Emley v Blyth Spartans

Emley got back to winning ways with a somewhat unconvincing win versus Blyth Spartans.  With Simeon Bambrook moving back to Garforth Town due to family and work commitments, Emley put out a makeshift front line.  Paul David was suspended so Thompson was moved up front with Thorpe and youngster Wainman came into the side.  Nicky Wood filled in in central defence.

It was a good piece of work by Wainman that brought the first goal, he broke through the Blyth defence and fired against the bar only for Hurst to follow up and net the rebound.  Blyth hit back and equalised however and seemed to have the upper hand, but before half time things looked better for Emley when Blyth lost their left-back for a second bookable offence.  He had been booked for kicking the ball away and then fouled Wainman to earn his second card, he didn't go quietly and left his team with a problem.

However Blyth started the second half as if they had the extra man, pinning Emley back, but failing to capitalise on their chances.  Rhodes pulled off some impressive saves in the Emley goal to keep them in the game.

Finally Emley made their extra man count.  Wood started a move which then involved Hurst, he returned the ball to Wood who made no mistake to give Emley the points.

Result: Emley 2 - 1 Blyth Spartans

Emley's match versus Frickley at the Welfare ground has been moved forward to the 11th January from the 18th.  This is to leave the 18th free either for a Trophy replay if needed, or a Unibond League Cup 3rd round tie (v Alfreton) if we get through the 2nd Round!

  Dec 19th 1998

Emley v Leigh RMI

Emley fell to their second defeat in succession to a solid Leigh RMI side.  Emley struggled in the first half, but started the second half much the better side.   Unfortunately they could not turn their superiority into goals and Leigh came back to score 2 goals which Emley could not come back from.  Emley are still only seven points from the top of the Unibond League, despite having fallen to eleventh place.   This shows just how competitive the league is this season as most teams seem capable of beating any other team on their day.

Better news for former Emley man Glynn Hurst as he scored a hat-trick for Ayr United as they completed a 5-0 victory over Hamilton in the Scottish First Division.

Result: Emley 0 - 2 Leigh RMI

  Dec 12th 1998

Gateshead v Emley

A goal two minutes from time robbed Emley of a deserved point.  The Emley equaliser which was claimed by Thorpe looked to have earned them a draw against a side currently on form. But they could not hold out and failed to take advantage of the teams above them also dropping points.

Result: Gateshead 2 - 1 Emley

Emley Crash Six Past Maltby

Emley v Maltby (Sheffield Cup 3rd Rd)

Emley moved easily into the quarter final of the Sheffield Senior Challenge Cup when they brushed aside the challenge from Sheffield County senior side NCB Maltby  6 - 0 at the Welfare ground.

Goals in the first period from Wainman, Bradley 2, & Thorpe put the home side well in command. Further goals from Wainman and Fearon in the second sealed an easy win for the UniBond side in front of 115 hardy souls.

Result: Emley 6 - 0 Maltby

REYNOLDS MOVES TO AYR UNITED

Michael (Jelly) Reynolds has followed Glyn Hurst to Scottish first division side Ayr United for a reported £60,000 fee. Terms were agreed late on Tuesday (8/12) evening and Reynolds flies to Scotland on Thursday to sign forms which will make him the most expensive departure from Emley following Hurst's departure to the same club last season for £30,000.

'Jelly' has improved enormously as a player over the last two years and he stood out in the cup matches against Rotherham as a player who could make an impact in the professional game.  His pace, skill, strength and effort have made him a favourite at Emley and he will be greatly missed.  All at the club will wish him well in his move to Ayr.

Emley have other prospects for the wingers role already at the club.  Dean Calcutt has the potential to be as good as Reynolds if he can apply himself, and teenager Steve Smith has already shown great potential in the position.  Hopefully one, or both of these players will come through over the next season or two.

  Dec 5th 1998

Emley v Spennymoor United

Simeon Bambrook 7th goal in 7 games and his 12th of the season clinched the points for Emley in this dour battle.  Emley never reached the heights they are capable of against a side struggling for Unibond points.  The goal came after a penalty was awarded for a foul on Reynolds.  Banks' effort was saved but Bambrook followed up to slot home from a seemingly impossible angle.

Result: Emley 1 - 0 Spennymoor United

Emley's 3rd Round Sheffield Cup tie against Maltby will be played this Wednesday 9th December, at the Welfare Ground.  Kick-off is 7:30.

  Dec 5th 1998

Emley have rejected a £25000 bid for winger Michael Reynolds.  Rotherham manager Ronnie Moore made the bid after Reynolds impressed in the recent FA Cup matches between the clubs.  Ronnie Glavin has also blocked moves by Leeds United and Chesterfield to take the player on loan.  Ronnie feels that the clubs should back their judgement and make a sensible offer for the player.

Though the club would not want to stand in his way should Reynolds want to move into the professional game, the deal has to be right for both him and the club.

  Nov 30th 1998

Emley v Hucknall Town

Emley had to come from behind twice to force a draw with First Division Hucknall Town in this Unibond League Cup at the Welfare Ground.

Wilson got the first equaliser and Bambrook hit an unstoppable free-kick to get the second.  Fearon and Jones could both have pinched a win for Emley towards the end, but they now face an uncomfortable trip to the Midlands for the replay on a date to be announced.

Result: Emley 2 - 2 Hucknall Town

  Nov 28th 1998

Hyde United v Emley

Emley bounced back from the disappointment of the FA Cup defeat, but they left it late to beat a mediocre Hyde side.

Miles Thorpe was reinstated for Emley and Dean Calcutt was given a start as Robert Tonks was still suffering from the hamstring injury which he picked up in midweek.  The game started slowly and rarely gained much momentum throughout the afternoon.   Hyde competed strongly for the ball, showing why they have the best defensive record in the league by denying Emley the time or room to play in.  However Hyde didn't seem to have the attacking flair they usually show and they rarely troubled Rhodes.

Emley made by far the best chances of the first half.  They always looked dangerous from corners where Lacey and Dean Fearon, on loan from Ilkeston to cover for the injured Thompson, presented the greatest danger.  The best of these saw Lacey glance a header wide, unfortunately taking the chance away from Fearon who was better placed.   Bambrook was excellent again, his strength and skills always presenting a threat.   He had an excellent volley, from a long ball by Jones, saved by Scargill in the Hyde goal in the best effort of the half.

The second half saw Emley struggle to break down the Hyde defence.  Reynolds tried hard but could not break through.  Taylor in particular at the back was excellent.   Lacey again had a header just wide from a corner.  Smith came on for the ineffective Calcutt and his runs down the left gave Emley a new dimension.  At the other end, Hyde only occasionally presented any threat to the solid Emley defence.

Just when it looked like a stalemate Reynolds produced the magic to break the deadlock in the 89th minute.  He made a sparkling run to the by-line, taking on most of the Hyde defenders and put an excellent cross just out of reach of Scargill.  Thorpe could not get his head to it, but Smith was there to smash the ball home.  This was particularly sweet for Reynolds as he had been getting some barracking from a group of Hyde fans, who were now strangely silent.

Result: Hyde United 0 - 1 Emley

Team:  Rhodes, Wood, Jones, Lacey, Fearon, David, Calcutt (Smith), Hurst (Wilson), Thorpe, Bambrook, Reynolds.  Sub not used: Thompson.

Frustration as Emley Crash Out

Rotherham United v Emley

Emley were sent crashing out of the FA Cup by two late goals in the FA Cup 1st Round Replay.  To add to the disappointment Mark Wilson and Simon Jones were sent off when their frustration got the better of them in the dying minutes.

It had all started so brightly.  Straight from the kick-off Wilson won a free kick in midfield.  Jones put a long ball to the far post for Hurst to head back to the far post. There Bambrook headed home to score his fifth goal in four matches.

As the Emley fans celebrated however the goal galvanised Rotherham into action and they came back with a vengeance.  In a twenty minute spell during which the Emley goal was like the Alamo, Richardson headed wide when it seemed easier to score.  Roscoe smashed a free-kick against the bar, Jones cleared off the line and Sedgwick just failed to connect with a hard low cross.  Just when it seemed Emley had weathered the storm, Wood gave an unnecessary corner away in the absence of a shout from his team-mates. From this Sedgwick glanced the ball on for Glover to tap home.

Rotherham now relaxed and Emley were able to leave their own half for the first time since the beginning of the match.  The excellent as usual Reynolds squirmed his way through the defence only to have his shot blocked,  Hurst then headed just over and as half-time approached Reynolds broke clear only to see his shot go agonisingly wide.   The first half ended with the game nicely poised.

The second half was much calmer.  The teams were wary of each other and Emley defended well in midfield, with Wilson covering every blade of grass and Hurst and David blocking the central route to goal, Rotherham tried to attack down the wings where they were thwarted by Jones and Wood.  Thompson and Lacey provided the back-up whenever the front line was breached.

Up-front Bambrook worked tirelessly to try and pick up the long balls that occassionally came to him, but the main threat came from the runs of Reynolds.  As in the first match he got little protection from the uneven refereeing of Mr Laws.   Indeed the Whitley Bay referee was more intent on punishing every indiscretion Emley made with a yellow card rather than trying to protect Reynolds as Rotherham took turns to bring him down.  The final irony came when Reynolds was booked for an innocuous push midway through the second half.

Meanwhile Tonks, who had had an excellent game raiding down the right wing was substituted by Calcutt and the game seemed to be heading for Extra Time.  The introduction of Monkhouse for the ineffectual Roscoe after 70 minutes gave Rotherham the extra dimension they needed.  As Emley tired they made more mistakes and it was from one of these that Paul Hurst fired an unstoppable shot just inside the post with eight minutes remaining.  Jones got a booking for petulantly kicking the ball out of the ground.  Soon after Wilson was dismissed for aiming a punch at Glover.

Rotherham then finished Emley off with another fine strike from Garner.  The game lost, Jones ventured up field, was fouled, and in his frustration told the referee what he thought of him as, yet again, the Rotherham perpetrator got away with it.  He was sent off for his pains to leave a sour taste to an otherwise brave and impressive performance from Emley.

Despite Emley's grievances against the referee and Rotherham's cynical tactics in stopping Reynolds, the Millers deserved their victory.  Their neat passing game kept Emley on the back-foot for long periods and in the end their finishing was clinical.   It was a brave effort from Emley and the two sendings off were the result of frustration rather than any great malice, in what was a competitive, rather than a nasty game.

Result: Rotherham United 3 - 1 Emley

Team: Rhodes, Wood, Jones, Thompson, Lacey, David, Wilson, Hurst, Bambrook, Tonks (Calcutt), Reynolds. Subs not used: Smith, Hutson, Thorpe, Bray.

Emley will play Shepshed in the third round of the FA Trophy, as they won their replay 2-0 against Gretna.

  Nov 23rd 1998

Emley will have a long trip in the third round of the FA Trophy.  They will either have to go North to Scotland to face Gretna, or South to Leicestershire to face old rivals Shepshed Dynamo.  The pair drew their second round game on Saturday.

Emley have never played Gretna, who play in the Unibond League First Division, but met Shepshed several times in the early days of the Northern Counties East League.   Shepshed were a good side then whilst sponsored by Charterhouse, winning the inaugural Northern Counties East Championship.  They then fell on hard times but are now on their way back playing in the Dr. Martens Southern League Midland Division.

The match will be played on January 16th.

Emley's Unibond League Cup 2nd Round match has been re-arranged to Monday 30th November at the Welfare Ground.  Kick-off 7:30.

Cup Injury Worries

Emley have several injury worries for the FA Cup Replay on Tuesday at Rotherham.   Central defence pairing Neil Lacey (Pulled Muscle) and Michael Thompson (Back Injury) are the major concerns, but also Michael Reynolds has been suffering with the Flu and was on the subs bench for the FA Trophy match on Saturday.

Ian Banks will definitely miss the match as he is suspended.  This is a blow for the ex-Rotherham man and for Emley who will miss the quality he provides in midfield.   However Mark Wilson, back from a long injury, may well be the one to take advantage of Banks' misfortune.  He too has Rotherham links as he spent two years at Millmoor as an apprentice.  As a junior Wilson led Rotherham to a two-leg final victory in the Northern Intermediate League Cup against a Newcastle United side including the likes of Steve Howey, Lee Clark and Steve Watson.

He had the honour of lifting the trophy at St James's Park and remembered: "It was a fantastic feeling. We'd drawn 1-1 in the first leg at Millmoor, but in the second leg we won 3-1, and Newcastle had a very good side at the time.''

That was back in the 1989-90 season and Rotherham's junior coach at the time was John Breckin, who is now Ronnie Moore's assistant.

"I've still got an awful lot of respect for John Breckin, but I hope it's our night on Tuesday and not his.'' he added. "If I'm involved on Tuesday it really will be a dream come true, going back and playing against the club where I started off, especially after having such a bad injury for most of the season."

"I've still got a lot of friends among the lads at Millmoor and Rotherham always make me very welcome when I go back. I had some very good times there.''

Emley v Whitley Bay

BAMBROOK STRIKE SEALS VICTORY

Simeon Bambrook stole the limelight once again as Emley stuttered into the 3rd Round of the FA Umbro trophy at the expense of UniBond 1st division side Whitley Bay.

Bambrook's cool strike in the 70th minute was really the only highlight of a dour contest which saw both Michael Reynolds and Paul David rested before Tuesday's FA Cup replay at Rotherham United.

Whitley Bay belied their lowly position in the league with a display which put pressure on many of the Emley players by seemingly always being first to the tackle and the ball. However, "Bay" could not convert this into chances and Rhodes in the home goal barely had a save to make in either half.

In the second half with an unwanted replay looking the likely result Manager Ronnie Glavin introduced Reynolds and immediately the game changed. With his extra pace Reynolds carved out the chances which eventually created the only
goal of the game. He won the ball on the left and swung the ball across to the right where Bambrook facing away from goal and on the edge of the box turned and hit a shot which the Bay keeper just stood and watched as the ball flew into the top corner of his net.

The relief on the players and crowd was evident to see but Emley will have to raise their game by a lot more if they are to overcome Rotherham on Tuesday.

Result: Emley 1 - 0 Whitley Bay

Parkgate v Emley

Rampant Emley Triumph

Hot shot Simeon Bambrook led the way as Emley demolished Parkgate in the Sheffield Senior Cup replay at frozen Roundwood.

The man whose goal took Rotherham to the wire on Sunday in the FA Cup was twice on the mark as Ronnie Glavin's men triumphed in the freezing conditions as Rawmarsh. Bambrook's driven free kick in the 12th minute was too hot for the home keeper to hold and skipper for the night Neil Lacey was on hand for a close range opener he could hardly miss.

Bambrook himself scored the second after 34 minutes when a cleverly worked free kick routine found the home keeper completely fooled as Steve Smith dummied to chip the ball to the back post and the keeper couldn't get across as Bambrook's left foot curler dipped inside his left hand post.

Bambrook scored the third on 68 minutes with a fierce shot from 30 yards  which beat the despairing dive of the keeper at his left post again. Within two minutes Ronnie Glavin decided to ring the changes allowing his more experienced men to make way for reserve team players to take to the field for the final 20 minutes.

One of those, Duncan Bray got himself on the score sheet on 78 minutes. Not only did he force his way into space but, setting his sights from the 18 yard line, he coolly beat Setterfield with a drilled low shot.

Result: Parkgate 0 - 4 Emley

Emley have been drawn at home to NCB Maltby in the 2nd round of this competition to be played by 12th December.

Bambrook's Early Strike Not Enough To See Off Millers

Emley v Rotherham United

Emley got off to an ideal start in their FA Cup Tie at Oakwell this afternoon.   The hard working Simeon Bambrook combined neatly with Michael Reynolds to fire home in the 11th minute to give Emley a deserved lead.

The afternoon had started on a sombre note with an impeccably observed minutes silence for Rod Chadwick.  Rod was an Emley stalwart and previously a player and groundsman at the club, but sadly died last Tuesday.

The match however started brightly despite showers of pouring rain.  Nicholson and Reynolds posed some significant problems down the right hand side for the Millers, and it was clear from early on that to stop Emley, they had to stop this outlet.

Emley had taken the lead however before a crude challenge ended Nicholson's match.   He was brought down after yet another fine move with Reynolds and was unable to continue with an ankle injury.  Emley lost a vital attacking channel because of this and it gave Rotherham the opportunity to take the game to Emley.

Just before Nicholson's departure David could have put Emley 2 up.  Unfortunately he could only head weakly at the keeper when unmarked in the box following a typically accurate Banks free-kick.

Rotherham came back into the game and dominated the period up to half-time in their search for an equaliser.  Reynolds by now was starting to attract some crude challenges in an effort to stop him and these were to be a feature of the second half.

Rotherham received a serious talking to at half-time from Ronnie Moore and they showed much more purpose after the break.  Sadly amongst the quality football they played was a cynical desire to remove Reynolds from the game by kicking him at every opportunity.   Three players were booked for this and there could have been others.  One or two of the challenges could have warranted a red card.

Emley had another gilt edged chance to increase their lead two minutes into the new half.  Warner made a hash of a clearance that gave Thorpe a clear run on goal, unfortunately he was not able to shoot before Warner recovered, but the ball fell to Reynolds who shot into the side netting when he should have hit the target.

After this however it was all Rotherham.  They bossed the midfield with accurate passing and movement, and their moves pushed Emley further and further back.  They could not make the telling final pass though as David, Lacey, Hurst, Thompson and the rest bravely fought them back at the edge of the area.

As the corner count grew to the Millers, it seemed they would never get the goal they needed, indeed for all their pressure, Rhodes rarely had to make a save.

After 80 minutes though the breakthrough came from the excellent Danny Hudson.  He chested a half cleared ball down on the edge of the area and shot through the crowd past a despairing Rhodes into the corner of the net.

Rotherham nearly won it soon afterwards when a Lacey and Rhodes mix up led to Berry putting the ball just wide.  At the other end Reynolds had a long range effort just over.

Both teams in the end will be happy with a replay, certainly Emley's form in the cup makes them a more dangerous prospect away from home than at home.

Result: Emley 1 - 1 Rotherham United

Team: Rhodes, Nicholson (Wood), Jones, Thompson, Lacey, David, Banks, Hurst, Thorpe (Calcutt), Bambrook, Reynolds.  Subs not used: Wilson, Tonks, Smith.

Att    6,062.

The replay will be at Millmoor, Rotherham, on Tuesday 24th November.  Kick off 7:30.

  Nov 12th 1998

The only injury worries for Emley for the FA Cup match on Sunday are utility player Nicky Wood (ankle) and midfielder Chris Hurst (dead leg) who are both under treatment from physio Alan Young.  On a positive note, Mark Wilson, Emley's tigerish midfield player who has been sidelined almost all season by knee ligament trouble, has earned himself a place in Sunday's FA Cup squad against Rotherham United at Oakwell.

Wilson made his second appearance as a substitute in the Sheffield Senior Cup first-round draw against Parkgate at the Welfare Ground and should now be in the squad for the FA Cup match.  Wilson sustained his knee injury after just two minutes of the first match of the season at Runcorn and it has only just settled down.  He also played 75 minutes for the reserves at the weekend and could feature as a substitute at Oakwell.

Emley will play Whitley Bay of the Unibond First Division in the 2nd Round of the FA Umbro Trophy.  The match will take place at Emley on Saturday 21st November.

  Nov 9th 1998

Emley v Parkgate

Emley twice came from behind to force a replay against Parkgate in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Challenge Cup second round.

Jason Bonser gave Parkgate the lead in this repeat of last season's final but the holders, despite fielding an under-strength team, equalised before half-time through Miles Thorpe.

Emley goalkeeper Chris Higgins was dismissed in the second half for handling outside his area and was replaced by Simon Jones but neither side could force a win in normal time.

Jon Webb headed the visitors back in front only for Steve Smith to cancel it out in the second period of extra time.

Result: Emley 2 -2 Parkgate  aet.

Att. 198.

The replay is at Parkgate on Tuesday 17th November, kick-off 7:30.

  Nov 7th 1998

News:  The kick-off time for the FA Cup match between Emley and Rotherham United on Sunday 15th November is 1:00pm.  Emley have one more match to negotiate before the big game, against Parkgate in the Sheffield Cup on Monday.    This is likely to see mainly fringe players taking part.  Hopefully this will mean Emley have a full squad to choose from in the FA Cup match, with only long term injury victim Mark Wilson unavailable.

  Leigh RMI v Emley

Despite the scoreline this was an entertaining game.  Both sides have big FA Cup matches next Sunday, and no-one wanted to get hurt, but both teams were committed to getting the three points that would push them up the league to challenge the leaders.

The first half saw chances at both ends.  Rhodes pulled off a marvellous save to keep Leigh at bay and Reynolds caused all sorts of problems to the Leigh defence.  He put some excellent crosses in, but Bambrook and Thorpe were denied by some solid Leigh defending.  Meanwhile Evans was very lively up front for Leigh and forced fine saving tackles from Thompson, Lacey and Jones.

The second half was shaded by Emley.  In a spell after the hour they should have scored.  Dave Felgate in the Leigh goal was in great form however to deny them.   He pushed a Bambrook effort onto the bar and across the face of goal, somehow going for a corner rather than in the net.  He then pulled off some more fine saves from Thorpe and Reynolds.  When he was finally beaten, by a great Reynolds shot from 20 yards, the bar came to his rescue.

Leigh could have snatched it at the end however, and were only denied by some fine goalkeeping from Rhodes.  A Leigh victory would have been an injustice on Emley, but both sides will settle for the point.

Result: Leigh RMI 0 - 0 Emley

Team: Rhodes, Nicholson, Jones, Thompson, Lacey, David, Banks (Tonks), Hurst, Bambrook (Smith), Thorpe, Reynolds. Sub not used: Wood.

FA Cup: Emley through to the First Round for the second year running

Gateshead v Emley FA Cup

Emley again showed the resilience and fighting spirit that took them to the Third Round last season with a fine performance in this FA Cup replay.  Again Emley showed that they are a greater force away from home than at home as they survived a Gateshead penalty in the first half and a last minute disallowed Gateshead goal to get through to a First Round Clash with Rotherham United.

Michael Thompson got the first in the 62nd minute following a Banks free kick and good work by Hurst.  Paul David made the tie safe at the death after good work by Thorpe, despite looking suspiciously offside.

Result: Gateshead 0 - 2 Emley

The First Round tie will be played on Sunday 15th November at Barnsley's Oakwell ground at a time to be decided.  Huddersfield's McAlpine stadium is unavailable due to the Rugby World Cup qualifiers.

  Oct 31st 1998

Emley v Gateshead FA Cup

Emley again failed to take advantage of a home draw and will have to travel to Gateshead on Wednesday 4th November to settle this FA Cup tie and decide who faces Rotherham United in the First Round Proper.

Emley started very strongly in good football conditions.  Michael Reynolds was in sparkling form and he caused consternation in the Gateshead defence.  This led to three of their players being booked in quick succession all for fouls on Reynolds.   Emley should have taken the lead in the first twenty minutes as their lightning attacks stretched Gateshead's defence to breaking point.  The best chance was created by Reynolds, who's cross was inches from being knocked in by Bambrook.  Unfortunately the striker's indecision about whether to use his head  or his boot meant the ball passed harmlessly wide.

Thompson also had a chance just wide and gradually Gateshead stifled the Emley attacks before they reached the Penalty area.  Emley were perhaps guilty of trying to be too clever at times.  Gateshead then began to create chances themselves, and in common with other teams who have visited the Welfare Ground they defended in depth and hit Emley quickly on the break.  For the last 20 minutes of the half Gateshead probably had the better of the play and had a goal disallowed close to half-time for offside.

The second half continued in the same vein, Gateshead looking more and more dangerous as time went on.  After 55 minutes they took the lead when a cross was headed home from some distance, the ball looping over Rhodes head as he strayed off his line.

It was difficult to see where Emley were going to get a goal from, but their task was made easier when Gateshead had a man dismissed for a second bookable offence.  He had perpetrated one of the fouls on Reynolds in the first half and got his second card for deliberate hand-ball, whilst trying to fool the referee into thinking it had hit him in the face.

It took some time for Emley to make the extra man count, and it was down to their most threatening player that the goal came.  Reynolds took the ball into the area and to the byline before pulling it back for David and then Hurst together to bundle the ball over the line.  After this Emley looked the more likely to get the winner, though Gateshead always posed a threat and indeed had another goal disallowed for offside near the end.  For Emley Calcutt had a shot just wide, Thompson put a header wide and Banks curled a shot over the bar when given time and space in the box.

Overall this was not a great performance from Emley and they will need to play much better to overcome Gateshead in the replay.

Result: Emley 1 - 1 Gateshead

Team: Rhodes, Nicholson, Jones, Thompson, Lacey, David, Banks, Hurst, Thorpe (Calcutt), Bambrook, Reynolds.

  Oct 20th 1998

Marine v Emley FA Cup

Emley won the right to face Gateshead at home in the 4th Qualifying Round in Crosby against Marine, but it took a fight back from a goal down to do it.

Marine started where they had left off on Saturday, pressurising Emley all over the pitch, denying them room and time on the ball.  Emley, as on Saturday found this difficult to deal with and Marine were able to put a lot of pressure on the Emley defence.   They won a series of corners in the first 15 minutes and went deservedly ahead in the 16th.

Rhodes pulled off a fine save from a fierce free-kick soon afterwards, and up to the half-hour mark Emley were distinctly second best.  Then they managed to string some passes together, Reynolds, who Marine knew was a real threat, started to find some space and the game began to turn.  As half-time approached Bambrook made some space in the middle, his shot was blocked, but as Emley fans claimed a penalty, Reynolds chased the ball and turned it back to Jones.  He put a pinpoint cross onto the head of Lacey, who placed the ball over the 'keeper and under the bar.

Emley had now broken the shackles Marine had put on the over the previous match and a half.  Banks took a free-kick on the right and placed it with great accuracy on the head of David who made no mistake.

The game had now well and truly turned as Marine could no longer rely on stopping Emley playing and had to search for a goal themselves.  Emley were brimming with confidence however and they absorbed the pressure with ease.  On the hour Bambrook broke from defence and found the Marine defence short of numbers.  He put an excellent through ball for Reynolds, who drew the 'keeper and placed in expertly wide of him into the gaping goal.

Soon afterwards, the game was finished off by the quality of Banks.  Emley won a free kick in a seemingly safe position 25 yards out and not far off the touchline.   Marine didn't bother with a wall and Banks curled a shot even David Beckham would be proud of, inside the near post.

Emley could have extended their lead, Bambrook and Reynolds both having chances, but the fourth round was now assured.

Result: Marine 1 - 4 Emley

Team: Rhodes, Nicholson, Jones, Thompson, Lacey, David, Banks, Hurst, Thorpe (Smith), Bambrook, Reynolds.

News: Emley have been drawn at home in the second round of their defence of the Sheffield Cup.  They will play Parkgate, who they beat in the final last season, on Monday November 9th.

  Oct 17th 1998

Emley v Marine FA Cup

The strong swirling wind and blustery showers did not suggest an attractive game was in store and that turned out to be the case.  Marine set out to deny Emley space and Emley did not play well enough to overcome this.  Combined with a fussy referee this made for a dismal game.

The game took a long time to get going as a series of injuries meant the trainer spent a lot of time on the pitch, the wind also took the ball frequently across the cricket pitch.  Neither side came to terms with the conditions and the 'keepers were rarely troubled.

Reynolds and Calcutt's trickery looked the most likely to create a goal and one Reynolds run almost produced a penalty when he was tripped, the referee though adjudged it outside the box.  Bambrook had Emley's best chance in the first half when he chased a short back pass, bundled it past the 'keeper, but the resulting narrow angle was too much for him and he shot into the side netting.

At the other end Rhodes pulled off a marvellous save to deny Marine as half-time approached.

Emley finished the half the stronger, and started the second-half in the same vein.   Nicholson had an attempted lob tipped over the bar by the 'keeper, and Calcutt's mazy dribble ended in a shot which was easily saved.  Bambrook also created space, but failed to find the final ball that would have made the difference.

Gradually Marine fought back, and they finished the game in the ascendancy, though it was hard to see where either side was going to conjure a goal from.

Result: Emley 0 - 0 Marine

Emley: Rhodes, Nicholson, Jones, Thompson, Wood, David, Calcutt (Banks), Hurst, Bambrook, Thorpe (Tonks), Reynolds.

Bishop Auckland v Emley

Emley gained a valuable away point at lowly Bishop Auckland in what was a very
lack-lustre game where too many mistakes by both sides were frustrating for
the bands of supporters.

Emley began well enough having the best of the first half and deservedly went
in front on 13minutes when Nicholson's cross was headed down by Banks into the
path of Hurst who coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper.

However that was when both teams decided to play the ball to each other and
eventually the home side began to get to grips with the game.

Bishops levelled after 39 minutes when the ever-running Rowntree had his first
shot deflected for a corner and from that corner rose above the Emley defence
to head home from close range.

The second half was a non event with Emley having not one shot on target and
Bishops only troubling Rhodes in the dying minutes when a header from
substitute Littlefair went narrowly over the crossbar.

Result: Bishop Auckland 1 - 1 Emley

TEAM: Rhodes, Nicholson, Jones, Thompson, Lacey, David, Banks, Hurst, Bambrook (Wood

Worksop Town v Emley

This impressive display against league leaders Worksop Town must have been thought provoking for watching Marine manager Roly Howard, who brings his side to Emley next weekend for the F.A.Cup 3rd Qualifying round.
Keyed up Emley combined pace up front and solidity at the back to jolt Worksop in front of a UniBond League seasons best crowd of 1070. The home crowd were drifting towards the exits long before the end as eager Emley took a stranglehold on the game with two goals in a ten minute spell before half time.

Having soaked up Worksop's early onslaught, Emley took the game by the scruff of the neck, and made the break-through after 29 minutes.
The goal was largely down to the quick thinking of Bambrook, who collected the ball near the touchline after an inswinging Calcutt corner was cleared, cut back into the box and shaped to shoot, but then unselfishly centred for the climbing Lacey to head home his third goal of the season.

Ten minutes later, Bambrook joined Reynolds at the top of the club goal charts on five, firing home after great work down the right by Calcutt, who latched onto a Hurst through ball, beat two men and cleverly held up the ball before crossing towards Emley's advancing strikers

In the second half Worksop turned up their workrate but Emley's defence stood firm and on a number of occasions released forwards to create many more chances from which at least two could so easily have made the game even safer.
Emley travel to Bishop Auckland on Wednesday and hope that a fourth win on the road will provide the perfect fillip for the Cup test and provide clear evidence that Ronnie Glavin's men are becoming a genuine force.

Colwyn Bay v Emley FA Cup

A goal seven minutes from time was enough to get Emley through to the 3rd Qualifying Round in this hard-fought cup game.

Colwyn Bay came into the game with a four game unbeaten run behind them, after a shaky start to the season. Ex Emley striker Deiniol Graham was also showing signs of the form that made him a favourite at the Welfare Ground, so there was much to fear about this trip to Wales.

Miles Thorpe started his first game for Emley since his pre-season operation, and he added some strength to the attack alongside Calcutt, Bambrook and Reynolds.

The first half lived up to expectations being hard-fought with few clear cut chances. Lacey had Emley's best when he found himself unmarked in the area from a corner. He could not connect cleanly with the ball however and the keeper tipped over the weak shot. Calcutt also caused problems for the Colwyn Bay defence, his runs from the left causing them great problems.

At the other end Graham was showing the touch that makes him stand out at this level, but his strike partner Roberts could not convert the chances created for him. Rhodes also denied the Bay with some fine saves.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first. Very even, but absorbing. Thompson put a clear header from a corner over the bar, and at the other end Colwyn Bay had a good shout for a penalty turned down when Jones bundled over Roberts.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 83rd minute after Emley took a quick free-kick in their own half. They fed the ball rapidly to Reynolds and caught Colwyn Bay on the hop. Reynolds but the ball perfectly wide of the 'keeper for Bambrook to tuck the easiest of chances home.

Colwyn Bay pressed but failed to make much headway against the resolute Emley defence, ably assisted by David in midfield who had a fine game. Indeed Emley almost went two up when a great Smith shot was tipped onto the bar by Richards.

Result: Colwyn Bay 0 - 1 Emley

Team: Rhodes, Nicholson, Jones, Thompson, Lacey, David, Calcutt (Smith 90), Hurst, Bambrook, Thorpe (Tonks 83), Reynolds. Subs not used: Higgins, Wainman, Wood.

Blyth Spartans v Emley

The long journey North East did not deter Emley from this fine performance. In fact the scoreline flattered the home side with Emley creating but not converting many more chances.

Emley raced into a 2-0 lead after 12 minutes with David heading in a Banks free-kick after 6mins and Hurst shooting from the edge of the area after 12 mins.

Blyth had to change things and quickly took off Patterson (Moat) to try to find some power up front. The Emley defence stood firm with Rhodes, in goal, only called upon once in each half to make saves.

This win will, hopefully, provide a boost for what is a very difficult trip to Colwyn Bay in the F.A.Cup on Saturday.

Result: Blyth Spartans 0 - 2 Emley

Emley v Altrincham

Emley lost their first home game of the season to an Altrincham side who have finally found their form after a sticky start to the season.

Their expensive and highly paid team outplayed Emley in all departments and took the chances that fell their way with clinical precision, unfortunately this could not be said of Emley.

The game started fairly evenly, indeed Emley had a chance in the first minute when Smith had his effort blocked from a Reynolds cross. Bambrook had a fierce shot saved by Andy Dibble in the Altrincham goal and the Altrincham defence cleared a series of efforts following a corner.

Altrincham always looked dangerous however and went ahead after 25 minutes following a free kick from just outside the area.

Emley looked more convincing around half-time but could not fashion any clear chances. Rhodes also pulled off some fine saves to keep Emley in the game.

Early in the second half Bambrook was fouled outside the area, but from the free-kick Altrincham broke quickly and caught Emley on the hop to go 2-0 up.

This spurred Emley on to their best period in the game and if Reynolds could have converted a clear chance created by Bambrook, things might have turned out differently. As it was Altrincham killed the game with a break-away third goal and despite Emley having several clear chances to get a consolation, the score remained at 3-0.

Emley can have no real complaints about this result, though the scoreline was a little harsh.

Result: Emley 0 - 3 Altrincham

Emley v Bishop Auckland

For the first time this season Emley found a settled line up and easily defeated their northern rivals with a goal immediately after half-time by Reynolds and another on 85mins from Bambrook.

Bishops were reduced to 10 men on 75 mins when their centre half was dismissed for a second cautionable offence.

This win moved the home side up to 4th place and on this performance merited the teams above them to look over their shoulders with worry.

Result: Emley 2 - 0 Bishop Auckland

Winsford United v Emley

Emley slipped to their second defeat of the season, despite a spirited second half comeback, at Winsford United. The defeat left something of a sour taste due to the dismissal of Ian Banks in the second half following some poor refereeing decisions.

Winsford dominated most of the first half, their quick attacks often stretching Emley at the back. Emley struggled to make much headway themselves as they missed the presence of Simeon Bambrook, and the injured Paul David.

Winsford's first goal came after 27 minutes when the Emley defence left the ball for each other and allowed a free header giving Rhodes no chance.

Soon after came the first of the dubious refereeing decisions when Winsford broke clear with two men onto Andy Rhodes. The move initially looked offside, and when the ball was passed to Shaughnessy to slot it home, he too seemed to be in an offside position. All Rhodes' protests got him was a yellow card.

This stirred Emley and they came back strongly just before half time. When Reynolds broke clear and was cynically and violently felled as he bore down on goal, it seemed certain that the offender would be sent off, but all he got was a yellow card. From the ensuing free kick and corner, Oakes in the Winsford goal pulled off a magnificent save to deny Jones.

In the second half Emley continued their fight back. Chris Hurst, returned from his unsuccessful spell at Huddersfield, pulled one back, then headed back a Banks free kick for Thompson to equalise with a header. The match was now warming up into a good contest. Winsford forced two fine saves from Rhodes as they pressed to regain their lead.

Just as a great climax seemed in sight the referee intervened to spoil it. Reynolds was again tripped just outside the area, again with a clear run at goal, and again the referee only had the courage to award a yellow card. To add insult to injury he placed the free kick at least five yards further back than it should have been. This was too much for Ian Banks, who let the linesman know what he thought and this resulted in the final insult when he was sent off.

Winsford scored again soon after to take advantage of Emley's unsettled state, and the game was over as a contest.

Result: Winsford United 3 -2 Emley

Team: Rhodes, Nicholson, Jones, Thompson, Lacey, Ogley (Wainman), Banks (Captain), Hurst, Tonks, Wood (Smith), Reynolds. Sub not used: Hutson.

Emley v Stalybridge Celtic

Only a stoppage time equaliser from the visitors denied Emley all 3 points in this hard fought affair at the Welfare ground.

Fussy refereeing by Bradford referee Paul Bennett allowed the equaliser in the 8th minute of stoppage time. The official, whose overuse of the whistle, prevented any fluency in the game came under fire from all quarters as he infuriated both sets of players and supporters alike.

It was tough luck on Emley, who had dominated a second half which began in great style with Steve Smith ghosting in behind the Stalybridge defence to head home from Steve Nicholsons 48th minute cross.

Stalybridge had taken a half-time lead through Sullivan in the 20th minute when the winger stretched to reach a cross from Trundle and poked the ball in off the post.

Emley finally went ahead in the 75th minute when Smith was hauled down by Steve Jones down the right. Banks showed quick reactions to flight the free-kick into the box, and Lacey towered above the back-pedalling defence to head home.

This looked like being the result that everyone had hoped for before referee Bennett and Stalybridge’s Burke had the final say.

Result: Emley 2 - 2 Stalybridge Celtic

Emley v Lancaster City

Star winger Michael Reynolds struck again as gritty Emley overcame the fist half dismissal of defender Mark Ogley to go to 5th in the UniBond League with a 1 - 1 draw against Lancaster City.

Ogley who has played for a number of League and Conference clubs clearly pulled back Diggle, the former Bamber Bridge player as he bore down on goal. Many in the 269 crowd thought that the Lancaster player was offside but with no flag the referee had no alternative but to dismiss the Emley man.

To their credit, Ronnie Glavin’s side kept their shape after this incident, shrugging off the numerical disadvantage to take the game to their visitors.

On 73 mins the visitors took the lead when Thomson turned and blasted a shot which reached him on the rebound after Rhodes had pulled of a fine reflex save from former Halifax man Dean Martin.

Reynolds, however, had other ideas. Within seconds of the restart, his mixture of pace and power had the Lancaster defence in disarray, and after bustling past centre-back Baldwin, the winger bundled the ball home for his 4th goal of the term.

Frickley Athletic v Emley

Emley won this very hard fought local derby and moved up to 5th in the UniBond League but were made to work hard and had to soak up intense pressure in the second half to keep a tight hold of all 3 points.

Emley showed 3 changes from the team which beat Accrington at the weekend with another new signing in Mark Ogley, signed late on Monday evening after being released from Gainsborough Trinity, draughted into defense to allow Nicky Wood to move into midfield and Michael Thompson to stay along side Bambrook in attack. Smith replaced the injured Banks and Tonks and Hutson were also on the subs bench.

Both teams started brightly enough. With their first attack Emley tested Norton in the home goal and his clearance was sliced straight to Bambrook whose goal bound attempt was cleared to safety. Reynolds then in the 7th minute picked the ball up in his own half and sped along the right flank and cut in only to see his deft lob shave the upright with the keeper and defense beaten.

On 9 minutes Norton was cautioned for hand ball outside his area and the free-kick was easily dealt with. Then on 13 minutes Lacey was cautioned for a late tackle on former Emley trialist Hilton who took the free-kick himself only to see his shot sail high over Rhodes's crossbar.

Emley went ahead on 26 minutes with David releasing Thompson on the right. Thompson unselfishly looked up and saw Bambrook free to his right and squared the ball straight into his path and with his right foot Bambrook gave the advancing Norton no chance from 15 yards.

Frickley came more into the game after the break but the resolute Emley defense stood firm only allowing the home side to have shots from long distance. Rhodes too was having to make his impression on the game with superb reflex saves in the 75th, 78th and 85th minutes. In the 78th from a blistering shot from a Haran free kick which Rhodes must have seen very late, he twisted and palmed the ball over the crossbar to the relief of his defense and the many visiting supporters in the 340 crowd.

At the final whistle one could sense the relief on the faces of the players and management team but also the smiles and clenched fists of Manager Glavin who had once again defeated his old club where points are hard to come by.

Emley v Accrington Stanley

Emley bounced back from their defeat at Whitby to claim their second home win of the season against struggling Accrington Stanley.

Emley started brightly and could have had two goals from Banks set pieces in the first fifteen minutes. Thompson headed a free header over and a corner bobbled around in the area before being cleared.

Meanwhile Reynolds was causing his marker all sorts of problems down the wing and an Emley goal looked only a matter of time. Accrington however were also willing to attack when given chance and they gradually got back into the game enough so to take the lead on 23 minutes.

This gave them confidence and for the rest of the half they dominated proceedings. Emley looked disjointed with only the excellent Reynolds and new signing Bambrook looking threatening. Reynolds produced Emley's one other chance of the half when a great solo run was only thwarted by the keeper diving at his feet. Accrington got the ball in the net again just before half-time but luckily it was ruled offside.

Banks' achilles finally gave out at half time and he was replaced by Utley. This meant a reshaping of the team which did not look promising. However within two minutes Reynolds produced a piece of magic to bring Emley level. Winning the ball by the touchline, he cut into the area leaving defenders in his wake before smashing the ball inside the far post.

Emley then took the game over, whilst Accrington also made things interesting by continuing to attack when given chance. Emley finally took the lead when the ever adventurous Bambrook battled his way into the area and shot fiercely into the corner.

Accrington forced a series of corners in their search for an equaliser, but it was Michael Thompson who finally made the point safe, forcing the ball home after the Accrington centre-half made a hash of a clearance.

The second half performance deserved the victory, but Emley will have to be more consistent throughout the game against better opposition.

Result: Emley 3 - 1 Accrington Stanley

Team: Rhodes, Nicholson, Jones, Thompson, Lacey, Wood, Banks (Utley), Hutson, Tonks (Smith), Bambrook, Reynolds. Sub not used: Bray.

Whitby Town v Emley

Emley took the long Bank Holiday trip to Whitby Town and came away pointless after a hard fought rear-guard action.

In front of 878 spectators in sunny but blustery conditions Emley set off well attacking the home defence but slowly Whitby gained the upper hand. Sterling work in defence by all the back four and some superb saves from Rhodes kept the game scoreless at half-time.

The second period started as the first had finished with Whitby taking the game to their opponents and only some last gasp defending particularly by new man Simon Fuller kept Whitby out. Emley did have their moments however with David, Tonks and Reynolds all going close but these were in the minority and with just 7 minutes left Emley finally cracked. A blistering 25 yard shot from John Borthwick on the right took a deflection off lacey's back and went beyond the despairing Rhodes.

So Emley lost their first match of this campaign but with players now recovering from injury and others returning from suspension this was far from a poor result from a very resolute depleted team

Result: Whitby Town 1 - 0 Emley

Marine v Emley

Emley travelled to Marine again short of key players in attack and midfield, but managed to take a two goal lead by half-time. Marine started the better, frequently threatening the Emley goal in the first twenty minutes. Rhodes pulled off one terrific point blank save to keep Marine out.

Then unexpectedly Emley went ahead when Paul David connected with a long cross and steered the ball just inside the far post, much to the surprise of all present as there seemed little chance of PD scoring.

Emley then had their best spell of the match and after a series of attacks went two up just before half time. Thompson had an effort blocked from a Wood cross, but the rebound came straight back to him and he smashed the ball home.

The second half was much more one sided in Marine's favour. They were by no means out of it but it took a very dubious penalty award against Lacey to get the the goal their play probably deserved. Lacey was incensed by the decision and was booked for his protests.

The goal gave Marine hope and the equalised with 15 minutes left, the veteran Chris Camden heading home the simplest of chances.

The heat took its toll and both sides more or less settled for the draw, though Emley had a couple of late opportunities to snatch all three points. PD missed the best of them steering a free header well wide.

Given the lack of attacking options available to Emley, this was not a bad point.

Result: Marine 2 - 2  Emley

Team : Rhodes, Nicholson, Wood, Thompson, Lacey, Hutson, Banks, Tonks, David, Fuller (Smith), Reynolds. Subs not used: Bray, Utley.

Emley v Gainsborough Trinity

Lacey's Strike earns Emley last - gasp win

Emley maintained their unbeaten start to the season with an 86th minute winner from centre-back Neil Lacey after it had looked that they would lose to a lively Gainsborough outfit.

Things had begun well enough when in the 9th minute debutant Leon Wainman challenged and won a ball in midfield threaded the ball to Paul David via Robert Tonks, David cleverly unselfishly passed to Michael Reynolds who lofted a sweetly struck shot over Steve Cherry and into the far corner.

Gainsborough equalised in the 29th minute when Riley turned and hit a shot from the edge of the area which Rhodes in the home goal had no chance with.

In the second half Gainsborough had most of the early pressure and went ahead in the 58th minute. Following a free-kick taken by the lively Riley, Nicky Wood only succeeded in heading past his own 'keeper.

Stevie Smith came on for Wainman in the 60th minute and it was he who put the home side back on terms with a superb strike in the 72nd minute. Emley then enjoyed most of the pressure from then on until Lacey's winner, although Rhodes was called into action just before the final whistle to make two reflex saves to keep the points safe.

Result: Emley 3 - 2 Gainsborough Trinity

Team : Rhodes, Nicholson, Wood, Thompson, Lacey, David, Banks, Hutson, Tonks, Wainman (Smith 60 ) Reynolds . Subs not used Utley and Bray

Runcorn v Emley

Emley claimed a point from their tricky opener at Runcorn despite injuries and suspensions restricting their attacking options. Indeed it could have been three as Runcorn only got an equaliser five minutes from time.

Emley started the match with a makeshift attack made up of Mark Wilson and Paul David. This was soon changed when Willy had to go off due to a knee injury sustained in a fifty-fifty challenge after just three minutes. Robert Tonks moved into his place and newcomer Steve Smith got an early opportunity to show what he could do from the bench.

Runcorn had much of the possession, but Emley made chances of their own early on, the best being a long range effort from Tonks, well saved by the keeper.

The breakthrough came after 35 minutes when Tonks threaded a great ball through for Michael Reynolds to run onto. He finished in style, putting the ball through the keeper's legs.

Runcorn came back and could have equalised during a frantic goal-mouth scramble but the Emley defence did well to keep the ball out.

The second half saw Runcorn have most of the pressure as they sought an equaliser, but Emley defended well to keep them at bay, sometimes with fine last-ditch tackling.

The game turned nasty however when Paul David fouled the Runcorn number 4, he retaliated and was sent off. David got away with a booking. Unfortunately the referee saw fit to book him again soon afterwards for an inoccuous challenge and both teams were reduced to ten men.

Runcorn finally got their equaliser to deny Emley all three points, but on refection 1-1 was a fair result and acceptable to Emley given their lack of fire power.

Result: Runcorn 1 - 1 Emley 1

Team: Rhodes, Nicholson, Wood, Thompson, Lacey, David, Banks, Hutson, Tonks, Wilson (Smith (Utley)), Reynolds.

Ossett Town v Emley

Emley warmed up for the start of the new UniBond season on Saturday week with a 2-2 draw at Ossett Town last night.

Goals from Paul David direct from a free-kick and a close-range effort from Miles Thorpe ensured a share of the spoils, although manager Ronnie Glavin will have been disappointed to have seen his side throw away a two-goal lead.

Emley v  Huddersfield Town

Raw talent shone above seasoned campaigners as Emley continued their encouraging pre-season work with a convincing 4-2 victory in their annual Mick Green Testimonial clash with a second string Huddersfield side at the Welfare Ground.

Goals in the 9th and 27th minute by Dean Calcutt either side of a 19th minute Town equaliser from former Emley favourite Chris Hurst and then Mickey Reynolds put Emley further in front 3 minutes before the break.

Town came more into game after half time and substitute Nat Brown reduced the arrears in the 49th minute. However Emley showed they were not to be out done and when Reynolds again weaved his way into the box he was tripped by a Town defender and up stepped skipper Ian Banks to coolly slot home the resulting penalty.

  Monday 15th June

Emley received news that their recent application to become Full Members of the Football Association had been successful. President Peter Maude and Secretary Richard Poulain were invited to attend an interview at FA headquarters, Lancaster Gate, and the result was eagerly awaited.

  20-May-1998

The club has announced some of its plans for the future using the money from the FA Cup run which culminated in a tie at Premiership West Ham United. The executive committee have put in place spending plans to develop the club gradually for the future. The basis of this is an investment in a strong youth policy.

  • Ronnie Glavin has signed a three year contract with the club, to continue his good work on the field with the first team, but also to develop a School of Excellence.
  • The old dressing rooms are to be repaired and used as the base for the Soccer School. Matches will still be played at Skelmanthorpe, and the old dressing rooms used for changing.
  • A qualified coach is to be employed to oversee the coaching of youngsters from age 10 upwards.

In addition various improvements are to be made to ensure the ground and facilities continue to meet Unibond League standards. These include the building of new dugouts and improvements to the pitch surrounds, and the purchase of new ground maintenance equipment.

The major outlay however is to be spent on the clubhouse. 40000gbp will be spent completely refurbishing the club, including extensive work changing the interior layout to bring it up to modern standards. The basic structure of the building is basically sound, and it is hoped these changes will make the club more popular for use by the villagers, particularly as a venue for parties.

At the annual awards ceremony at Painthorpe country club, Michael Thompson took the Supporters and the Players Player of the year awards. Michael Reynolds received the Presidents award. Ian Banks was also given an award for his services on and off the pitch over the last three years.

Simon Jones also took the opportunity to apologise to the club, the committee, the supporters and his fellow players for the poor discipline he showed during 1997-98. Jonah's apology was warmly received by attendees at the dinner.
