rush his shot and the ball flew well wide of the goal. Lewis Callaghan should have increased Colwyn Bay's lead on 72 minutes. Steve Hussey's pull back was met by Callaghan just six yards out but he somehow managed to blaze the ball well over the crossbar.

A minute later Wakefield had a chance to equalise as full back Chris Fawcus raced clear of the defence. Again he seemed to rush his shot somewhat and the ball flew comfortably into Brookfield's arms. Wakefield struggled to create chances against a Colwyn Bay side that enjoyed the majority of the possession. The closest they came to an equaliser in the closing period was on 83 minutes when Demi Kyriacou's downward header was hacked clear off the line by a defender.

Phil Rann's report

Pretty much the same old story, only this week we took the lead instead of falling behind, Matthew Hoyle scoring in his third consecutive match from a header. Colwyn Bay had lots of possession but few clear cut chances until they equalised right on the stroke of half time from a free-kick.

Ten minutes into the second half, it was 2-1 to Colwyn Bay, and although Wakefield huffed and puffed, they couldn't force an equaliser although they did have an effort cleared off the line late on.

Team: Woods, Hitchen, Fawcus, O'Brien, Farmer, Stoneman, Brompton (Kyriacou 64), Stoker, Hoyle, Kenworthy, Mugadza.
Subs Not Used: Moxon and Townsend.

Attendance: 68 (all at Ossett Albion?)

Oct 10th Clitheroe v Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield earned their first point of the season after putting in a good performance against ten man Clitheroe.

Wakefield were without Ben Cressey and Richard Carrington from the side that lost at Warrington Town last Saturday as both were absent injured. New signing Gareth Stoker and the returning Marc Townsend both started in their place.

The visitors had the better chances from the first half, but were let down by wayward finishing.

On 11 minutes, Greg Challender sent a free kick high over the bar and two minutes later Stoker dragged his shot wide after Brighton Mugadza had pulled the ball back to him on the edge of the area.

Clitheroe showed they were capable of creating chances on 16 minutes when Owen Roberts' 25 yard free kick struck the woodwork.

On 26 minutes Wakefield were almost gifted the lead. Clitheroe goalkeeper Alan Fitzpatrick came rushing out but failed to be first to the ball. Mugadza picked the ball up and tried to chip it in from 25 yards, but the defender on the line was able to head clear. The resulting rebound was pulled wide by Hoyle from a difficult angle.

Three minutes later it was Mugadza again who forced an attempt on goal, his driving run taking him to the edge of the area before he flashed a shot just wide.

Clitheroe were then reduced to ten men as Will Exton was dismissed after picking up two bookings in as many minutes. Neither booking could really be argued with as both were for very late challenges.

Home captain Simon Garner fired in a 35 yard piledriver on 39 minutes that Andy Woods in the Wakefield goal managed to get down well to and push away.

A fumble by Fitzpatrick right on half time again nearly gifted Wakefield a goal after a Niall O'Brien long throw but Steve Kenworthy's hooked effort from a difficult position floated over the crossbar.

In the early period of the second half Clitheroe were the better side. Woods was forced into a point blank range save from substitute Paul Lamb on 48 minutes after the ball fell kindly for Lamb in the box.

Five minutes later the home side were in front. Woods made an initial great save to deny Lamb once more but James Dean was on hand to put the rebound home from close range.

On 63 minutes Danny Highley's wayward shot from 20 yards flew well wide as Wakefield struggled to get the ball up to their front men. In the last ten minutes, however, they sprung into life.

On 81 minutes Mugadza picked the ball up down the right hand side after making a driving run into the box and drove the ball hard and low towards goal. Unfortunately for Wakefield the ball struck the base of the near post. A defender attempted a clearance but sliced the ball straight up in the air. Hoyle managed to get his head to the ball amongst a melee of defenders but couldn't direct his header and the ball bounced wide.

Clitheroe were always dangerous on the break and on 84 minutes Ian Johnson broke clear down the right but his shot flashed wide of the far post.

A minute later Fitzpatrick was forced into action at the other end. Demi Kyriacou laid the ball off to Kenworthy on the edge of the area and his powerful drive was well tipped over by the Clitheroe goalkeeper.

The resulting corner was cleared but Stoker was able to lift the ball back into the danger area. The ball fell to Hoyle who thrashed the ball into the goal from close range. Fitzpatrick managed to get his body to the ball, but it rebounded off him into the roof of the net.

Lamb had a chance to win it for Clitheroe in the last minute as he raced clear but his shot was weak and Woods was able to get down and make a comfortable save.

Oct 7th Warrington Town v Wakefield
FA Trophy Peliminary Round
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield bowed out of the FA Trophy at the first hurdle despite twice coming from behind to equalise at Warrington Town.

There were two changes to the eleven that started against Shepshed Dynamo with new signing Richard Carrington and Steve Kenworthy coming into the side and Demi Kyriacou and Joe Howson missing out.

Brighton Mugadza had two early chances for the visitors but missed the target with both when in space.

Warrington took the lead on 25 minutes. A deep cross from Kevin Hannon drifted over Wakefield goalkeeper Andy Woods and went in off the far post in what was the home side's only attempt on target in the first half.

Wakefield played much better in the second half, showing a lot of spirit and determination.

On 47 minutes Matthew Hoyle's excellent through ball found Steve Kenworthy one on one with Richard Mottram in the home goal, but the defender behind him knoced him off balance as he shot and Mottram was able to gather comfortably.

Captain Paul Stoneman curled a free kick just wide on 50 minutes and Carrington sliced wide after Hoyle's lay off on 56 minutes as Wakefield continued to create chances.

Hoyle's attempted chip on the hour was comfortable for Mottram and Greg Challender hooked over from close range on 68 minutes after Niall O'Brien's long throw in had been flicked on.

The equaliser came on 70 minutes. A deep free kick by Liam Brompton was met by O'Brien at the far post who looped his header over the badly placed Mottram and into the goal.

Two minutes later disaster struck for Wakefield as they found themselves behind once more. The ball rebounded off two defenders to fall nicely for Hannon who was left with an easy chance from close range.

Warrington had a chance to extend their lead on 76 minutes, but substitute Simon Burton's header was well tipped over by Woods.

With a minute left Wakefield thought they had forced a replay. O'Brien's long throw was met by Hoyle on the edge of the six yard box and his looping header found the net, just inside the far post, to level the scores once more.

However, deep into injury time a corner kick caused problems in the Wakefield penalty area and Challender was penalised for a clear push. Burton sent Woods the wrong way from the spot to put Warrington through to face Clitheroe in the next round.

Oct 3rd Wakefield v Shepshed Dynamo
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield made it eleven league defeats from eleven games played after their latest set-back against Shepshed Dynamo.

Wakefield were without Steve Kenworthy who was ill, but welcomed back Matthew Hoyle and Liam Brompton who were both cup-tied for the FA Cup game at Farsley Celtic. Danny Highley dropped to the substitutes bench.

Shepshed almost raced into a first minute lead, but Royce Turville's close range effort was well blocked by Andy Woods. The visitors did take the lead on 19 minutes. Captain Andy Bourne nipped in following a free kick to put the ball home.

A minute later Wakefield almost equalised. Liam Brompton broke down the right and smashed the ball against the inside of the post from the edge of the area.

Luck was against Wakefield once more however, as Shepshed raced straight back up the field and scored their second goal, Darryl Thomas beating Paul Stoneman for pace before slotting the ball past Woods. On 26 minutes Thomas had a chance to extend Shepshed's lead but headed over from Bourne's cross when well placed.

Wakefield's first attempt on target came on 29 minutes. Hoyle picked up Chris Fawcus' low cross but his shot on the turn was easy for Jonathan Noon in the away goal. Shepshed were reduced to ten men on 34 minutes. Thomas received his marching orders after lashing out at Greg Challender after he had been fouled.

Wakefield tried in vain to get back into the game in the second half. On 47 minutes Brighton Mugadza's corner was headed towards goal by Niall O'Brien but Noon pulled off a good stop to push the ball away on the goalline. On the hour Challender hooked just over after Mugadza's corner had only been palmed clear by Noon and four minutes later Stoneman headed just wide from another corner.

On 68 minutes the referee made it ten against ten after dismissing Ben Cressey for a second bookable offence, only minutes after his first booking. Wakefield continued to try and create chances. On 77 minutes O'Brien's long throw was flicked on by Stoneman but Demi Kyriacou's ambitious overhead kick went wide.

Joe Howson drove wide from 30 yards with four minutes remaining but Wakefield couldn't find a breakthrough and the game ended in defeat once more.

Sep 30th Farsley Celtic v  Wakefield (FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round)
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield bowed out of the FA Cup Sponsored by e.on at Conference North neighbours Farsley Celtic despite putting in a battling display against opponents who failed to live up to their pre match expectations.

Wakefield were without Matthew Hoyle and Liam Brompton (both cuptied), Adam Oldham (returned to Worksop Town) and Marc Townsend (shoulder) from the side that lost 2-1 at Gresley Rovers on Tuesday night. Coming into the side were reserve team player Joe Howson, Demi Kyricaou returning from injury and Danny Highley and Steve Kenworthy who both started on the substitutes bench at Gresley.

Farsley first threatened on 7 minutes. A lunge by Niall O'Brien let in Gareth Grant but he curled his shot wide. On 20 minutes Grant turned provider, feeding Damien Reeves, but the latter's curling shot was well pushed over by Wakefield goalkeeper Andy Woods.

On 21 minutes James Knowles drifted through and placed the ball wide when well placed and then 6 minutes later a Reeves header from close range was well grasped by Woods as Farsley continued to create chances, despite failing to take a firm hold on the game.

A further chance before half time fell to Roy Stamer but he drove wide after Ryan Crossley had laid off a free kick.

Farsley should have taken the lead in the first minute of the second half, but Reeves curled his shot wide.

The closest Wakefield came was on 54 minutes, when Brighton Mugadza put in a curling effort on goal from 20 yards out but it was well saved by Tom Morgan.

Farsley final registered a goal on 58 minutes. A corner caused mayhem in the Wakefield box and Crossley eventually managed to force the ball over the line.

Wakefield tried in vain to get back into the game. On 70 minutes O'Brien's header following a free kick was straight at Morgan and on 73 minutes Mugadza's drive from a tight angle flew inches wide.

Farsley increased their advantage on 77 minutes when Reeves nipped in behind the defence to drive the ball past Woods into the bottom corner.

Five minutes from time Farsley scored the third goal when Chris Thackray was on hand to force the ball in following another Farsley corner.

Wakefield failed to register a goal on the scoresheet. Highley's turn and shot from 15 yards brought a good save from Morgan on 86 minutes and O'Brien's 20 yard volley flew well over with a minute left.

Wakefield have a chance to progress in another FA competition next weekend when they visit Warrington Town in the FA Trophy, a feat which looks relatively more easy to accomplish.

Report by Phil Rann

On paper, this looks like another convincing defeat. In reality, we held out a team two divisions above us fairly comfortably for almost an hour before former Emley defender Ryan Crossley scored from a corner with the scrappiest chance Farsley had created up to that point.

Brighton Mugadza's free-kick had forced a smart stop from Farsley keeper Tom Morgan down to his right hand side just minutes before the home side took the lead. Mugadza was the only dangerman as another shot flew just over as Wakefield pushed for an equaliser. A goal came, but unfortunately it was for Farsley, a mistake let in former Wakefield-Emley striker Damien Reeves one-on-one with Andy Woods and he made no mistake as he put the game to bed.

Seven minutes from the end, it was 3-0 after sloppy defending from another set piece allowed Thackeray to bundle the ball over the line.

Fine skill from Danny Highley forced another good save from Morgan, while Niall O'Brien shot over as Wakefield finished the game the stronger.

Team: Woods, Howson, Fawcus, Challender, Cressey, Stoneman, Highley, O'Brien, Kyriacou, Kenworthy, Mugadza.
Subs Not Used: Stevenson, Normaschild, S Wright.

Attendance: 280

This was a fighting performance from Wakefield, the number of challenges and blocks that were made were very encouraging and a long way clear of the attitude by some players at the end of last season who were good enough to keep us up but couldn't be bothered. This is a team that fights but lacks mainly experience and a bit of quality up front. Farsley were a better side than us, but 2-0 or 3-1 would have been a fairer result.

Just a quick comment on the vast prices at Farsley today, Ł8.50 to get in for an FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round match against a side from two divisions below and Ł2 for a programme. Hardly good value for money.

Sep 26th  Gresley Rovers v  Wakefield
Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield FC fell to their tenth straight league defeat after conceding a goal a minute from time at Gresley, despite putting in a superb performance at Moat Street. Wakefield welcomed Ben Cressey back into the squad after he missed out on Saturday, but were without injured players Simon Wright, Demi Kyriacou, Scott Fulton and Richard Kettlewell.

The visitors started brightly with both Chris Fawcus and Niall O'Brien having shots charged down in the opening four minutes. On 11 minutes a Liam Brompton corner was flicked on by Greg Challender to Marc Townsend who headed just wide of the goal.

The lively Paul Edwards was one player who was causing Wakefield some problems. On 12 minutes he had a shot excellently charged down and seven minutes later he headed inches over the crossbar.

On 29 minutes Wakefield were dealt a blow when Townsend left the field on a stretcher with a dislocated shoulder and was taken to hospital. Steve Kenworthy came on to replace him. Four minutes later Wakefield were again causing problems from a set piece. Fawcus' corner was flicked on again by Challender for Matthew Hoyle to head just over the crossbar. Wakefield continued to threaten.

On 35 minutes a Brighton Mugadza cross was headed straight up in the air by Hoyle who, when the ball came down, attempted a overhead kick. The shot was superbly saved by Tommy Whittle in the home goal. On 42 minutes a Brompton cross following a flowing exchange with Hoyle was headed straight at Whittle by Kenworthy.

Gresley finished the half strongly. A Tom Betteridge cross was headed straight at Andy Woods by Carl Slater and Edwards had a drive superbly charged down in first half injury time.

In the second half the action continued to come. On 47 minutes Edwards drove just wide then two minutes later Kenworthy shot inches wide from 25 yards at the other end. On 51 minutes, Challender curled a free kick just over for Wakefield and six minutes later Hoyle's curling effort also flashed just over from 20 yards.

Woods was called into action on 64 minutes when Edwards sent in a superb effort from 25 yards. The Wakefield keeper got his fingertips to the ball to pull off a superb save and tip it round the post.

Two minutes later an O'Brien long throw was flicked on by Paul Stoneman but Hoyle headed straight at Whittle. A minute later the action was back up the other end with Edwards' powerful 25 yard drive crashing against the foot of the post.

On 68 minutes, Mugadza turned inside and curled a shot just wide for Wakefield and four minutes later the visitors were within inches of taking the lead when Kenworthy's volley with the outside of his foot rattled the Gresley crossbar with Whittle beaten.

Disaster struck for Wakefield 13 minutes from time. Gresley broke clear from a Wakefield free kick after a mistake by Ben Cressey. Edwards initial effort was well parried by Woods, but substitute Ravi Sangha was on hand to slot the rebound home from close range.

Wakefield continued to play well. On 83 minutes, Challender curled another free kick just over. Five minutes from time Wakefield finally found the back of the net. A Fawcus corner was met by a powerful header by Stoneman which flew into the net, just under the crossbar.

Two minutes later Wakefield almost snatched a winner. Danny Highley's cross was met by Hoyle but the latter headed wide of the goal.

A minute from time Gresley snatched a winning goal. Woods pulled off a good save to keep out a top corner bound effort but Sangha was again on hand to follow up and put the ball home.

               Wakefield v Belper Town
               Report by Dan Brownhill

Wakefield are still in search of their first league point of the season after falling to
defeat against Belper Town at College Grove in a poor game of football.

Wakefield came closest to scoring on 22 minutes. A long punt upfield was superbly
held up by the returning Matthew Hoyle for Steve Kenworthy to volley at goal, but
the ball flew straight at Andy Carney in the Belper goal.

Belper took the lead on 37 minutes. Kelvin Mushambi stoked the ball home from
close range following a pull back from the byline. The visitors should have doubled
their lead right on the half time whistle, but Ross Hannah's header from a deep
       ross went well wide.

A lacklustre Wakefield failed to break down a resilient Belper in the second half.
Their best chance came on 82 minutes when a ball over the top was lifted just over
         the crossbar by Hoyle.

Belper scored their second goal two minutes from time. Hannah powered past
Wakefield skipper Paul Stoneman to round Andy Woods and slot the ball home.

Sep 19th  Report by Dan Brownhill
Wakefield v Harrogate Railway

Wakefield FC are still looking for their first point of the season but were unlucky not to receive it after a much improved display, particularly in the second half, against Harrogate Railway Athletic.

Wakefield welcomed new signings Adam Oldham and Liam Brompton into the side along with Simon Wright who was returning after a spell out injured. Demi Kyriacou dropped to the bench and Liam Berry was not selected. The other player missing from the side that won at Chester-le-Street Town was the recently departed Marc Thompson.

Harrogate were the better side in the early part of the game. On 5 minutes Graham Marchant ran through on goal but slashed the ball into the side netting from a tight angle. A minute later, Scott Ryan sent a hard volley over the crossbar from 25 yards.

On 7 minutes good work by Steve Kenworthy saw his low ball met by Liam Brompton, but the latter's shot was mishit from 12 yards.

Harrogate took the lead on 9 minutes. Marchant completely missed the ball with his first attempt, but his second was a thundering volley that left Andy Woods with no chance in the Wakefield goal.

Harrogate continued to threaten as Lyle Hillier drove wide from 25 yards on 12 minutes.

Wakefield then began to get back into a very entertaining game of football. On 18 minutes Kenworthy's 25 yard shot flew over and on 37 minutes a Bobby Stevenson cross was headed out for Kenworthy to again volley over the crossbar from 20 yards.

On 38 minutes, Harrogate goalkeeper Liam Sutcliffe handled in his own penalty area and an indirect free kick was awarded 15 yards out. Townsend touched it to Paul Stoneman but he dragged his shot well wide of the goal.

Wakefield finished the half on top as four minutes from time Brompton met a deep cross at the far post, but his effort was well charged down by a defender.

The second half began steadily, with Phil Turner curling a Harrogate free kick just over on 56 minutes and Stevenson lobbing over from 20 yards on 63 minutes at the other end following good work by Kenworthy and substitute Brighton Mugadza.

On 69 minutes, disaster struck for Wakefield. Marchant, who looked well offside to most of the spectators, waltzed through and stroked the ball past Woods. It was unlucky for Wakefield for whom Marc Townsend had been flagged offside a moment earlier at the other end when he quite clearly was not.

Harrogate should have added a third goal on 77 minutes, but Liam Gray's free header from Nathan James' cross was straight at Woods from 6 yards out.

Wakefield continued to pressurise Harrogate well and got their reward 12 minutes from time. A low cross in by Brompton was thrashed into the net by Townsend on the goalline to give them hope.

Three minutes later though the game was effectively over as Harrogate regained their two goal lead. A deep cross was pulled back by Andy Shields for Lyle Hillier to smash the ball home from close range.

Wakefield continued to create chances but without reward. On 85 minutes Demi Kyriacou's deflected shot was well saved by Sutcliffe and a minute from time the Wakefield substitute again had a shot well saved after turning inside a defender.

On 89 minutes, Kenworthy's long range effort shaved the crossbar and in injury time a Mugadza corner was met by Danny Highley but his shot from point blank range went straight into Sutcliffe's arms.

              Chester Le Street v Wakefield
               FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round

Wakefield progressed through to the second qualifying round stage of the FA Cup
Sponsored by e.on after a battling performance in the north east.

The Wakefield starting eleven saw two changes to the team that started against
Rossendale United. Greg Challender, absent due to a rib injury, was replaced by
Liam Berry and Brighton Mugadza dropped to the bench in favour of Steve
Kenworthy. Joining Mugadza and Will McGahan on the bench were reserve players
Declan Normaschild and Joe Howson. Reserve team goalkeeper Matt Wright had
injured a hamstring against Woodley Sports Reserves the previous night so was
               unavailable.

Chester-le-Street had the first chance of a fairly even first half. Jonathan Wightman
ran through to just beat Wakefield goalkeeper Andy Woods to the ball but lifted it
               just wide of the net.

Wakefield took the lead on 21 minutes. Berry released Bobby Stevenson down the
left. Stevenson turned inside the full back and curled a 20 yard lob over Ian Aitken
in the home goal into the far top corner of the net.

Wightman continued to cause problems for Wakefield. On 35 minutes he turned
inside and sent a powerful drive from the edge of the area towards goal. Woods
was up to the task however, pulling off a smart save to push the ball wide.

After half time, the home side continued to press but the Wakefield defence stood
firm. On 51 minutes, Chester-le-Street should have equalised when the ball was
deflected through to Wightman to leave him with a clean shot on goal from only
6 yards out. Luckily for Wakefield, Wightman went to power the ball into the net,
but completely sliced it and it flew harmlessly wide.

On 55 minutes, Aitken was forced into action at the other end. A curling free kick
from Marc Thompson caused the danger but Aitken got his fingertips to the ball
o turn it over the crossbar.

From the resulting corner taken by Chris Fawcus, Paul Stoneman rose highest to
head at goal but the ball flew just wide.

Chester-le-Street continued to enjoy the vast majority of the possession but without
having clear chances on goal. The Wakefield centre-backs in particular were up to
the challenge an dealt with the balls into the box well.

The closest Wakefield came to adding a second goal was 14 minutes from time.
A Fawcus corner was met by Niall O'Brien, but his header bounced inches wide of
               the goal.

Sep 12th Report by Dan Brownhill
Wakefield v  Rossendale United

Wakefield fell to their seventh league defeat from seven games played after losing and failing to score once again at College Grove against Rossendale United.

Rossendale first came close on three minutes. A deep corner saw a looping header deflect off a Wakefield defender and bounce off the top of the crossbar with Andy Woods stranded.

On 19 minutes Wakefield created a chance of their own after breaking clear from a Rossendale attack. Marc Thompson put in Marc Townsend but he dragged his shot wide under pressure from a defender.

Three minutes later Phil Edghill was left unmarked but luckily for Wakefield his looping header bounced just wide.

Wakefield threatened again on 34 minutes, a deep Bobby Stevenson cross was met by Demi Kyriacou, but his flick header was just wide.

On 47 minutes Rossendale almost gifted Wakefield the lead. A 20 yard drive from Kyriacou was spilled by James Salisbury, but Townsend just couldn't get to the ball before Salisbury managed to grab it.

A minute later Rossendale took the lead. Phil Eastwood's drive from the edge of the area somehow made its way through Woods to register a goal which Wakefield will be desperately disappointed to have conceded.

Wakefield tried in vain to get back into the game. On 65 minutes Kyriacou's powerful header from 12 yards after Niall O'Brien's ball in was just over.

On 71 minutes a long ball forward by Chris Fawcus picked out Townsend's run but he was unlucky to see his flick header fall straight into Salisbury's arms.

A minute later Townsend was in the action again, this time with a sweet volley after the ball had sat up nicely for him 20 yards out. The ball flew straight into Salisbury's arms, however, and the chance was gone.

Rossendale almost snatched a second goal two minutes from time when Adam Cook raced clear, but his drive was just wide of the post.

Bradford Park Avenue v Wakefield
Wakefield are still without a UniBond League point this season after another defeat at Bradford Park Avenue. The visitors were still missing Richard Kettlewell, Simon Wright and Scott Fulton through injury. Marc Thompson was brought into the team at the expense of Ben Cressey who played at Woodley Sports on tuesday night. The only other team change saw Will McGahan starting with Brighton Mugadza dropping to the substitutes bench.

Avenue had the ball in the net as early as the 4th minute. A mistake by Toby Rutter let in David Cooke. His attempt at goal was parried by Andy Woods and thrashed into the net by Lee Morris right on the goalline but the goal was disallowed as Morris was adjudged to be offside.

In the 5th minute Wakefield thought they had won a penalty after a handball appeal in the Bradford area. The referee looked to have given it but then, after consulting with his assistant, it appeared that he had misread the assistant's flag which had been raised for offside.

Wakefield's first attempt on goal came on 10 minutes when a Niall O'Brien long
throw was headed towards goal by Demi Kyriacou but the effort was straight at
Avenue goalkeeper Piotr Skiba.

The home side took the lead on 11 minutes. Jeremy Illingworth headed back across
goal for Liam Flynn to head home unmarked from close range.
On 33 minutes the
ball sat up nicely for Neil Grayston to volley at goal. Andy Woods pulled off a neat
save diving to his left to deny him.

Wakefield's best chance came right on half time. A long throw by O'Brien was met
by captain Paul Stoneman but his powerful header flew inches over the crossbar.

The second half saw very little in the way of goalmouth action. On the hour Marc
Townsend dispossesed Neil Redfearn and crossed but Kyriacou's header again bounced tamely into Skiba's arms.

Substitute Brighton Mugadza had an impact on the game when he replaced Will McGahan on 65 minutes. On 73 minutes his long range effort from 20 yards was deflected agonisingly wide of the post, then on 78 minutes he burst clear down the left and drove the ball inches wide again.

A bad afternoon for Wakefield ended with captain Paul Stoneman limping off seven
minutes from time as they failed to find a breakthrough and now look to Tuesday's game against Rossendale United at College Grove to try and find their first league points.

Sep 5th Report by Dan Brownhill
Woodley Sports v Wakefield

Wakefield crashed to their fifth UniBond League defeat from five games played to leave them still searching for their first point of the season at Lambeth Grove.

The visitors were the first to threaten in a hard fought first half. Brighton Mugadza's through ball was directed towards goal by Steve Kenworthy on five minutes but his shot was weak and Liam Higginbotham in the Woodley goal was able to make an easy save.

Woodley hit back with a first time volley from Chris Curley on six minutes which flew just wide and a long range effort from Carlos Meakin on nine minutes which was straight at Andy Woods.

A minute later a through ball from defence by captain Paul Stoneman saw Mugadza volley at goal but he hooked well over from a difficult position.

On 19 minutes Woodley had should have taken the lead when Daniel Douglas-Pringle ran through to beat Niall O'Brien to a loose ball but he hooked wide under pressure.

Five minutes later Woods was unable to hold a low cross and the rebound fell to
Douglas-Pringle but his attempt from close range was somehow deflected over by a defender.

The action continued to come as Wakefield enjoyed their best spell of the game. A long crossfield ball by Mugadza found Chris Fawcus on the opposite wing on 27 minutes. He took the ball round the full back with his first touch, his second touch took him to the byline and his third touch was a thundering volley at goal from an impossible angle that looped over Higginbotham and crashed back out off the inside of the far post.

On the half hour it was Fawcus again threatening the scoresheet with a long range drive but this time Higginbotham was able to gather easily. Woodley immediately
counter-attacked as Douglas-Pringle ran clean through on goal at the other end but
Woods pulled off a tremendous one handed save to deny him.

On 35 minutes a long range volley from Woodley captain Chris Young was
straight at Woods and on 39 minutes Luke Horrocks ran clear down the right and crossed for Meakin to smash the ball at goal but he was denied by a fantastic finger tip save by Woods.

Woodley were beginning to make their quality and pace up front show and right on
half time Meakin powered towards goal and tried a 20 yard drive. Woods again was on hand to make a good save to push the ball wide.

The second half began with a couple of Wakefield chances as Mugadza's long range drive on 47 minutes went well over and Marc Townsend dragged his shot to leave Higginbotham with an easy save after Mugadza's through ball on 48 minutes.

Woodley took the lead on 49 minutes. Adam Morning's left wing corner was met by
Meakin who placed his header under the crossbar.
Four minutes later it was two.
Meakin's cheeky back-heeled through ball split the Wakefield defence and Curley was on hand to slot the ball past Woods.

Wakefield tried in vain to get back into the game. Mugadza tried a long range effort
on the turn on 67 minutes but the ball went well over the crossbar.

On 70 minutes Douglas-Pringle saw his shot on the turn go just wide before Young
thrashed the ball into the top corner from 20 yards after the ball came out to him following a wonderful save from Woods. The referee's assistant was waving his flag furiously to suggest an infringement but the referee chose to ignore him and the goal stood.

It clearly was not to be Wakefield's day as Demi Kyriacou saw his 30 yarder flash just wide on 73 minutes and substitute Danny Highley wasted the best chance of
the day for the visitors on 75 minutes when he beat the offside trap but blazed miles over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat.

On 78 minutes Mugadza picked up the ball in the area and laid off to Greg
Challender but his drive went inches wide of the far post and on 83 minutes
Highley's shot from 20 yards was straight at Higginbotham.

Woodley added the fourth goal six minutes from time. Meakin curled the ball into
the top corner from the edge of the area as the home side broke out following a Wakefield attack, despite Woods managing to get a finger to it.

Five minutes from time Townsend was clearly elbowed in the face by Woodley substitute Mario-Sergio Daniel to leave the Wakefield man lying on the ground but neither the referee or his assistant saw it and justice was not done as no card was produced, apart from one for Townsend himself who was booked for kicking the advertising boards in frustration after getting to his feet.

In injury time the action continued to come. Daniel's shot flashed across the face of goal from a tight angle for Woodley and Wakefield had a Highley header deflected over the crossbar and a Stoneman volley brilliantly tipped wide by Higginbotham as they failed to find a consolation goal.

Wakefield v Dunston Federation Brewery
FA Cup Preliminary Round

Wakefield twice came from behind to progress to the next round of the FA Cup
Sponsored by e.on at the expense of Northern League opponents Dunston
Federation Brewery.

The visitors took the lead in the second minute. Gareth McAlindon's free kick was
volleyed first time into the bottom corner by Graeme Armstrong.Wakefield equalised on 30 minutes when a Chris Fawcus free kick found its way to Brighton Mugadza, who took the ball past a defender before drilling it into the bottom corner.

Dunston regained their lead three minutes into the second half. Armstrong beat the
offside trap to slot the ball past Woods to register his second goal of the game.

The home side showed great spirit to get themselves back into the game seven minutes later. The lively Mugadza scored his second goal as he accepted a short free kick from Simon Wright before turning inside and driving the ball into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Dunston almost went back in front when Steve Kenworthy was forced to clear off the line with a diving header following a deep cross. Wakefield then took control of the game for the final quarter of the game, with Greg Challender having a clear effect on the team from midfield.

The winner came 12 minutes from time when new signing Demi Kyriacou climbed
highest to head home Mugadza's deep cross after the latter had rounded Dunson
goalkeeper Andrew Clark.
Wakefield nearly scored a fourth goal on 81 minutes
after Marc Townsend had been sent clear by Kyriacou, but Townsend's drive at
goal was well saved by Clark and the game finished with no further score.

               Cammell Laird v Wakefield

Wakefield were well beaten by Merseysiders Cammell Laird at Kirklands in a match
that was effectively over at half time. Andy Battye and Richard Kettlewell both
missed the game through injury whilst Toby Rutter and Bobby Stevenson were also
               unavailable.

The home side took the lead on 16 minutes. An exellent pull back from the byline
was superbly put into the top corner first time by Jamie McGuire from the edge of
the area. The lead was doubled on 20 minutes. Eddie Jebb burst through the middle
of the Wakefield defence and blasted the ball past Andy Woods. Cammell Laird
made it  3-0 nine minutes before half time. Chris Nezianya found space outside
the area and  thrashed the ball into the back of the net.

It was Nezianya who scored Cammell Laird's fourth and his second goal of the
game right on half time as he waltzed through the Wakefield defence to coolly slot
the ball past Woods from close range.

Wakefield were playing with the wind in the second half but failed to break down a
strong, well organised Cammell Laird side as the game ended with no further
               addition to the score.

Report by Dan Brownhill
Wakefield v Buxton

Wakefield fell to their third league defeat from three games played but after the hard
work and determination again shown by the players, that first victory cannot be far
               away.

The home side were without Richard Kettlewell who picked up an injury against
Goole on Tuesday night. Also still unavailable were Curtis Bitton-Price and Toby
Rutter. Marc Townsend, Brighton Mugadza and Chris Fawcus were all included in
the starting line up to replace Kettlewell along with Liam Berry and Danny Highley
who both dropped to the bench.

Wakefield were the first to have a chance on goal on 9 minutes. A defensive slip by
Buxton allowed Townsend to pick the ball up. He fed Steve Kenworthy on the edge
of the area but his curling effort went harmlessly wide.Wakefield were dealt a blow
on 14 minutes when centre back Andy Battye was forced off injured. Dane Murphy
came on to replace him with Niall O'Brien dropping back into defence.

Buxton then had their first real chance when they broke out from a Wakefield corner
kick. Captain Anton Foster was left with a clear chance on goal but miscued his
shot and the ball bounced well wide of the goal. The visitors took the lead on 31
minutes. A first time cross by Jordan Hall was met by Aaron Brady who made no
mistake at the near post, nestling the ball in the far bottom corner with a superb
               first time finish.

Wakefield came back at Buxton well before half time but without finding a goal. A
Townsend lay-off to Kenworthy on 34 minutes led to the latter flashing a 20 yard
shot  just over the bar. Then on 41 minutes a Brighton Mugadza corner saw Niall
O'Brien climb highest to head at goal, but the defender on the line managed to head
the ball away from underneath his own crossbar.

Wakefield continued to press strongly in the second half. On 47 minutes Mugadza
burst clear down the left. His ball into the area found Townsend but he couldn't
control his shot and the ball was easily collected by Scott Hartley in the Buxton
               goal.

On the hour a nasty collision between Hartley and O'Brien left the goal unguarded
but Simon Wright's attempted lob from 35 yards clipped the top of the cross bar
and  went over. On 66 minutes Buxton almost extended their lead. Substitute
Adam Lee crossed in for Brady to divert the ball towards the net but Andy Woods
made an excellent save from point blank range.

Two minutes later poor Buxton defending allowed Townsend to get hold of a long
ball forward. He managed to get a strike at goal in between two defenders but
Hartley got down well to make a good stop. The visitors were nearly gifted the
second goal on 78 minutes as Wright left a ball forward for Woods to collect but
Brady was too close and nipped in to round the Wakefield keeper. He was forced
wide however, and put the ball into the side netting from a tight angle.

Wakefield finished the game with numerous long throw-ins and set pieces but
resolute Buxton defending meant they were unable to find the back of the net,
despite a handful of goalmouth scrambles. The best chance fell to Mugadza deep
into stoppage time after a long throw in had been cleared. The lively Wakefield man
curled the ball towards goal from 20 yards but Hartley pulled off an excellent flying
save to ensure Buxton went home with all three points.

               Result: Wakefield 0 – 1 Buxton

Aug 22nd Report by Dan Brownhill
Wakefield v Goole FC

Wakefield fell to a second defeat from the two league games played so far after conceding two soft goals in the first half against Goole at College Grove. They started the game still without Curtis Bitton-Price (ankle). Toby Rutter was also unavailable and will also miss the games against Buxton at home and Cammell Laird away

The home side threatened first on 11 minutes. Billy Abbott struck a sweet first time volley from 25 yards but Chris Hill in the Goole goal pushed the ball round the post.Goole's first attempt was a Martin Thacker free kick on 14 minutes that somehow made it through the Wakefield wall but Andy Woods got down well to make a straightforward save to his right.

Thacker and Gary Duffty both saw long range efforts fly over the cross bar before Goole took the lead on 20 minutes. A long ball over the top saw Thacker race clear. He kept his composure well to take a touch and slot the ball past Woods into the net.

Wakefield went straight down the other end from the kick off. Niall O'Brien's long throw in was headed out to Abbott who curled the ball just wide from the edge of the area. On 25 minutes Simon Wright's curling free kick was touched down to Steve Kenworthy but he lifted the ball over the crossbar from close range.

On 31 minutes Goole extended their lead. Paul Palmer found space in the box and slotted the ball past Woods from close range. Two minutes later disaster struck for Wakefield. Lee Harper picked up the ball 25 yards out and thundered it into the top corner leaving Woods with no chance.

Wakefield tried in vain to get back into the match. On 40 minutes the lively Abbott laid the ball off to Kenworthy down the left hand side, but the Wakefield striker's effort was easy for Hill to handle. Two minutes later another O'Brien long throw caused problems for the visitors' defence as Danny Highley climbed highest but headed just wide.

The second half started with Wakefield making a triple substitution., but it was Goole who almost extended their lead. Andrew Jackson's low drive from inside the box bounced back out off the inside of the post and was hacked clear.

Wakefield then began to press more but, initially, with little result. On 58 minutes a
powerful Marc Townsend drive from the edge of the area brought a fantastic save from Hill. Then on 60 minutes a Paul Stoneman header from Brighton Mugadza's free kick was hacked clear from the goal line. The resulting throw in by O'Brien again caused mayhem in the Goole defence but they eventually managed to hook the ball clear.

The excellent Mugadza showed excellent skill on 81 minutes to beat two defenders to get into the box but his drive was saved well by Hill. Wakefield eventually found a breakthrough. An O'Brien long throw in came off the top of a Goole defender's head to Abbott at the far post. He hooked the ball first time from behind him into the far corner of the net but it was too little too late for Wakefield.

The last action of the game saw a Mugadza free kick headed down at the far post
by O'Brien but the ball unluckily bounced over the crossbar.

Report by Dan Brownhill
Colwyn Bay v Wakefield

Wakefield's opening UniBond league fixture ended in defeat in North Wales, despite the visitors having much the better of the play.

Wakefield started the game without Curtis Bitten-Price (ankle) and Brighton Mugadza (awaiting international clearance from Zimbabwe). Otherwise, there were no other missing faces.

The away side were the first to threaten on 16 minutes in an evenly fought first half. Richard Kettlewell rose highest to head at goal following Simon Wright's corner but the ball was well pushed away by Colwyn Bay goalkeeper Ryan Brookfield.

It was Kettlewell who again threatened with a header on 24 minutes. This time it
was Toby Rutter who crossed from the opposite wing but this time the ball fell
harmlessly into Brookfield's arms.

The hosts then began to settle down and come more into the game. On 25
minutes Neil Black's effort from the edge of the area flashed just wide.

Colwyn Bay then took the lead on 29 minutes. Kenny Burgess was put clean
through on goal via a flick-on header, but his attempt was well saved by Andy
Woods. Burgess however followed up to be first to the rebound and pulled the ball back for Darren Wright to head home from close range.

Both sides finished the first half with chances to score. Robbie Williams and Burgess both saw driven shots excellently saved by Woods whilst at the other end of the field Niall O'Brien's long throw in was flicked on for Steve Kenworthy to head towards goal but the ball bounced inches wide of the post.

Wakefield dominated the second half for long periods as they tried in vain to get
back into the match.

Billy Abbott's 25 yard drive went just wide on 63 minutes. Wakefield then
introduced Marc Townsend to replace Liam Berry with O'Brien thrown up front to
give the away side more prescence in the box.

Townsend had an instant effect on the game as Wakefield stepped up the pace
into another gear for the last 25 minutes. On 76 minutes Townsend's first time shot
from the edge of the area went inches wide and on 78 minutes his 20 yard effort
whistled just over the cross bar.

With nine minutes remaining Wakefield were reduced to ten men as Kettlewell was sent off for a second bookable offence. His first booking early on in the game was a certain yellow card, but the second one, although a clear foul, seemed harsh.

However, Wakefield continued to dominate during the last ten minutes. The closest they came to an equaliser was a minutes before the end. The lively O'Brien's low cross was driven hard towards the net by Townsend but Brookfield pulled off a great save to deny him.

Steve Kenworthy's snapshot on the turn was comfortable for Brookfield in injury time as the action ended with Wakefield failing to find the breakthrough and Colwyn Bay going away with three points.

from the penalty spot. Billy Abbott was tripped in the area by the Brighouse goalkeeper just before half time and Kettlewell scored the resulting penalty to regain the one goal lead.
