Draw ends
disappointing season
They made it
difficult for themselves by conceding a first-minute goal when Alex Kevan
rose at the far post to head home from a corner.Top scorer Simeon Bambrook
restored parity with his 22nd goal of the season after 58 minutes,
latching on to a long through ball before drawing goalkeeper Paul Phillips
and powering the ball home. Kevan notched
his second for the visitors on 72 minutes after tricky striker Jimmy
Haarhoff surged into the box and pulled the ball back for his fellow
frontman Kevan to curl a beauty past goalkeeper Paul Cuss. But just as
Ronnie Glavin's side looked set to suffer another defeat, 17-year-old
substitute Scott Clarke produced a clinical finish to give the Emley
faithful hope that there are talented youngsters around to back up an
ageing side. Glavin
admitted: "It has been an extremely frustrating season. It is one of
the few times during my management (since November 1994) that we have
finished in the bottom half and that's a disappointment. Our three main
strikers have all been hit by injury and that's cost us dearly. We didn't
have Simeon Bambrook at the start of the season because he was recovering
from an operation. Then we lost Danny Day, who had surgery on his knee. Then
just as Chris Senior found a rich vein of form, he went under the knife,
after getting injured while playing for Town Reserves. That meant we never
had the chance to hit any consistency up front." Glavin added: "Our defence has remained as good as any other in the League, we just lost that cutting edge up front. But we had a decent run in the Trophy, which only ended at Burscough because of injuries and suspensions. And we have a few young lads who have stepped up from the Reserves and Youths and have not disappointed." Bambrook
stars Bambrook, who
has been the subject of constant transfer speculation in recent weeks,
with UniBond League Premier Division rivals Worksop Town reputedly heading
the queue, took his season's tally to 21. After a
goalless first half - when substitute goalkeeper Lee Wilson was forced to
start in defence for the opening 10 minutes as Lincoln Adams got lost
en-route to South Elmsall - the breakthrough came in the 65th
minute.Frickley substitute Craig Elkin got in a tangle with goalkeeper
Mark Samways and Nick Manousios broke through only to be held back by
Elkin. The home
defender was sent off and Bambrook converted from the penalty spot.Emley's
second, in the 80th minute, was a classic breakaway from a Frickley
corner.Under 19 player Scott Clarke launched a 30-yard ball to Bambrook,
who beat two defenders, feined to shoot with his favoured left foot, then
used his right to hit the top corner. The third
arrived a minute from time, when Frickley goalkeeper Samways handled a
back pass, giving away an indirect free-kick. Rob Tonks picked out Bambrook, who again found the top corner. Emley's Manousios was sent off in the 87th minute for a second bookable offence. Result

Adams
the saviour in stalemate Wakefield and
Emley striker Simeon Bambrook had a day to forget, losing the ball before
Fearns curled his goal past Paul Cuss and then being sent-off 11 minutes
from time for foul and abusive language directed at a referee's assistant.
Such behaviour has blighted his season.Early play was slowed by several
offside decisions against Motors as the Emley back four held firm. Emley went
close on 28 minutes, from a Bambrook corner, when Andy Wilson was unable
to steer a tricky back-post ball into the net.But Motors - who made
national headlines after knocking QPR out of the FA Cup before succumbing
to Macclesfield 2-0 in the second round - hit back. Derek Ward
took a throw-in from the left to Carl Nesbitt and Steve Aspinall's
delivery was headed just wide by striker Nicky Young.Emley reverted to
three at the back for the second period and good shielding of the ball by
Danny Day allowed pacy Michael Reynolds to collect, but his weak shot was
comfortably held. Emley's
equaliser was started and finished by Adams. He teed up Reynolds with a
nice pass and he, in turn, fed Nicholson for a teasing, inswinging cross. Emley had a
scare, however, when six Motors players were left holding their heads in
their hands after powering shots on goal in a single, frenetic attack. Each time an Emley defender managed to get in the way and the point was secured by Ronnie Glavin's 14th-placed side. Result Emley 1

v Runcorn
Missed chances only downside in cracking Belle Vue Premier clash
In a
thoroughly entertaining match - enhanced with a super refereeing display
from Gary Kellett, but watched by a Belle Vue lowest crowd of 167 - the
scoreline could have reflected a rugby score with chances missed and great
saves made. And Ronnie Glavin's side were straight on the ball when Simon
Jones - providing cover for colleagues' work commitments and illness -
launched a cracking left wing cross for recalled striker Simeon Bambrook
who pulled it wide after just 30 seconds. At no time did
Emley ever look like being overrun by Liam Watson's side as in their
previous two meetings this season, and when Danny Day cannoned a header
from Mark Wilson's cross off the bar on 23 minutes with Lincoln Adams'
follow-up header cleared of the line, it looked like it was going to be
`just one of those nights!' And so it turned out to be. Runcorn's
Chris Price got on the end of the immediate breakaway but was denied with
a clearance off the line by Adams. And a superb solo strike by Bambrook on
29 glanced off the paintwork.Emley striker Wael Nazha was carried off soon
after following a foul by Peter Ellis and the stoppage disrupted the
first-half momentum. But it was not long before it resumed after the
break, with Runcorn goalkeeper Tony McMillan producing two outstanding
double saves in two minutes. First, Day's
well-struck shot from a tight angle was only parried by McMillan in to
Bambrook's path but the keeper regathered to block the follow-up on 54
minutes. And McMillan proved a thorn in Emley's side again on 56 when he
turned a Bambook powerdriver into the path of centreback Rudi Coleano and
his low shot was blocked once again. The result keeps Emley in 13th place. Result Emley 0

Wakefield
and Emley clinch 13th League win Lincoln
Adams put Ronnie Glavin's side ahead on 33 minutes, when a Steve Nicholson
free-kick was headed down by Andy Wilson and the striker was on hand to
slot the ball past goalkeeper Paul Pettinger from eight yards. Midfielder
Miles Thorpe made it 2-0 on 49 minutes when Paul David's free-kick was
headed back across the area by the unmarked Mark Wilson and Thorpe drove
it over the line with the goalkeeper stranded. Lee
Ellington pulled a goal back for Gainsborough on 73 minutes when Paul
Cuss's punched clearance was launched back over his head.Instead of
celebrating the strike, Gainsborough player-manager Phil Stant, the former
Town player, seemed more intent on getting referee Ian Nolan to send off
Thorpe, who handled on the line, despite Rudi Coleano mistakenly being
booked for the offence. The goal set up a grandstand finish and while centre-back David was sent off for foul and abusive language on 82 minutes, Emley held on for a 13th League win. Result

Walsh's
sizzler is setback for Emley Frontline
workhorse Danny Day had put Ronnie Glavin's side ahead on eight minutes
when he drilled a shot into the top corner from Ryan Crossley's free-kick. But
former Kettering player Walsh's leveller on 77 minutes, his second goal in
successive matches, was conjured out of nothing when, after being left a
little too much room 25 yards out, he let rip with a powerful drive which
flew past Paul Cuss's fingertips into the roof of the net, much to the
delight of the vocal home contingent in a 288 crowd at the Horsfall
Stadium. It
was a rare lapse in a disciplined, focused and inventive performance by
Emley. The
much-maligned Lincoln Adams had his best 90 minutes in an Emley shirt,
epitomised by a timely interception, while playing at centre-back, on 20
minutes.Captain Steve Nicholson's free-kick was charged down by Andy
Hayward, who released Jason Maxwell.Adams, however, defused a dangerous
situation with an excellent covering tackle. Wael
Nazha, back at one of his former clubs, was a little inconspicuous, but
Day was a constant presence, making deep probing runs with occasional
support from Michael Reynolds.Only goalkeeper Chris Howe stopped Day from
scoring a second on 25 minutes, when he charged to the edge of his area to
smother the ball at the busy striker's feet. At
the other end, ex-Town man Simon Collins' snapshot through a crowd of
players was punched away by the alert Cuss.On 63 minutes, in a delightful
move down the left, Mark Wilson picked out Crossley, who charged through
on the overlap, and Day was just inches from converting the cross after
outjumping centre-back Graham Mitchell, another Town old boy. Bradford
continued to step up the pressure in the second half - despite being
limited to clear chances - but a long crossfield ball to Richard Tracey
was blocked by Cuss, who was well-placed at the near post.Emley countered
immediately and Nazha sprayed a ball deep into the opposing box for Day to
tee up Andy Wilson, but his clean strike was matched by a fine save from
Howe. With only League pride left to play for this season, last night's performance makes a mockery of Emley's lowly League placing of 17th. Park Avenue are seventh. Result

| Apr 2nd 2003 | Glavin's 10 men hold out for draw Apr 3 2003
By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
The remaining 10 men applied themselves
commendably to the task, particularly in the second half when Harrogate
couldn't make their advantage tell. And that left a season's Belle Vue UniBond
League lowest crowd of 147 asking what might have happened with 11 men. Emley created the first chance in the 15th
minute, when Mark Wilson was inches away from netting after Danny Day
hooked the ball across the face of goal.Harrogate's main threat came from tall
targetman Marc Smith, but experienced centre-back Paul David kept him
under wraps. Wael Nazha laid the ball off well for
Michael Reynolds to breakaway on 30 minutes, but his return ball was
volleyed over by the Lebanese star.Day constantly got into good positions up
front but was frustrated by a lack of support. Andy Wilson and Miles Thorpe kept a tight
hold on midfield after the break - referee Graham Atkins had to be
replaced by an assistant after picking up a calf strain - and Emley
threatened a breakthrough several times. But they nearly threw a point away late on,
and were grateful to the industrious Thorpe, who cleared off the line from
former Bradford striker Robbie Whellans' scrambled effort. Result Emley 0

slump again First the Bradford-based striker, released
by Droylsden, was carried off wearing a neck brace and taken to hospital
for a check-up after a 57th-minute collision with centre-back Mark Hume.Then Ronnie Glavin's side fell victim to
Lee Warren's 87th-minute penalty to slip to 15th in the UniBond League. Nazha was originally signed by Glavin in
October 2000, and that season finished third top scorer with 17 goals
behind Simeon Bambrook, who is being linked with a transfer to Worksop,
and Danny Day as Emley narrowly missed out on promotion to the Conference. But in front of 243 at Belle Vue on
Saturday, those heady times seemed a long way off as Emley threw away a
safe point against the second- placed Cumbrians by giving away the spot
kick which led to a second successive home League loss. Neil Tarrant surged into the box and a
mistake by Rudi Coleano forced teammate Paul David to take evasive action
by hauling down the Barrow player.Warren made no mistake to condemn Emley to
their 12th defeat of a disappointing season. While there was no sign of Bambrook on
Saturday, Ryan Crossley, who has also been linked to Worksop, did figure
and it was the former Town defender's quality balls to speedy winger
Michael Reynolds that provided Emley with their most potent weapon. But strong Barrow centre-backs Hume and
Mark Salmon dealt with the threat comfortably. As the midfield battle unfolded, both sides
tested the referee's patience and judgment with cynical fouls and dives.Barrow's Simon Shaw was red carded in the

Late Lancaster blitz
wrecks Glavin's bid Danny Day chalked up a sixth-minute opener
for the home side, slotting into an empty net after goalkeeper Mark
Thornley's fumble. And Ronnie Glavin's men went on to produce
a slick first-half display, much improved on recent games. Emley were on the wrong end of a 5-2
scoreline at Lancaster at the start of month, but at the break at Belle
Vue on Saturday, they looked more than capable of taking revenge. But from a position of security, playing
fluid football and limiting Lancaster's chances, they capitulated. Rudi Coleano had a moment of madness when
he carelessly bumped over Andy Whittaker on 67 minutes, giving the striker
the opportunity to dust himself down and level from the spot. And worse was to come as Brian Welch put
the visitors ahead on 85 minutes, firing in a cracking drive which struck
the underside of the bar and was ruled to have crossed the line by a
linesman.Whittaker then completed his hat trick,
netting two in the final minute to shatter Emley's undefeated home League
record and leave them 14th in the 23-team Premier Division. Equally worrying to home officials was an
attendance of just 180, the lowest at Wakefield in the League this season Result Emley 1 Lancaster 4. Wakefield and Emley: Cuss, Nicholson,

| Mar 18th 2003 | Ashton v Emley President Cup Semi Final. Dormer strike leaves Emley trophy cabinet bare for another season
Unfortunately, for Wakefield and Emley,
Jason Dormer's first-half stoppage time strike has left their trophy
cabinet miserably bare again. With only League pride remaining and Emley
locked into 12th place in the Premier Division boss Ronnie Glavin needs to
raise his side for a final push up the League with just nine games left. That fightback should begin on Friday night
at home to Lancaster (7.45pm) after Saturday's Belle Vue clash was brought
forward a day because Wakefield Trinity Wildcats are in Super League
action against Wigan at Belle Vue on Sunday. Paul Robinson was drafted into last night's
squad, slotting in at left-back alongside Lincoln Adams, Rudi Coleano and
Steve Nicholson, after boss Ronnie Glavin was forced into defensive
changes as centre-back Paul David struggles to recover from ankle ligament
damage and Ryan Crossley was absent through work. And they were soon tested when Ashton
skipper Gareth Morris launched a long ball which just evaded Danny White
at the far post. Emley, whose play spluttered without
bursting into life, had their first real chance of note on 24 minutes when
an exquisite touch from former Town player Adam Fowler left him clear in
the box to tee up Lee Ryan who hesitated then fluffed the shot.Enterprising Ashton, who have shared home
and away League draws with Emley since their promotion to the top flight
this season, looked frequently to use the pace of former Emley player
Steve Smith, and did so with good effect. James Riordan picked out Smith on 25 and
the stocky forward wrong-footed Robinson but shot straight at reserve team
goalkeeper Lee Wilson. But Robinson was on hand to clear a
dangerous threat from Danny Royle a minute before the break when Coleano
and Adams got in a tangle. But, as the half-time tea queue was
beginning to form, Morris drove a teasing corner in from the left and
Dormer drove a blazing strike through a crowd of players into the centre
of the net. Ashton's lead appeared to refocus Emley's
attention after the break, and Ryan was unlucky to see his strike cannon
off keeper Danny Trueman's legs. And on 78 minutes 19-year-old substitute
Phil Taylor, signed from Brodsworth, beat his marker and nearly caught out
the keeper who recovered well to claim the effort which skidded then
bobbled in front of him. Adams made a timely interception as Royle
was dangerously poised on 85 minutes, but despite high workrates from
Emley grafters Mark Wilson, Miles Thorpe, Andy Wilson, and Steve Nicholson
they could not inspire their side to victory. Result Ashton 1 Emley 0 Ashton United: Trueman, Rush, Carty,

Glavin's side get
key away success But Mark Wilson's 76th minute strike gave
Emley their first Premier Division win since January and the relief at the
final whistle was palpable.Leading striker Simeon Bambrook readily
accepted a long ball from midfield and squared a perfectly weighted pass
to Wilson and his goalbound drive was palmed into the net by Whitby
goalkeeper David Campbell on 76 minutes. But the result was not enough to lift Emley
from their mediocre 12th place.Until Wilson's strike, the only thing to
cheer at the East Coast seaside resort, was the pre-match fish and chips,
as the players demonstrated a lot of industry but very little creativity. Whitby should have taken the lead on 27
minutes when Arun Wilford cut into the box, shrugged off Coleano and
all-too-easily turned Adams, but shot over the bar when well placed. And just before the break a right wing
corner caused consternation in the Emley defence but captain Steve
Nicholson finally mopped up the danger.Miles Thorpe and Andy Wilson worked like
Trojans in midfield while reserve team keeper Lee Wilson proved reliable
despite enduring a difficult second half with the low sun in his eyes. After Wilson's strike, Emley's frustrations
lifted and they finally showed fluidity in their play.Former Town player Adam Fowler could have
doubled Emley's tally when he received Bambrook's pass and surged into the
box but was denied with a great save from Campbell at full stretch. Result Whitby 0 Emley 1 Wakefield and Emley: L Wilson, Nicholson,

Bambrook miss is so costly
Bambrook, who was booked for dissent before stepping up for the spot-kick attempt, drilled the ball low and hard to the right but stand-in goalkeeper Peter Crookes got his body behind it. Emley were forced to start the match with 10 men as captain Steve Nicholson was caught up in motorway traffic (midfielder Andy Wilson arrived at Rossett Park with just five minutes to spare). And they were made to pay a heavy price, as Nicholson was running from the dressing room to the dug-out when Marine's Michael Keegan launched an accurate ball to the far post and Eddie Hussin outjumped the rejigged defence to head home on three minutes. It was a severe blow for Ronnie Glavin's goal-shy side, but they responded magnificently, only to find deputy goalkeeper Crookes in outstanding form! Former Town player Chris Senior partnered Mark Wilson up front while Simon Jones was recalled into the side to stabilise an injury-hit defence. With a cheeky back-heel, Wilson freed Senior on 13 minutes and his low drive, hit first time, was turned round the post. Just four minutes later tenacious Miles Thorpe held his head in his hands after seeing a header flipped over the bar by Crookes' fingertips. Inconsistent decisions by referee Andrew Butler - he booked Jones for rolling the ball away, while disregarding Paul McNally when he punched the ball over the stand - had the game on a knife edge, but the players held their discipline intact in difficult circumstances. Marine made it two on 71 minutes when Emley's midfield failed to close down former Runcorn player McNally and he let rip with a beauty from 25 yards which gave reserve goalkeeper Lee Wilson no chance. Instead of celebrating a much-deserved point, Bambrook's penalty miss meant Wakefield and Emley suffered a 10th defeat of the season and they now find themselves in 12th place. Result: Marine 2 Emley 1 Marine: Crookes, Murphy, Randles, Bainbridge, Connolly, Culshaw, Keegan, Hussin, McNally, Stanhope (Taylor, 78mins), Black. Subs not used: Nolan, Dolan. Attendance: 222. Comment (Statto): Much better performance, why didn't we play
like that against Burscough? Lindsey comments that Bambrook was booked for dissent prior to taking the penalty. This sickened the Emley supporters!! We had won a fair penalty in the last few minutes of the game. seems like Bambrook was trying to get the Marine player sent off and said something out of order. That was plain bloody stupid. Instead of concentrating on the penalty to give us a well deserved point we all believed that when he was running up to take it he probably had the thought of the the booking in his mind!! |
| March 10th 2003 | Jimmy Martin Resignation For those of you
outside the Examiner area.. here is the story
Emley rocked as assistant boss Martin
resigns before postponed semi-final The popular Glaswegian announced his
departure ahead of Emley's UniBond League President's Cup semi-final at
Ashton on Saturday which was postponed five minutes before the scheduled
3.00pm kick-off because of waterlogging (replay Tuesday, March 18,
7.45pm). His departure comes just two months after
long-serving secretary Richard Poulain left after a seven year stint. Martin, who has been with the club for four
seasons, said: "I just felt that I was stagnating. "I'm keen to move on now and I'm
looking for a new challenge. If the right job comes along with a new club
then I would be interested." He added: "Obviously I have had some
great times with the club, particularly two season's ago when we finished
runners-up to Stalybridge Celtic which brought the highest points and
lowest points of my time with Emley. "It was a great time for the club, the
team was fantastic but then it was gut-wrenching to be pipped at the post
for promotion. "I was particularly disappointed for
Paul David and Simon Jones because it would have been great for those two
quality players to see out their time playing Conference football." Former Town player Martin (he played
alongside Trevor Cherry and Frank Worthington in the youth ranks) also
played at Liversedge, Buxton, Brooks Sports and Junction before taking
over Sunday League side Rowley Hill and guiding them to success after
initially cutting his managerial teeth at Almondbury United. His success with Lepton-based Rowley Hill
led to him being headhunted by Bradley Rangers featuring Mick Green, Paul
David and Jon Dyson. He turned things round, masterminding his
side to three County Cup finals and a runners-up spot in the Northern
Counties East League. From Bradley, Martin put his energy into
Ossett Albion, taking the club from the brink of relegation to end his
first season in ninth place. After taking eight months out of the game a
phone call by Emley boss Ronnie Glavin took Martin to Emley and between
them the pair guided to the club to unprecedented success taking the club
to the FA Cup third round in 1997/98 and coming within two points of
promotion to the Nationwide Conference two seasons ago. Martin was instrumental in building a
successful club and making Emley a serious force to be reckoned with in
non-league circles. Glavin, who was busy preparing his side for
tonight's trip to Marine (7.45pm), said: "Obviously it's come as a
bit of shock but we will give ourselves time to adjust and have a look at
things in due course." |
|
After the recent run
of results we were wondering on the way to last night's game what the
chances of a 5 - 3 scoreline at Maltby would be? Surely this sequence could be some kind of
record. I wonder if anyone at the club wants to write in to the Non League
Paper to challenge other supporters Nationwide to match that? Maybe we
don't want to open ourselves up for ridicule! What chance 5 - 4 (either way) at Ashton -
after all it could go to extra time One key thing about the Maltby game was the
absence of many 1st teamers. Is there some severe lack of motivation here? |

Maltby Main v Emley Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup Goalkeeping swap shop as Emley crash out Mar 6 2003 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner For the third time in four games Emley
leaked five goals as they were forced to make four changes of goalkeeper
to a side comprising mainly reserve team players. Original keeper Lee Wilson was sent-off 10
minutes from the end of normal time after fouling the centre-forward and
was replaced by centre-back Nicky Wood, but he could not prevent Maltby
pulling a goal back from the spot. Lee Ryan hit back with a cross for Ross
Martin to head home to give Emely a 3-1 lead. But in the closing minutes
Wood misread a cross for Maltby's second and then the Northern Counties
East League Division I side took the tie into extra time, scoring from a
late corner. The first period saw Ryan fancy his chances
in goal but let a weak daisy-cutter slip under him for Maltby to take a
4-3 lead before Ryan was replaced in goal by Martin. And, as 10-man Emley finally felt the toll
late in the game, they paid the price as resurgent Maltby broke clear to
add a fifth. Emley have a quick chance to cast away
their blues when they travel to Ashton on Saturday for the Unibond League
Presidents' Cup semi-final. Result

| Feb 25th 2003 | Emley v Kidsgrove (President's Cup) AET. Extra-time blast settles it! Extra time was needed to dispose of First
Division Kidsgrove, 31 places below them in the UniBond League ladder.Ronnie Glavin's side now travel to Ashton
on Saturday, March 8, in the semi-final, while the home match against
Barrow will be rescheduled. Kidsgrove's Darren Twigg had levelled five
minutes from the end of normal time to cancel out Chris Senior's opener
before Emley went `goal crazy' in extra-time.Simeon Bambrook re-discovered his
goalscoring touch to net an easy hat trick while industrious Senior
completed a brace on 102 minutes as Kidsgrove caved in. Early signs for Emley were not good,
however, when transfer-listed Nicky Wood was embroiled in rows with
teammates Miles Thorpe and Paul Cuss.No official reason has been given for why
experienced defender Wood is now available, although Glavin is looking to
shake up his squad for the last three months of the season, after his side
miserably bowed out of the FA Trophy 5-0 at Burscough where Wood scored an
own goal and was sent-off. At times Emley gave resilient Kidsgrove a
lesson in possession football, but without really penetrating. On 43 minutes Bambrook skipped round Steve
Walsh and cut into the six yard box, but he then opted to blast his shot
which almost ended up in the chip pan in the canteen shack, built in the
corner. But when the Leeds-based fireman offered a
delicate chip on 64 minutes it nearly paid off, keeper Tim Mullock getting
across well to make a fine save.Four minutes later a defensive howler from
Bradley Cullen let in Senior, when his attempted back pass failed to
reach, and the former Town striker, making his first start for Glavin's
side, showed his mind was as quick as his feet to nip in and curl it in
from a narrow angle.Lee Ryan could have sealed it for Emley at
the end of normal time but his shot was blocked by the keeper when clean
through, before Emley finally showed a touch of finishing class in the
extra 30 minutes. Result Emley 5 Kidsgrove 1 (AET) Wakefield and Emley: Cuss, Nicholson

For those who missed
it and can bear to read it -- read on at your peril!!!
Glavin's blast after Trophy quarter-final
hopes are crushed Glavin, hoping to guide Emley into the
quarter-finals for only the third time, was hampered by injuries and
suspensions for the Victoria Park fifth-round contest. But he refused to make excuses, saying:
"We were missing big-game players, but I have never been in charge of
a team that has given up like that. It was shocking and
unacceptable." The defeat in the all-UniBond League clash
was Emley's heaviest since they slumped 7-1 in a Premier Division against
Altrincham at Moss Lane in April 1998. With defender Ryan Crossley and midfielder
Mark Wilson banned, striker Danny Day recovering from a knee operation and
experienced centre-back Paul David failing a late fitness test, Glavin
called on experienced old boy Simon Jones to fill-in at left back.Jones and former Town goalkeeper Paul Cuss
were the only two players to emerge with any credit. On an afternoon Nicky Wood would rather
forget, the experienced centre-back inexplicably headed a Ryan Bowen cross
into own net on 11 minutes when under pressure from Kris McHale.Worse was to follow for the normally classy
defender when he was dismissed two minutes from time for a professional
foul while giving away a penalty. Cuss came to the rescue with a solid block
from Peter Wright's spot kick to prevent a sic-goal mauling. But he couldn't keep out Burscough on 24
minutes, when experienced striker John Norman tip-toed through the defence
to slot home his side's second from close range. On 31 minutes Lee Ryan beat three defenders
and delivered a great cross for striker Simeon Bambrook. But he glanced then header wide, and
Emley's hopes of a fightback disappeared.Cuss produced a finger-tip save to deny
John Lawless in first-half stoppage time. But Burscough did go further ahead after 74
minutes, when Mark Byrne delivered a precision cross for McHale to nod
home.Norman made it 4-0 three minutes later and
the rout was completed after 80 minutes when Lawless raced clear to win a
one-on-one with Cuss and slot the ball home.Emley were denied even a consolation when
Rudi Coleano's header was tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Matthew
Taylor. Glavin concluded: "Sometimes during a
season you get one game when everyone has an off day and you get punished.
Today was that day for us." Result Burscough v Emley

Fowler makes Emley
debut in stalemate at Hucknall With Glavin forced into changes because of
injuries and suspensions, Fowler slotted in at right-back alongside Nicky
Wood, Rudi Coleano and Paul Robinson, and admitted: "It felt quite
strange!"It was difficult stepping into the
team alongside lads who have played together for a long time, but they
were superb towards me. "The pitch was very difficult to play
on, I had to make sure that I watched the bounce of the ball very
carefully to make sure I didn't get caught out, but I was playing in the
same position as for Town Reserves, which helped. As for the differences between Avon
Insurance League and UniBond, Fowler explained: "It was a lot more
physical and more direct but the pace was not as quick. "I just had to decide when to break
forward and when to hold back and I kept checking with Woody."It's just about getting used to the
players around you and a different set-up."Goalkeeper Paul Cuss denied Mark Nangle in
a one-on-one, before Hucknall, managed by ex-Town striker Phil Starbuck,
went ahead after 25 minutes. Barnsley old boy Clint Marcelle fired in a
corner and Paul Mitchell converted at the far post.Hucknall had a penalty claim denied 10
minutes later when Marcelle went down. Emley had more of the second half, and
after Lincoln Adams fired over on 77 minutes, Lee Ryan finally levelled on
83, slotting home from a narrow angle.Ryan could have stolen all three points
when Andy Wilson pulled the ball back to the edge of the box, but he shot
straight at the goalkeeper. Result Hucknall 1 Wakefield & Emley.1

| Feb 4th 2003 | Hendon v
Emley (FA
Trophy 4th rd Replay).
We were there! What a great game. I'd
forgotten about the penalty until I read this - good long term memory
terrible short term. Willy's goal brought back memories of Jonah
at Nuneaton! Unfair to pick out any particular player they were all heroes
but Danny Day played out of his skin at the back when PD had to be taken
off.We thought our chance had gone but what a finish to a game. Feb 5 2003 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily
Examiner
Boss Ronnie Glavin admitted the thought of
penalties had begun swilling round his mind when midfielder Mark Wilson
caught hold of a defensive clearance and launched a spectacular full-
blooded 35yard drive which dipped into the top corner on 113 minutes to
seal the thriller.Nine times out of 10, Wilson's strike would
have ended up in the car park, instead, the substitute delivered a goal
worthy of gracing any Cup final to spark manic celebrations as goalkeeper
Paul Cuss ran the length of the pitch to dive on his teammates who lay
spreadeagled by the corner flag. The strike also promoted jubilant scenes
from the Emley dug-out as Glavin, assistant Jimmy Martin and physio Daryl
Brook, leaped from the bench. The result, against the high- flying Ryman
Premier Division outfit, sends Emley into the last 16 and they travel to
Burscough on Saturday, February 22, in the fifth round after the
Lancashire outfit beat Alfreton 2-0 last night. Delighted boss Ronnie Glavin said: "I
thought it was a truly tremendous performance, especially as everything
went against us early on with two innocuous bookings."There were a lot of big hearts out
there today and, after chances were missed by both sides, it was going to
take something special to break the deadlock. We got it!" Midfielder Miles Thorpe added: "As,
extra time wore on, I kept glancing at the goals and thinking, `heck, are
they shrinking? They appeared to be getting smaller!' Thankfully we didn't
need penalties." Emley made just one change from Saturday's
match with centre-back Nicky Wood absent because of work commitments. On a playing surface which bore the patches
of Old Trafford and the sand of Stamford Bridge, Hendon often reverted to
long balls over the top which was meat and drink to the Emley back four. On 22 minutes Simeon Bambrook picked out
Danny Day in the box, who was booked for diving, while minutes later
Hendon striker Ricci Crace was not cautioned when he tripped over thin
air. But moments before the break Woking referee Bruce McLaren pointed to
the spot when Steve Forbes' free kick struck Paul David on the shoulder,
the referee deemed it handball, but justice was done when Cuss got down
well to turn Kieran Gallagher's shot round a post. Day saw his curling effort tipped on to the
post on 53 minutes while, at the other end, Eugene Ofori's shot was
blocked by Rob Tonks and the follow-up inexplicably blasted over by Crace.Golden chances fell to Andy Wilson but he
headed wide from Bambrook's free kick on 68 and had an 80th minute shot
run down and blocked by Steve Butler. Emley were forced to re-jig when David
hobbled off after landing awkwardly from an aerial challenge with Forbes,
with Day slotting alongside Rudi Coleano. Emley should have had the match wrapped up
on 77 minutes when substitute Chris Senior delivered a defence-splitting
pass but Bambrook side-footed it into the crowd from six yards.Instead, frustration turned into relief
when wily Hendon substitute Dale Binns tore upfield, fed Crace, who, with
the last kick of the 90 minutes, brought heroics from man-of-the-match
Cuss - the former Town Reserve keeper stretching every sinew to tip the
ball onto the woodwork. Result Hendon 0 Emley & Wakefield

Emley v Hendon (FA Trophy 4th rd). Capital cup quest! Meticulous planning by boss Glavin was thrown into the air after just 14 minutes when Town old boy Ryan Crossley and Hendon's Paul Yates were red carded after exchanging punches after Emley broke forward from defending a corner. Then, a minute before the break, industrious midfielder Mark Wilson was also sent for an early bath by Scunthorpe referee Keith Lawson for foul and abusive language. Hendon's Iain Duncan flew in at Wilson, striking him on a previously injured wrist. The challenge seemed worth a booking for a player who had already been cautioned, but the referee opted to act on Wilson's response by showing him a straight red card. Hendon, fourth in the Ryman League Premier Division, had caused Emley problems at the back, with skilful ball control on the edge of the home area. But strong commitment by a defence well marshalled by Paul David kept the North London side at bay. However, it was referee Lawson who had the biggest influence on a cracking cup-tie.Commonsense did not prevail, resulting in a stop-start match during which both sets of supporters in a 519 crowd became riled by a string of bizarre decisions. Glavin remained diplomatic, saying: " I thought after the first 10 minutes this had the making of a great tie and, although both players did raise their hands, I thought the sending offs were harsh so early."Commonsense should have prevailed with maybe a booking apiece, but the referee stuck to the letter of the law."The second sending off was very disappointing but we worked very hard afterwards and this tie is not over yet."We will go down tomorrow and have another good go." Goalkeeper Paul Cuss saved a curling shot by Eugene Ofori on 23 minutes and tipped Ricci Crace's first-time effort round the post on the half hour. But Emley picked up their attacking game after the break, when Simeon Bambrook rifled a shot across the face of goal while substitute Chris Senior shot into the side netting on 73 minutes. A minute before the end, a blatant two-handed push by Hendon's Paul Towler on Senior went unpunished. | Jan 25th 2003 | Emley v Farsley Presidents Cup Bambrook double seals meeting with Kidsgrove On 32 minutes, Mark Wilson's pull-back from
the goalline was screwed high and wide by Michael Reynolds.Farsley were reduced to long- range efforts
but came close on 39 minutes when defender Matt Daly headed goalwards from
Matt Smithard's cross. Five minutes into the second half, a
Lincoln Adams knock-down was seized on by Bambrook, who was brought down
on the edge of the box by Chris Stabb. Bambrook dusted himself down to rifle home
the free-kick. Farsley nearly drew level moments later
when Steve Ball's cross just evaded former Town and Emley striker Michael
Midwood, who was racing in on goal. But Midwood didn't have long to wait to
make his mark. A minute later, as the home defence was
caught napping, Ben Jones teed up the striker to drill home from close
range.Wakefield and Emley's on-loan striker Andy
Evans made a hash of a one-on-one with Phil Straker, driving the ball
straight at the goalkeeper. Straker then pulled off a good save to deny
Bambrook. Manager Ronnie Glavin unleashed his
not-so-secret substitute weapon Chris Senior on 64 minutes and the pacy
former Town player was a constant threat.Celtic created a couple of good chances
during a 10-minute spell of pressure, which mainly came as a result of
Glavin's side slacking off.Smithard sliced narrowly wide on 64

| Jan 18th 2003 | Senior had scored his first goal for Emley
in the FA Trophy defeat of Burton, which followed a 1-0 home win over
Worksop. Former Barnsley striker Andy Evans, signed
on loan from rivals Frickley by Ronnie Glavin, made a solid debut and came
close on 17 minutes, drilling Mark Wilson's corner across a busy six-yard
box when a touch from anyone would surely have provided a goal. And on 34 minutes, the 27-year-old showed
strength and skill when Rob Tonks picked him out and in one move, he
brought the ball down but pulled his shot just wide. Burscough rarely posed a threat, but when
Bambrook lost the ball from Nicky Wood's throw-in in the 66th minute, John
Norman raced clear and beat two defenders, only for his shot to be cleared
at the far post by Ryan Crossley as Kris McHale hovered. Burscough player-manager and former Aston
Villa star Shaun Teale made a timely interception from a well-weighted
through ball by Miles Thorpe to Bambrook as Emley found another gear in
the final 20 minutes. At the other end, Wood coolly mopped up a
passing threat from McHale. Senior provided a sublime moment in the
82nd minute when he rescued a Steve Nicholson mis-kick which was going out
of play and unleashed a superb crossfield pass.It fell invitingly into Bambrook's path,
but he drove wide.Moments later Thorpe picked out Senior and
he unselfishly fed Evans at the far post, but goalkeeper Taylor blocked. Emley had penalty appeals waved away when
Burscough's Joe Taylor appealed to handle from Tonks' late shot, and in
stoppage time, a Lincoln Adams cross found Senior but he blasted over
after finding time and space. Emley v Burscough 1 - 0 Wakefield and Emley: Cuss, Nicholson,

| Jan 15 2003 | Maude
gets top post
Jan 15 2003 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner WAKEFIELD
and Emley director Peter Maude is the new chairman of the UniBond League. He
was elected to the position at the League's management committee meeting
this week. Maude,
64, an insurance broker from Penistone, succeeds Duncan Bayley who
resigned last month after taking over the reins from former chairman Ken
Marsden two years ago. Maude
takes over in the full-time paid post, at an interesting time for the
UniBond League after the Conference's attempts to expand by creating a
Conference Two or, if enough clubs apply, a Conference North and South. Emley
have expressed an interest and, if they joined, he would have to resign as
chairman. Maude
began his second spell on the management committee in 2001, having served
between 1992 and 1999 when he quit after the admission of then crisis-club
Barrow who were thrown out of the Conference for financial irregularities. Emley
were one of only six to vote against the admission of Barrow into the
UniBond League (Northern Premier League). Maude
said: "To be representing 45 clubs at this level of football is a
tremendous honour and a great responsibility.

| Jan 11th 2003 | Emley v Burton (FA Trophy 3rd Round) Super sub Senior is star as Glavin's men
claim prize scalp Clough's frustration was compounded two minutes from time when his side were reduced to 10 men by the sending off of striker Dale Anderson.Having already been booked for diving, he scythed down Ryan Crossley. While highly-rated Clough and his assistant Gary Crosby, the ex-Town player, were left to contemplate defeat, Ronnie Glavin, who continued to be linked with Town's Division II rivals Barnsley, reflected on another prize scalp, taken in front of an 801 crowd. "I thought it was a good overall team performance. We worked hard and closed them down quickly," he said."We set about them early on and carried it on throughout the match. Burton are a quality side, with quality players and you have to respect them for that but our boys at the back did a really good job." Senior had been introduced as a 68th-minute substitute, and Glavin explained: "You have to maximise the strength of players like Chris, and his strength is obviously his pace. "I feel it is best to use Chris after the game has opened up, then you see the best of him." Bambrook, industrious Danny Day - who is due to have knee surgery next month - and Lincoln Adams all squandered first-half chances. Emley also had strong claims for a penalty denied when Day was caught by Camp. Burton's only real chance fell to captain Neil Glasser on 72 minutes, but his shot flew over. | Jan 4 2003 | Glavin
linked with Barnsley!
Jan
4 2003 Wakefield
and Emley boss Ronnie Glavin has been linked with the manager's job at
cash-strapped Barnsley.
Rumours
are rife after the highly-respected Glavin - a former fans favourite when
he was a player at Barnsley - was seen sat alongside new owner and town
mayor Peter Doyle during Barnsley's 2-1 home defeat by Northampton on New
Year's Day. The
Glaswegian, who lives in Barnsley, joined the club for £40,000 in 1979-80
season and was top scorer with 23 goals. And
during the following campaign he top scored again, this time with 24 goals
as Barnsley clinched promotion to the old Division II. In
1982-83 he was the club's leading scorer again, this time with 21 and in
1984-85 joined Portuguese side Belenenses before rejoining Barnsley in
1985-86 on a non-contract basis. It
is not the first time the former Scottish international, who also played
for Partick and Celtic, has been linked with a move to a professional
club, Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley and Halifax have previously been
mentioned. Glaswegian
Glavin, who still lives in Barnsley, became Emley boss in November 1994
and two seasons later piloted the famous non-league club to a huge FA Cup
third round trip to Premiership giants West Ham where they just lost out
2-1 to a late goal. He
took Emley to the first round proper of the Cup again the following season
with Rotherham needing a replay to earn victory. In
2000-01 Glavin guided Emley, in their first season at Belle Vue, but they
were denied promotion, being pipped by one point by Stalybridge Celtic who
went up into the Nationwide Conference.

| Jan 3rd 2003 | Emley v
Worksop
Emley end a hoodoo Wakefield and Emley have finally broken
their UniBond League hoodoo to chalk up their first win in 10 Premier
Division outings. Even though they did not manage to put the
ball in the back of the net themselves, the relief on the players' faces
at the final whistle told its own story in a match watched by Burton boss
Nigel Clough who Emley host in the third round of the FA Trophy next
Saturday. Worksop defender Darren Bradshaw did the
honours for Emley with a stunning own goal on 23 minutes. Emley striker Simeon Bambrook drove a free
kick deep into the box and Bradshaw, who joined the Tigers after playing
at the highest level with Newcastle, Chesterfield, York, Peterborough and
Blackpool, met it with a supreme header which he drove backwards past the
despairing dive of goalkeeper David McCarthy. It could not have been sweeter! The match also marked the debut of former
Town reserve team striker Chris Senior, who was among four uncontracted
players released from the club this week. And he was soon in the thick of the action.Ten minutes after his introduction he set
about pressurising the Worksop defence and they could not match his pace
as he cut inside from the left, drifted across the edge of the box only to
see his final effort go inches wide moments before the break. Earlier defender Rudi Coleano missed a
header from close range from Steve Nicholson's deep probing ball and Mark
Wilson just failed to connect with Adams' pull-back in the six yard box as
Emley missed chances to establish a stronger lead at the break.
