Dec 26th Frickley Athletic v W Emley

                FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 0 W - EMLEY 0

December 26th 2005  by Dan Brownhill

Emley drew with local rivals Frickley Athletic at Westfield Lane after a scrappy game
from which a draw was probably a fair result.

Emley were still without Micky Norbury, who sat out his finally game of a three
match suspension, and were missing Richard Chattoe who was also suspended.

The first chance of the game came on 3 minutes. Greg Pearce challenged for an
Andy Wright corner but the ball looped harmlessly wide. Frickley's first chance
arrived on 17 minutes. Former Emley man Robert Pell challenged with goalkeeper
Andy Woods and the ball looped into the air but landed just over the cross bar on
                the roof of the net.

Pell again almost opened the scoring on 25 minutes. His long range volley from
25 yards was well tipped over by Woods at full stretch. Frickley were almost gifted a
goal three minutes before half time. The ball was deflected through to Pell from a
Christian Fox challenge and the Frickley target man found himself clean through
on goal. He neatly put the ball passed Woods but the goal was disallowed for offside.

The second half was again a scrappy, tough tackling affair of few chances although
Emley had two great chances to register a goal on the scoresheet.

Firstly, on 54 minutes Damien Reeves was left clean through on goal after a bad
mistake by Frickley captain Steve Kennedy. The Emley forward saw his attempted
finish well saved by Gary Ingham in the home goal, with strike partner Matthew
Hoyle unmarked and screaming for the ball down his right.

Then on 71 minutes Christian Fox was put through on goal. He did choose to square
the ball to Hoyle who was left with a simple tap in, but the linesman judged that he
had strayed just offside and the goal was disallowed.

Both sides had decent penalty appeals turned down by referee Jason Tyas, but
overall a goalless draw was probably the fairest result.

                FRICKLEY WEBSITE REPORT

The Blues fought out a goalless draw against Emley in today's Boxing Day 'derby'
game. Both sides had a goal disallowed for offside whilst Gary Ingham and his opposite number Andy Woods both made a couple of good saves and the referee waved away Frickley's claims for a penalty late on following a clear hand-ball inside the Emley box.

With Phil Lindley serving a one-match suspension Gary Marrow brought Lee Pugh back into the midfield whilst James Stansfield passed a late fitness test but Matt Daly was unavailable for selection.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, although Simon Collins did test Andy Woods with a quickly taken 25 yard free-kick but the shot was straight at Woods. With ten minutes gone Alex Callery was cynically brought down just outside the box by Christian Fox but, surprisingly, the referee opted not to caution the offender. However, just seconds later Steve Robinson was cautioned for an equally cynical challenge as Emley attempted to break following a free-kick and Nicky Heinemann quickly followed him into the referee's book.

The Blues began to settle, started to enjoy more possession and went close to opening the scoring with nearly 20 minutes gone. Martyn Woolford's cross from the left was sliced in to the air by Robert Tonks and Rob Pell reacted quickly to lift the ball over the advancing Woods from 6 yards but the ball landed on the roof of the net. Pell soon went close again as he controlled a long free-kick from Gary Ingham to turn and fire in a dipping 25 yard shot which Woods did well to push over the bar. On 37 minutes Pell thought he'd given the Blues the lead when he fired through Woods' legs from 8 yards following Callery's pass but he was adjudged to be offside. Minutes later Emley were a little fortunate not to be reduced to ten men when Matthew Hoyle elbowed Heinemann as they jumped for a high ball. The assistant referee indicated to the referee the use of an elbow but Hoyle received just a yellow card.

Early in the second half Callery had a good run from his own half to the edge of the Emley box but his final shot lacked power and was comfortably dealt with by Woods. The Blues were again enjoying a lot of possession but the visitors had a great chance to take the lead when Damien Reeves found himself sprinting clear following a long clearance but Reeves' low shot was brilliantly saved by Ingham diving to his right. At the other end Pugh's 20 yard shot was straight at Woods but, despite all their possession, the Blues were struggling to carve out any clear cut chances. On 70 minutes Emley then had the ball in the net but this time it was their turn to have the goal ruled out for offside as Reeves' through ball sent Fox and Hoyle clear into the Blues box' but after beating Ingham Fox opted to pass to Hoyle who was clearly offside as he rolled the ball in to the empty net. The blues had strong claims for a penalty turned down after 80 minutes when Robinson's long throw caused havoc in the Emley box leading to a defender clearly knocking the ball away from Callery with his arm directly in front of the referee who waved play on. Substitute Andy Evans put a low 18 yard shot just wide of the right hand post for the Blues with minutes left to play but it was too little, too late.

Dec 17th W Emley v Burscough

                W - EMLEY 2 BURSCOUGH 1

December 17th 2005  by Dan Brownhill

W - Emley defeated a poor Burscough side by two goals to one at Belle Vue.
Emley were without Christian Fox and Mick Norbury (suspended) and Paul Staniforth
                 (injured) for the match.

The first half was a very poor affair, possibly the worst half of football that has been seen in a
match involving Emley this season. Emley's best chance came in the third minute
when a good passing move set up Steve Kenworthy but he dragged his shot wide.

The game came to life on 61 minutes when Emley took the lead. A Burscough
defender attempted to hack Marc Thompson's effort clear, but the ball struck Damien
                Reeves
and rebounded into the goal.

Burscough were soon back on level terms however. Two minutes after the Emley
goal, poor defending left Tony Gray with an easy tap in from close range. Gray
almost gave Burscough the lead on 68 minutes. His low shot, after turning inside,
went just the wrong side of Andy Woods' near post.

Emley regained the lead on 69 minutes. Andy Wright's corner was put through a
defenders legs by Reeves and Adam Muller was on hand to register his first goal
                since October.

Emley should have sealed the victory seven minutes from time. Reeves' shot was
well saved by Matthew Boswell in the Burscough goal and the ball fell to Muller who
was brought down in the penalty area. Reeves stepped up to take the penalty kick
ut cracked his effort against the inside of the post.

Burscough would have snatched an equaliser in injury time if it wasn't for Emley
keeper Andy Woods. He pulled off a great save to deny Steve Hussey and confirm a
crucial victory for Emley; our first over Burscough since the 0 – 5 defeat in the
FA Trophy in February 2003. This was our first league victory at Belle Vue since
                September 23rd

Burscough : Boswell, Underwood, Dames, Bell (c), Barlow, Hussey, Parry (Rowan 80), Blakeman,

                 Phil Rann report

Poor game on a freezing cold day but a well deserved three points against a side that would be second if they had played the same amount of games as the other play-off teams.

It had 0-0 written all over it for the first hour, with both sides creating little and wasting whatever they did create. Shambollic defending on the line by Burscough led to the opener for Damien Reeves when the clearance struck Reeves' foot and went in the corner.

Two minutes later it was 1-1 after a mistake by Greg Pearce. A good run by number 7 (who was their best player by far) led to Gray prodding home giving Andy Woods no chance.

A very dodgy corner was given soon after for Emley when the linesman gave a goal kick and the Emley players were preparing to defend the goal kick. A well-worked corner led to Reeves tapping through the legs of a defender and Adam Muller finishing it off.

Muller then won a penalty for The Pewits but Reeves struck the post and Wright couldn't get a shot in at the rebound.

Woods made a great save in stoppage time to keep the three points safe.

W-Emley: Woods, S.Wood, Tonks, Chattoe, Pearce, Curtis, Muller, Thompson, Kenworthy (Wright 47), Hoyle, Reeves.
Subs Not Used: Day, Beardsmore.

Attendance: 106.

This is the first time I have said this after we have won, but the referee was awful today. He gave everything to Burscough in the first half, and then everything to W-Emley in the second half, including the dodgy corner for the winning goal. The penalty was just about a penalty but then he missed a clear handball from the rebound. He then didn't say how many minutes he was going to add on and we were into the seventh by the time he blew his whistle. And he needlessly booked Chattoe for what was definitely not a foul, and he booked about three Burscough players for I assume was dissent, little harsh though. He simply lost control, and in the end, the two managers and the crowd were running the game for him because the two linesmen were scarcely better. The refereeing standard is awful at this level.

Wright was basically the difference today when he came on. He was pacey and skilful and got behind the Burscough defence. He helped win the penalty and set up the winner, and then got back to help out the defence in the stoppage time onslaught. He also had a couple of shots just wide and well saved and was the spark we needed.

The defence was better today, and I know Pearce's slice will be blamed for the goal, but Pearce and Curtis played well at the back today, and so did Simon Wood and Tonksy, who also both got forward well. This allowed Thompson to join Chattoe in midfield and it was better for it. Kenworthy played well until he got injured and he got stuck in, maybe a bit too much at times. Reeves was fairly quiet but I think that is 12 goals in 12 starts for him now, and Hoyle was very impressive especially in the second half as he won headers and held the ball up brilliantly. I think they miss Norbury (suspended for one more match yet), but from the tough run of fixtures starting at Lincoln away, we have seven points from four games with wins at Lincoln and today and a very good and well deserved draw at North Ferriby. Frickley on Boxing Day is the last tricky game (based on the league positions) for a while as we then have Ossett Town, Ashton and Radcliffe to look forward to as well as Unibond Challenge Cup game against Eastwood Town, so anything from the Frickley game will keep us well inside the top half. I know we have played more games so it is difficult to tell how we are doing compared to the other teams, but 32 points isn't bad. 17 games left, can we beat the 52 points we won last season?
Dec 10th W Emley v Witton Albion

W - EMLEY 0 WITTON ALBION 2

December 10th 2005 by Dan Brownhill

W - Emley were defeated by Witton Albion after a poor home performance at Belle Vue.

Emley looked the better side in the opening part of the match. On 20 minutes a Marc Thompson cross was headed towards goal by Adam Muller, but Jon Kennedy in the away goal somehow got his fingers to the ball to pull off a tremendous save.

Witton took the lead on 28 minutes. A defensive tackle by Adam Muller left Mark Peers through on goal and clearly onside. He kept his composure well to slot the ball past Andy Woods into the bottom corner.

A minute later it was almost 2-0. A long range drive from Liam McGuire was well saved by Woods diving to his right.

Emley should have equalised on 37 minutes. The ball found its way across goal to Christian Fox at the far post who was completely unmarked but he blazed wildly over from 6 yards when it seemed easier to score.

Witton again came close to a second goal on 39 minutes. Maynard's powerful shot on the turn again brought a good save from Woods.

Emley tried in vain to find an equaliser before half time. In first half stoppage time Matthew Hoyle put in Damien Reeves but his volley on the turn was deflected just wide for a corner.

Muller then sent a difficult volley wide from inside the penalty area after Andy Wright's corner had been headed out.

Witton then won a free kick and with almost the last kick of the first half grabbed their second goal. Griff Jones slotted the ball into the bottom corner after the free kick had only been half cleared.

Witton restricted Emley to very little of the play in the second half and looked the more likely side to score.

Jones burst past Simon Wood on 47 minutes but volleyed straight at Woods.

The ever dangerous Maynard had further chances to score. On 61 minutes he turned inside and fired just over from 20 yards and then on 67 minutes he ran through on goal after a mistake by Lennie Curtis but placed the ball the wrong side of the post.

Emley's best chance of the second half came in injury time. Muller put Reeves clean through on goal but he chipped the ball well wide of the goal.

W - Emley : Woods, Wood, Tonks (c) (Curtis 62), Chattoe, Pearce, Thompson, Muller, Fox (Kenworthy 62), Hoyle, Reeves, Wright (Day 72). Booked : Chattoe (51), Reeves (82).

Witton Albion : Kennedy, Brownhill (King 45), Ness (Connors 61), Pritchard (c), Spearritt, Peers (Jones 85), McGuire, Lloyd, Moseley, Jones, Maynard. Booked : Spearritt (33).

Referee : A J Greaves (Doncaster).

Assistant Referees : L W H Smith (Scarborough), A Wood (Scarborough).

Attendance : 127.

I've noticed Dan, that in your last three reports, the words 'Christian Fox missed when it seemed easier to score' have appeared. I'm glad its not just me that can see it.

Report by Phil Rann

In stark contrast to last weekend's brave and imaginative performance, today we hoofed the ball long to no-body in particular and lost our shape completely in midfield. Witton, who weren't that great except they didn't lose their shape deserved their win.

Having said that, Witton keeper Jon Kennedy made a point-blank save from Adam Muller after 18 minutes, and Christian Fox blazed over from a good position soon after as W-Emley had the better of the opening exchanges. It all went wrong, however, on 27 minutes, when a defensive tackle from Muller unfortunately played Mark Peers, who was a good ten yards behind the defence, onside. Peers made no mistake with the finish past Andy Woods.

Witton had woken up and began to control the game. Only an excellent save from Woods kept out a second as the home side were restricted to break-aways. Andy Wright and Richard Chattoe combined to set up Damien Reeves, but his goalbound shot was well saved by Kennedy and it went out for a corner.

A cross by Matthew Hoyle soon after almost crept underneath the cross bar, but the alert Kennedy turned it over the top.

But the second goal for Witton wasn't far away. In the 44th minute, Witton were given a free-kick for an earlier incident when it was felt that advantage hadn't been gained. The free-kick was taken and headed clear by Greg Pearce. However, Christian Fox had dozed off, and simply watched Griff Jones stroll past him and place into the far corner.

Half-time arrived and a fairly even game was 2-0 to the visitors.

The second half was a poor performance by Emley. The only plan was 'hoof forward' and only a weak shot by Reeves found the goalkeeper for the first part of the second period. At the other end, Witton's number 11 was clean through after a mistake by Marc Thompson but somehow managed to find a way past Woods but shot wide with the open goal gaping.

A deflected shot by Jones was well saved by Woods after 71 minutes as it swerved in the air, but the action was all taking place at the wrong end for the home supporters.

Although Emley had a lot of possession in the second half in the Witton half, they found few ways to do anything with it. Even good football in stoppage time by Chattoe and Hoyle found Reeves clean through, and whereas he didn't look like missing last week at North Ferriby, he chipped well wide to sum up the afternoon.

Team: Woods, S.Wood, Tonks (Curtis 61), Chattoe, Pearce, Thompson, Muller, Fox (Kenworthy 61), Hoyle, Reeves, Wright (Day 79).

Attendance: 127.

I was going to come on here and say there was an improvement in the attendance but looking on the Unibond official site, I won't. 40 Witton fans were joined were what I thought looked like about 150 others but perhaps it was another case of paying customers only - never mind, maybe its just as well more people didn't watch our second half performance today. It was only for their number 11 that it wasn't more.

Again today, only Chattoe looked 100% committed. Woods couldn't be blamed for either goal and looked sharp for other efforts. Nothing could be done about the first goal, it was a case of bad luck only on Muller (who is crying out for a goal) but the second was definitely the fault of Fox, who had a very poor game. Wright looked OK in the first half but went missing after the break, Thommo looked half fit but I don't know why he is still playing centre half now Curtis is back. Reeves and Hoyle can't be blamed for a lack of service, and I don't think anyone can be blamed for having a really bad game but I think everyone was just below par with the exception of Chattoe who gave his all. Substitute Steve Kenworthy barely touched the ball in half an hour.

Not being pedantic here - the result was deserved - but I thought the referee was very inconsistent. He let Witton's number 5 moan and moan at him throughout the first half, but Chattoe's first foul and the 'I got the ball' that followed earned him a yellow card. Number 5 later had another go at the ref but escaped unscathed. Also, there were a couple of occasions in the second half where Witton kicked the ball away. Similarly, Reeves kicked the ball away in frustration and was swiftly booked. At the end of the day, we were wasting our own time. I just wish referees could be more consistent, he didn't do anything about the succession of Witton players that rolled around on the floor every five minutes and then dusted themselves down after being on the floor for half an hour and sprinted the entire distance of the field. Only three minutes stoppage time was given, I was expecting it be nearer seven or eight with all the 'injuries'. Also, the bald number 4 (captain?) set a really good example by pushing most of the W-Emley team in the face and then wingeing to the referee for half an hour. No booking. Obviously.

Dec 3rd North Ferriby United v W Emley

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED 3 W- EMLEY 3

December 3rd 2005 By Dan Brownhill

10 man W - Emley came from behind to earn a 3-3 draw at top of the table North Ferriby United in a game in which at one point they were leading 2-1.

In a poor first half Emley's first half chance came on 18 minutes. Andy Wright's free kick was flicked on by Mick Norbury only for a defender to clear from under the cross bar.

In a similar incident on 27 minutes, a defender again was forced to clear from off his own goal line after good work by Damien Reeves down the left.

North Ferriby's best chance of the first half came on 31 minutes. Leon Wainman's cross came back off Greg Pearce and fell nicely for Joel Hartley but he drove well wide.

The second half was much better with the first with six goals being scored in total.

Ferriby took the lead on 51 minutes. A left wing corner was headed in by substitute Paul Farley, despite Emley's strong claims that goalkeeper Andy Woods was being fouled.

Emley equalised on 71 minutes. Damien Reeves took advantage of a poor back header to nip in and slot the ball past Paul Sharp in the home goal.

Emley then took the lead on 75 minutes. Reeves again found himself one on one with the keeper and stroked it past him for his second goal of the game.

North Ferriby hit straight back however. Substitute Carl Fothergill was put through on goal and placed his shot right in the corner to give Woods no chance.

A minute later, the home side regained their lead. Joe Lightowler placed the ball in from close range following a low cross from the left hand side.

Emley then had Christian Fox sent off for two bookings inside a minute, both for foul and abusive language to leave them with ten men for the closing seven minutes.

They continued to press for the equaliser however, and found their just reward on 86 minutes. A Paul Staniforth long throw was flicked on by Pearce and broke to Marc Thompson who drove the ball into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

There was still time for Emley to almost snatch a winner. Reeves crashed a shot on the turn against the post in injury time after good work from Matthew Hoyle as the score remained 3-3.

North Ferriby United : Sharp, Thompson, Gowen, Neilson, Dewhurst (Farley 46), Morley, Hartley (Price 76), Bolder (c), Wainman, Lightowler, Botham (Fothergill 23). Booked : Thompson (24).

W - Emley : Woods, Wood, Staniforth, Chattoe (c), Pearce, Thompson, Muller, Fox, Norbury (Tonks 73), Reeves, Wright (Hoyle 62). Sub Not Used : Curtis. Sent Off : Fox (83), Booked : Thompson , Hoyle, Fox , Fox .

Leaders held by David's men

Dec 5 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W - EMLEY maintained ninth position in the UniBond League Premier Division after holding leaders North Ferriby to a 3-3 draw at Grange Lane.

After a goalless first half, Paul David's side, who were down to 10-men for the last seven minutes after Christian Fox was sent off for two bookable offences, led 2-1 after a Damien Reeves double (71 and 74 minutes) wiped out Paul Farley's 51st-minute opener.

Ferriby responded immediately to equalise through Carl Fothergill with 15 minutes left, then took a 3-2 lead when Joe Lightowler poked home from close range.

The game watched by 153.

W - Emley: Woods, Wood, Staniforth, Chattoe, Pearce, Thompson, Muller, Fox, Norbury (Tonks, 73mins), Reeves, Wright (Hoyle, 62mins). Sub not used: Curtis.

What a cracking game of football! by Phil Rann

The first half brought a couple of chances to both sides but neither side found the net until the goal bonanza began in the second half.
Farley put the home side ahead seven minutes into the second half when he appeared to head the ball out of Andy Woods' hands from a left-wing corner.
Damien Reeves levelled the scores twenty minutes later with a neat finish after good work from Richard Chattoe, and W-Emley were ahead just four minutes later with a similar finish after North Ferriby failed to clear the ball.
Ninety seconds later, it was 3-2 to North Ferriby; a combination of good finishing and poor defending contributing to the double goal in the space of a minute.
Simon Wood stopped North Ferriby going 4-2 in front with a wonderful saving tackle which stopped Leon Wainman having a clear run at Andy Woods in the W-Emley goal.
The referee booked Christian Fox soon after this for a foul off the ball. After 82 minutes, he sent Fox off after he swore at one of W-Emley's defenders but the ref thought it was to him. He will now be suspended for one game.
Drama was still to follow though and after North Ferriby had failed to clear the ball, Mark Thompson's left-foot drive found the bottom corner to make it 3-3 with no fan in the ground expecting to see six goals in the second half after a rather dull first half in comparison.
North Ferriby counter-attacked and had a couple of efforts well over the bar, but the main danger was at the other end. Another corner won well by substitute Matthew Hoyle was won by Reeves, who cracked his shot against the post in stoppage time as his second hat-trick in a month and the W-Emley win was denied.
A great result and a great game!!!

Team: Woods, S.Wood, Staniforth, Chattoe, Pearce, Thompson, Muller, Fox, Norbury (Tonks 65)), Reeves, Wright (Hoyle 69).
Sub Not Used: Curtis.

Attendance: 153.

Chattoe and Pearce were cracking today again, and although Reeves had hardly been in the game for the first hour, he knows how to finish, and now has 11 goals in 13 games (3 from the bench).
Norbury won every header to no avail before he went off and Muller also had a better game.

  Lincoln United v W Emley

LINCOLN UNITED 1 W EMLEY 2

November 26th 2005 by Dan Brownhill

Ten man W - Emley battled their way to victory at Ashby Avenue against Lincoln United in a hard fought contest after been reduced to ten men just before half time.

Emley were the first to threaten on 13 minutes. Matthew Hoyle found space 25 yards out following a throw in but drove the ball just wide of the post.

On 21 minutes Danny Brooks' close range effort was well saved by Andy Woods. The ball continued towards goal but Greg Pearce just got back to hack clear off the goal line.

Emley took the lead on 26 minutes. A Marc Thompson free kick from inside his own half was flicked on by Mick Norbury to Hoyle, who turned and fired first time into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Lincoln had a good spell just before half time. Brendan McDaid placed a clean header wide on 35 minutes and Gary Walters saw two efforts well saved two minutes later before Emley were reduced to ten men on 42 minutes.

Mick Norbury and Mark Hone went up together to challenge for a long clearance. Norbury clearly felt he was impeded by Hone and lashed out. After consultation with his linesman, the referee dismissed Norbury for violent conduct.

After half time Lincoln took the game to Emley as they searched out an equaliser. On 53 minutes Walters curled a long range effort onto the top of the crossbar with Woods well beaten.

Lincoln missed further chances with McDaid's clean header well saved by Woods and Dave Gilbert's close range drive flying over the crossbar with the goal gaping.

Emley created their own chances on the counter-attack however. On 58 minutes Andy Wright's low drive from a tight angle flew just wide and on 70 minutes Adam Muller burst through but shot straight at Gareth Jones in the Lincoln goal.

Emley extended their lead on 77 minutes following a Lincoln corner. Hoyle came away with the ball and took it past the last defender on the halfway line. He ran on to draw the goalkeeper superbly and slot the ball between his legs to double the advantage.

Lincoln saw the vast amount of possesion in the second half with the extra man but Emley were still creating chances. Simon Wood's cross was diverted wide by Wright on 79 minutes and Muller charged past the last defender seven minutes from time but Jones got down well to make a save.

Lincoln did register a consolation goal four minutes into injury time. The ball broke through following a challenge in the Emley penalty area for substitute Jamie Bell to force it into the net.

Emley managed to defend out the final minute of added time to register their first away league victory since October 8th at AFC Telford United.

Statto's comments

Both Kenworthy and Tonks missed the game through injuries.
Kenworthy was on crutches and looks to be out for a while

Apparently Fox was absent because Saturday was going to be a free date and allegedly went away for the weekend.

What Dan doesn't mention is the superb captain's display by Chattoe.

At the time of the Norbury incident there was a clash of heads between Chattoe and Lincoln's No 5. Chattoe's head was badly gashed and he had to go off for a change of shirt. He appeared after 1/2 time with his head bandaged but that didn't affect his stirling 2nd half performance which gave the whole side a lift.

Hoyle also looked impressive on his league debut, both goals were very well taken - believe he will take advantage of Kenworthy's absence.

Victory despite Norbury's dismissal

Nov 28 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

RESILIENT W - Emley showed great character to seal a 2-1 UniBond League Premier Division win at Lincoln United, despite being reduced to 10 men before the break.
Experienced striker Mick Norbury was sent off after lashing out at defender Mark Hone.

Victory was claimed in front of just 92 fans thanks to two goals by 18-year-old former Liversedge frontman Matthew Hoyle. Recent signing Hoyle was in his element as the youthful visitors disrupted Lincoln's elder statesmen with pace on the counter attack.

The first goal came on 26 minutes when Marc Thompson's free-kick from inside his own half was flicked on by Norbury. Hoyle turned and fired home first time from the edge of the penalty area.

Earlier, Lincoln's Danny Brooks had been denied by an excellent close-range save from Andy Woods.Greg Pearce was on hand to hack to ball away as it squirmed towards the line.

Lincoln had two good chances to level in the second half. Gary Walters' 53rd-minute long-range curler crashed back into play off the bar. And after Brendan McDaid's header was parried by Woods, Dave Gilbert fired over with the goal gaping.

W - Emley extended their lead with a 77th-minute goal which came from a home corner. Hoyle came away with the ball and took it past the last defender on the halfway line. He ran on to draw the goalkeeper and slot the ball between his legs.

Despite enjoying a high percentage of possession, Lincoln failed to make it count until deep into stoppage time. Substitute Jamie Bell netted a consolation, but it came too late to ignite a revival.

W - Emley boss Paul David said of Norbury's red card: "When you sign a player with a reputation like Mick's, you have to accept the occasional bad with the good. "We showed tremendous character and really troubled Lincoln with the genuine pace we have in our side."

W - Emley, who are ninth, visit leaders North Ferriby United on Saturday.

W - Emley: Woods, Wood, Staniforth (Curtis, 6mins), Chattoe, Pearce, Thompson, Muller, Hoyle, Norbury, Reeves, Wright. Subs not used: Day, Watson.

Nov 22nd W Emley v Spalding United

W - EMLEY 3 SPALDING UNITED 0

November 22nd 2005 by Dan Brownhill

W - Emley progressed through to the next stage of the league cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over first division Spalding at Belle Vue.

Emley took the lead on 3 minutes. A quick free kick sent Matthew Hoyle clear down the left and he pulled the ball back across for Damien Reeves to slot into the open net.

The lead was doubled on 21 minutes. Andy Wright's left wing cross looped over Ben Howling in the Spalding goal and went in off the far post.

On 35 minutes Emley almost made it 3-0. Hoyle's free header was well tipped over by Howling and then on 36 a Christian Fox free kick was headed just over by Paul Staniforth.

Spalding had their best spell just after the break. On 50 minutes a low cross by Kevin Childs was met by Steve Hipkiss but he placed his effort wide.

On 55 minutes first Fox put in Hoyle who saw his shot well saved by Howling and then Steve Kenworthy put in Adam Muller whose shot was again well saved from close range.

On the hour Spalding almost pulled a goal back. Childs beat Andy Woods to the ball but his lobbed attempt at the goal bounced out of play off the top of the cross bar.

Emley then began to dominate the game. On 72 minutes Wright's cross eventually found its way to substitute Lennie Curtis, but he mishit his attempted overhead kick and the chance was wasted.

On 77 minutes a Wright cross was sliced wide of an open goal by Fox from six yards out when it seemed easier to score.

The third goal came on 79 minutes. Wright made space on the edge of the box and drove the ball hard into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

Emley almost added another on 82 minutes. Staniforth's cross was placed wide by Reeves who was in an excellent position as the score remained 3-0 at full time.

Nov 19th W Emley v Radcliffe Borough

W - EMLEY 0 RADCLIFFE BOROUGH 0

November 19th 2005 by Dan Brownhill

W - Emley were held to a goalless draw by second bottom Radcliffe in a poor game at Belle Vue.

In a poor first half Emley's best chance fell to Christian Fox on 26 minutes but his long range effort was well saved by Danny Hurst diving low to his right.

Radcliffe had a couple of notable chances just before half time. Danny Hooper's snapshot from 20 yards flew wide on 38 minutes and a Steve Foster header on 40 minutes from 6 yards out was easy for Andy Woods diving to his right hand side.

In the second half both teams attempted to up the tempo. On 47 minutes Steve Kenworthy sent in a low shot but saw his effort tipped wide by Hurst and on 48 a Andy Wright corner found Marc Thompson but his close range header went over the bar.

On 57 minutes Radcliffe almost took the lead. Rod Thornley found himself clean through on goal but Woods came out well to make a good save.

On 58 minutes Andy Heald's low shot was well saved by Woods and on 71 minutes Thornley struck the outside of the post with a driven shot from 25 yards as Radcliffe enjoyed the better of the chances.

Emley introduced Mick Norbury into the game midway through the second half and this seemed to result in a marked improvement in their performance.

On 81 minutes Fox's free kick was met by substitute Matthew Hoyle but his glancing header flew wide whilst at the other end on 82 minutes Steve Foster saw two efforts in quick succession be superbly deflected wide by Woods.

On 83 minutes a Fox corner was met by Norbury at the far post but his header struck the top of the cross bar. On 85 minutes Norbury was put in by Damien Reeves but his shot from 15 yards curled wide.

Norbury had further chances with headers on 87 minutes and in injury time but saw both attempts at goal go over the cross bar as Radcliffe held out.

Missed chances bring stalemate

Nov 21 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

WITH both sets of supporters willing a goal to applaud just to warm their hands it ended blank in this UniBond clash at Belle Vue!

Both teams played the ball around tidily in midfield but lacked the killer touch up front.

After the break Emley launched themselves out of the blocks.

Within the first two minutes of the second half, Simon Wood fired just wide and Marc Thompson, who slotted in comfortably at centre-back rather than in his usual midfield role, was just off target from Andy Wright's corner.

Rod Thornley, brother of former Town player Ben, nearly put Radcliffe ahead on 57 minutes. But goalkeeper Andy Woods stood his ground to win the one-on-one opportunity.

At times mysterious decisions by the referee left both sets of fans scratching their heads and prompted one wag to exclaim: "We've come to watch the game ref, not you!"

Thornley let rip with a 30-yard drive which went just wide after 71 minutes before teammate Steve Foster attempted a curler which he screwed over. W - Emley boss Paul David threw on substitutes Mick Norbury and Matthew Hoyle to join Damien Reeves up front.

But the action was at the other end as ex-Farsley goalkeeper Woods kept Emley in the game.He denied Foster twice within 30 seconds - the second time with an athletic fingertip save.

Emley hit back but Norbury headed over from Christian Fox's cross on 83 minutes.
And a minute later he hesitated 15 yards out, allowing Simon Kelly to close him down.

Eleventh-placed Emley could still have stolen the points two minutes into stoppage time but Thompson again headed over from Rob Tonks' excellent delivery.

W - Emley: Woods, Wood, Tonks, Chattoe, Staniforth, Thompson, Muller, Fox, Kenworthy (Norbury, 72mins), Reeves, Wright (Hoyle, 76mins). Sub not used: Wray.

Report by Phil Rann

This had 0-0 written all over it from the moment Paul Staniforth's shot was cleared off the line after half an hour. Try as they might, neither W-Emley or Radcliffe could break the deadlock in either half, and both will have to settle for a point.

W-Emley seemed to be playing 4-4-0-2 most of the time as the two front-men were too far ahead of the midfield, and they (Reeves and Kenworthy) got little service throughout the game. Andy Wright was the best man on the park in the first half, if only he could whip a couple of good crosses in every now and again.

The second half was a fairly even affair, and neither team looked like scoring until the last fifteen minutes. Substitute Micky Norbury headed over from a free header on 76 minutes, and Christian Fox's free kick flew well over. At the other end, Radcliffe's number seven had too good shots brilliantly tipped wide and over respectively by Emley keeper Andy Woods. Norbury hit the bar from a W-Emley corner soon after, and then he had a shot which rolled agonisingly wide in stoppage time. Foster hit the side netting with a shot for the visitors, but in all honesty, although they didn't score, W-Emley didn't deserve to lose the game.

Team: Woods, S.Wood, Tonks, Chattoe, Staniforth, Thompson, Muller, Fox, Kenworthy (Norbury 73), Reeves, Wright (Hoyle 77).
Sub Not Used: Wray.

Attendance: 104

The attendance was not helped AGAIN by it saying on the sign outside the ground that we were once again playing Blyth Spartens on Saturday the 5th of November. No wonder no-body turned up. I couldn't quite see the 25 to 50 away fans that Radcliffe would bring, and to be fair, it was a freezing cold day. If only we could advertise to the masses entering Wakefield city centre at 2pm this afternoon, we would have had a full house. Its sad when so many people are christmas shopping 5 weeks away from christmas. There is the next two Saturdays for that.

Anyway, about the performance, its our first clean sheet since our 0-0 draw away at Leek Town on the 4th October, and although we have only collected two points from two consecutive home matches, the outcome must be positive. We look like conceding less goals now we have a decent keeper and a fairly good back four. Bradford had two chances on Tuesday, and scored once, we had about five clear cut chances and scored one. Again today, although Radcliffe had a couple of excellent chances near the end of the game which were brilliantly saved by Woods, in all honesty, the game should have been over by then. We're just not getting the 'rub of the green' in front of goal at the moment, and we must improve our service to the front two to improve this. We've barely scored more goals than the number of games we've played, and now we are halfway through the season with 25 points. Difficult to take when a third of the way through the season, we had 23 points. But I agree with Alan Blackman's comments in today's programme - we need to be patient, and changes for the better cannot be made overnight. The positives are that we have lost one in the last five in all competitions, and conceded just two goals in the last three games. But Muller is still playing in the wrong position, Thompson is filling in the back I understand that (where was Pearce today incidentally?) and Tonks played at left-back and played well. But we need another central midfielder. With Kettlewell out for what we assume is the end of the season, and no-body really to fill his centre-midfield role except Thompson, we need backup in this area. Fox and Wright as right and left wingers is OK as long as we have the strength in the centre. Chattoe was OK today but he is usually very impressive.

Again today though, we hoofed the ball forward at every opportunity to Kenworthy and Reeves (hardly the two tallest forwards in the league) and they did well to hold it up on some occasions, but the midfield didn't arrive fast enough to help them out. Norbury looked the danger man when he came on, and Hoyle had a few nice touches again, and if I was PD, I would play Muller and Hoyle up front together this Tuesday against Spalding to give them some confidence.

Overall, there are some positives to take out of todays game, we understand now that we are not going to be up there chasing for promotion places, but to be honest, we're not consistently goo
d enough to be in the Conference North at the time being, but we are not far off a top-five side. Whereas in 2001/02 we had Bambrook, Day and Norbury sticking the goals in from all angles, this season we have Norbury and Reeves the most likely to score, with Muller (4) and Kenworthy (2) behind them. We need to find someone who can score 20 goals a season. The defence was better today, and hopefully a win on Tuesday against a side from the division below will build our confidence before two away games at mid-table Lincoln Utd and top-of-the-table North Ferriby Utd.

Nov 15th W Emley v Bradford Park Avenue

W - EMLEY 1 BRADFORD PARK AVENUE 1

November 15th 2005 by Dan Brownhill

W - Emley drew 1-1 with Yorkshire rivals Bradford at Belle Vue after a strong second half performance.

Emley were the first to threaten on 6 minutes. Damien Reeves burst clear down the right and crossed but Mick Norbury's effort was well saved by Jon Worsnop in the away goal.

Bradford should have taken the lead on 15 minutes. Niall O'Brien was put clean through on goal but he lifted his effort over the cross bar.

Emley looked the better side in the latter part of the first half. Adam Muller had an effort cleared off the line on 20 minutes and Andy Wright drove into the side netting on 39 minutes after cutting inside.

Emley started the second half with some of the best football they have played over the last few matches. On 56 minutes Christian Fox hooked the ball across goal but Norbury headed straight at Worsnop.

On 59 minutes Reeves turned his man and burst through on goal but his effort was well stopped by Wornsop.

A minute later Emley took the lead. Reeves was put through by Wright and kept his cool to slot the ball past Worsnop and into the net.

Emley should have doubled their advantage on 64 minutes. Reeves again turned his man and squared the ball to the unmarked Fox but he carried it into the keeper's arms when it seemed easier to score and the chance was wasted.

On 67 minutes a Paul Staniforth cross was poked straight at Worsnop by Muller from close range but then disaster struck as Emley were caught on the break. Dean Calcutt turned his man to slot the ball past Andy Woods in the home goal to level the scores.

Emley continued to search for a second goal. Fox showed tremendous skill to cut inside but his shot was well saved and Greg Pearce's goalbound follow up was deflected over the cross bar.

On 82 minutes Emley almost got the winning goal that they deserved. Staniforth powered the ball back across goal after a free kick and Reeves just couldn't keep his header low enough as it cannoned back out off the cross bar.

On 87 minutes the lively Andy Wright headed just wide at the far post after Fox's cross as Emley couldn't find the second goal and the game ended in a draw.

W - Emley : Woods, Wood, Staniforth, Chattoe (c), Pearce, Thompson, Muller, Fox, Norbury (Hoyle 79), Reeves, Wright (Tonks 87). Sub Not Used : Kenworthy.

Report by Phil Rann

At least the losing run has ended, although this should have been a clear three points. The first half was played between two sides that both looked to be short of confidence and didn't want to give anything away, and although the visitors missed a clear cut chance, it had 0-0 written all over it until half time.

W-Emley started the second half much brighter than their opponents, and the once again excellent Damian Reeves had a great run and shot saved after good work from Wright and Norbury to set up the chance. Once again Wright was involved in most of the home side's chances, and the next one brought a goal. More good work by Reeves set him clear of the defence, and as the keeper came to meet him, he coolly slotted the ball past him to his left and into the empty net. Now could W-Emley press on and score a second for the first time since about 1673 and put the three points safe. Fox missed a sitter after more good work by Reeves, who unselfishly passed to Fox instead of shooting himself. It was unfortunately, the wrong choice, and W-Emley were made to regret this, as well as they were made to regret Adam Muller's shot from six yards that was straight at the keeper. From this attack, Bradford went down the other end and scored. The scorer was a former Emley man, and the only player that looked interested for the visitors all night. He had scored with their first, and only chance of the second period.

There was still time for Fox to control brilliantly and force another good save from the keeper and Reeves to hit the bar but a point would have to do. This should give us confidence going into the Radcliffe home match on Saturday.

Team: Woods, S.Wood, Staniforth, Chattoe, Pearce, Thompson, Muller, Fox, Norbury (Hoyle 77), Reeves, Wright (Tonks 82).
Sub Not Used: Kenworthy.

Attendance: 153.

Pearce and Chattoe were excellent tonight, just shows the importance of having a good defence (not Wray or Beck) and midfield. Muller looked missing in the centre of midfield again, but as Thompson was playing at the back, PD had little other option to play him there unless he played Tonks there. Norbury looked tired in the second half and so did Thompson, but the performance was much better tonight.

Oh, and will Fox ever beat the first man with a free-kick or corner?

Nov 12th Radcliffe Borough v W Emley

Match postponed. Some W - Emley arrived before finding out - and not for the first time at Radcliffe!!
Nov 9th Maltby Main v W Emley

MALTBY MAIN 1 W - EMLEY 5

November 9th 2005 Report by Dan Brownhill

W - Emley progressed through to the next stage of the Sheffield Senior Cup with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Maltby Main at Muglet Lane.

Emley were the first to threaten in the seventh minute, Damien Reeves heading just over the cross bar from Andy Wright's cross. Maltby then created a couple of chances of their own. Jamie Williams fired just over after bursting into the penalty area and Andy Jones found space but fired straight at Andy Woods in the Emley goal.

Emley took the lead on 14 minutes. Paul Staniforth sent in an excellent cross which asked just too much of Adam Muller. The ball fell to Mick Norbury at the far post who showed good composure to take his time and finish well from close range.

The lead was doubled two minutes later. Maltby keeper Peter Adnitt just clipped Reeves as he went past him and the referee pointed to the spot. Andy Wright made no mistake with the penalty.

On 20 minutes Christian Fox curled a free kick just wide after Muller had been brought down.

Emley increased their advantage to three goals on 23 minutes. Fox's excellent run found Reeves down the right whose low cross was converted in classic fashion by Norbury.

Emley were 4-0 up on 34 minutes. Reeves battled to the byline and pulled the ball back to leave Wright with a simple tap in for his second goal of the game.

Maltby pulled a goal back from the penalty spot right on half time after Greg Pearce had fouled Williams. Chris Dickman coolly sent Woods the wrong way.

With the game practically already over at half time the second half was a much quieter affair.

Substitute Ian Dring nipped in for Maltby on 47 minutes but Woods finally grabbed the ball at the second attempt.

On 62 minutes Muller put in Fox for Emley, but his driven effort was superbly saved by Adnitt.

The fifth goal came on 65 minutes. Substitute Robert Tonks battled well to win the ball, Steve Kenworthy headed on and Reeves was left to slot the ball past Adnitt from close range to seal the Emley victory.

Maltby Main : Adnitt, Wesley (Davies 46), Clayton, Drennan (c), Sykes, Winter, Glarvey (Kay 46), Wood, Jones (Dring 46), Williams, Dickman.

W - Emley : Woods, Wood, Staniforth (Wray 67), Chattoe (c), Pearce, Thompson, Muller, Fox, Norbury (Kenworthy 55), Reeves, Wright (Tonks 51).

Nov 1st W Emley v Blyth Spartans

W - EMLEY 0 BLYTH SPARTANS  3
November 5th 2005 by Dan Brownhill

W - Emley slumped to fifth consecutive league defeat after visitors Blyth scored
three times in the last half hour of the game.

Blyth were the first to threaten in the first minute of an even first half. Bell nipped in
between the Emley defenders but his low shot was well saved by Afandiyev,
returning in goal. Emley's first chance came on 12 minutes. Wright's cross
was just too far in front of the stretching Reeves who couldn't get enough power on
his header and the ball went harmlessly wide.

McCabe's shot on the turn on 18 minutes tested Afandiyev but the Emley stopper
was up to the task making a superb save in a rare first half chance.

Emley attempted to make a break through before half time. On 33 minutes Norbury
blasted wide from close range on the stretch after an almighty scramble in the Blyth
penalty area. Then on 38 minutes a Norbury effort was well blocked and a minute
later Wright's header was well saved by Turns.

The second half saw more action at both ends of the pitch. On 48 minutes Reeves
battled his way through but fired over from a tight angle. Blyth then had a good spell.
First Snowden headed a corner just wide before Dale opened the scoring after
beating the offside trap and placing a cool finish past Afandiyev on the hour.
Five minutes later Bell's driving run took him clear of the Emley defence but he
blasted the ball into the side netting from a tight angle.

Emley tried to get an equaliser but could not find the finishing touch. Reeves'
powerful run took him to the by-line on 71 minutes but his cross was just too high
for Norbury and fell awkwardly for Muller behind him.  On 75 minutes Christian
Fox's corner was headed just wide by centre back Staniforth before disaster struck
for Emley. WIlliams' cross in from a right wing free kick evaded everyone and bounced
into the bottom corner of the net to give Blyth a two goal lead on 77 minutes.

Emley continued to press forward but to no avail. Substitute Hoyle headed straight
at Turns from a Staniforth long throw on 83 minutes before Blyth wrapped up the
game with their third goal. Dale got the better of Wray and raced clear before
rounding Afandiyev and slotting the ball into the open net. Emley couldn't find a
consolation goal despite their best efforts. Turns came and missed a Simon Wood
cross on 87 minutes and Muller hooked the ball back across but Hoyle and
Kenworthy couldn't get the ball under contol quick enough and the chance was
wasted.  In the last minute Muller turned inside and fired in a low drive which was
well saved by Turns diving low to his right, Reeves skipped past the defence but saw
his close range effort well saved and Staniforth headed a Fox corner just over at the
far post as the score remained 0-3.

W Emley v Blyth Spartans Report by Phil Rann

Well 3-0 probably isn't fair but if we (I mean Wray and Afindived) keep making
mistakes at the back and not scoring goals, we're not going to win so many are we?

Today, we needed something after losing four league games on the bounce, and we
had the better of the play in the first half, with good chances falling to Mick Norbury,
who blazed wide with his left foot with the goal gaping, and Andy Wright, whose
header was well saved by the keeper.

But Blyth had threatened in the first minute, a ball through a gap between the two
central defenders that was big enough to get four double-decker buses through nearly
resulted in a goal but the shot was straight at Afindiyev. The rest of the first half was
uneventful except for some excellent runs down the left by Wright which led to poor
crosses and no-one finishing the good ones. Fox crossed about ten balls in during
the match; when I say cross, I mean get headed away by the first man all ten times.
Right-back Simon Wood put one or two excellent crosses in during the first half, and
both led to chances (Norbury and Wright); Norbury after comical defending after it
took Blyth four chances to not clear, and Wright when the smallest man on the park
beat the defender to the header which was well saved.

But W-Emley are the kings of comical defending this season (again without Woody)
and Wray was keen to show the crowd of 131 what he could do when he allowed
Blyth striker Robert Dale to stroll through the gap and place past Afindiyev, leading
to arguments between both Wray and the goalkeeper (just for the record, Wray was
playing Dale onside otherwise it would not have been a goal). Afindiyev too was soon
to show us how good he was at watching a 40-yard free kick out wide pass him into
the bottom corner. His reasoning could be that Wray and Staniforth were in his way
when the ball came across, in which case it is their fault as no-one touched the ball
when it came across and it hardly came across at any pace.

Norbury and Dale had both missed golden opportunities before Blyth's opener from
free-headers; Norbury from a Wright cross which was headed well wide, and it was
the same story at the other end with Dale.

Emley started to play better after the second but it was too little too late. good to
see Thompson back in the squad coming off the bench. Goal number three was a
breakaway from an Emley attack, and Wray again played Dale onside and let him
sidestep past Afindiyev and place into the net.

Damian Reeves then used good skill to go past two Blyth defenders and shot from 18 yards but it was well saved and held on to by the keeper. The lively substitute Matthew Hoyle shot wide, and Staniforth headed just over from a corner before the referee blew his whistle and put the home supporters out of their misery.

Emley: Afindiyev, S.Wood, Tonks, Chattoe (Thompson 65), Wray, Staniforth, Fox,
Muller, Norbury (Kenworthy 73), Reeves, Wright (Hoyle 65).

In Peter Matthew's comments in today's programme, he said that most of what was said on the forum was nonsense, and that it was supposed to be used for constructive criticism and not for slagging people off. Well actually the forum is for letting people know what is happening in the club as the supporters don't find out from anywhere else. The programme notes do nothing but state the obvious, saying that we need more money and more fans, but is anything being done to promote the club in any way. The only reason stupid rumours and comments are posted on the forum is because no-one from the club lets us know what's going on. Teams like Farsley and Frickley have given out hundreds of free tickets to local schools and local teams to come to games, we haven't done this. The appointment of Jane Townsend, what has she done? There should be something in the programme about what she is trying to do to get new fans and promote the club. Other clubs let their supporters know what is going on in the club, and with the exception of Ossett Town and perhaps Lincoln United, they all get bigger crowds than us. Wigan is a rugby area, hasn't stopped them getting around the town to promote the club and letting people know when they are playing and giving kids free tickets etc. According to the board outside the ground, we were playing Blyth Spartens today and Frickley United last season, we are the laughing stock of the league. I know to an extent, the future of the club depends on its success (and we need to get rid of Wray and Afindiyev to have any chance of success) but surely you can get the supporters in first, then the money comes with it, which then brings better players, and then brings success and more support, and so on. It works in a cycle, and at the moment, I'm afraid to say, we are on a downward spiral.

 Missed chances prove so costly
Nov 7 2005  By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W - EMLEY suffered a fifth successive UniBond League defeat as Blyth boss            Harry Dunn plotted a follow-up to his side's earlier FA Cup win at Belle Vue.
Blyth beat Paul David's side 2-1 in the first qualifying round back in September, and  returned on Saturday to claim three League points with a trio of second-half goals.
Striker Robert Dale grabbed two of them as W - Emley, fourth in the Premier
Division in September, slipped to 12th.

Home goalkeeper Farhad Afandiyev blocked early efforts by Richard Forster and
Chris McCabe before his side came to life on the half hour when Mick Norbury
unleashed a cracking drive which fizzed across the face the goal

Damien Reeves, a hat trick scorer in the midweek League Cup win over Bishop
Auckland, found space after 48 minutes.
But his curling shot glided over the bar
and five minutes later, when he set up Norbury, Peter Snowdon stepped in to
clear for a corner.
Andy Wright's flag kick provided Norbury with a free header,
but he guided it wide.

W Emley, watched by 131, were to be cruelly punished for missing those chances.

Blyth took the lead against the run of play after 61 minutes when Neil Wilkinson's
long punt upfield fell kindly to tall striker Dale, who took one touch to control the ball
before burying the opening goal.

Gareth Williams' free-kick after 77 minutes, some 25 yards out, appeared innocuous
until it squirmed through the defence and past the unsighted Afandiyev for the
second. Dale got his second five minutes from time when he latched on to a long ball
before drawing the goalkeeper and slotting into an empty net.

W - Emley: Afandiyev, Wood, Tonks, Chattoe (Thompson, 66mins), Wray, Staniforth,
Fox, Muller, Norbury (Kenworthy, 72mins), Reeves, Wright (Hoyle, 66mins)

Reeves on hat trick Cup form
Nov 2 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

A SECOND string W - Emley side was enough to see off UniBond League Division I strugglers Bishop Auckland in the first round of the Challenge Cup.

A hat trick by Damien Reeves was the highlight in Emley's 4-2 victory in front of a crowd of just 55. First team regulars Lennie Curtis, Richard Chattoe and Adam Muller were all rested, with Mick Norbury, Christian Fox and Stephen Kenworthy on the bench, while Danny Trueman returned in goal.

Reeves put Emley in front on 20 minutes before Jackson levelled for Bishops on 37.
Matthew Hoyle restored Emley's lead at the break and Paul David's side secured their second round passage with further goals by Reeves on 46 and 69.

Emley will be hoping to maintain that form when they host Blyth Spartans in Saturday's Premier Division match at Belle Vue.

Result: W Emley 4 - 2 Bishop Auckland

W - Emley: Trueman, S Wood, Staniforth, Calvert, Wray, Pearce, Tonks, Watson (Fox 74mins), Hoyle, Reeves (Kenworthy 79mins), Wright. Subs not used: Norbury.

E mail sent to Unibond website - on put onto their News site

In the Unibond League Challenge Cup 1st Round tie between Wakefield - Emley and Bishop Auckland, played on Tuesday November 1st, Damian Reeves scored a hat trick.

This was the first hat trick that a W - E player had scored in a competitive game since Simeon Bambrook grabbed one in a 3 - 0 victory at Frickley Athletic on Easter Monday April 21st 2003.

The club had played 123 games without a hat trick until Reeves, a recent signing from Leeds United, ended the run and in the process became the clubs leading scorer with 6 goals.

Reeves has only started 3 games with 3 as a playing sub and  has scored 6 goals in those games compared with:

Muller 5 in 17 and 1 playing sub
and Kenworthy 2 in 18 and 3 playing subs

What a breath of fresh air!

All 3 goals last night were different in their way but natural poacher's goals

No 1 - anticipation to follow up the free kick which hit the bar and ability to get down low for it
No 2 - good work by Hoyle and unselfish to actually see there was someone in a better position. Reeves good anticipation to get in the position to tap in
No 3 Possibly hand ball but good turn and knew where the target is.

I know it was only Bishop Auckland (Northern League derby next year with Spennymoor Town?) but he looks a natural

OK he missed a sitter at Bradford but he at least gets into good positions

W E definitely need to keep him

Too early to say much about the rest of last night's team performance - Blyth will be a more realist test

W - EMLEY 4 - 2   BISHOP  AUCKLAND

Report by Dan Brownhill

WEmley recorded their first win in seven matches with a fairly comfortable 4-2 home victory over Bishop Auckland in the first round of the league cup.

Danny Trueman returned in goal after Farhad Afandiyev had broken down on his way up to the game from Coventry. Debuts were given to new signings Matthew Hoyle and Simon Wood and Emley opted to rest many regular players in Adam Muller, Steve Kenworthy, Christian Fox, Mick Norbury, Lennie Curtis, Richard Chattoe and Mark Scarsella.

Emley were the first to threaten on 13 minutes. Lee Calvert's free kick was chipped in and centre half Greg Pearce headed straight at John Mohan in the Bishop Auckland goal.

The first Emley goal arrived on 18 minutes. Calvert laid a free kick off to Simon Watson. His 25 yard drive came back out off the post and Damien Reeves was the first to react to the rebound, heading in from close range.

On 24 minutes Emley almost extended their lead. Robert Tonks' low cross in was nearly turned into his own net by Paul Campbell but he recovered and cleared the danger.

Tonks found himself through on goal on 28 minutes. He opted for power in his shot and it whistled narrowly wide of the target.

The visitors equalised on 34 minutes. Ben Jackson took the ball past Jason Wray and drove it into the bottom corner past Danny Trueman from a tight angle.

Emley were soon back in front however. On 38 minutes a short back header let in Matthew Hoyle who lofted the ball over Mohan and into the empty goal.

Emley looked to extend their lead before half time. Andy Wright's corner found the head of Damien Reeves on 40 minutes but his effort was headed off the line by the defender on the post.

On 42 minutes Emley did get the third goal. Hoyle ran clear down the right as Emley broke from a Bishop Auckland corner and laid the ball across to the unmarked Reeves who placed it into the unguarded net from close range.

Bishop Auckland almost pulled a goal back right on half time. Michael Oliver found space and fired just wide of the Emley goal from the edge of the area.

Emley started the second half brightly. On 50 minutes a low cross was diverted towards goal by Wright but Mohan saved well down low to his left.

On 64 minutes Wright sent in a deep cross but Hoyle headed the ball just wide.

Bishop Auckland had a rare chance to score on 69 minutes. Damon Robson's corner was headed just wide by captain Mark Sheeran.

A minute later, however, Emley made it 4-1. Reeves was fed the ball in the penalty area and was given time to take it down, turn and fire past Mohan from close range to complete his hat-trick.

Emley almost made it five on 79 minutes. Substitute Steve Kenworthy flicked the ball across to Wright, but his header was well saved by Mohan as he scrambled across his goal.

Bishop Auckland pulled a goal back on 81 minutes to leave the score at 4-2. Damon Robson was put clean through on goal and he lofted the ball over Trueman and into the
net.

Oct 29th Prescot Cables v W Emley

Report by Dan Brownhill

Prescot took the lead on 8 minutes. Kevin Garforth found space in the Emley penalty area and fired past Farhad Afandiyev from close range.  Emley struggled to create chances throughout the game. Their best chance of the first half came on 24 minutes when Steve Kenworthy put in Adam Muller but he fired over from a tight angle.

On 33 minutes Prescot almost doubled their lead. Afandiyev could only palm away a cross and the ball was driven towards the goal, but Lennie Curtis managed to stretch and clear the ball off the line. On 38 minutes Mark Duffy found himself clean through on goal after a defensive mistake, but his effort was deflected over.

Prescot continued to look dangerous up to half time and on 42 minutes a punt forward found Steve McEwan through on goal but his low drive was well saved by Afandiyev diving low to his left.

Emley almost equalised on 48 minutes. A long Paul Staniforth throw in found its way to Steve Kenworthy but his shot on the turn narrowly missed the target.  Prescot doubled their advantage on 50 minutes. A deep cross found Karl Connolly unmarked and he flicked his header into the net from 10 yards out.

The closest Emley came to scoring after the second goal was on 59 minutes. Christian Fox's free kick found Kenworthy via Curtis but his first time volley flew just wide. Prescot nearly added a third goal five minutes from time. Substitute Joe Feeney was put through on goal but Afandiyev saved well with his legs.

Oct 25th  W Emley v Matlock Town

October 25th 2005 Dan Brownhill's report

W - E were defeated by three goals to two against Matlock at Belle Vue after conceding twice in quick succession midway through the first half.

Emley had a great chance to take the lead in the first minute of the game. Adam Muller's low cross found its way to Christian Fox but he dragged his shot well wide from an excellent position in the penalty area.

On 10 minutes Steve Kenworthy crossed in and Mick Norbury took the ball down excellently at the far post but it rolled just too far in front of the big Emley front man and Andy Richmond in the Matlock goal was able to collect.

Matlock took the lead with their first real effort on goal on 21 minutes. Dene Cropper found himself free in the area and had time to turn and volley the ball past Farhad Afandiyev from close range.

The visitors extended their lead on 24 minutes. Gary Webster beat Afandiyev to the ball to head in a right wing corner at the near post.

On 26 minutes Emley again came close to scoring. Muller burst through down the right but his low cross was just inches in front of Norbury who was arriving at the far post and the ball rolled out for a goal kick.

Emley halved the deficit straight after half time. Muller again caused Matlock problems with a low cross and this time Norbury was on hand to convert it from close range.

On 51 minutes Emley almost equalised. Christian Fox's deep free kick was headed just wide by Muller. Fox was again the provider on 59 minutes, this time from a corner, but Jason Wray placed his header wide.

Matlock regained their two goal lead on 61 minutes. A left wing corner was pushed out by Afandiyev and Paul Riley volleyed home from 8 yards.

Ian Clarke almost made it four for Matlock on 69 minutes but his 20 yard drive came back out off the post. Matlock had a further chance two minutes later, but Simon Barraclough's chipped effort went harmlessly wide.

Emley attempted to try and get back into the game. On 80 minutes Kenworthy's deep cross was headed just wide by substitute Andy Wright.

On 86 minutes centre back Paul Staniforth's long range drive was well palmed wide by Richmond. An almighty scramble ensued in the box from the resulting corner but ended with Fox's effort been deflected over for another corner kick. Andy Wright sent in a low cross from the corner and fellow substitute Damien Reeves got in front of his marker to put the ball in the net at the near post and reduce the deficit to just a single goal.

On 89 minutes Emley almost snatched an equaliser. Ashley Beck's right wing cross was headed just over by Mark Scarsella. Then on 90 minutes a Staniforth long throw in found its way to Beck but his chipped shot went just wide of the far post as Matlock held on for the victory.

Result: W Emley 2 - 3 Matlock Town

Phil Rann's report

Call that a defence? Beck, Wray, Staniforth and Smith. Staniforth the only player pulling his weight. Beck was awful and Wray was just as bad. Smith has got pace down the left. And that is one pace. Slow. Scarsella on the bench, Fox and Tonks in midfield - why not look at the performances earlier in the season and see we were winning games with Fox and Tonks at right and left back respectively. OK we have big problems with midfield with Thompson and Kettlewell out, but why was Wright on the bench AGAIN?!!! He tries 100% and is the arguably the best player of this season behind Woody (we're still missing him folks!) but on the bench again. So Kenworthy in midfield with Fox and Tonks. Too lightweight, only Chattoe with any real commitment tonight in midfield. Muller and Norbury both had good games to say they had absolutely no support. Norbury won every header in the first half, but there was no one there, people have seen us play, they know we play better football ON THE FLOOR and NOT IN THE AIR. We brought Muller off after 70 minutes, answers on a postcode why!!! Reeves came on and looked OK, scored a neat finish with four minutes left to make it 2-3. But this game should have been over in the first half. Norbury and Fox both missed 'sitters' (no lie) in the first minute from a left-wing cross by Muller, and Norbury somehow managed to foul up another golden opportunity before Matlock went ahead from a very suspect offside shout but I think it was just onside, just. The second goal was a lesson on how to take a corner when its windy and peeing down, hang it up in the air and test the keeper. The keeper failed the test and conceded his 13th goal in 4 games. Still time in the first half for Emley to foul up another great opportunity when Norbury watched a Muller shot roll wide rather than sliding to put the ball in the net. However, Norbury got us back in it in the third minute of the second half with a good finish, and Staniforth had a shot fly back off the post as we nearly made it 2-2. But then we went backwards. The midfield went missing, probably to help the members of the circus at the back, and only Chattoe (who received a bollocking after every pass that he sent astray (about five in the entire match)) was playing well. Matlock scored again, another lesson on how to take a corner by hanging it up in the air and waiting for the keeper to make an error. He duly obliged for goal number 14. Muller then departed for Reeves, but Matlock were running rings around our midfield and defence. One of their players was unlucky to see a shot smash the post as the Fleetwood farce looked like repeating itself. Finally, we got our act together, and after 80 minutes, we had our first shot from outside the box which is what we should have been doing all night. Staniforth's fine effort from 30 yards was brilliantly saved by the Matlock keeper. From the resulting corner, Reeves nipped in at the near post to make it 2-3. Three minutes left, and still time for Beck to chip and Wright to head over.

Team: Afindived, Beck, Smith (Wright 71), Chattoe, Wray, Staniforth, Muller (Reeves 73), Fox, Norbury, Kenworthy (Scarsella 79), Tonks.

Attendance: 138 on a foul evening (only 43 at Ossett)

Quickfire double sinks David's Emley
Oct 26 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

TWO quick first-half goals by Matlock gave hosts W - Emley a mountain to climb in the UniBond League Premier Division clash. But they almost made it!

Early chances were missed by Emley's Christian Fox and Mick Norbury, while Matlock took the lead with their first real effort on goal on 23 minutes.Dean Cropper found himself free in the area and had time to turn and volley the ball past Farhad Afandived from close range. Two minutes later Gary Webster beat the keeper to the ball to head in a right-wing corner at the near post.

Norbury pulled a goal back straight after the break and Emley should have equalised from chances falling to Adam Muller and Jason Wray. But Matlock added a third on 60 minutes when Paul Riley volleyed in from eight yards to make it 3-1 for the Derbyshire club before substitute Damien Reeves pulled a goal back on 86 minutes.

Despite a late flurry, Emley could not force an equaliser.

Result: W Emley 2 - 3 Matlock Town

W - Emley: Afandived, Beck, Smith (Wright 63mins), Chattoe, Wray, Staniforth, Muller (Reeves 69mins), Fox, Norbury, Kenworthy (Scarsella 83mins), Tonks.

  Smith's return is top tonic
Oct 25 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

SHAUN SMITH is back at W - Emley!

The 34-year-old former Crewe and Hull player, whose lengthy League career was kick-started by a spell at the UniBond club under Gerry Quinn in the early Nineties, will make his first Belle Vue appearance against Matlock Town tonight (7.45).
Also in action will be centre-back Jason Wray, who has signed on loan from Harrogate Town.

Smith had just been released by Halifax when Quinn signed him, and a string of solid displays at left-back, including an FA Cup first-round appearance against Bolton, quickly brought the attention of other League clubs. He joined Crewe in December 1991 and as well as Hull, played for Stockport, Carlisle, Rochdale and York, totting up more than 500 games in the process. These days he is playing on the left side of midfield.

Former Boston and Ilkeston defender Greg Pearce, who played alongside Smith and Wray in Saturday's 2-1 loss at Bradford PA, is rested tonight, when Paul Staniforth is likely to start the game.

Paul David's side aim to bounce back from successive defeats by Whitby and Park Avenue which have left them eighth in the UniBond Premier Division. David, who now has a 24-strong squad, said: "It's frustrating we have not had a settled side due to injuries.
"I've only been able to field an unchanged side once."But the positive is that it gives the younger players a great chance to perform."

Squad: Afandived, Beck, Smith, Chattoe, Wright, Staniforth, Scarsella, Wray, Tonks, Fox, Muller, Reeves, Norbury, Kenworthy.
Oct 22nd Bradford PA v W Emley

October 22nd 2005 Dan Brownhill

W - Emley were beaten 2-1 after a goal deep into injury time for home side Bradford Park Avenue at the Horsfall Stadium.

The first half was a quiet affair in terms of chances. Bradford went close first with a header from Alex Nesovic on 14 minutes that went just over after a Dean Calcutt cross.

A Calcutt cross again caused problems for Emley on 21 minutes as they could only watch as a bullet header came back off the upright. Farhad Afandived was alert to the rebound, however, making a good save to push the ball out for a corner.

The game was much different in the second half with both teams creating numerous chances.

Tom Agus drove a free kick just wide on 48 minutes and then on 51 a mistake by Emley's new signing Jason Wray let in Walsh but he fired just the wrong side of the post.

On 52 minutes Emley almost took the lead. Adam Muller's low cross eventually found its way to Damien Reeves but his shot was well pushed onto the post by Avenue keeper Mark Wilkinson.

A minute later it was again a low cross from Muller that caused problems for Bradford. This time Reeves was unmarked six yards out but he placed his first time effort wide when it seemed easier to score.

Muller again got to the byline for Emley on 61 minutes but his excellent pull back was stabbed over by Steve Kenworthy.

On 67 minutes Robert Tonks won the ball for Emley and fed Kenworthy. The Emley striker tried his luck from 20 yards but his shot was deflected and well saved by Wilkinson.

Muller again caused problems for the home side with a low cross on 69 minutes. This time Robert Tonks met the ball unmarked but scuffed his shot wide.

Bradford took the lead on 72 minutes. A mishit shot found its way to Tom Greaves who put the ball in past Afandived from close range.

On 79 minutes Bradford almost extended their lead. Greaves found himself one on one with Afandived but placed his shot the wrong side of the post.

Emley came close to an equaliser with nine minutes left. Substitute Andy Wright's shot found its way to fellow substitute Mick Norbury via Muller but a Bradford defender deflected the ball over the cross bar and out for a corner.

Norbury again came close to equalising on 82 minutes. His bullet header was headed off the line by a defender and Andy Wright's follow up was well charged down.

Norbury found Emley's equaliser on 84 minutes. Again a Muller cross caused the danger for Bradford and this time Norbury got in front of his marker and powered a header into the net.

Bradford however snatched victory deep into stoppage time. Substitute Mark Scarsella lunged at the ball and missed leaving space in the Emley penalty area for Walsh to put the ball in from close range.

Result: Bradford PA 2 - 1 W Emley

Phil Rann's report

We do a good book on how to lose a game. We missed three sitters before Bradford PA scored after 70 odd minutes, and then Norbury came on and we looked like scoring. He did after 85 minutes. Then we gave a free-kick straight to the opposition, who took advantage and scored with the last kick of the game.
BUT WE RAN THE GAME AGAIN. Chattoe was class, Tonks and Fox played well (until Fox gave ball away for winning goal). But defence was awful, especially no.6. It was only when Norbury, Wright and Scarsella came on that we looked like scoring. Reeves missed a sitter when it was still 0-0 when he tried to flick it in rather than trying to put it in the net. Tonks put the ball out for a throw-in when he should have scored, and then Reeves hit straight at the keeper when Muller should have had a penalty.
Another three points lost, another crap defensive performance WITHOUT WOODY (Bradford were just as bad as us in defence). We are becoming a mid-table side when we should be easily in top 5. Matlock at home on Tuesday is now a MUST-WIN GAME.

Calcutt should have got sent off, when he went through the back of Tonks after already being booked, but the referee didn't see it, and the linesman gave it.

Team: Afindived, Beck, Shaun Smith, Chattoe (Norbury 79), Pearse (Wright 79), Rae, Tonks, Fox, Muller, Reeves (Scarsella 79), Kenworthy.

SUBS BROUGHT ON FAR TOO LATE.

Dismay for David after late stunner
Oct 24 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W - EMLEY were hit by an injury-time sucker punch from Danny Walsh as Bradford Park Avenue gained a 2-1 derby win at the Horsfall Stadium Yet again, Paul David's side were left to rue missed chances as they slipped a place to eighth in the UniBond League Premier Division. Boss Paul David said: "We had the better of the first half and started the second just as strongly but we allowed Bradford to get back into it and they enjoyed a good 20-minute spell and made the most of it. "Yet again, we failed to take our numerous chances and are being punished by teams who create less but take their opportunities."

Bradford went close on 14 minutes with a header from Alex Nesovic, who was set up by former Emley favourite Dean Calcutt. Calcutt caused more problems after 21 minutes with a bullet header which hit a post.On-loan York City goalkeeper Farhad Afandived pushed the rebound to safety.

Emley should have taken the lead after 52 minutes when Adam Muller's low cross found Damien Reeves, but his shot was turned onto a post by Mark Wilkinson.

A minute later another low cross from Muller picked out Reeves. He was unmarked six yards out but struck his first-time effort wide when it seemed easier to score.

Stephen Kenworthy also squandered chances created by the hard-working Muller. And Rob Tonks also found a great opening on 69 minutes but scuffed his shot wide.

Bradford punished those misses by taking the lead on 72 minutes. Impressive play between Calcutt and Nesovic set up Tom Greaves, who hooked home his seventh goal of the season.

David threw on attacking midfielder Andy Wright and striker Mick Norbury after 79 minutes. Norbury had a shot cleared off the line, but the veteran striker wasn't to be denied and snatched an equaliser on 83 minutes, planting home a strong header from close range.

But Avenue recovered well and, deep into injury time, a poor clearance by Christian Fox fell to Walsh, who fired home.

W - Emley: Afandived, Beck, Smith, Chattoe (Wright, 79mins), Pearce (Scarsella, 81), Wray, Tonks, Fox, Muller, Reeves (Norbury, 79), Kenworthy.

Oct 19th Whitby Town v W Emley

October 20th 2005 Dan Brownhill report

Wakefield-Emley were beaten 4-2 by Whitby Town in a game full of chances at the Turnbull Ground.

Emley took the lead after just 22 seconds. Damien Reeves ran at the Whitby defence before losing out to a defender. Mick Norbury won the ball back, stabbing it through to Reeves who slotted it into the corner of the net from close range.

Whitby equalised on 11 minutes. Aaron Wilford nipped in and forced the ball past Farhad Afandiyev from close range after the Emley defence had failed to clear.

The home team then took the lead on 14 minutes. A left wing corner was powerfully headed home by Wilford at the far post for his second goal of the game.

Reeves continued to be Emley's danger man but it was Whitby who extended their lead on 17 minutes. A shot came back off the post and Scott Nicholson put the ball in from close range.

Carl Richards, Craig Veart, Wilford and Anthony Ormerod all went close for Whitby before half time as the home side continued to look the better team.

In the second half Emley brought on Steve Kenworthy and switched Norbury to centre back and looked a better outfit.

Whitby were the first to go close in the second period however, Phil Brumwell striking a post from 15 yards out.

Emley reduced the arrears on 52 minutes. Adam Muller's low cross was cleverly back heeled into the net by Reeves for his second goal.

On 63 minutes Muller nearly levelled matters, but his drive went just the wrong side of the upright.

A minute later Whitby regained their two goal advantage. Wilford beat the offside trap and took the ball round Afandiyev before eventually placing the ball into the net.

Kenworthy, Reeves and Muller all went close for Emley but they were unable to score a third goal and the score remained 4-2.

Statto's report

Great start 1 - 0 by Reeves straight from kick off - lucky to see it.

Kimikazi defending then allowed Whitby to equalise

Great long corner to the far post and the striker looked as if was on stilts he rose so high to give Whitby lead

Then shot hit inside of post and bounced along the line to be put in at the far post 1 - 3

New keeper kept us in the game up to 1/2 time with some superb blocks and a great tip over the bar - could easily have been 1 - 6 at half time

Changed things around at 1/2 time.

Beck from centreback to right full back
Norbury from centre forward to centre back
Calvert off replaced by Kenworthy
Fox pushed into midfield

(basically what the few W E supporters were saying in the bar)

Started 2nd half like a train and a great opportunistic goal by Reeves 2 - 3

Had more changes to equalise but then defence tried to play offside with Norbury stepping forward. Linesman didn't raise the flag and Whitby raced away for the killer 4th goal. Couldn't comment on the decision but the W E defence were splitting blood about it

Beck and Curtis as centre back partnership is not the answer.

Tonks and Scarsella unavailable

Squad (By position):

Afan
Fox Beck Curtis Staniforth
Muller Calvert Chattoe Wright
Norbury Reeves

Subs: Whitfield (on for Beck) Kenworthy (on for Calvert) Trueman!! (not used)

Overall, we need to sort out the centre backs - but definitely showed spirit in the 2nd half

Reeves haul not enough
Oct 20 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

NEW frontman Damien Reeves made a major impact on his full debut for W - Emley. But the former Leeds man's double couldn't help his new club avoid a 4-2 defeat at Whitby.

Reeves was outdone by home favourite Aron Wilford, who bagged his second hat trick in as many matches. As a result, Paul David's side are seventh in the UniBond League Premier Division, with Whitby now two places behind.

W - Emley got off to a great start, with Reeves taking advantage of space and time in the home penalty area to sidefoot home in the first minute. But by the 17th, they were 3-1 down. Wilford produced a cool finish to level, then headed home from a 14th-minute corner. And home skipper Scott Nicholson fired home after his initial shot was blocked by Farhad Afandiyev, the on-loan Azerbaijani goalkeeper.

Adam Muller came close early in the second half, then crossed for Reeves to chalk up his second with a cheeky back-heel after 53 minutes. But the busy Wilford completed his hat trick in the 64th minute.

Result: Whitby Town 4 - 2 W Emley

Oct 15th W Emley v Fleetwood Town   (FA Trophy)

October 15th 2005 Dan Brownhill's report

W Emley were well beaten by five goals to nil in the first round of the FA Trophy at Belle Vue by first division title chasers Fleetwood Town.

Emley were the first to go close in the first minute of the match. Adam Muller passed the ball into Mick Norbury who in turn pushed it through to Steve Kenworthy but the Emley striker dragged his shot wide of the far post.

On 15 minutes Emley again should have scored. Andy Wright's deep cross found Muller at the far post but his first time shot whistled straight back across the face of the goal.

Fleetwood almost took the lead on 20 minutes when Michael Birch's curling free kick was well tipped wide by new Emley goalkeeper Farhad Afandived. 3 minutes later they did take the lead. A right wing corner was flicked on at the near post and Ian Stevens thrashed the ball into the net from close range.

The visitors added to their lead on 30 minutes after breaking clear from an Emley corner. Stevens' low cross was turned in by Stuart Beech from close range.

Emley almost reduced the arrears just before half time. Christian Fox put in Muller on 44 minutes but he placed his shot the wrong side of the far post. Then right on half time Ashley Beck's 25 yard drive was well tipped over by Andy Banks in the away goal.

Emley had a good spell at the start of the second half. Mick Norbury's header on 56 minutes was saved by Banks following Fox's corner. Norbury again went close with a header on 62 minutes but this time he placed his effort just over the cross bar.

From then on it was all Fleetwood. On 71 minutes Stevens burst up to the edge of the area and smashed a superb volley in off the underside of the cross bar to register his sides third goal.

On 75 minutes Fleetwood scored their fourth. Substitute Richard Allen broke clear down the left, got past Ashley Beck, and sent a low cross into the penalty area which Joe Booth converted.

The fifth goal came on 81 minutes. The lively substitute Allen's driving run finished with him drilling the ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

Fleetwood shatter W Emley's hopes
Oct 17 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W EMLEY'S hopes of a good run in the FA Trophy were shattered by UniBond League First Division high-fliers Fleetwood in round one.

Tony Greenwood's promotion hopefuls were two up at the break through Ian Stevens (23 minutes) and Stuart Beech (30). And it got worse in the second half for Paul David's Premier Division team.

"For the first 20 minutes we played fluid, passing football and had them in trouble, but then we just folded like a pack of cards," admitted the manager. "But I'm confident this result was just a one-off, a bad day at the office."

The home side were left to rue missed chances. In the first minute, Adam Muller laid the ball off to Mick Norbury, who flicked it through to Stephen Kenworthy, but he dragged his shot wide. Muller then missed a great chance on 15 minutes, before Stevens struck, beating Azerbaijan Under 21 goalkeeper Sarhad Afandibed, who is on loan from York City.

Fleetwood doubled their lead when Beech converted Stevens' cross. Home pair Muller and Ashley Beck missed chances before the break.

In the second half, Fleetwood continued to take the game to their hosts, with Stevens grabbing his second on 71 minutes with a dipping shot which went in off the bar. Joe Booth made it four after 75 minutes when he fired home substitute Richard Allen's cross. And Allen finished things off with a low drive in the 81st minute.

W Emley manager David dreaming of top run in FA Trophy

Oct 14 2005
By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W EMLEY boss Paul David is plotting a rare FA Trophy run, starting with victory in tomorrow's first-round home tie against Fleetwood Town (3.00).

David, now in his third season at the helm, admits a good cup run is something that has eluded him. "The Trophy is the premier competition for teams at our level," he said.
"The FA Cup carries all the prestige, but the FA Trophy is a true competition between all non-League clubs."

David added: "Last Saturday, when we came back from two goals down at AFC Telford to win 3-2, was pleasing because I think that is the first time we've made a comeback like that. "Now, I want to put together a good cup run and it all starts tomorrow."

W Emley bowed out of the Trophy in the second round last year, beaten 1-0 at home by Redditch after beating West Yorkshire rivals Farsley Celtic in round one.

Fleetwood could provide tricky opposition. Tony Greenwood's side are second in the UniBond First Division, sharing the lead on 24 points with top dogs Mossley and Colwyn Bay.

UniBond Premier club W Emley have released long-serving defender Nicky Wood and striker James Nestor, while York have recalled loan goalkeeper David Stockdale.
David is in talks with York about bringing in an Azerbaijan Under 21 goalkeeper, with Danny Trueman expected to be out injured for up to three weeks.

Other sidelined players include midfielder Marc Thompson (groin), who is out for month and defender Paul Staniforth (ankle, three weeks), while Richard Kettlewell, who broke down just two minutes after coming on as substitute in Tueday's 1-1 draw against Leek, is due to see a knee specialist.

Newly-signed striker Mick Norbury will face Fleetwood.

Oct 11th W Emley v Lincoln United

October 11th Phil Rann report

Another game where we created chance after chance after chance with nothing to show for it. Another game where a terrible piece of defending led to giving away a 1-0 lead to not the best side in the league. Another game when Muller played in midfield. WHY?

W Emley:

Stockdale - Good handling as always, but made a terrible decision to come for the ball late in the second half which almost led to us going behind.
Fox - Excellent free-kick for second home game running, and got down the right flank well, especially in the first half and late on. Still suspect in the air, though.
Tonks - Missing in first half, improved as game went on.
Chattoe - Excellent. Got stuck in and great passing and dribbling in the middle of the park, keeps the lads talking.
Curtis - Not his best game but some important blocks in the first half and also good in the air. Can't be blamed for playing with Beck at the back.
Beck - His mistake led to goal, and he had threatened to do it for ten minutes previously. The sooner Woody is back the better.
Muller - Why is he playing in midfield when he scored 20+ goals last season. Played on his own with little support down the right in the second half, but looks low on confidence, not one of his better performances.
Calvert - Didn't look bad but went missing at times, looked fairly settled with Chattoe in midfield.
Norbury - Best man on the park in the first half, his nod-ons and flicks were too clever for the likes of Kenworthy and Muller. One to keep definitely.
Kenworthy - Was he playing? The normal 100% man was non-existant in the second half. Not helped by balls being lumped forward at regular intervals.
Wright - Best man on the park, especially in the second half. Fantastic runs down the left-wing but his crosses were too good. Got a bollocking from Sharpe for his poor crossing but that was only because Kenworthy and co. were too lazy to get in the box.

Subs: Kettlewell injured soon after coming on for the second time in as many appearances.
Watson was a waste of time for the fourth time in as many appearances.
Whitfield brought on too late to make a difference, should have come on ten minutes earlier for Kenworthy.

Attendance: 147.

W EMLEY v LINCOLN UNITED

October 11th 2005 Report by Dan Brownhill

W - Emley were held to a draw by mid table Lincoln at Belle Vue after a poor second half performance.

In a quiet opening period of the game, Emley were the first to threaten on 6 minutes. Ben Dixon slipped in the Lincoln defence and let in Adam Muller but the Emley striker wasted the chance as his finish was saved by Gareth Jones in the away goal and deflected out for a corner.

Lincoln's first attempt came on 8 minutes. A David Gilbert free kick was headed just wide by Dixon who got up well above the Emley defence.

On 16 minutes Emley were gifted another chance after Jones' poor clearance but Steve Kenworthy could only fire the ball straight back at him with the goal gaping.

Muller put in new signing Lee Calvert on 18 minutes but he dragged his shot well wide of the goal as Emley enjoyed their best spell of the game.

Emley took the lead on 20 minutes. Muller was brought down by two Lincoln defenders at the edge of the penalty area and Christian Fox curled the subsequent free kick into the far corner of the net.

Lincoln almost equalised on 35 minutes. Captain Brendan McDaid saw his header well saved by David Stockdale and the follow up effort was tame and easy for the Emley stopper.

Right on half time Emley almosted added to their lead. Fox's left wing corner found its way to Mick Norbury at the far post but his first time volley flew just wide. Then Andy Wright skipped through the Lincoln defence and fired just the wrong side of the post as the score remained one nil at half time.

In the second half Lincoln had by far the better chances. On 49 minutes Dixon volleyed just over at the far post.

On 61 minutes Matt Roche saw his effort well saved by Stockdale and the follow up shot was deflected wide by an Emley defender.

A minute later Lincoln equalised. A mistake by Ashley Beck let in Roche who lofted the ball over Stockdale as he came to meet him and into the net.

Emley did little to threaten a winner until the final few minutes. On 86 minutes Robert Tonks saw his long range drive well saved by the Lincoln keeper who got down well to his right.

On 87 minutes Steve Kenworthy broke through down the left but his effort was again well saved by Jones in the Lincoln goal.

Emley will look to produce a much better performance against Fleetwood Town as they attempt to progress through to the next round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.

Result: W Emley 1 - 1 Lincoln United

Fox gem is not enough
Oct 12 2005
By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

A PEACH of a free kick by Christian Fox was not enough to seal the points as W Emley had to share the spoils in a 1-1 UniBond League draw with Lincoln United.

Fox's 20-yard free kick, which he curled inside the far post leaving goalkeeper Gareth Jones no chance, was cancelled out on 62 minutes after former Town academy product Ashley Beck misguided a header into the path of Matt Roche, who fired past David Stockdale.

The match, seen by 147 supporters, also heralded the return of former Emley striker Mick Norbury, from Goole Town, who boss Paul David has been eyeing for some time.
PD said: "With the injuries we've endured this season, particularly to Marc Thompson, it was important to sign a player who would give us a presence - and Micky Norbury does just that."

Emley's injury woes increased when midfielder Richard Kettlewell, returning from a knee injury, broke down just two minutes after coming on as a second half substitute.
Emley, who remain seventh in the Premier Division, failed to make first half chances count and at 1-0 up they were always vulnerable. Stephen Kenworthy, Richard Chattoe and Adam Muller all spurned chances after taking up good positions while Lincoln finally rose to the challenge after the break.

Sam Wilkinson blasted over the bar from close range on 49 minutes and, after the injury to Kettlewell, Lincoln took advantage of Emley's re-adjustments to attack.
John Hawley's cross screamed across Emley's six yard box with their strikers just failing to convert a winner on 69 minutes while Andy Wright led Emley's counter-attacks, Norbury inches off converting a late cross.

Result: W Emley 1 - 1 Lincoln United

W Emley: Stockdale, Fox, Tonks, Chattoe, Curtis, Beck, Muller, Calvert (Kettlewell, 54mins; Watson 56mins), Norbury, Kenworthy (Whitfield, 90mins), Wright.

Oct 8th AFC Telford United v W Emley

October 8th 2005 by Dan Brownhill

W - Emley came from behind to beat Telford at the Bucks Head Stadium in what must be the most entertaining match they have played in this season.

Telford took the lead in the 10th minute. The ever lively Davion Hamilton capitalised on a poor pass from Robert Tonks to nip in and slot the ball into the bottom corner past David Stockdale in the Emley goal.

On 28 minutes Luke McNally worked his way past Andy Wright and blasted his shot against an Emley defender. Telford's enthusiastic appeals for handball were turned away by the referee.

On 32 minutes Telford extended their lead as Hamilton scored his second of the game. His 20 yard effort was driven hard and low into the net past Stockdale, who perhaps should have done better.

Despite Telford's two goal lead, Emley always looked to have the beating of the Telford defenders when they had the ball and began to create chances themselves. On 37 minutes Paul Staniforth's long throw in was flicked on by Ashley Beck to Wright but he put the ball over the cross bar from close range.

On 41 minutes Christian Fox fed Wright with a short corner. He burst through and fired in a hard shot which was well saved by Stuart Brock in the home goal. Adam Muller's fancy footwork created some space but his curling effort from the edge of the area went just wide on 43 minutes as Emley finished the half the better side.

In a heated second half Emley dominated proceedings. On 50 minutes Steve Kenworthy shot straight at Brock and on 51 Fox waltzed through the home defence but his shot was well tipped wide by Brock. The subsequent corner was fed straight to substitute Lee Calvert 20 yards out who put a curling shot just wide of the post.

Emley pulled a goal back on 57 minutes. Andy Wright's right wing corner found Mark Scarsella at the far post. The big australian placed his header into the bottom corner from six yards to register his first goal for the pewits.

On 72 minutes Telford captain Sean Parrish was sent off for a second bookable offence, after he had received a yellow card only a minute earlier. He appeared to feel that Fox had elbowed him in the face and continuously protested to the referee who appeared to give both yellow card's for foul and abusive language.

On 74 minutes Richard Beale was also booked for Telford after an appalling challenge on the edge of the area. Fox's free kick however went straight at Brock.

Emley had a great chance to equalise on 76 minutes. Scarsella, thrown up front as an extra striker, took the ball down and put in Adam Muller. The Emley striker lifted the ball over with only the keeper to beat when it appeared easier to score.

A scuffle ensued in the dug outs with nine minutes left to play involving most of the management teams and some players. After things had calmed down a bit, the referee gave a red card to an Emley man but fortunately for them it was not a player. Kit man James Small was sent to the changing rooms for violent conduct.

With five minutes left Emley finally got a reward for their constant pressure as Scarsella scored his second of the game with an excellent finish. He turned inside onto his right foot and drove the ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards beyond the reach of Brock.

In injury time Emley continued to press, searching for the winning goal. Muller's low cross was put just wide by Kenworthy. The ball was just out of the reach of Scarsella at the far post as it drifted wide. An Andy Wright corner was then met by Fox but his effort was hacked clear off the goal line as Telford attempted to hold out.

As the game ticked into the third minute of injury time Emley won another corner. Fox took it from the left wing and found Nicky Wood. The Emley defender headed the ball down to Adam Muller who lashed it first time into the roof of the net from six yards to give Emley an emphatic victory.

Leek Town v W Emley

Naivety proving costly

Oct 4 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W - Emley bid to banish their derby-day blues with a victory at UniBond League basement club Leek Town tonight (7.45).

Paul David's side lost 3-1 at home to Guiseley on Saturday, slipping to seventh in the Premier Division.

"We've been hit by injuries to several key players already this season," said David, whose side have won six and lost five League games so far. "The players who have stepped up have been a bit naive at times. "The only consistent thing about our game at the moment is that we are inconsistent. "Every time we have gone a goal down we seem to have lost. We've got to have greater self-belief and start to take our game to our opponents."

The Belle Vue club could be without midfielder Marc Thompson (groin) for six weeks while defender Richard Kettlewell is struggling to overcome knee ligament damage.

Experienced centre-back Lennie Curtis played only the first match before suffering an ankle problem. Whitby's 1-0 win against Radcliffe on Saturday left Leek, beaten 2-1 at Blyth Spartans, two points adrift of Runcorn at the bottom.

The Harrison Park side have gone 14 home League games without a win.

LEEK TOWN v W - EMLEY

October 4th 2005 by Dan Brownhill

W - Emley were held to a goalless draw by bottom club Leek Town after a very average performance.

In a poor first half, Emley were the first to threaten on 23 minutes. Good work by Richard Whitfield let in Steve Kenworthy whose shot was blocked. The rebound fell to Christian Fox but he fired harmlessly over the cross bar.

On 25 minutes David Stockdale was called into action. Ryan Brown's free kick was zipped in and flicked on towards goal but the ball was well held by the Emley keeper.

On 32 minutes Leek again came close. Dave Whittaker's long range effort from thirty yards just cleared the cross bar. On 39 minutes it was Alan Nagington's turn to put an effort in on the Emley goal. He just beat Stockdale to the ball but his effort went just over the bar from a difficult position.

Emley rarely threatened to score. The closest they came again before half time was a shot from Robert Tonks on 42 minutes that went well wide after good work from Andy Wright.

Right on half time Whittaker sent a curling free kick just wide from 25 yards as Leek looked the more likely side to score going in at the break.

The second half was much better than the first, although it was Leek again who looked the better side overall.

On 54 minutes Whittaker missed an easy chance for Leek, firing over from close range when in an excellent position.

Emley first threatened the Leek goal in the second half on the hour mark. Mark Scarsella's volley flew a few yards wide after Wright's corner had been eventually cleared.

On 61 minutes Nagington found himself clean through on goal for Leek but his effort was well saved by Stockdale coming out to meet him.

Emley then had a slightly better five minute spell. Adam Muller fired well over from 18 yards following a left wing throw in on 68 minutes. Then on 72 minutes Fox set up Muller but his low shot was well saved by Tim Mullock in the home goal from what was probably Emley's best chance of the game.

On 79 minutes Whittaker again missed an easy opportunity for Leek. The ball was fired low into the penalty area and his effort from close range was well saved by Stockdale.

On 90 minutes Brown fired in a cross for Leek but substitute Carl Frost couldn't direct his header and it went harmlessly wide.

Result: Leek Town 0 - 0 W Emley

Oct 1st W Emley v Guiseley

October 1st 2005 Dan Brownhill's report

W - Emley were defeated for the first time in a home league match since the opening day of the season by Yorkshire rivals Guiseley at Belle Vue.

Guiseley were the first to threaten in the opening minute. Jeremy Illingworth found himself with a clear shot at goal but screwed his shot wide from a good position.

Emley's first chance came on 7 minutes. Andy Wright's curling free kick went just over the bar after Adam Muller had been brought down. Guiseley broke straight up the field and David Henry headed just over with a looping header. 2 minutes later, Matty Smithard saw his drive fly just wide of the goal for Guiseley.

Emley then had a good a spell. On 11 minutes Adam Muller beat the keeper to the ball but it was just too high for Wright and bounced just wide of the post. On 16 minutes Christian Fox curled a free kick onto the cross bar with Matt Taylor beaten in the away goal.

Guiseley took the lead on 23 minutes. The ball was driven hard and low into the bottom corner by David Henry after a poor clearance from Robert Tonks.

Emley again came close from a free kick taken by Fox on 29 minutes. The ball curling straight into the keeper's arms from 25 yards.

Guiseley had the better chances to score in the final quarter of the first half. On 37 minutes Illingworth waltzed through the Emley defence but his hard shot was well saved by David Stockdale. Simon Parkes then shot straight at Stockdale when well placed before Smithard fired well over from 20 yards on 42 minutes.

Emley enjoyed the better chances in the opening stages of the second half. On 49 minutes Fox found himself well placed but his shot was easy for the keeper after Muller's knock down.

It was Fox who equalised for Emley on 51 minutes. His curling free kick left the unsighted Taylor rooted to the spot and sailed into the net from 20 yards out.

Emley should have gone in front on 57 minutes. Fox's cross in was flicked on by Richard Chattoe to Nicky Wood who headed just wide from 6 yards out.

On 58 minutes Wright fed Steve Kenworthy but his shot was tame and easy for the keeper from a good position.

Play then began to swing from one end of the field to the other as both sides enjoyed good chances in the closing half hour of the game.

On 62 minutes Kenworthy's curling effort was well saved by Taylor diving low to his right. 2 minutes later it was Stockdale's turn to make a superb save from a close range shot. The ball rebounded to Danny Day who put Emley back in danger with a bad back pass but Smithard blasted the ball over from close range.

Guiseley came close to adding to their lead on 65 minutes. Illingworth's header crashed back off the underside of the crossbar with Stockdale well beaten.

Emley should have taken the lead on 78 minutes. Paul Staniforth's cross in beat the defender leaving Muller unmarked, but he couldn't control the ball and it rebounded safely to the keeper from 6 yards.

On 80 minutes Guiseley regained their lead. David Henry waltzed through the home defence and blasted the ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards out for a well taken goal.

The closest Emley came to equalising for a second time was on 87 minutes. Wright's corner struck a Guiseley defender but Taylor saved well on his line.

Guiseley added to their lead on 90 minutes. Wood slipped in the Emley defence and let in substitute David Cooke who rounded Stockdale and finished with ease.

Result: W Emley 1 - 3 Guiseley

Sept 27th Ilkeston Town v W Emley

September 27th 2005 Dan Brownhill's report

W Emley were defeated by bottom of the league Ilkeston Town at the New Manor Ground despite having the better of the play and goalscoring chances over the 90 minutes.

As early as the 5th minute the pewits had a goal disallowed for offside. The ball squirmed its way through the home defence to Adam Muller who slotted the ball past the keeper but the linesman's flag was raised.

On 7 minutes Emley were awarded a free kick when Muller was upended just outside the area. Marc Thompson blasted the ball wide from 20 yards.

On 10 minutes Ilkeston had their first real chance as Chris Adam pulled his shot wide from a tight angle when clean through. 3 minutes later Ilkeston took the lead. Mick Goddard slotted the ball past David Stockdale, despite Emley appeals for offside, after the ball had been headed back into the danger area as the Emley defence were coming out.

Emley came close to equalising on 15 minutes. Andy Wright carried the ball into the area but his hard shot was well pushed wide by Ben Scott in the home goal. On 17 minutes it was Steve Kenworthy's turn to come close to scoring. His turn and shot from close range was well parried away by Scott after Paul Staniforth's long throw in had been flicked onto him.

On 30 minutes some good work by Muller saw him set up Kenworthy but his shot from 12 yards was well tipped over by Scott and the score remained at 1-0. The subsequent short corner ended with Wright sending the ball over from the right hand side. Mark Scarsella headed the ball back across, Kenworthy nodded down and Muller fired the ball against the face of the cross bar from a very tight angle as Emley continued to have the better of the play.

Emley were awarded a free kick on 32 minutes, 25 yards out. Andy Wright stepped up but his curling left foot effort went just over the cross bar. 3 minutes later Thompson sent a long range drive well wide. On 37 minutes Emley came close again. Paul Staniforth sending in a long range volley which was well saved by Scott diving low to his right.

6 minutes before half time Ilkeston had a rare chance as Goddard lifted the ball over the cross bar when one on one with David Stockdale in the Emley goal. A minute later Kenworthy turned inside and drove the ball wide for Emley from 18 yards as Emley went in at the break looking much the better team.

Straight after half time disaster struck for Emley, however, as Goddard stole in and beat Stockdale from a tight angle to double Ilkeston's lead.

Emley tried to come back at Ilkeston but couldn't find the finishing touch they needed. Scarsella slid in following a low cross on 54 minutes but the ball went just over the bar. On 64 minutes Richard Chattoe sent a low drive just wide after good work in the penalty area involving Muller, Kenworthy and Wright.

Ilkeston came close to adding a third on 68 minutes. Adam's long range drive coming back off the post.

Emley had further chances before the end. Wright shot tamely at the keeper when well placed on 72 minutes, Thompson drove wide from 20 yards on 73 minutes and Staniforth's effort from 25 yards out went wide on 81 minutes.

Emley continued to press forward but to no avail. Andy Wright's shot on 83 minutes, which was deflected just wide for a corner, was the closest they came to reducing the arrears.

W - EMLEY v RUNCORN FC HALTON

September 24th 2005 Dan Brownhill's report

W-Emley moved to fourth in the UniBond League table with a 2-0 victory over a poor Runcorn side at The Atlantic Solutions Stadium after a poor game of football.

Emley were the first to come close on 7 minutes. Adam Muller's delicate lob beat the goalkeeper but not the defender on the line after he had burst into the penalty area.

On 24 minutes Muller put Emley in front. Andy Wright's left wing cross was too high for the defender and Muller had time to take the ball down and slot it past Robbie Holcroft in the Runcorn goal from 6 yards.

Robert Tonks came close to adding to Emley's lead on 36 minutes but Holcroft just managed to grab the ball from his feet as Tonks attempted to take it round him.

Runcorn's first real attempt came on 37 minutes. Tommy Taylor turned and shot from 12 yards out but it was a comfortable save for David Stockdale low down to his left.

James Nestor sent a flick header straight at Holcroft after Wright's cross in just before the break as Emley finished the half the better side.

The second half was just as uneventful as the first with both side been limited to mainly long range efforts.

Christian Fox's 50th minute corner found Marc Thompson at the far post but his looping header was headed off the line by a defender and the score remained 1-0.

Muller and Fox both came close for Emley again with long range efforts that just missed the target.

Runcorn rarely threatened to equalise with Colin Flood's 25 yard free kick that went just over the bar and Paul Scott's tame effort going straight at Stockdale the closest they came.

Emley added to their lead right at the end of the game. Fox made space down the left and cut the ball back to Muller who drove the ball past Holcroft into the bottom corner from 12 yards out.

Emley take revenge on Runcorn!
Sep 26 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

ADAM MULLER was on target with goals in each half as Paul David's side avenged a 2-1 defeat by Runcorn just a week earlier.

Emley continued positively after their 1-0 midweek win against Gateshead with a solid defensive performance in front of a crowd of just 104 and limited Runcorn to rare chances.

Muller almost opened his account on seven minutes when he evaded the challenge of Paul Scott but his shot, the result of a fine solo run, was cleared off the line.

A swerving Scott Forster shot was confidently caught by Emley loan goalkeeper David Stockdale, from York City, soon after, before Muller's opener on 23 minutes.

After great build up work down the left, Andy Wright produced a teasing cross and Muller had time to trap the ball before rifling home from close range.

Rob Tonks and James Nestor went close to increasing the lead while Runcorn's chances were limited with Tommy Taylor's turn and shot straight at the keeper being their best chance of the half.

Emley, who have adapted well defensively after injuries to keeper Danny Trueman and defenders Nicky Wood and Lennie Curtis, were eager to increase their lead.

Muller and Nestor both went close with curling drives while Colin Flood's free kick on 72 minutes for Runcorn just dipped over the bar.

Muller sealed it with Emley's second on 89 minutes with a precise angled drive while Scott was denied a consolation for the visitors deep into stoppage time.

Sept 20th W Emley v Gateshead

Phil Rann's report

Another good performance with excellent football. It should have been at least 3-0 before Paul Staniforth's cross went all the way into the corner on 62 minutes, James Nestor the guilty party, missing a host of chances.
As always with W-Emley though, we go 1-0 up, and sit back, allowing a poor Gateshead side to try and play some football, but new keeper David Stockdale was rarely threatened.

Nestor missed about three really good chances, and seemed unable to control the ball, maybe he just had a bad night. We played some great football again though, slick little moves, and the main thing, keeping the ball and stringing lots of passes together. Thompson ran the show in the first-half with his Gerrard like performance, perfect 40 yard passes all the way through. As always, the goal was probably the weakest chance we had all night, but more wonderful football down the left hand side involving Wright, Muller and Kenworthy set up Thompson, whose drive was brilliantly saved by the keeper.
One question though, why do we always sit back when we are winning. A better side than Gateshead would have punished us, luckily their no.9 took their free-kicks and troubled more 737 planes than it did Stockdale.
Anyway, we comfortably hung on, and moved up to 9th in the league.

W-Emley: Stockdale, Fox, Tonks, Chattoe (Kettlewell 79), Scarsella, Staniforth, Muller, Thompson, Nestor (Whitfield 69), Kenworthy, Wright. Sub Not Used: Day.

Attendance: 115 (2 Gateshead supporters). Still poor though.

September 20th 2005 Dan Brownhill's report

W - Emley recorded a 1-0 victory over an average Gateshead side at the Atlantic Solutions Stadium thanks to a second half goal from Paul Staniforth.

The pewits went into the game with two changes from the side that lost 2-1 at Runcorn last saturday. Andy Wright replaced Richard Kettlewell in the starting line-up and goalkeeper Joel Graves was dropped after his poor showing on saturday. His replacement was David Stockdale who has joined the club on a month's loan from York City to try and regain fitness after a broken leg.

Emley were the better side in the opening period. James Nestor fed Steve Kenworthy on 6 minutes but his low shot was easy for Peter Keen in the away goal. Nestor himself sent a looping header just wide three minutes later following Christian Fox's free kick.

Fox himself had a low shot deflected just wide on 10 minutes after good build up play involving Fox, Adam Muller and Nestor down the right hand side and Andy Wright sent a low shot into the side netting on 14 minutes as Emley continued to be the better side.

Emley had further chances before half time with Fox's low drive from the edge of the area going just wide after he had done well to create space and Marc Thompson drilling the ball wide from 25 yards on 27 minutes.

Wright's low cross on the half hour mark was just too far in front of the stretching Nestor at the far post.

Gateshead managed to create a couple of chances before half time with Chris Feasey firing over from 20 yards and a long range drive bringing a good tip over from Stockdale although the referee misjudged the outcome and signalled a goal kick.

The second half started slowly. Adam Muller was the first to come close for Emley on 58 minutes but got the ball tied up under his feet when clean through on goal as he tried to round the keeper and Gateshead cleared the danger.

Paul Staniforth opened the scoring on 68 minutes. His low inswinging cross from the right hand side beat everyone including the Gateshead goalkeeper and nestled into the bottom corner.

Three minutes later Thompson came close to adding to the score but his 20 yard drive was well tipped wide by Keen.

Gateshead could not find a response to the Emley goal and did little to trouble Stockdale. A long range drive by Steve Richardson went just wide and a low shot by substitute Lee George was well saved by Stockdale with 10 minutes left.

Emley came close to adding to their lead in injury time after a short back pass let in Steve Kenworthy. His attempt was saved by the keeper and the follow up by substitute Richard Whitfield went over the bar from a difficult position.

Result: W Emley 1 - 0 Gateshead

W Emley v Gateshead

Staniforth spares Emley's blushes

Sep 21 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

PAUL STANIFORTH spared W-Emley's blushes on 67 minutes when he produced the only goal of the UniBond League Premier Division game in which Paul David's hosts dominated.

Opponents Gateshead were poor and were there for the taking but despite some exquisite passing and a high percentage of first half possession, Emley failed to break down the North East visitors, who had beaten them 3-2 at the International Stadium just a fortnight previously.

Striker James Nestor lacked a cutting edge in front of goal, despite being well-supported by livewires Adam Muller and Stephen Kenworthy.

Emley goalkeeper David Stockdale, on trial from York City, did not have a save to make all game.

Just a minute after Nestor had been replaced by Richard Whitfield, Staniforth pounced to guide a right wing cross inside the far post.

Curiously, instead of building on that lead, Emley decided to protect it, leaving Whitfield up front as a lone striker.

The decision prompted a late flurry of activity from Gateshead but they failed to break through.

Result: W Emley 1 - 0 Gateshead

Sept 17th Runcorn FC Halton v W Emley

September 17th 2005 Dan Brownhill's report

W - Emley recorded their third straight defeat after two mistakes by stand-in goalkeeper Joel Graves cost them the match.

It was Emley who started the better, with James Nestor and Steve Kenworthy both missing a couple of good chances each after been put clean through in the first eleven minutes.

Emley were made to pay for the misses when Colin Flood put Runcorn ahead direct from a free kick. His tame low ball in appeared easy for Graves in the Emley goal, but the keeper's effort at saving the ball only resulted in him pushing it into the bottom corner of his own net on 12 minutes.

Emley were soon back on level terms, however, when Kenworthy put in Nestor and the tall striker kept his head well to loft the ball over the oncoming Robert Holcroft in the home goal and into the net.

Emley had further good chances before half time. Mark Scarsella's close range volley went just wide following a long through in and Marc Thompson's 25 yard free kick was well saved by Holcroft at the second attempt.

Runcorn also recorded a couple of chances with Paul Scott's long range effort and Shaun Whalley's snapshot both being well saved by Graves.

Emley looked the more likely team to win the game going in at half time, but had a quiet start to the second half.

Adam Muller should have put Emley in front but lifted the ball over the keeper but wide of the goal after he had been put clean through on goal on 56 minutes. His better option would have been to pass the ball to Danny Day who was making a run on his right and would have been left with a tap in to the open goal.

Runcorn regained the lead on 66 minutes - Flood again scoring direct from a free kick. His 30 yard cross was misjudged badly by Graves and floated well over the Emley keeper and into the net.

Emley then came to life and had the better of the play in the closing quarter of the game with numerous dangerous balls into the Runcorn penalty area but could not manage to score a second goal.

The closest they came to scoring was on 76 minutes after a scramble in the Runcorn penalty area involving Richard Kettlewell and Muller which ended with Runcorn defence manging to force the ball out for a corner.

Sep 10th W Emley v Blyth Spartans FA Cup

Phil Rann’s Report

Oh dear. A draw may have been a fairer result. Kenworthy for W-Emley on 50 minutes from Thompson's header. Muller missed a sitter soon after to put the game to bed when he turned the keeper and the defender somehow got a lucky deflection to put it out for a corner. Blyth equalised from a header, and scored the winner after 88 minutes after a good run by the Blyth player but the keeper should have closed him down better.

Result: W Emley 1 - 2 Blyth Spartans

W-Emley: Graves, Fox, Staniforth, Chattoe (Wright 82), Wood, Scarsella, Thompson, Tonks, Nestor (Day 36), Kenworthy, Muller.
Subs not used: Kettlewell, Curtis, Chapman.

Attendance: 162.

Graves made a couple of good saves in the first half, but looks to lack confidence at vital times, can't blame him for either of the goals really but perhaps he should have closed him down better for the second. The new Australian defender Scarsella was very poor, has he played before?
The rest of the team should be good enough to win the game, and has done four times this season, but maybe it wasn't our day. The midfield was non-existant whereas it has been very good so far this season. The ball kept going up in the air to the forwards which was a bad idea as the no.5 was very good in the air as he was 6''6 but was shocking on the floor, so we should have taken advantage of that. Kenworthy missed a good chance in the first half, and Fox missed a sitter. If Muller had scored when it was 1-0, that would have been that and we would have been in the draw, but he didn't, and the money won't be coming from the FA Cup this season, lets keep it going in the league and have a run in the FA Trophy.

W EMLEY v BLYTH SPARTANS
September 10th 2005 Dan Brownhill's report

W Emley were dumped out of the FA Cup at the first qualifying round stage as Blyth Spartans came from behind at the Atlantic Solutions Stadium to snatch victory.

After a nervous opening 20 minutes, Blyth were the first to cause a real threat from a free kick after Nicky Wood had brought down Robert Dale at the edge of the area. Gareth Williams low drive was well pushed away by Joel Graves, who is deputising in the home goal for the injured Danny Trueman.

Dale again came close to putting Blyth ahead on 23 minutes but placed his free header from close range wide after a near post flick on.

Emley then came more into the game and had a good spell in the last 20 minutes of the half, with Robert Tonks causing Blyth problems in particular. His cross on 25 minutes led to a goalmouth scramble in the Blyth area with James Nestor and Marc Thompson both involved for Emley, but the referee bailed Blyth out by awarding a free kick.

Tonks again sent over a low cross on 27 minutes but the defender just beat Adam Muller to the ball. Blyth then immediately counter-attacked with a close range header coming back off the inside of the post and been hacked clear by the Emley defence.

Steve Kenworthy then found himself well placed for Emley on the half hour mark following good work by Adam Muller and Tonks but his first time shot was well saved by Adam Bartlett who pushed the ball wide for a corner.

Kenworthy again came close on 35 minutes but his close range header went just over the bar after Christian Fox's cross. Fox himself fired wide for Emley from 12 yards when well placed after more good work by Tonks down the wing five minutes before half time.

The half ended with Emley on top and Tonks' low drive been well held by Bartlett diving low down to his right following Fox's mazy run.

The second half began with Emley again creating chances. An 18 yard drive by Richard Chattoe was well held by the keeper on 49 minutes before Kenworthy put Emley ahead on 50 minutes. Christian Fox sent over a right wing corner which was flicked on by Thompson and Kenworthy reacted well to flick the ball into the net from close range.

Four minutes later Emley could have added to their lead but Kenworthy shot straight at the keeper after been put clean through by Muller. Blyth responded with a long range drive by Liam Gildea which was well tipped over by Graves on 59 minutes.

Emley continued to look threatening with Fox firing a long range drive straight at Bartlett and a short back pass finding substitute Danny Day who laid off to Muller, only for the Emley striker to see his effort hit the covering defender and go behind for a corner with the goalkeeper stranded.

Disaster struck for Emley on 66 minutes when Andrew Leeson sent a looping header over Graves to equalise for the visitors. This brought the Blyth side to life as they began to dominate the game and have the majority of the possesion in the closing 20 minutes, without creating many clear cut chances.

It was Muller however who came close to putting Emley back in front as he cut inside and sent a curling shot over the bar on 71 minutes and saw his effort disallowed for offside after he had been put through by Nicky Wood 4 minutes from time.

Blyth however snatched victory on 87 minutes. Substitute Liam Gildea was put through one on one with Graves and slid the ball under the oncoming Emley keeper to seal the victory.

W Emley boss gutted Sep 12 2005
By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W-EMLEY boss Paul David admitted he was "gutted" after his side bowed out of the FA Cup at their first hurdle.

Blyth Spartans substitute Liam Gildea pounced four minutes from the end of Saturday's first qualifying round tie to clinch victory for the North-Easterners.

Andrew Leeson had earlier cancelled out Stephen Kenworthy's 50th minute opener for the home side in this battle of the UniBond League Premier Division rivals.

Emley, playing in front of a crowd of 162, were left to rue to missed second-half chances by Kenworthy and Adam Muller.

"In the first half I didn't think we did ourselves justice," said David. "We got embroiled in an aerial battle and I don't know a taller side than Blyth! "But with 20 minutes to go we should have been three up, but their equaliser (after 66 minutes) knocked the wind out of our sails. "To lose this game is a bitter pill to swallow, especially after having so many clear-cut chances."

Kenworthy put Emley ahead cheekily after Christian Fox's cross was steered goalwards by Marc Thompson.

The former Town Junior, facing away from goal, back-heeled the ball past goalkeeper Adam Bartlett.

On 54 minutes, Muller's header played Kenworthy through and he was one-on-one with Bartlett, but the 'keeper smothered.

Blyth, who had dominated the first half, were sparked back into life when Gildea brought a fine one-handed save from Joel Graves, deputising for the injured Danny Trueman, with a dipping 59th-minute shot.

Even so, Muller should have added a second for Wakefield-Emley after 64 minutes, but he hesitated on meeting a Danny Day cross and his eventual shot was blocked by Anthony Lowther.

Blyth levelled when Robert Dale's deep cross was steered home by Leeson.

Muller made a fine solo run but failed to produce a goal, then Gildea's strike sent Harry Dunn's team through.

Tomorrow's scheduled home League clash with Bradford Park Avenue is off because the visitors must replay their Cup clash with Padiham after Saturday's 1-1 draw.

Result: W Emley 1 - 2 Blyth Spartans

W-Emley: Graves, Fox, Staniforth, Chattoe (Wright, 84mins), Wood, Scarsellwa, Thompson, Tonks, Nestor (Day, 40mins), Kenworthy, Muller. Subs not used: Curtis, Kettlewell, Chapman.

  Gateshead v W Emley

Poor start so costly for David
Sep 8 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W Emley's winning UniBond League run ended with a 3-2 loss at Gateshead last night.

But having got off to a shocking start, Paul David's side made a decent fist of getting back into the game.

The home team were three up inside 34 minutes at the International Athletics Stadium, where 121 watched.

Richard Flynn (eight minutes), Steven Richardson (14) and Chris Feasey (34) were the men on target.

Former Town Juniors striker Steve Kenworthy gave Wakefield-Emley a lifeline with a 35th-minute goal.

The Nicky Wood slotted a 55th-minute penalty to turn up the heat.

However Gatheshead held out for their first win of the campaign, sending David's side, who had previously won four on the trot, down to fifth in the Premier Division.

The table is now led by Blyth Spartans, who visit Wakefield-Emley in the FA Cup first qualifying round on Saturday (3.00).

Result: Gateshead 3 - 2 W Emley

Statto’s comments

Graves played in goal but didn't really have a chance on the initial 2 goals

First from a good long corner which lofted over the defence and a good strong header hit the net

The 2nd was a blinder from 30 yards - can't say the Robinson would have saved that

Third was comical. Gateshead broke quickly down the right wing and another player was screaming for the ball in the middle, unmarked

As the ball came across Graves came for it to cut off the danger but because it was outside the penalty box he couldn't go with his hands so tried to head it. Unfortunatley it was hanging to high dropped behind it and it was hit straight into the net (not too dissimilar to Cussy at Hyde last season)

The Gateshead keeper must have been sympathetic because in the next minute a complete mix up in the defence let Kenworthy in to score.

Gateshead missed a sitter from afree header a yard out and Emley nearly scrambled another which hit the post and was almost a tap in

Penalty with nearly 1/2 hour to go - foul just in the corner of the box
Woody to be congratulated in insisting that he would take it - after the disasters of last season and at Witton. Very confidently taken

Muller hit the bar with 15 to go. Gateshead initially dangerous on the break then played for time.

Nestor had a good run to the by line 3 yards from goal and a good lay off but after big scramble ball was cleared

Graves went walk about chasing a cross nearly to the corner flag and the defence did stirling work to clear for a corner.

Can't complain about the commitment from the players we fought back and could have clinched a point

Interesting to see Ian Farmery has arrived from Worksop and started with Muller on the bench until 1/2 time.

Dan Brownhill’s report

GATESHEAD v  W EMLEY

September 7th 2005

Wakefield-Emley lost for the first time in five matches after a poor performance in the first half hour at the International Stadium.

Emley went into the game goalkeeper Danny Trueman, centre back Lennie Curtis and striker Adam Muller all out with injuries. New signing australian defender Mark Scarsella has still to receive international clearance to play so was also unavailable.

Gateshead took the lead in the ninth minute when David Colvin's corner was head in at the far post by Richard Flynn in what was the first real action of the game.

Emley attacked straight from the kick off but Marc Thompson's long range effort was well saved by Peter Keen in the home goal.

The home side extended their lead on 15 minutes when a speculative shot from 30 yards out by Steven Richardson left Emley keeper Joel Graves rooted to the spot and flew into the top corner.

Kevin Henderson and Lee George both then glanced headers just wide for Gateshead whilst Steve Kenworthy sent two efforts just off target and James Nestor headed against the post for Emley as both teams created chances to finish the opening half hour.

It was Gateshead, however, who added to their lead on 35 minutes when Graves came charging out of his goal and missed the ball, leaving Chris Feasey to tap into the open goal.

Emley equalised straight from the kick-off in similar circumstances as Keen missed the ball in the home goal and Kenworthy stole in to toe-poke the ball home.

A minute later Gateshead nearly made it four but George's 20 yard volley cannoned back off the upright.

The second half started with Adam Muller coming on for Emley to replace Richard Kettlewell, despite carrying an injury and Emley began to dominate proceedings.

Kenworthy's half volley on 50 minutes flew just wide before Muller was brought down in the box by James Curtis. Nicky Wood duly converted the penalty to reduce the deficit to just a single goal.

Nestor found himself in space on 58 minutes for Emley but his effort was forced wide before Muller crashed a 15 yard effort against the cross bar following good work by Nestor and Kenworthy down the right flank.

On 68 minutes Richard Chattoe fired just wide for Emley from 20 yards after Ian Farmery, who has returned to the club after a long spell out injured, laid the ball off.

Muller again tested the Gateshead keeper on 77 minutes but Keen was up to the task and saved well low down to his right.

Emley couldn't find a breakthrough however and it wasn't to be their night as Thompson's header was comfortable for the keeper and Christian Fox's shot from a tight angle flew over the bar after a last minute melee in the Gateshead penalty area.

Result: Gateshead 3 - 2 W Emley

Gateshead : Keen, Parker, Bell, Flynn, Curtis (c), McAlindon, Feasey (Buzzeo 87), George (Thompson 69), Henderson (R Huntley 56), Richardson, Colvin.

Sep 2nd W Emley v Ilkeston Town

Muller's goal puts David's boys in third
Sep 5 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W - Emley are among a quartet of Yorkshire clubs setting the early pace at the top of the UniBond League.

Friday's 1-0 home win over Ilkeston Town, a fourth on the trot for Paul David's side, put them third in the Premier Division.

Former Sheffield Wednesday junior player Adam Muller, last season's 21-goal top scorer, got his second of this campaign in the 14th minute against Ilkeston.

The match was watched by 159, the highest crowd in three home games so far.

Result: W Emley1 - 0 Ilkeston Town

Guiseley, who have yet to be beaten, lead the way with 13 points from five games, one more than both second-placed North Ferriby and David's Belle Vue team.

Frickley, who haven't yet tasted defeat but have drawn twice, are fourth, a point behind Ferriby and Wakefield-Emley.

Guiseley won 2-0 at Prescot Cables on Friday, when Frickley won 1-0 at Ashton United, who are bossed by Holme Valley-based Paul Futcher.

Ferriby were 2-1 winners at Radcliffe Borough on Saturday.

Next up for W - Emley is a trip to sixth-bottom Gateshead on Wednesday (7.45), while on Saturday, they get their FA Cup bid under way with a first qualifying round tie at home to Blyth Spartans.

Phil Rann’s Report

What can I say? That is the worst disciplinary performance I have ever seen by a team. Ilkeston's players, management and especially fans were a complete and utter disgrace, and if they carry on behaving like they have tonight, they thoroughly deserve to go down.
W-Emley started the night playing good, quick football, and were the better side despite the drunken chants on the away fans. Adam Muller put the home side ahead in only the 12th minute when he slotted the ball past Ilkeston keeper Ben Scott.
It was here when the chaos started. A nothing ball down field by Ilkeston resulted in W-Emley keeper Danny Trueman flying out of his box to clear the ball. As he did, Mick Goddard left a leg in to a flying Trueman, who went straight to ground. Just when he looked like he wasn't going to get up, he did, if only to prove the Ilkeston fans, who were adamant that it wasn't a foul, wrong. No red card, not even a yellow, as referee M.Brown 'bottled it' in front of the away fans.
More poor challenges continued as the half wore on, and Trueman again went to ground with more pain in his right knee. Nicky Wood was booked for dissent for W-Emley, but things hadn't finished yet.
Andy Wright limped off after another poor challenge soon after.
Another nothing ball that was been watched out for a goal kick by Robert Tonks resulted in a shambollic kick on his right ankle by the Ilkeston player, no attempt to play the ball, maybe he was tired of losing, he'll be exhausted come Christmas time then. Straight red this time as the referee had no choice, but bedlam ensued. A twenty-man brawl commenced with Ilkeston manager Phil Stant, with every other official in the ground on the field, stayed in his dugout as if nothing had happened.
Yet another poor tackle by an Ilkeston player followed soon after this, this time it resulted in a fair yellow card.
By this time, however, the referee had completely lost control of the game, and he may as well have given Stant the whistle in the second period as every time he put his hand up to protest to the referee, he gladly obliged with a free-kick.
W-Emley continued to play excellent ground-football when they weren't been kicked everywhere, and an wonderful move led to Richard Kettlewell being put through on goal. Unfortunately, another excellent performance couldn't bring a second goal.
Ilkeston had more possession as the game neared its climax of 101 minutes, but that was more through W-Emley's mistakes and poor refereeing than good football by the away side. Finally, a free-kick was given for a push on Trueman in the box after several attempts to put him out of the match, with no sub keeper on the bench.
W-Emley held on for three deserved points, while Ilkeston went home with more than what they deserved, nothing.

W-Emley fought like lions tonight, were not dragged into a bloody riot, and played some nice football when they could. Shame it wasn't 4-0.

W-Emley: Trueman, Fox, Tonks, Chattoe, Wood, Staniforth, Thompson, Kettlewell, Muller, Kenworthy, Wright (Chapman 25 (Day 72)). Sub Not Used: Watson.

Dan Brownhill’s Report

W - EMLEY v ILKESTON TOWN

September 2nd 2005

W - Emley extended their winning run to four matches in a scrappy match at the Atlantic Solutions Stadium.

Both sides had half chances in the opening ten minutes with Adam Muller and Richard Chattoe both failing to test Ben Scott in the Ilkeston goal with long range efforts for Emley and Justin Jenkins twice failing to find the mark for Ilkeston when well placed.

Emley took the lead on 12 minutes when Muller was put through by Marc Thompson and held off the defender superbly to slot the ball past the oncoming Scott from 12 yards.

Mark Clifford's long range effort on 18 minutes brought a good save from Danny Trueman in the home goal, diving low to his right to keep his side in front.

A minute later the Emley keeper spent five minutes on the ground after been taken out by Mick Goddard as he was charging from his area to clear the ball. No action was taken by the referee against Goddard, resulting in Nicky Wood complaining furiously to the referee, resulting in the Emley centre-half receiving the first yellow card of the game.

On 26 minutes Emley came close to adding a second goal, as Christian Fox's long range free kick flew just over the bar.

Four minutes later Trueman required more treatment after dealing with a dangerous ball in. Luckily for Emley, the follow up from his punch was drilled well wide.

Emley keeper Trueman came to the rescue again five minutes before half time, when he reacted superbly to push away a point blank header from Colin Hoyle.

Ilkeston were reduced to ten men in first half injury time, when Mark Clifford kicked out at Robert Tonks after the Emley man had attempted to guide the ball out of play near the goal line. The referee immediately showed the red card to the Ilkeston man and play was halted for a few minutes following heated exchanges between both sets of players.

When play resumed, tempers were still flaring and Darren Knowles was shown a yellow card for Ilkeston after a bad challenge on Steve Kenworthy.

The second half was a scrappy, battling affair with very few chances.

On 49 minutes Emley's Richard Kettlewell burst through the middle only to fire well over the bar from 12 yards out.

Colin Hoyle then came close to scoring an own goal on 57 minutes, but his sliding tackle was well saved by Scott, diving low to his right.

A minute later, the ball fell kindly for Mick Goddard, but he missed his chance to equalise for Ilkeston, curling his shot wide of the far post.

On 62 minutes, Emley came close to adding a second goal once more, but Chapman's 12 yard effort was just over the bar following Kenworthy's lay-off.

10-man Ilkeston were limited to half chances with Scott Bonsall's drive on 63 minutes, and Nigel Jemson's shot on 78 minutes both failing to trouble Trueman.

The nearest Ilkeston came to gaining an equaliser in fact was twenty minutes from time when a low cross deflected off Emley centre-back Wood but only found the side-netting.

Emley will be hoping to build on this victory with another win at Gateshead on Wednesday night and will be perhaps hoping for a slightly less physical match where they will be able to try and play a bit more football on the ground.

Result: W Emley 1 - 0  Ilkeston Town

David keen to continue recovery
Sep 2 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

BOSS Paul David says honesty and versatility have been the main factors in W- Emley's impressive recovery from their season-opening setback against Marine.

The Huddersfield-based manager branded his side's showing in the 2-0 UniBond League defeat a fortnight ago as "inept and passionless".

But such has been the swift improvement that David's side go into tonight's Premier Division clash with Ilkeston Town at Belle Vue (7.45) chasing a fourth straight win.

The 39-year-old, who first joined the former village club as a player in 1992, and became boss in 2003, is delighted by the away victories over Matlock (2-0) and Witton (2-1) and Monday's home 1-0 home success over North Ferriby.

But as he continued preparations for the meeting with an Ilkeston side bossed by former Town player Phil Stant, he warned: "If we start to think we're world beaters, we'll come down to earth with a bump."

David, whose chairman is Kirkburton-based Peter Matthews, added: "That performance against Marine was awful, and I must take as much blame for it as anyone else.

"As manager, my responsibility is to pick and prepare the side. I got it wrong, and I hold my hands up.

"We had a good talk afterwards and changed a few things.

"The response has been very good, and the even better thing is, there is further improvement to come from these players.

"It's not about individuals, it's a team effort, and we've all pulled together so far.

"I try to be honest with them, and all I ask is that they are honest with me in return, and they have been."

A tight budget means David has to work with a small squad - it will rise to 20-strong if a bid for Thackley centre-back James Riley proves successful - so the versatility he talks about has been crucial.

"I've got lads like Rob Tonks, who will slot in and do a decent job almost anythere, Adam Muller, who is really a striker but has recently played midfield, and Danny Day, who made his name as a frontman but has returned as a favour and played at centre-back," he said.

"That versatility becomes even more vital when injuries and suspensions start to kick in, which is sure to happen.

"We can't forget these are still early days, and there's no doubt we will suffer setbacks.

"It's how we respond to them that will be really interesting."

W Emley v North Ferriby United

Emley third time lucky
Aug 30 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W - Emley chalked up a third successive UniBond League Premier Division victory when North Ferriby United were beaten 1-0 at the Atlantic Solutions Stadium yesterday.

Danny Day, who had been drafted back into boss Paul David's squad as a short-term measure to cover for injuries, netted the crucial goal on 76 minutes.

W Emley v North Ferriby United

Phil Rann’s Report

Another win against a good side, good to see a win at home which takes us to 3rd in the
league!!!

W-Emley started well on a sunny and warm afternoon at Belle Vue, and Nicky Wood
almost put the Pewits ahead in only the second minute from a corner, but North Ferriby
keeper Paul Sharp was equal to it, and tipped it over for another corner.

Adam Muller was set free down the right soon after, but wasted the 'three-on-one' situation in the penalty area.

North Ferriby started to come in the game after about 25 minutes, and Gary Bradshaw's
through ball to Leon Wainman was well saved by Danny Trueman. The linesman had his
flag up for offside but Trueman wasn't to know this.

W-Emley survived a large handball shout just before half-time when it looked as though Wood had handled, but a push in the back by the North Ferriby player allowed play to go on.

In the second half, Darren Day moved up front alongside Muller, and Kettlewell slotted
into the centre-half position, but there is another injury worry for W-Emley when Paul
Staniforth limped off early on.

The away side were unlucky to not go ahead when Bradshaw hit the outside of the post with a shot that beat Trueman.
Substitute Eamonn Chapman's cross almost fed Day, but he headed well over from a free header when he should have done better.
The goal came on the 76th minute, when Day made no mistake with a header this time after a good cross from Christian Fox.
When it looked like North Ferriby would give W-Emley late worries at the back, Muller shot wide and Kenworthy's shot was blocked as they tried to make it 2-0.
Trueman wasn't tested in the last ten minutes, and W-Emley hung on for a third straight win, and a first home win of the season.

Result: W Emley 1 - 0 North Ferriby United

W-Emley: Trueman, Fox, Tonks, Chattoe, Wood, Staniforth (Chapman 17), Kettlewell, Watson (Whitfield 64), Muller, Kenworthy, Day.
Sub Not Used: Wright.

Attendance - 144 (about right I would have said over 150 but more encouraging than last week's attendance V Marine when half of that crowd were away fans). North Ferriby had around 25-30 fans today I would say.

Good to see a club shop, took the opportunity to purchase a cap, the programme was excellent, and so was the performance.
Up Da EmLeY!

Summer recruits strike for victory

Aug 29 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

CLOSE-season signings Andy Wright and James Nestor were on target as W - Emley won 2-1 at Witton Albion.

It was a second away victory in five days for Paul David's UniBond League Premier
Division side, who were hosting North Ferriby United today (3.00).

Much travelled winger Wright, back after a spell at Sutton, put the visitors ahead three minutes before the break against a side who hadn't previously conceded a goal this term.

A couple of minutes earlier we got a penalty when Muller was knocked to the ground in the penalty area. Nestor took it but the keeper dived to his left and knocked it back out. Muller followed up and tried to put it inside the far post but put it the wrong side of the post

James Nestor, brought in from neighbours Ossett Town, increased the lead after 63
minutes. Nestor, with a burst of speed went past the centreback and shot. The keeper got a good hand to it and the ball looked as if it was going out for a corner but the spin on it was in our favour and the ball hit the inside of the post and went into the net

Witton's reply, from Ian Latham, didn't arrive until stoppage time at Wincham Park, where 258 watched.
This was a good shot from outside the penalty box but Trueman had it covered but it flew in through his hands

Result: Witton Albion 1 - 2 W Emley

Hull side Ferriby were 3-1 home winners over Runcorn FC Halton.

* Former Town (and Emley)  striker Chris Senior scored his first goal for Halifax in their 2-2 Conference draw at Forest Green Rovers.

Matlock Town v W Emley

Day's help in Emley boost
Aug 24 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

A FAMILIAR face returned to help out an old mate as W - Emley notched their
first UniBond League Premier Division victory of the season with a 1-0 win (Adam Muller
61mins) at Matlock last night.

Striker Danny Day formerly formed a formidable strike partnership with Simeon
Bambrook and their goals almost led to Emley's promotion to the Conference in 2001.
But a knee injury forced Day to retire from UniBond League football two years ago,
playing every now and again in a minor league - until defying doctor's orders and slotting
in at centre-back last night.

Boss Paul David said: "We had a centre-back crisis after Lennie Curtis limped off on
Saturday and Danny came to the rescue."

Boss brands Wakefield-Emley inept
Aug 22 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

BOSS Paul David blasted W-Emley's UniBond League opening-day display as "inept and passionless".

David, forced to watch from the stands rather than the touchline because of a ban carried over from last season, added: "At times it was embarrassing."
Just 107 fans turned out to see Marine win with goals by Lee Parle and Paul Byrne.
"A lot of hard work went into pre-season, which made Saturday's performance even more disappointing," said David.
"We created good potential situations, but lacked fight and determination."At least
it was only one game and we have a quick chance to redeem ourselves at Matlock
tomorrow."

While David turned his attentions to the trip into Derbyshire (7.45), Marine manager Alvin McDonald was able to reflect on a full points haul in his first match since replacing the long-serving Roly Howard.

Parle put the Liverpool side ahead from close range after only seven minutes after
goalkeeper Danny Trueman spilled a free-kick.

Lee Kissock nearly capitalised on a poor back header from Lennie Curtis on 16, but
Trueman stood firm under a strong challenge. Injury-hit Curtis was substituted a minute later.

Byrne and James Connolly both missed chances for the visitors, while Emley struggled
to create chances, the introduction of striker Stephen Kenworthy, on 51 minutes, to
team up with former Ossett Town striker James Nestor failing to ignite any real threat.

Marine duo Nicky Young and the lively Danny Brookfield were denied by last-ditch tackles. But two minutes from the end Byrne, with time and space, added a second with
a long-range drive.

Result: W Emley 0 - 2 Marine

W Emley: Trueman, Tonks, Wood, Curtis (Chapman, 17mins), Staniforth, Fox,
Kettlewell, Muller, Watson (Kenworthy, 51mins), Wright, Nestor (Whitfield, 79mins).

FORUM COMMENT:

We were not really worth a point although they won they were not much
better and hoofed the ball out as often as possible. At one point there were 3
footballs outside the ground. They also wasted as much time as they could, not
retreating, throwing the ball away etc etc. The ref let them get away with all
that. This tactic was not just near the end but for practically all the match once
the had scored. It was as interesting as the paint drying on my fence during the
week.

Entertainment value, 2 out of 10. Thats one for each team for turning up!!

Sorry, but unless things change it will be a long hard season.

However, mostly the potential is there. The spirit and moral are missing.
Something in the previous years when we were successful was the mainstay
and helped us through on days of bad performances.

  Defence crucial to David bid
Aug 19 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

RICHARD KETTLEWELL is on stand-by to slot in at centre-back for W- Emley's UniBond League opener at home to Marine tomorrow (3.00).

Manager Paul David is without Marc Thompson and has a doubt over the experienced but injured Lennie Curtis for the Premier Division contest.

And with his side having failed to keep a clean sheet during an otherwise encouraging pre-season programme, that's a worry.

"It's a problem we have to rectify, but at this stage, we lack cover in central defence," admitted David.

The manager will be looking for another hefty goal haul from former Sheffield Wednesday trainee Adam Muller (21 last season), and will also put faith in ex-Town frontman Steve Kenworthy, former Ossett Town frontman James Nestor and winger Andy Wright, who is back after a spell at Sutton.

Also signed are midfield duo Simon Watson, who has been at Leeds, and Irishman Eamon Chapman.

Just a little note on yesterdays game

I thought the team did quite well against poor opposition, but I noticed one thing why did Kettlewell play everywhere except centre midfield, I have been watching most the pre-season games & have been very impressed with his all round game but the way he was moved around positions yesterday suggested they are looking for another position for him.

Surely you've got to play your best players in their best positions, it's the same with Kenny he played as a striker yesterday an he scored a hat-trick.

I just don't understand the way the team keeps swapping & changing.

2. Wright
3. Muzyczka
4. Thompson (back in the squad again)
5. Wood
6. Curtis
7. Watson
8. Kettlewell
9. Nestor
10 Kenworthy
11 Chapman (seems to be from Worksop - squad player)

Substitutions were complicated - hope I have them right

14. Staniforth - on for Muzyczka
15. Whitfield - on for Nestor Whitfield is from Askern Welfare
16. Hitchin - on for Wood
17. Muller - on for Kettlewell?

8. Kettlewell I think came back on for Watson

Unused sub (12?) Olesiuk - don't know much about him

Crowd was exceptionally bad - but game not really advertised - the away ones weren't either although I e mailed Lindsey Nicholson

Nicho's mum and dad were there - had a good chat with them

As for the game - Kenworthy had the best chance in the 1st half - decided to pass from the 6 yard line rather than shooting with essentially only the keeper to beat.!!

Tansley played for Stocksbridge.

0 - 0 at half time

Stocksbridge scored 1/2 way through 2nd half
I think we hit the post after that - don't know how it didn't go in.

Result: W Emley 0 - 1 Stocksbridge

We are going to have to do better than that when we come up against Marine a week tomorrow.

In the end we had to settle for a draw, in a game we could have won. We led 1-0 at halftime through a James Nestor Goal. Some poor defending in the 2nd half gifted Worksop two goals in as many Minutes. Before Muller levelled almost Straight away. Both sides had chances to win, but it finished all square.

Wemley defended extremely well apart from a 90 second spell late in the second half which threw away the chance of a victory. Thought Woody and Lennie were giants in defence. Gerd barely saw the ball except for when he scored.

Not sure what Worksop were playing at but it was pretty poor whatever it was. Didn't appear to be a single supporter from W-Emley in the crowd of 140 odd. Thanks for not coming! - actually a few of us were there.

PD spent the afternoon dressed as a bouncer. Either that or he's on a pretty serious promise tonight!!!

Jul 25th W Emley v Huddersfield Town

Town pay heavily for sloppy error!
Jul 26 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

PETER JACKSON flogged his squad up and down the Belle Vue pitch as a punishment for conceding yet another sloppy goal.

It came just 17 seconds into the second half and was handed on a plate to W Emley wingman James Nestor.

Reacting quickly to a ball played over the top from the kick-off, Nestor seized on John McCombe's ill-judged header towards keeper Paul Rachubka and rounded the No1 to score.

The goal rewarded Paul David's battling UniBond Premier Division side for some sterling effort and put Town's largely second-string line-up under pressure to respond in defence of the Mick Green Memorial Trophy.

That's exactly what they did in the 59th minute thanks to the skilful finishing of John McAliskey.

The talented forward, who went close with a first-half drive well saved by his former Town colleague Danny Trueman, was released down the right by Junior Mendes with the home defence back-pedalling to cover.

McAliskey cut into the box, whipped the ball around a would-be tackler and then scored with the deftest of chipped shots which brought cheers of relief from the Town contingent in a crowd of 346 at the rugby league ground.

It served to highlight Town's poor finishing in the rest of a match in which they dominated possession, but it was the mistake at the back which was uppermost in Jackson's mind after the final whistle.

"If we had taken our chances we would have won comfortably because possession was probably 80-20 in our favour, but once again we've conceded a sloppy goal which has cost us dearly," he said.

"I told the lads at half-time that if we let in a goal they would be running after the game - and running hard - and that's exactly what I've made them do. We have to stop conceding."

David, meanwhile, was happy with the application shown by his squad, including striker Mick Norbury, Kirkburton cricketer Richard Kettlewell and ex-Town forward Steve Kenworthy.

"The lads did very well at times," he said. "You know when people are putting their bodies on the line to make goalline blocks (from Danny Schofield and Taylor-Fletcher in the first half) that you've got the right attitude."

Emley were unlucky not to add to their tally from a lightning burst by substitute Andy Wright immediately after Nestor's goal, but his shot from a tight angle rolled right across the face of goal.

Taylor-Fletcher hit a post while Schofield was denied twice in the six-yard box as Town passed the ball well in the first half.

Schofield should have done better in the second from a Lee Fowler tee-up, and skipper Michael Collins fired high and wide after another probing run.

Result: W Emley 1 - 1 Huddersfield Town

W Emley: Trueman, Quinn (Hitchen, 63mins), Staniforth, Kettlewell, Thompson, Curtis, Fox, Muller (Elliott, 73), Norbury (Wright, 47), Kenworthy, Nestor.

Town: Rachubka, Lloyd, Adams, Collins, McCombe, Hardy, Schofield, Ahmed (Fowler, 67), McAliskey, Taylor-Fletcher, Mendes (Young, 67).

  Collins piles on pressure

Jul 26 2005 By Mel Booth, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

YOUNG Michael Collins could be a surprise starter when Town kick-off the new season at Nottingham Forest.

The 19-year-old midfielder was made captain for last night's 1-1 friendly draw at W Emley in which John McAliskey netted Town's equaliser.

Manager Peter Jackson has been impressed with the Republic of Ireland youth cap in pre-season and confirmed today he's giving the strong midfield competition plenty to think about.

"Mikey has been doing really well," said Jackson, who used Lee Fowler as a substitute for the first time since his return from a trial at League II Grimsby.

"He came into the side last season and did ever so well and it was a tribute to how hard he has worked in pre-season that I made him captain for last night's game.

"The thing I like about Mikey is that he never hides in a game. He is always wanting the ball and he always gives everything.

"He is a great example to the other young players coming through the Academy of what can be achieved with plenty of hard work and dedication.

"Mikey knows this is a big season for him and he has worked extremely hard through the summer.

"He has come back fit and strong, he has knuckled down to all the work we've been doing and, at the moment, he looks a very decent player indeed."

While Collins - who made eight League I appearances last term - played the whole match against Paul David's side (who took the lead through James Nestor), Adnan Ahmed completed 67 minutes at the Atlantic Solutions Stadium.

"Adnan has been struggling with a knee injury and is behind the others in terms of pre-season work, but he's a naturally fit lad and he just needs games," said Jackson.

"He'll play again against AFC Emley up at the Welfare Ground on Thursday (7.00) and we'll take things from there."

Jackson, whose side shared the Mick Green Memorial Trophy with their UniBond Premier hosts, was unhappy not to keep a clean sheet.

"We've conceded sloppy goals in Ibiza, at Harrogate Town, Mansfield and now here and it's not acceptable," said Jackson.

"I have said all along that clean sheets get you into play-offs and win you championships and we have to start cutting out the stupid mistakes.

"I know it's only pre-season and you shouldn't read too much into it, but I want good habits at the club and good habits mean not conceding sloppy goals."

Town set sights on full focus
Jul 25 2005 By Mel Booth, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

KEEPER Paul Rachubka says the big League kick-off at Nottingham Forest is now coming firmly into focus for Town.

The 24-year-old ex-Charlton stopper is a certain starter at the City Ground on Saturday week and believes the next 11 days will enable Peter Jackson's squad to get fully prepared.

Next step is tonight's friendly against W Emley at Belle Vue (7.30), when Jackson includes Rachubka because Phil Senior is suffering an injury.

"We have worked tremendously hard so far and now we are really starting to plan for the season," explained Rachubka today.

"The first few weeks have been about getting ourselves fit and now it's about getting things together and really pushing on.

"We can see Forest in our minds already, and our team will now start to really take shape with everyone competing extremely hard.

"Hopefully, that competition will take us to the next level and we will be able to show the value of the work we've done in pre-season when it comes to that first match down at Forest."

Rachubka played in Friday's 2-1 friendly victory against Mansfield at Field Mill, when Andy Booth and Junior Mendes scored either side of a Simon Brown striker for Carlton Palmer's League II side.

Marine sail in on opening day
Jul 21 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

W EMLEY kick-off their new UniBond League Premier Division campaign against Marine at the Atlantic Solutions Stadium on Saturday, August 20.

Promoted teams joining the division from the UniBond First are AFC Telford and North Ferriby United, while Ashton United were relegated from the Conference North.

  Reserves Return To Leeds

United reserves will be returning to Leeds next season with a new home at South Leeds Stadium, after the club finally received final league approval for the move.

The reserves home games had been based at W Emley's Atlantic Solutions Stadium for the past three seasons, and at York City's Bootham Crescent prior to that.

In a bid to boost attendances the club looked at bringing reserve team football back to the city and various options were considered before deciding on South Leeds Stadium, which is just over a mile away from Elland Road.

A stipulation of the decision to allow the reserves to play at South Leeds is that four of their home games must be played at Elland Road. The club will decide which games will be selected for this after the season's fixtures are announced later this week.

Leeds United Members Club and season ticket holders will be admitted free to all home reserve games.
  Albion sign ex-Town star
Jul 18 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

DELIGHTED Ossett Albion officials have hailed the signing of ex-Town star Rob Edwards as the biggest in their history.

The Dimple Wells club beat off competition from W  Emley, Ashton United and Bradford Park Avenue, among others, to secure the services of the versatile 35-year-old on a 12-month contract.

Holme Valley-based Edwards, who has already trained with Albion, will make his debut in Saturday's home friendly against Ronnie Glavin's Worksop Town, from the Conference North.

Eric Gilchrist's side kick-off their UniBond League First Division campaign at Mossley on Saturday, August 20.

Edwards will also be coming up against the likes of Bishop Auckland, Brigg Town, Clitheroe, Goole, Kendal Town and Rossendale United, who host Town Reserves in a friendly on Wednesday (7.45).

Former Liversedge manager Gilchrist is aiming to improve on last season's final placing of 12th with a squad which also includes ex-Town midfield man Michael Senior and Huddersfield brothers Sean and Nathan Hazelden, who are both defenders.

Gilchrist's assistant Ashley Berry believes the arrival of Edwards, who also played for Crewe and Chesterfield, will provide a major boost for the 61-year-old club.

"It's a massive deal for us, and an exciting one," he said.

"I've known Rob personally for quite a while now.

"He's a quality footballer and a great bloke, and his influence is already rubbing off on the younger members of the squad.

"He might be 35, but he was playing League football as recently as April, and he's in terrific shape.

"He trained with Huddersfield in the early stages of their pre- season, and he's looking sharp.

"After 500 League games, it will be change for him to play at our level, but I know he's looking forward to the challenge."

Edwards played 199 times in two spells at Town, scoring on his last appearance in the 4-0 home win over Swindon on April 30.

That was the 506th match in a career which began under Dario Gradi at Crewe in 1987.

Originally a striker, Edwards was regarded as an attacking midfielder when he first joined Town for £150,000 in 1996.

He was converted to a left-back during Peter Jackson's first spell as Town manager.

Having been let go by Steve Bruce in 2000, when he moved to Chesterfield, Edwards was one of Jackson's first recruits when he returned to the Town hot seat in ther summer of 2003.

He played a key role in the promotion play-off win over Mansfield at the Millennium Stadium the season before last, scoring one of the penalties in Town's shoot-out success.

Prendergast for Blackpool?

Jul 5 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

ACCRINGTON'S former Wakefield-Emley winger Rory Prendergast, 27, is to join Town's League I rivals Blackpool for pre-season training with a view to a permanent move.

Accrington chairman Eric Whalley said: "Although he's a good player, we'll never stand in the way of someone who wants to further their career."

"Rory has made no secret of his desire to play in the Football League and Blackpool are a big club."

Prendergast, pictured, has started 56 Conference games for Stanley in two years.

He attracted interest from Bristol Rovers last season.

Jenkinson blows the final whistle

Jun 30 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

STALWART Raymond Jenkinson (regular supporter of Emley at Belle Vue), has taken care of the Huddersfield BUPA Junior Sunday League's funds for longer then he cares to remember during a 25-year stint as an official.

But the Lepton man has finally called it a day and announced his decision at the annual meeting at Bradley and Colnebridge.

Jenkinson was secretary before becoming treasurer.

Since taking on the latter post, he has guided the finances of the League in a meticulous manner.

But his value to the organisation will not be lost entirely as he has agreed to become secretary for the Under 17 and Under 18 sections.

President Laurie Platt said of Jenkinson's 25 years' service:

"Ray's work, first as secretary and then as treasurer, has been an invaluable part of the League's growth into one of the biggest in the country.

Stuart Wood takes over as the new League treasurer.

Brighouse won four of the annual fair play awards, at Under 11 (Division I), Under 13 (Div IV), Under 16 (Div I) and Under 17 (Div II).

Northowram had three at Under 11 (Div IV), Under 12 (Div II) and Under 13 (Div III).

Other winners were: Westend (2), Kirkheaton (2), Gomersal Boys, Thornhill, Elland, Lepton Highlanders, Buttershaw, Hartshead, Storthes Hall, Scholes, Newsome United, Kexbrough, Emley, Netherton and Kirkburton.

Officials elected:

President, Laurie Platt; chairman, Eric Davies; secretary, Richard Poulain; treasurer, Stuart Wood; fixture secretary, Eric Kershaw; assistant fixture secretary, Shaun Townend; mini-soccer fixture secretary, Paul Watson; mini soccer results, Ray Higgins; results co-ordinator, Barry Shepherd; child welfare officer, Jenny Kershaw; referees' appointments secretary, John Kingdom.

Section secretaries: Dymphna Townend (U7, 8, 9); Ray Bissett (U10), Harry Marsden (U11, 12); Mick Reddy (U13, 14); Peter Appleby (U15, 16); Ray Jenkinson (U17, U18).

Glavin signs up Hurst - again!

Jun 10 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

FORMER Town player Chris Hurst has rejoined his old Emley manager Ronnie Glavin at Worksop.

The midfielder, who had two spells at Emley around his unsuccessful year-long stint with Town in 1997-98, has moved from Conference North rivals Gainsborough.

The elder brother of Notts County striker Glynn Hurst, another Emley old boy, had been at Gainsborough since summer 2001. Before that he was at Ilkeston and Frickley.

Hurst renews acquaintance with a string of other ex-Emley players at Worksop.

Simeon Bambrook, Miles Thorpe, Mark Wilson and Steve Nicholson were all in the squad which finished 17th in Conference North last season.

Glavin is looking for a big improvement and has made a series of close-season signings already, with former Rotherham midfielder Tom Smith arriving from Hereford.

Former Chesterfield, Cheltenham, Exeter, Rochdale and Burton Albion defender Michael Simpkins is another new face.

Meanwhile another ex-Emley player, defender Mark Haran, has moved to Stalybridge Celtic from Harrogate.

Haran has linked up with ex-Harrogate boss John Reed at Stalybridge, who only just avoided relegation from Conference North.
