Early goal gets better of Glavin Midfielder Mark Wilson almost
single-handedly took up Emley's cause against the Ellesmere Port side who
achieved FA Cup glory by beating QPR before succumbing to Macclesfield in
the Sky- televised second-round tie. Wilson was a constant thorn in the
Motormen's side but could do nothing to prevent them almost adding a
second when Cumiskey's strong drive inched just wide on five minutes.Emley regathered and a half chance by Miles
Thorpe provided an easy gather for stand-in goalkeeper Matty Hogg, while
Wilson's 30 yard shot on the half hour was always rising. Centre-back Paul David began to get a
measure of the game and showed strong defensive qualities to dominate in
the air.But for all their second half possession,
Emley lacked a cutting edge in front of goal.Striker Craig Gomersal's hesitation from a
Rob Tonks' through ball allowed two Motors players to close on him and on
58 minutes, Lee Ryan cut inside but shot just wide of the near post. Ryan turned provider for Danny Day on 62
minutes, but his teasing cross floated agonisingly over the head of the
striker, who was poised and ready to convert. Then David had a goalbound header cleared
off the line. A quality run by Vauxhall's Robbie Lawton
should have put the game beyond Emley's reach on 87 minutes. He dinked the ball past Ryan Crossley, then
outstripped him for pace - no mean feat - but as he floated across the
edge of the area after throwing David a dummy, his screaming shot flew
just wide. Result Vauxhall 1 Emley 0 Team: Cuss, Nicholson, Crossley, Wilson,

Emley v Frickley Athletic
Glavin
so desperate to drive his side out of rut
Dec 27 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Wakefield and Emley's bleak mid-winter continued with a goalless Boxing Day derby draw with Frickley. Ronnie Glavin's seventh-placed side have taken just one point from their last three UniBond League games - all against teams in the bottom half of the table - and haven't won in eight. And tomorrow they have a tough trip to third-placed Vauxhall Motors.
To make matters worse, Emley had a numerical advantage for an hour of yesterday's clash after the 29th-minute dismissal of defender Paul Marquis, who received a second yellow card after scything down pacy home winger Michael Reynolds.
The formbook often goes out of the window in derby games. But Emley created by far the better chances against the third-bottom South Elmsall side. The problem was in finishing them off.
Danny Day flashed a glancing header outrageously wide of the target on 37 minutes. Then a good crossfield move led to Rob Tonks blasting wide with target at his mercy. Soon after, Craig Gomersal's header was crucially cleared by Frickley skipper Anthony Jackson.
Unfortunately for the 360-strong crowd, the second half failed to raise any post-Christmas cheer.A deep cross by Steve Nicholson found Miles Thorpe, who picked out Nicky Wood, only for the centre-back's shot to cannon off the busy Jackson.
An exciting run by Frickley forward Curtis Bernard, a former Emley loan player, should have put the visitors in front. But after jinking away from a series of attempted tackles, Bernard sliced his shot wide.
Emley substitute Lee Ryan's solid downwards header was saved by Mark Samways on 66 minutes. Then, in stoppage time, Mark Wilson shot wide while Ryan fired straight at the goalkeeper.
Vauxhall Motors also drew 0-0, at Burscough, while leaders Accrington's game at Whitby was postponed. Stalybridge, who are second, won 1-0 at Hyde.

| Dec 26th 2002 | Emley v Frickley Frickley fun! Well,
what a way to spend Boxing Day! The match was generally poor with the odd
moment that was good. Why does Jelly continue to hang back when the
midfield are looking to thread balls through to him, surely he should be
breaking ahead of the full back into space (often acres yesterday)?
Admittedly yesterday he had the quality to make the cross still, but why
make it trickier for ourselves? Have the team bought the "100
Greatest Premiership goals" video as I am sure that yesterday instead
of trying to put the ball in the net from a scramble, we had constant
flicks and head backs which were twice as tricky as the shot. For all our
possession in and around the box, their keeper had very few saves to make.

Glavin left with big Boxing Day quest
Dec 23 2002 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Wakefield and Emley's spartan UniBond League run continued in Cheshire. Ronnie Glavin's men have now gone seven Premier Division games without a victory, and have slipped to seventh. That makes it vital they bounce back when Frickley visit Belle Vue on Boxing Day(12.00).
At the Autoquest Stadium on Saturday, a 25th-minute penalty by ex-Marine man Dave Gamble put the home side on their way.Player-manager Liam Watson doubled the lead seven minutes into the second half.
Ex-Stalybridge player Matty McNeil then took centre stage, scoring after 78 and 87 minutes. Miles Thorpe scored a last-gasp consolation for Wakefield and Emley, who were beaten 2-0 by Runcorn in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. Frickley slumped 3-2 at Ashton, who had former Town and Emley striker Rodney Rowe on the scoresheet. League leaders Accrington slumped 2-1 at Hucknall, for whom former Barnsley player Clint Marcelle notched the winner. Stanley had gone ahead through Paul Mullin before Danny Mayman levelled a minute before the break. Vauxhall Motors, who host Emley on Saturday, were 3-2 winners over Whitby. Result Runcorn 4 Emley 1

Emley lose to League strugglers
Wakefield and Emley were haunted by former striker Deiniol Graham who created a goal and got the winner as lowly Colwyn Bay beat Ronnie Glavin's side 3-2.Former Manchester United player Graham set up Carl Furlong on 23 minutes who turned smartly and drove the ball past goalkeeper Paul Cuss.Furlong then turned provider for John Stannard on 31 minutes when he tucked away a 16-yard low drive.
But Emley hit back when Simeon Bambrook converted a 47th minute penalty after a foul on midfielder Miles Thorpe. But eight minutes later, the North Wales outfit secured only their third UniBond League Premier Division win of the season when Marc Limbert and Stannard combined to tee up Graham who beat Cuss from just outside the area for his seventh goal of the season . Emley's Craig Gomersal pulled a goal back on 61 minutes but Glavin's side were denied by two superb saves from keeper Matthew Boswell to prevent them gaining an equaliser.

Frustration as Stanley withstand onslaught Dec 9 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Supporters will still be scratching their heads at how Wakefield & Emley failed to score and take maximum points from this one-sided encounter. But a point against the runaway UniBond League leaders at least moved Ronnie Glavin's side up to fourth in the Premier Division.
Emley played fluid attacking football and took the game to Accrington from the kick-off. Attacking midfielder Rob Tonks outlined his side's intentions on six minutes when he took one touch to control the ball before volleying just over the bar from 30 yards out. As Glavin's men camped out in Accrington's half, striker Craig Gomersal teed up Tonks, whose shot was headed clear by towering centre-back Jonathan Smith only as far as Danny Day.His shot, however, was fielded by supporters in the third tier of the hospitality stand at Belle Vue, where 452 watched the clash.
Leeds-based Accrington striker Lutel James found a rare yard of space on 26 minutes. But he pulled his shot well wide of the target as classy centre-backs Paul David and Nicky Wood kept the home defence solid.Their own side squandered a gilt-edged chance on the half hour when Lee Ryan punished a static Accrington defence to surge forward and square the ball to Bambrook, whose shot crashed off the foot of the post for Day who rifled the rebound over.
The same trio linked up on 41 minutes when Bambrook's shot was blocked and Ryan's follow-up cannoned off a defender before Day screwed it wide.
Accrington showed better application after the break, but former Emley winger Dean Calcutt did not cause a threat. On 60 minutes Stanley skipper Peter Cavangh found on-loan Morecambe player Andy Gouck, who gave goalkeeper Paul Cuss his first test of the day.He got down well to block while Steve Halford then drove the rebound wide.
Further chances fell to Bambrook, Gomersal and David, but hearts were in mouths on 76 minutes when Wood tangled with James in the area.Vehement penalty appeals by Stanley players were waved away.
With pressure mounting, the tackles flew in, and the frustration proved too much for Gomersal, who was shown a straight red card in the final minute for kicking the ball away as teammate Mark Wilson was cautioned.
Wakefield and Emley are back in UniBond League action on Saturday, when they visit second-bottom Colwyn Bay, who drew 2-2 with Gateshead.

Day's goal not enough Dec 5 2002 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Wakefield and Emley slipped to fifth place in the UniBond League after losing 2-1 at Blyth Spartans. Danny Day put them ahead just two minutes into last night's clash, which was watched by 291, but Blyth hit back after the break. Craig Perry pounced for the equaliser on 52 minutes, then Craig Myhill won the match on 60. Bambrook hat trick as Emley training pays big dividends Dec 2 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Striker Simeon Bambrook stole the show as Emley went goal crazy against clueless Spalding. Manager Ronnie Glavin said that in midweek training, a lot of work had been done in retaining the ball longer and bringing Bambrook more into the frame - and it showed.
Bambrook notched his first hat trick of the season as Emley ditched their poor scoring record of not having scored more than two in any game - and went nap. It could easily have been 10!
Exceptional movement and creativity in the final third brought about this result in front of 230 spectators, which Emley must use as a springboard into next week's UniBond League matches at Blyth (Wednesday) before the cracking home tie against leaders Accrington on Saturday.
It took just eight minutes for Bambrook to open his account when captain Steve Nicholson, who supplied great ammunition all match, sent a cross in from the right and Bambrook wrestled between two defenders before hitting a left foot shot which cannoned in off the post.Craig Gomersal made it two-nil on 16 blasting into the roof of the net as the challenges slid in. But Danny Day, whose workrate was immense, missed a great chance on 36 when he made a complete hash of a header when unmarked.
The only thing Spalding, of the Dr Martens Eastern Division (equivalent to the UniBond First), created were bookings, including one to defender Alex Irvine who also doubles up as the club's chairman.
He was substituted soon after the break by manager and ex-Everton player Alan Biley! Emley were relentless and impressive.
Despite the lower standard of their opponents, this was a determined, focused and spirited performance which will hopefully ignite a real title charge.
Paul David swatted off Spalding's young forwards like flies while his fellow centre-back Nicky Wood was pushed into midfield in the absence of Miles Thorpe (thigh) and Mark Wilson (hamstring).
Goalkeeper Paul Cuss must have had the easiest game of his Emley career when the closest Spalding came to a shot was a half-hearted strike from Jamie Lawrence which he pulled well wide of the far post on 82 minutes!
A glancing header from Lee Ryan made it four on 70 minutes and Bambrook bagged his third and Emley's fifth will a class finish on 83.

Unbeaten run ends with missed penalty Nov 25 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Emley's unbeaten UniBond League run was wrecked in a tale of two penalties. While on-loan Droylsden striker David Cameron made no mistake with his spot kick, Simeon Bambrook failed the 12-yard test as manager Ronnie Glavin's hopes of going 10 games without defeat were ruined.
The game's only goal came after 20 minutes when tricky forward Jimmy Haarhoff was judged to have been upended by Nicky Wood in the corner of the area.Cameron - making his home debut on loan from Conference club Chester in front of a crowd of 261 - duly drove home.
The visitors had received a warning of home intent when Darren Wright teed up Haarhoff, whose shot flew narrowly over, and Paul Cuss saved a Ged Murphy header soon after.
On a pitch more suited to potato growing than passing football, Wakefield and Emley struggled for fluency. And when Craig Gomersal found a yard of space in the boggy penalty box, he was denied by a clean tackle from Droylsden captain Garry Wright.
The Manchester side, nicknamed The Bloods, might have seen claret spilt on the pitch had Emley centre-back Paul David not kept his cool when Haarhoff tried to con the referee for a second penalty on the half hour. His dive, which failed to bring a caution, incensed the defender.
Glavin's men worked hard in a bid to get back into contention. But a lack of movement up front - too many players persistently dropped deep - was in contrast to Droylsden's imaginative running.Emley should have levelled on 37 minutes when Chris O'Brien was adjudged to have handled in the area as he paid close attention to Gomersal. But Bambrook, who has netted four times from the spot this season, blasted the ball against the angle of post and bar and give Droylsden a mighty let-off.
David Pace's side tried to extend their lead after the break, creating a good 64th-minute chance for Haarhoff, which Cuss blocked with his feet. But Glavin's side also had their chances, the best on 73 minutes when David sent Bambrook racing clear, only for the striker's left-foot shot to scream wide.

Gateshead's early blitz ends bid Nov 21 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Just 17 minutes and three conceded goals into Wakefield and Emley's first UniBond League Cup tie of the season and it was all over.Barely had the pie and peas been warmed through when Emley went a goal behind to David Colvin, who buried a super cross from former Sunderland winger Steven Harrison after just six minutes.
Emley, who had done the League double over the visitors, had already survived a shot against the bar.And the North-East blitz continued as Dickinson added a second after 12 minutes and Nicky Wood headed an own goal after 17, leaving Ronnie Glavin's side with a mountain to climb.
Having failed to score three in a game all season, it was unlikely Emley would salvage this one.And they had only substitute Lee Ryan's last minute diving header from Ryan Crossley's cross as consolation, leaving home fans in a 108 crowd to contemplate a first defeat in 10 matches.
Defeat in this second-round tie (Glavin's side had a bye in the first) means Wakefield and Emley now go into the UniBond President's Cup. On Saturday, it's a trip to Droylsden for a first League meeting between the clubs this season.

Secretary Poulain back after dramatic U-turn
Nov 15 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner Richard Poulain has made a dramatic U-turn on his decision to resign as secretary of Wakefield and Emley. After
discussions with the UniBond League club's chairman Peter Matthews, Poulain
admitted he had been a little hasty. But
during a lengthy meeting with Matthews, Poulain decided his future was with
the club he has served for seven years, and he will be back on duty
tomorrow, when Lancaster visit Belle Vue (3.00) Matthews said: "Richard has been through a sticky patch and has been trying to do too much. "His wife Christine suffers from multiple sclerosis, his workload has increased immensely, he has been helping out behind the social club bar after the redundancy of the club steward, and he has also been working part-time for his previous employers Stotts coaches." He added: "Richard was hoping to work full-time for the club and for a trial period he was trying to do both jobs at once. "But the strain and workload proved too much, therefore causing his hasty resignation." On
the pitch, Ronnie Glavin's side aim to return to winning ways after
successive 1-1 draws at Barrow last Saturday and at home to Hyde on Tuesday,
when Simeon Bambrook netted his seventh goal of the term. Emley
are third, while Lancaster, who impressed in beating Town 3-1 in a
pre-season friendly at their Giant Axe ground, are 10th. |

Business as usual - Knowles
Nov 14 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner Wakefield
and Emley officials were today still reeling after the shock resignation of
club secretary Richard Poulain. But
defiant chief executive Rick Knowles insists the ambitious UniBond League
outfit won't be rushed into appointing a successor and insisted: "It's
business as usual." Even
so, Poulain's decision will have come as a big blow to the Belle Vue-based
club, who are eager to win promotion to the Conference. The
former Football League referee had been in the key role for seven years
after succeeding the long-serving Gordon Adamson. And
earlier this season, the club took the major step of making the job
full-time. Knowles
said: "At the moment Richard is completely uncontactable. "We
are still unsure of our long-term plans because, to be honest, we don't know
what the short-term plans are. "But
no club should be reliant on one person. We have to carry on as normal and
we will clearly do so." Poulain,
who lives at Skelmanthorpe, is severing all ties with the club to spend more
time with wife Christine, who suffers from multiple sclerosis. He
will return to his former job as a coach driver for Stotts. In
addition to numerous hours he put in dealing with paperwork, Poulain was
stadium announcer and had taken over as steward at the Welfare Ground social
club in Emley, where the club played before moving to Wakefield. He
also drove the team coach to away fixtures, most recently to Cumbria for
Saturday's 1-1 draw with Barrow. trained
referee to make the Football League list in more than 40 years in 1991. Born
and brought up in Dagenham, Essex, he took up refereeing seriously after
moving to Huddersfield in 1974 and made a steady rise through the football
pyramid, becoming a League linesman in 1986. In
1997 he made League history by becoming the first referee to send off five
players in one match - the Second Division fixture between Chesterfield and
Plymouth at Saltergate. The
highlight of his refereeing career was being named fourth official at the
Coca-Cola Cup final of 1997 between Middlesbrough and Leicester. His
last game in the middle was at Stoke (their final match at the old Victoria
Ground) at the end of that season, when Poulain had reached 48, the maximum
age for referees.

Poulain
in shock resignation!
Nov 13 2002 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner STALWART
Emley secretary Richard Poulain has resigned from the club. Former
Football League referee Mr Poulain has been in the job for seven years, and
just weeks ago was installed full time at the Wakefield-based UniBond League
Premier Division club. "Due
to the ever-increasing pressures of the job and the demands being made, I
feel the time has now come where I need to cut all ties with the club and
concentrate on being a full-time husband and carer for my wife
Christine," he said.

| Nov 12th 2002 | Emley v Hyde United Emley hit back after Wood slip
On 34 minutes a harmless back pass by Paul
David to centre back colleague Wood should have been bread and butter for
the normally rock steady defender, but he slipped and allowed former
Blackburn Rovers player Steve Foster to pounce and slot the ball past
goalkeeper Paul Cuss. The Belle Vue crowd had to wait until the
51st minute for something to cheer with a penalty equaliser from Simeon
Bambrook. He had gone down under an inocuous challenge by Larry Farren but
got up to drive the spot kick home down the centre.Just moments before, Emley had avoided
going two down when Wood skied an attempted header to Cuss and Foster got
to it first only to screw the shot harmlessly wide. After former Town striker Rodney Rowe's
release from the club, pressure was on Emley strikers Danny Day and
Bambrook to deliver but, despite some dangerous Bambrook breaks, they
couldn't force what would have been a valuable win.Midfielder Miles Thorpe - who later needed
stitches in a head wound - put a header straight at keeper Peter Crookes,
who looked shaky when dealing with a Rob Tonks effort at the second
attempt. Hyde skipper Dominic Crookes - part of
Stalybridge's promotion-winning squad - blocked a Bambrook left-foot
strike, while Dave Swanick also made a last-ditch block to deny the
seven-goal striker. Tonks' header forced a good save on 69

forget, the visitors had carved out chances, with Rob Tonks pulling a shot
wide after only two minutes. Day, meanwhile, squandered two
opportunities to put his side ahead in the first half.Paul Cuss made a superb save from Steve
Housham's diving header on 36 minutes. But the former Town goalkeeper couldn't

Housham's fierce shot cannoned off the underside of the bar .After Ryan's equaliser,

Day heads a cracker! Nov 6 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Danny Day rose through the bonfire smog that drifted over Belle Vue to power home a cracking header a minute from time and earn a ninth UniBond League victory that lifted Emley to third in the table.
Whitby boss Harry Dunn was none too pleased to see his side fall to the late winner, yet conceded: "It was a great cross, very difficult to defend against, and a great header. "Everyone thought the match had goalless written all over it, and I thought we controlled the game very well."Our forwards were disappointing. They did not create the openings they have done in the past and we have got to learn to play out matches sometimes. We did not do that and were punished."
Emley, who face Swinton Athletic in the first round of the Sheffield Senior Cup at the Welfare Ground tonight (7.45), took a while to settle into the contest with some confusion in the forward ranks.
Lee Ryan, in for injured Craig Gomersall (hamstring) started up front, alongside Rodney Rowe, while leading forward Simeon Bambrook sat in behind - but was frequently caught running back too deep causing Day, in midfield, to query his role.
Whitby's Thomas Reid was industrious down the right and had a good game against Ryan Crossley, who was one of Emley's better players on the night. But while Air Bomb fireworks constantly exploded overhead, there was little explosive action in front of goal. Former Pickering Town player, Steffan Zoll, was a useful outlet for Whitby, but centrebacks Paul David and Rudi Coleano stood firm.
Day was denied on 31 minutes when his downward header from Bambrook's cross was hacked off the line by Alex Gildea, but too often strikers Lee Ryan and Rodney Rowe were indecisive up front. Good moves broke down when they failed to have a crack themselves and were easily smothered by the hard-working Whitby side.
Bambrook launched a left foot exocet which screamed just wide on 64 minutes while Ryan's volley from 25 yards soon after was straight down goalkeeper David Campbell's throat.
Former Middlesbrough youth player Aaron Wilford squandered a rare chance on 69 minutes, powering a header wide under Crossley's challenge and he injured himself in the process. Paul Cuss made his only fumble of the game when the ball squirmed clear at the near post as Gildea stuck out a foot, but he recovered to smother the chance.

Linzi was back reporting on Emley at Staybridge on Saturday. Emley share spoils Nov 4 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner Former Lancaster City duo Colin Potts and Kenny Mayers linked well on nine minutes but Potts' cross just evaded the incoming Mayers. And soon after inventive Potts rammed his header straight at goalkeeper Paul Cuss who stood strong, as Stalybridge marked out their intentions. Only Simeon Bambrook provided a remote hope for Emley but his two half chances in the first period did not trouble keeper Craig Dootson. Rudi Coleano made a great clearance off the line from Jerome Fitzgerald's header while David German's shot glanced just wide followed by a Potts' long range effort that screamed two feet off target as Stalybridge turned the screw. Surprisingly Emley could have taken a half-time lead when Ryan Crossley's left wing cross was met by Danny Day, his header beating Dootson all ends up, only for it to cannon back off the woodwork. Coleano made his second clearance off the line on 54 minutes from Eastwood's header but soon after striker Craig Gomersall pulled up with a hamstring problem and was replaced by Michael Reynolds. Cuss was forced into heroics when a dipping long-range attempt by Eastwood appeared goalbound but Cuss clawed it back as the ball began its descent then recovered quickly to smother the danger.Mark Wilson, in his third spell back at Emley, hit a shot on the turn as the two centrebacks bore down but he struck it almost too well and straight down Dootson's throat. Midfielder Miles Thorpe was enjoying a ding-dong battle with his opposite number, skipper Kevin Parr, but on 82 minutes he produced a match-winning tackle in his own area when Danny Hooper was put through and Thorpe's perfectly executed challenge denied the striker a one-on-one with Cuss. Tonks is the goal hero Oct 28 2002 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Wakefield and Emley won 1-0 at Altrincham to chalk up their second double of the UniBond League campaign and go third in the Premier Division table. And Ronnie Glavin's side are now only six points adrift of Accrington Stanley after the leaders went down to first defeat of the season, 2-1 at Frickley. At Moss Lane, Rob Tonks got the crucial goal after 58 minutes, drilling home a low shot from the edge of the area. Ryan Crossley and Mark Wilson had already missed chances while skipper Steve Nicholson was influential as Glavin's hard- working side produced a lively display in front of a 602 crowd. Worksop are second in the standings after their 4-1 home win over Droylsden. Former Storthes Hall striker Jamie Miller netted twice as Gerry Quinn's Ashton United went sixth with a 3-1 win over Gateshead.

Emley let a lead slip and stay seventh Oct
16 2002 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner Craig Gomersal, playing against his old
club, and Mark Wilson put Ronnie Glavin's side in command with goals on
six and eight minutes respectively. Playing with the wind at their backs in the
second half, however, Ashton equalised through former Storthes Hall
striker Jamie Miller (60 mins) and Lee Calvert two minutes later. It was reward for Ashton's former Emley
manager Gerry Quinn and the home contingent in a crowd of 185, while Emley
remain seventh in the UniBond Premier Division as they prepare to tackle
Bradford Park Avenue at Belle Vue on Saturday (3.00). Gomersal will be under treatment for that
match having gone off injured at half time last night. At least we avoided a reverse of last years
result when Ashton were 2 - 0 up at 1/2 time but we came back to win 3 -
2. Their first goal was unfortunate. Cuss
saved the shot but seemed to push it back into the net. Made up for it
later with a fantastic save; a shot was dropping under the bar but Cuss
lept backward to push it over. Result Ashton 2 Emley 2 Team: Cuss, Nicholson, Crossley, Colleano,

| Oct 8th 2003 | Emley win and move fourth Danny Day added the second on 81 minutes, beginning and ending a flowing move when his pass wide right to Steve Nicholson was perfectly executed for him to power past goalkeeper David Campbell. Gareth McAlindon pulled a goal back for Gateshead on 85 minutes when Wilson and Lincoln Adams went for the same ball in the box and it spun out invitingly for the former Newcastle and Carlisle striker to let rip.But it proved scant consolation for the Tynesiders, in front of 271 spectators, who lost former boss Gary Gill and assistant Steve Agnew last week. They resigned after failing to agree budget cuts. Replacement Colin Richardson was an animated figure on the touchline but he couldn't prevent Glavin's side notching their first League double of the season after the 1-0 win in their second League outing up north. Mark Wilson, back for his third spell at the club after leaving Belper Town, was his usual effervescent self and created a few chances for striker Craig Gomersall, making his second appearance since signing from Northern Counties East League side Liversedge. Emley's victory could have been more decisive had former Town striker Rodney Rowe shown a more clinical edge and Nicky Wood's free header just before the break not sailed over.At times Emley looked nervy at the back as centre-half Paul David began the first of a three match ban after his dismissal against Blyth, but they can tighten up in the next match at Ashton on Tuesday. string of teasing crosses, and driving a fierce shot just wide. Late

Fans can air views on
new club title
Sep 12 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner NEWLY
named Wakefield and Emley are considering another change of title. And
fans of the nationally renowned non-League club are to be asked for their
views. Having
expanded their original title to reflect their new base at Belle Vue, the
former village club are finding their title regularly abbreviated simply to
Wakefield. Now
club directors anxious to ensure the UniBond League club's original title
remains intact are willing to listen to suggestions for a name which pleases
all and which could be introduced for 2003-04. All
entries will be put into a hat and the first one drawn - whether the name is
adopted or not - will have the choice of a season ticket or a new away
strip. The
Wakefield and Emley board have been shocked by the reaction of supporters to
the new name, which must remain in place for the whole of this season. And
they admit they didn't appreciate the implications of the abbreviation
scenario. Chairman
Peter Matthews said: "At a recent shareholders' meeting, we realised
the degree of unhappiness over the change. "Most
people appreciate the chance for commerical opportunities arising from the
inclusion of Wakefield within the name, but many are not happy to see it cut
down to just that. "It
cost the Royal Mail millions of pounds when they experimented with the `Consignia'
title. Fortunately for us it's only cost us a fiver!" Matthews
added: "I will hold my hands up and say we may have made a mistake and
I'm as disappointed as anyone to see the abbreviation on Ceefax and Teletext
and in many newspapers. "While
discussions were under way in the summer we went with the general concensus
that Wakefield has a quarter of a million population, while Emley has 2,000,
and that was the criteria we used to establish the name. "A
lot of people seemed to fear that this was a way of going down the road to
dropping the Emley name altogether, but that honestly wasn't the way we were
thinking. "Now,
while we have some breathing space before the start of next season, we are
willing to look at it again if that's what people want." New-name
suggestions should be written on a postcard and sent to: Emley Name
Competition, The Welfare Ground, Upper Lane, Emley, Huddersfield HD8 9RE, to
arrive by September 30. *
Wakefield and Emley are next in UniBond League action against Stalybridge at
Belle Vue on Saturday (3.00).

Bambrook is on the mark to fire latest success Sep 11 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner DANNY
DAY and Simeon Bambrook were on target as Wakefield & Emley notched
their first home win of the season. It
was a fifth succes in as many meetings since the Cheshire side came back
down to the UniBond from the Conference in 2000. And
last night's win, achieved in front of 318 spectators, lifted Ronnie
Glavin's side to fifth. Day
scored his first goal of the campaign after 22 minutes. Steve
Smith created the chance with a determined run down the left wing. Neil
Murphy's clearance fell to Day, and while his first shot was charged down,
he confidently lifted the rebound over goalkeeper Andy Moore. Former
Hyde captain Peter Band levelled for Altrincham after 39 minutes, reacting
first to hesitation inside the area to drive a shot inside the far post. Jason
Gallagher fluffed a great chance to put Bernard Taylor's side ahead,
blasting wide just after the restart, before Rob Tonks sent Bambrook racing
clear to drive home the winner 57 minutes. The strike was the talented Bambrook's second in as many games as he returns to action after groin surgery. Result Emley 2 Altrincham. 1

Wilson strike a winner Aug 22 2002 By Linzi Nicholson, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner Meltham-based
midfielder Andy Wilson popped up with a precious last-minute strike to earn
Ronnie Glavin's renamed Wakefield & Emley a 1-0 win at Gateshead last
night. In
a match ruined by pedantic refereeing, Wilson's strike was the highlight. A
throw-in by Steve Nicholson picked out Danny Day, and his short ball to Lee
Ryan was fed through to Miles Thorpe, who spotted Wilson with his back to
goal. In
one movement, Wilson turned and cracked a great strike into the top corner. Despite
both sides having four cautions, Emley had most of the play, working hard to
close Gateshead down. Gateshead went close on 45 minutes when Nicky Mohan's header cannoned off the bar from a corner. Former League player Steve Agnew went on midway through the second half for the home side.

Emley v Marine by Richard Poulain In sweltering conditions both sides struggled to find any early dominance over the other. However, it was the home side who settled down first with the industrious Tonks linking defence with attack to set up Ryan with a chance which was saved by Stewart. Marine had there first serious attempt in the 20th minute which ended in a corner. The resulting corner from Bailey was cleared and Wakefield & Emley surged into the visitors half. Tonks found debutant Rowe whose shot flew into the corner of the net with Stewart stranded. During the half time interval both sides made changes. Adams for the injured Rowe and Black and Morgan replacing Mullin and Taylor for Marine. The changes had an almost immediate effect for the visitors. On 49 minutes Bailey latched onto a pass and lobbed the advancing Cuss who could only watch as Crossley tried in vain to stop the ball crossing the line. Marine kept up the pressure and had shots from M |
