Sikh
make it four on trot with fine win!
GNG
SIKH TEMPLE won their fourth District FA Sunday Challenge Cup in
succession and fifth in all at Barr Street on Sunday. They
beat Emley Athletic 3-1 in an entertaining final that produced some
neat football. But
the game only really opened up after Temple had gone in front in the 39th
minute. And
the strike was the first of a double for Brighton Mugadza - the
centre-forward producing a diving header from a Kelvin Gayle cross. With
just five minutes to the break Sikh went in search of a second and Mugadza
obliged again, this time racing onto a through ball and shooting home. Paul
Pyke had a great chance to sew up the game 12 minutes into the second half
but volleyed wide from the centre of goal from a cross from Nathan James,
who troubled Emley throughout with his pace. From
the goalkick Emley went straight to the opposite end and reduced the
deficit, which set up the game nicely. Jez
Elson got in a great cross from the goalline and Pyke rose in a crowded
goalmouth to head home. Play
then went from end to end with both sides creating but squandering
chances. David
Walsh had to be alert to stop a Mugadza free kick and then thank his
fellow defenders for blocking two follow-up shots. While
at the other end, McLachlan had to block a Wayne Short shot and then
bravely dive at the feet of Elson as he prepared to lash in the rebound,
getting injured in the process. Emley
were getting on top at this stage, taking the game to Temple, whose
defence responded well to the pressure. But
Temple responded and took the Cup with an 87th minute strike. James,
who was later to be named man-of-the-match, ran onto a through ball from
Pyke, outpaced the defence and shot home. And
so started the celebrations, as it was too late for Emley to make up the
deficit. Emley
Ath: Walsh, Allison, Barnes (Leahy, 56mins), Dunne, Cosgrove, Howson,
Jackson, Berry, Short (A) (Dickinson, 56mins), Elson, Short (W). Subs
(not used): Bentley, Brock, Bond, England. GNG Sikh Temple: McLachlan (G), Joseph, Kelvin (Gayle), Mitchell, Thomas, Botchway (Castle, 90mins), James, Howe, Kouchaki (Wadsworth, 77mins), Mugadza (St Hilaire, 90mins), Pyke. |

Emley
are a big draw as Town season peters out (Look back into the past)
THE
excitement of Emley's season and the monotony of Town's was reflected by
the gates when the teams turned out within four days of each other at
Leeds Road. Town's
end-of-season Division IV engagement with Southend United attracted 2,275,
just 139 more than Emley's Yorkshire League Cup final clash with Ossett
Albion. For
Town, it was the penultimate match of an inconsistent season during which
they had risen to fourth after a 1-0 derby win over Barnsley in mid-March
only to fall away during April, when they lost five on the spin. The
draw with Southend was their third successive stalemate, and after a
goalless clash at Crewe the following Saturday, John Haselden's side were
to finish ninth. Southend,
who ended up a place below, took a 19th-minute lead through Derrick Parker
before Peter Howey levelled after 27. But
the home player to most catch the eye was midfield schemer Kevin Johnson,
who showed more talent and confidence than the rest of the team put
together. While
former apprentice Howey struggled to impose himself against a solid
Southend rearguard, Martin Fowler, usually a midfielder, looked wary in a
trial position of sweeper. Up
front, strikers Bobby Campbell and Wayne Goldthorpe were starved of decent
quality balls. Haselden
had hoped to take a look at trialist midfielder Eric Probert, the former
Burnley player. But
even though both the Football League and Southend were happy, his club
Notts County refused. Probert was allowed to play for the Reserves against Wolves at Leeds Road two days later, but had little chance to shine as the second string were overrun 5-0 in the Central League clash. Emley
produced an enterprising display in their big final, but experienced
Ossett proved too strong and ran out 3-1 winners. Albion's
Peter Taylor, widely regarded as the top marksman in the Yorkshire League,
scored two for his team, who despite being under pressure for long spells,
managed to carve out a three-goal lead before winger SB Greaves pulled one
back. Skipper
Mick Pamment and fellow big men Dennis Brookes and Dave Cook all did their
best to batter the Ossett defence into submission, but were unable to make
a breakthrough. While
Emley's hopes were dashed, Bradley Rangers were celebrating after beating
Dudley Hill 4-1 in the West Riding Challenge Cup final. Wingmen
Bob Sykes and Owen Atkinson paved the way to victory for the West
Yorkshire League leaders, the former finishing the scoring after the
latter had opened with a double. Phil Whiteley grabbed Rangers' other goal. |

Albion v Emley (League) Stalemate May 2 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
EMLEY
ended the UniBond League Premier Division campaign in 12th place after a
1-1 draw at Witon Albion. Marc
Thompson fired Emley ahead in the 24th minute, shooting home after the
home defence could only partially clear when Steve Kenworthy's shot was
parried. But
Witton levelled four minutes before the break when striker Mike Moseley
cut between two defenders and lifted the ball over keeper Danny Trueman
from an acute angle. Result: Witton Albion 1 - 1 Emley |

Emley
v Prescot Cables Emley's
late winner Apr
29 2005 By
The Huddersfield Daily Examiner ADAM
MULLER'S injury-time goal gave Emley a 2-1 win over Prescot Cables in
their final home game of the UniBond League season last night. Paul
David's side moved up to 12th thanks to their 13th victory, and they will
aim to collect another in their closing match at Witton Albion tomorrow. Emley's
best chance of the first half fell to Stephen Kenworthy after 24 minutes. He
turned his marker before running one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only to
shoot wide. Emley
took the lead in the 67th minute when Christian Fox finally forced
the ball over the line after Muller's header from a Kenworthy cross was
palmed onto the bar by goalkeeper Ryan Mahon and Lee Ryan's follow-up
header hit the woodwork and bounced back. Prescot,
who had threatened only fleetingly, levelled on 84 minutes through Mike
O'Donnell. With
five minutes of stoggage time added, every player from the Merseyside
club, including their goalkeeper Mahon, pushed up for a corner. They were caught out when Emley cleared and stormed upfield for Muller to tuck away the classic breakaway winner. Result Emley 2 - 1 Prescot Cables

Spennymoor
crisis has major impact
CRISIS
club Spennymoor United are set to be booted out of the UniBond League -
but the North-East club's problems look set to have more impact on
Workington than Emley. Because
they have failed to fulfill a string of fixtures, Moors' record has been
wiped from the League table. While
13th-placed Emley, who host Prescot Cables in their last home game
of the season tonight (7.45), have lost three points as a result, the
leadership has changed, with Farsley Celtic replacing Workington. With
just one automatic promotion spot up for grabs (the next four go into the
play-offs), Farsley are top with an advantage of four on goal difference
with one game to go (they are at home to Bishop Auckland while Workington
host Whitby), The
League will hold on EGM on May 23 with a motion that Spennymoor be
expelled. David,
whose side lost 5-2 at Spennymoor on the first day of the season, but
gained revenge with a 3-0 home win on December 11, said: "It's
difficult to find a fair way of sorting out such a complex issue. "You
could argue the sides who should have played Spennymoor are awarded
maximum points, but there's never an easy answer. "At
least it's only cost our club three points. At this key stage, to have
been deducted six points through no fault of our own would have been a
bitter pill to swallow." Emley,
who would go 12th by winning tonight, travel to Northwich-based Witton
Albion on Saturday for their final match. Squad: Trueman, Fox, Tonks, Thompson, Wood, Curtis, Tansley, Kettlewell, Kenworthy, Muller, Hitchen, Ryan, Washington, Staniforth.

Always
the bridesmaid
(A look back to the past)
EMLEY
Football Club's season of frustration continued in the final of the
Sheffield Senior Cup. Eliminated
at the semi-final stage in the FA Vase (by St Helens Town) and Northern
Counties East League Cup (by Harrogate Railway), the former District
League side lost 3-2 after extra time to Denaby United at Oakwell. Destined
to also miss out on the League title, Emley were within two minutes of
lifting the county cup. Steve
Codd and John Francis had netted for a 2-1 lead after Emley had gone
behind early on. But
Howard Millington headed Denaby back into it, and they received a further
boost a minute later when Emley striker Francis was sent off after a
skirmish with Mick Stewart, who had fouled him as he broke clear from
halfway. Bob
Spotswood fired Denaby ahead four minutes into extra time, but even then,
Emley had a chance to equalise when Devan Rufus's header was handled on
the line. Codd, however, missed the 102nd-minute spot kick |

Town v Town Emley consolidate with draw Apr 18 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner EMLEY earned a goalless draw at Leek Town to consolidate their 12th-place standing in the UniBond League Premier Division. The result virtually put paid to Leek's play-off hopes.Anthony Tansley drove two long range shots wide for Emley while Alex Brown and Dean Butterworth went close for Leek. The hosts dominated the second half at Harrison Park without making the breakthrough. They were almost undone late on when the referee failed to award a free-kick in their favour for a backpass and Adam Muller, left, broke swiftly to the other end, only to slice his final shot wide. Result: Leek Town 0 - 0 Emley Paul David's side host Prescot Cables on Wednesday (7.45). |

Injured
player's £38,000 payout Apr 15 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner AN amateur soccer player has won almost £38,000 compensation for a tackle which wrecked his career. James Slaughter suffered a badly-broken leg while playing a game at Brighouse Town. And he has now won a landmark out-of-court compensation battle against the club he was facing. The tackle on Slaughter was made by Max Joice, a top sportsman from Huddersfield, who was playing for Brighouse. Slaughter was playing for Hemsworth. Joice, who has also played for Emley and is currently captain at Skelmanthorpe Cricket Club, was alleged to have made a two-footed challenge on his opponent. Now Slaughter has received £37,773.69 in compensation from Brighouse Town's insurers after the tackle which left him with two fractures to his right leg. The incident happened in the game at Brighouse on February 15, 2003. Slaughter said: "I was having a good game. I had scored the first goal and helped with the second goal, so we were leading 2-0 at half time. "In the second half of the match, Max Joice made a challenge upon me. I thought it was a very reckless and dangerous tackle. He caught me just below the knee, leaving my right leg broken and bleeding. "I was in extreme pain. It was immediately obvious that my leg was very badly damaged." Slaughter was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax, where he was diagnosed with a fracture to his right tibia and fibula Unfortunately, his progress was not straightforward. He had to remain in hospital for a week and underwent an operation to insert a metal plate into his right leg from ankle to knee. Subsequently, he was advised by his consultant that his bones were not healing correctly. The plate was not removed until May 2004. For over three months, he had to rely on his partner to take care of him as he was suffering from considerable pain in his leg and was unable to move around the house without assistance. He was only able to return to his work as a builder in May 2004 after the metal plate had been removed from his leg. John Davis, from the Newcastle office of national law firm Irwin Mitchell, said: "The injuries that James Slaughter sustained were entirely due to a reckless and dangerous challenge. "This sort of behaviour should not be tolerated on any football pitch and the level of compensation reflects the injuries that James sustained." Mr Joice no longer plays for Brighouse. |

Emley clinch win Apr 14 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner EMLEY dented Whitby's UniBond League title hopes with a 2-1 success at the East coast. Emley moved up to 12th after last night's win while Whitby remained third, three points behind leaders Workington. Adam Muller notched his 20th goal of the season with a great solo run, cutting in from the right and beating three defenders before curling his shot into the bottom corner past goalkeeper David Campbell on 34 minutes. Whitby's Anthony Ormerod was denied by Emley keeper Danny Trueman after 43 minutes when he leaned back to tip the ball over. Christian Fox and Muller both had chances saved after the break. But Lee Ryan made it 2-0 on 53 minutes with a 20 yarder. Trueman produced a fingertip save to deny Whitby's Karl Richards. But the hosts pulled a goal back on 82 minutes when a quick throw-out from the keeper was helped on by Neil Raddigan for Graham Robinson to slot home. Result: Whitby Town 1 - 2 Emley Emley: Trueman, Hitchen, Tonks, Thompson, Tansley, Curtis, Kettlewell, Fox, Kenworthy, Muller, Ryan (Washington, 87mins). Sub not used: Kamara.

Emley hit
by player departures Apr 13 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner EMLEY have lost four key players ahead of tonight's tough trip to UniBond League title-chasing Whitby Town (7.45pm). Striker Robert Pell has joined Ossett Town while goalkeeper Paul Cuss has joined Farsley Celtic and is replaced by former Ashton keeper Danny Trueman who has been put on contract. Both players left the club on good terms after agreeing deals with their new teams. But striker Ben Jones (Leigh RMI) and winger Andy Wright (Sutton Town) left club officials surprised by their sudden departures with just five games remaining and officials are considering whether to launch a complaint. Nicky Wood is absent for tonight's trip due to work commitments while Paul Staniforth sits out the second game of a three-match ban. David has recalled the services of Lee Ryan, Kris Kamara and former Town reserve player Joe Washington, back from coaching in America, to bolster his squad. Paul David's 13th-placed side picked up a tremendous point with a depleted squad in the goalless draw at leaders Workington on Saturday. But tonight's East Coast match could provide a sterner test with third-placed Whitby looking to go level at the top on 79 points with Workington. Squad: Trueman, Tonks, Hitchen, Thompson, Curtis, Kettlewell, Tansley, Fox, Kenworthy, Muller, Kamara, Ryan, Washington.

High-scoring
drama as Emley make Sunday final Apr 5 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner EMLEY ATHLETIC (who play in the Huddersfield Sunday League Division 1 and play on the Welfare Ground) moved through to the final of the District FA Sunday Challenge Cup with a penalty shootout win over Walkers Arms. The sides could not be split after 115 minutes of entertaining play at Marsden's Fall Lane ground and were tied at 6-6.But after five penalties had also hit the back of the net, Emley goalkeeper David Walsh pulled off a save to deny Walkers and take them to a 5-4 penalty shootout win. Goals came thick and fast in the first half, with Craig Ruscoe putting Walker's in front after only eight minutes before Joe Howson equalised.Emley then took the lead through Max Joice on 13 minutes but Andrew allison made it 2-2 on 28.It was now Walkers turn to take the lead When Adam Johnson scored just before the break. There were more twists and turns to come, though.Wayne Short equalised before Walkers Leigh Holmes was then sent off for alleged foul and abusive language to a linesman.Dave Ingham put Emley back in front. Allison equalised again; Joice put Emley in front, Allison equalised; Johnson put Walkers in front; Ingham equalised. And that was before the penalties! |

Bamber Bridge Goal feast as David's side destroy Bridge Mar 21 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner EMLEY were full of the joys of Spring after overwhelming relegation-threatened Bamber Bridge from start to finish of this UniBond League Premier Division clash. Adam Muller opened the scoring for Paul David's 13th-placed side side on 17 minutes, converting Andy Wright's deep cross, and the only surprising thing about a one-sided game was that there were no further goals in the first half.Marc Thompson hit the bar with a cracking 30-yard thunderbolt after 21 minutes, and Robert Pell had a header ruled out for offside. With Bamber Bridge defending far too deeply, rampant Emley attacked without remorse. Former Town midfielder Dean Gorré finally made it 2-0 with a sublime free-kick on 53 minutes and Wright made it 3-0 three minutes later, firing home unchallenged after strong support play by Muller.John Turner and Peter Wright both had chances for Bridge, but were denied by deputy Emley goalkeeper Danny Trueman. The home side returned to the attack and Ben Jones added a fourth on 85 minutes, beating two men and rolling the ball home after keeper Andy Banks committed himself outside the box.In the closing seconds, hard-working Jones turned provider for substitute Stephen Kenworthy, but the former Town Juniors player hit the bar from six yards out. While fifth-bottom Bridge
are just a place above the drop zone, the win eased Emley's fears of being
dragged into the relegation dogfight. Emley's biggest League win since January 2002 - 5 - 0 against Bamber Bridge! Emley: Trueman, Fox, Tonks, Thompson, Wood (Tansley, 45mins), Curtis, Gorré, Pell (Kenworthy, 56mins), Jones, Muller, Wright (Staniforth, 72mins). Attendance: 157. * Emley's home match against Prescot Cables on Saturday, April 2, has been postponed because of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats' televised RL Challenge Cup clash with Hull the following day. No new date has been fixed.

Blyth
Spartans v Emley Dale's hat trick scuppers Emley Mar 16 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner INCONSISTENT Emley slumped to a 16th UniBond League defeat of the season. After Saturday's emphatic 3-0 win at home to Lincoln United, confidence was high but Blyth debutant Robert Dale did the damage with a hat trick. Adam Muller put Emley ahead on nine minutes, latching onto a long punt up field by goalkeeper Paul Cuss, but after sustained pressure by Blyth, Scott Bell levelled with a tap in from a corner. A brace by six-foot-plus striker Dale gave Blyth a 3-1 lead at the break as Emley simply failed to defend corners. And worse was to follow just before the break when goalkeeper Cuss took a nasty knock on the head and was replaced at half time by Marc Thompson, with centre-back Nicky Wood going in goal for the second time in three games . On 48 minutes Stephen Kenworthy pounced to make it 3-2 from close range, converting Paul Staniforth's long throw-in, but Dale could not be denied his hat trick goal on 63 minutes as the Emley defence were caught square. Anthony Lawther made it 5-2 in the final minute, reacting first to tap in Wood's parried save.

v Lincoln United Bright Gorré debut lifts David's men Mar 14 2005 Mar 14th By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner EX-TOWN striker Dean Gorré inspired Emley to an impressive win over Lincoln United, which completed a UniBond League double and eased manager Paul David's relegation worries. The 34-year-old Dutch midfielder showed deft touches on his debut as he linked neatly with Stephen Kenworthy and two-goal Ben Jones. Kenworthy put Emley ahead after just five minutes, turning Paul Staniforth's long throw past goalkeeper Nick Conroy from inside the six-yard box. Gorré went on a solo burst after 23 minutes, but despite leaving three players trailing, shot was straight at Conroy. Christian Fox went close with a 25-yard drive on 34 minutes. Lincoln rarely threatened but their best chance of the half should have been converted by Paul Miller, when any contact on Brendan McDaid's cross would have meant an equaliser. In-form Jones netted with a cheeky shot on 51 minutes. Lincoln substitute Sam Wilkinson headed narrowly over and McDaid had a goal disallowed for offside. Kenworthy teed up Gorré for a long range shot on 70 minutes and while he struck it cleanly, the ball crashed back out off a post. The third goal finally came on 77 minutes when Adam Muller launched an accurate cross from the right and Kenworthy's low header was turned over the line by the lurking Jones, who now has four goals in as many games. Emley
bolster squad with Dutch ace Gorré Mar 1 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner EMLEY have signed former Town midfielder Dean Gorré. The former Feyenoord star, who made more than 50 appearances for Town after signing for £300,000 from Ajax in 1999, is a real coup for the UniBond League outfit who are still striving to secure their Premier Division status for next season. Gorré, of Bowden, Cheshire, has been a free agent since being released by Barnsley, then Blackpool at the beginning of December. Boss Paul David said: "This isn't a publicity stunt. "Dean has signed for us and hopefully we will be able to get at least half-a-dozen games out if him by the end of the season. We'll certainly be looking to include him for the home match against Lincoln United on March 12. "He has been focusing on coaching qualifications, with a view to coaching in America in the future, but for now he is happy to learn a bit more about our grass-roots game by signing for us." He added: "He looks in great shape and will be a real asset to us, especially as chief playmaker, passing the ball about and at set pieces. He will really be able to shine on our surface at Wakefield." Gorré is not the first big name star to drop into non-league football. He joins a myriad of big-name players in the UniBond League including former Aston Villa centre-back Shaun Teale, who is player-manager at UniBond Division I side Chorley, after guiding Premier Division Burscough to FA Trophy success in 2003. And former Nottingham Forest striker Nigel Jemson is still bagging the goals at Ilkeston Town alongside fellow Forest veteran Steve Chettle, to name just a couple. Surinam-born midfielder Gorré, 34, made a total of 63 League appearances for the Terriers before before moving to Barnsley in 2001 for £50,000. Wakefield-Emley chief executive Elliot Stroud added: "Dean is a tremendous signing for us. "To attract such a big name player, with his wealth of experience, is a massive boost." |

Gateshead v
Emley David's side lose men and the match Feb 14 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner NINE-MAN Emley slumped to their 15th UniBond League defeat in 30 matches this season when fellow strugglers Gateshead notched a double up in the North-East. Windy conditions and inconsistent decisions by the officials spoiled this match. And tempers boiled over in the second half when Emley's Andy Wright and Robert Pell were dismissed within two minutes in separate incidents of violent conduct. Both felt they had been harshly treated with striker Pell claiming he didn't make any contact with opponent Paul Thompson. On 51 minutes, Emley's Adam Muller hit the bar and on 56 there was pushing and shoving in the penalty box, which resulted in Pell's dismissal and a penalty, which Thompson took and Paul Cuss saved. Emley boss Paul David was ordered to the stand soon after, when he was incensed that no action was taken when Muller was scythed down by Ben Cattanch. But goals eventually came, with Adam Smith putting Gateshead ahead on 75 minutes, cutting inside from the left and driving a low shot into the bottom corner. Then, after the referee had indicated four minutes of stoppage time, Emley pressed forward in search of an equaliser and were hit on the break with a second goal by David Colvin. Ben Jones, who replaced Stephen Kenworthy after just 30 minutes after the Town old boy was the victim of a crude challenge, notched a very late consolation. Result: Gateshead 2 - 1 Emley Emley: Cuss, Tonks, Benn, Tansley, Wood (Hatto, 80mins), Curtis (Staniforth, 28mins), Kenworthy (Jones, 30mins), Fox, Pell, Muller, Wright. Emley v Hyde
United Inspired
first half falls flat After
three games without scoring a goal, UniBond League Premier Division outfit
Emley promptly scored three . . . but also conceded the same tally! Paul
David's side had cruised into a comfortable 2-0 lead after one of their
best first-half performances of the season. Adam
Muller pounced onto a mistake by defender Kieran Delaney on 12 minutes
when the defender's back-header crashed off a post and Muller slotted home
the rebound. And
just five minutes later Lennie Curtis doubled the tally when Christian Fox
picked out Andy Wright on the overlap and his low cross, struck first
time, was driven home by the midfielder Curtis from 16-yards, giving
goalkeeper Tim Mullock no chance. Paul
Cuss, in the Emley goal, did not have a save to make from lacklustre Hyde,
third in the Premier Division, until the 35th minute but got down well to
gather former Stalybridge striker Matty McNeil's weak shot. Stephen
Kenworthy almost increased Emley's lead from a Wright corner, but the
keeper scrambled across to turn his cheeky close-range shot round the
post. Hyde
showed more purpose after the break, McNeil having an early shot cleared
off the line by Rob Tonks but they didn't have long to wait. Johnson
pulled a goal back for Hyde on 53 minutes but Emley greeted it with an
immediate response when Rob Pell added Emley's third from a
counter-attack. Despite
their two-goal cushion, Emley's lead always looked fragile as the quality
of their first-half play evaporated. A cheeky back-heel from Johnson on 79 minutes put Hyde within touching distance and the equaliser, which had a touch of inevitability about it, was sealed as Johnson bagged his hat trick on 81 minutes, beating the Emley defence to the aerial ball to head home at the far post. The point lifted Emley one place to 15th ahead of Saturday's trip to 19th-placed Gateshead who drew 1-1 at Frickley last night. Result: Emley 3 - 3 Hyde United Emley: Cuss, Tonks, Staniforth, Tansley, Wood, Curtis, Wright (Lindley, 89mins) Fox, Pell, Muller, Kenworthy (Jones, 87mins). Sub not used: Benn. |

Jermone
signs new deal Feb 4 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner CAMERON JEROME, the Huddersfield footballing product who has been a big hit in South Wales, has signed a new three-year deal with Cardiff City - and hailed the help of dad Hanson. Best known through his exploits with Emley and Brackenhall United, Hanson also acts as his 18-year-old son's advisor, and Cameron, one of five children, couldn't be happier. "My dad has always been close at hand to discuss my future and to help me decide on the best course of action," explained former Royds Hall and New College student Cameron, who has two brothers, Samuel and Reuben, and two sisters, Nadine and Shannon. "Even though it's a long journey, dad and my mum (Hazel) come and watch me as often as possible." They have been rewarded with a string of impressive performances for the Championship club, and four goals in nine starts plus nine more appearances as a substitute by their talented son, who played junior football for Stile Common and had three years at Town before drifting away from the game. "I finished school along with everyone else at the age of 16 and took about nine months out to sort out exactly what I was going to do with my life," he said. "During that period I began playing locally again on parks pitches and started to get my old interest going once again." After stints at Grimsby, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough, he was invited down to Cardiff by coach Paul Wilkinson, who had been impressed when working with the teenager at Blundell Park. "Having first met Paul at Grimsby I had complete trust in him and when he suggested that I come down to Cardiff and play in a few games to let the club know what I could do I jumped at the chance," he added. That was in October 2003, but because of an ankle injury suffered in training, it wasn't until January 2004 that he was able to play any matches for the Academy side. Cameron, who was also interesting West Brom and Wigan, did enough to win a contract until the end of the season, then signed a fresh one-year deal last summer. He began this season banging in goals for both the Academy and Reserve teams, and got his break when Cardiff were hit by injuries, making his debut in September's goalless home draw with Leeds. "I was on the bench and lucky enough to be given 15 minutes at the end. I was a bit nervous to start with but I can usually take everything in my stride and I was just excited to get out on to the pitch," he said. Cameron netted his first goal in the 3-3 Carling Cup third-round draw with Bournemouth, Cardiff winning 5-4 on penalties. He has since scored at Reading (in a 2-1 loss) and in the home clashes with Gillingham (3-1 win) and Wolves (1-1 draw). A back injury suffered against Leeds at Ninian Park a fortnight ago looked set to have ended his season early, but scans showed the injury wasn't as bad as first feared. "We were worried it was a stress fracture, but thankfully the scan results were all-clear," said Cardiff manager Lennie Lawrence. "That's good news for Cameron, and we are also delighted he has signed a new, long-term contract."

Guiseley v Emley Emley on the slide after loss Feb 7 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner EMLEY were beaten 1-0 in a competitive derby at Guiseley. Sam Denton's 63rd-minute strike was enough to push Paul David's men down to 16th in the UniBond League, seven points above the drop zone. And it gave Guiseley a double over their West Yorkshire rivals after a 3-1 win back in September. Tempers boiled over on the hour when Nicky Wood brought down ex-Town player Mark Stuart in the area. The Guiseley man dusted himself down - then fired the spot kick over the bar! Both Wood and Stuart continued discussions after the miss with the Emley man being booked for a push. Soon after Guiseley's Kieron O'Brien went down under a strong challenge from new signing Anthony Tansley. O'Brien retaliated by kicking Tansley in the chest and was dismissed. But the home side still managed to conjure a winner. Lennie Curtis fouled Simon Parke 20 yards out and Denton's free-kick went in off the foot of a post to the delight of home fans in a 272 crowd. Paul Cuss
denied Parke, Stuart, Emley old boy Scott Jackson and Lee Connor while
Emley's best chance fell to Adam Muller, who shot straight at the
goalkeeper. Emley: Cuss, Tonks, Wood, Curtis, Staniforth, Tansley, Fox, Benn (Jones, 67mins), Kenworthy (Lindley, 84mins), Pell (Wright, 57mins), Muller. |

Emley v Marine David's double chance goes begging Jan 24 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner Emley missed out on the chance of a quick UniBond League double after last week's 2-1 win at Marine. Paul David's side were left to rue missed first-half chances during a match which failed to warm the cockles. Ben Jones fluffed the best of those opportunities after nine minutes, blasting wide when it seemed easier to score. Phil Lindley and captain Marc Thompson were both off target with headers after great supply work by Andy Wright, who started as a late replacement for centre-back Nicky Wood, who was injured in the warm-up. Marine played themselves into the match from the half hour. Stephen Cain accepted Dean Thurston's knock-on after 35 minutes, but instead of playing the one-two option, crossed to Paul McNally, who headed wide. Five minutes later Gary Randles squandered the Merseysiders' best chance of the match when he lashed Thurston's excellent cross well wide of the target. Emley goalkeeper Paul Cuss spread himself to deflect a Thurston shot after the break and produced an excellent save from Randles on 72 minutes, tipping his shot from Cain's corner over. In a rare second-half chance for Emley, Lennie Curtis, arriving late at the far post, blasted Gary Hatto's corner wide. The point lifted Emley to 12th in the UniBond League Premier Division, while Marine are 16th in a table topped by former Football League club Workington, who won 4-1 at Prescot Cables. Emley's next match is at home to Burscough on Saturday. Result:
Emley 0 - 0 Marine |

Boro
enjoying Senior service Jan 12 2005 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner CONFERENCE club Scarborough will do all they can to keep ex-Town striker Chris Senior. A string of scouts have flocked to the East coast to check out the in-form 23-year-old. Huddersfield-born Senior, released by Town early in 2003 because of financial constraints, has slotted 10 goals this season and won a call-up to the England non-League squad. But Scarborough chairman Malcolm Reynolds has issued a hands-off warning to clubs wanting to poach any of his club's rising stars. "We are trying to bring players in, not sell them. None of our players will be going anywhere," he insisted. "Chris Senior has made himself a bit of a reputation now, especially with his call-up to the England non-League squad, and there has been a bit of interest in him. "But we are looking to see it through to the end of the season with the same group of players, perhaps adding one or two new faces to the squad along the way." Former League club Scarborough are handily tucked in seventh place under manager Nick Henry, the former Halifax player. Reynolds added: "We are in a lovely position at the moment, having such a young squad, and we want to hang onto the lads for next season and mount a real promotion push. "There is a great camaraderie here and the lads are really starting to gel, so if they do stay together for another season then we could really start going places." Senior set a Conference record by coming off the bench 36 times last season. This time, the aim has been to cement a regular starting berth, and he has forged a bright partnership with ex-Leeds and Notts County player Tony Hackworth. "The more I play with Tony the better we are working together and we really seem to have hit it off this season," said Senior, who was in the initial squad for the England non-League team's game in Italy in November, but didn't play. "I hope that I can stay in and around the team so we can continue to play up front together because hopefully it will lead to more goals." Senior, who had a short spell at Wakefield- Emley after leaving Town, will be back in action for Boro on Saturday, when they head to fellow former League club Barrow in the third round of the FA Trophy. Halifax, who beat Crawley
Town 1-0 in the Nationwide Conference last night at The Shay, host
Northwich. |

Emley v
Radcliffe Borough
Emley sunk by
late strike EMLEY were sunk six minutes from time and slipped to 17th in the UniBond League Premier Division after a 2-1 home defeat by Radcliffe Borough. Paul Maguire climbed with goalkeeper Paul Cuss to challenge for Ciaran Kilheeney's left-wing cross and got a crucial nick. It was a cruel blow for Emley, who had started in menacing fashion with Ben Jones firing in a third-minute shot just wide. Soon after Emley took the lead when indecision by goalkeeper Danny Hurst allowed Adam Muller to nip in, beat defender Maguire and screw the ball home. On the half hour Radcliffe's Kilheeney looked poised to shoot but squared the ball for Steve Foster to scuff a shot wide. Muller dummied defender Hill on 33 minutes but hit the side-netting. And Kilheeney should have levelled on 39, only for his strike to hit a post. Foster finally equalised on 44, pulling away from his marker to drive home his 20th goal of the season after a cross by Lee Duffy. In an explosive start to the second half, Foster had a goal ruled out for offside while Emley's Muller drove a gilt-edged chance into the side-netting. Foster's 64th-minute effort was ruled out for offside too. Emley tried
to hit Borough on the break and Christian Fox turned provider for Muller
on 82 minutes, but Hurst came charging out to block, and Fox steered the
rebound wide. |
